  • How to change song information by group?

I know we can change song information by group by selecting multiple items.
However, this option only allow to change a limited set of information.
I can't find a way to change songs by group in some of the options in the "Options" tab, i.e. Remember playback position, Skip when shuffling and Video Kind (for videos only).
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Nothing you can do about it

  • Can't modify or change song information or add artwork.

I have been having trouble with iTunes since updating to the latest version. I keep my music on an external drive due to the library size. I had to create a separate iTunes folder and music folder to keep on the external drive. I also had to manually delete thousands of duplicates that were in those folders. Now, when I import songs from a dvd, I can't change the song information or add artwork (not modifiable), but I could before doing the above changes. Can anyone help?

Did you ever find an answer?
I am having the same issues. All of a sudden I can not make changes to file names/artwork on music/movies stored on my external usb drive.
Copying a file, that won't let me make changes to it, to the desktop and comparing permissions shows the exact same permissions.
Files stored on the internal HD have no issues with making changes.
Like I said, this all of a sudden started happening. This is happening even on my home movies that I digitized and backed-up on the external usb drive. I used to be able to make changes, add artwork, etc right up until sometime in late AUG or early SEPT. Now I am left with some files with artwork and a lot without.

  • ITunes won't let me change song information and hangs up...

Using an 2010 iMac and iTunes 11.x I tried to change some song information as I did it for several years and iTunes versions.
Now it seems to be an installation error and the program hangs up if I try to open the information pop up.
The music plays on but nothing else can be done as to quit iTunes (hard quit).
A reinstallation doesn't had any impact, but I was not able to deinstall iTunes first (error message: ...this program is part of OS X and cannot be deleted...)
I also checked the hard disk and the right management, everything seems to be fine.
Has anybody an idea how to get iTunes de- and reinstalled completely?
I did not find an guide for that.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hey there skipperchong,
The other file that it could be is the iTunes library file.. The problem is. This containes all of your playlists, file locations, library info and various other things.
So we cant simply remove it and let the OS write a new fresh one like the other file.
What you would have to do is remove your entire library of itunes, delete the library file and reimport your music again, which will, in turn delete your playlists.
Are you on a Windows computer or a Mac?

  • Problem w/ changing song information

I recently bought a new computer and I'm trying to rebuild my music collection which was at about 5 thousand songs. anyway here is my problem
I've been downloading torrents, some of them dont really translate well into the ITUNES library, so when I go to change the song information (Song title, album title, or artist) it will change at first, but once the song is played once, all the info I changed is lost and it returns back to the way it was before I changed it
example = I downloaded a torrent of Rolling Stones 40 Licks, once the songs were imported they were listed kinda weird (ex Song Title= 02-Sympathyfor_thedevil) So i wanted to fix them to look more normal (ex Song title= Sympathy For The Devil). It let me fix it normally, but once the song was played once, all the info automaticlly changed right back to the way it was
    (02-Sympathyfor_thedevil).
I know this is kinda confusing, its hard to explain, if anyone could help that would be awesome, because i'm sort of a perfectionist when it comes to my music library

Right click on the song, choose Get Info and in the box that opens choose Info. You can change the things you want in there. There's a little bit more about here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/6.0/en/510win.html

  • ITunes  changing song information with get information

in some cases when using the command I the song title is not highlighted and the information
cannot be changed, in one case this affected several songs in one album but not all, this album
was purchased thru amazon. any ideas

Just though of something else from the id3 tag, I decided to convert the song again in mp3, which it was already, the point being I converted the song, this new song was then edited and I was also able following this to edit the faulty one, then I went in show me in finder and delete the one I just converted. It is a long way to go at it I just hope there would be an easier way to get access to the song title. I have notice more and more song I get are like this.

  • ITunes automatically changing song information

when i scroll through the songs in iTunes, the comments will automatically fill with random numbers. Also, the track # disappears. for example:
    Track 1 of 5 becomes
    Track 1
after i scroll through. the 5 disappears.
A lot of my album art is also gone.
I have the latest iTunes by the way. HELP PLEASE

You are definitely not alone. This has been happening for at least 2 or 3 versions now. There are multiple threads about this but I haven't found one yet with a solution for the problem.
There have been lots of possible causes thrown around but none of them have worked for me. I've heard the following suggested so far:
    Sound Check
    ID3 Tag Version
    Tag Editor used
It's really frustrating because I have over 11000 songs and never know which ones are going to be corrupted each day. I have almost 4500 songs with random numbers in the comments although it is interesting that not all of them have lost the artwork and track count. Another interesting thing is that once any song in an album has this happen, the rest of the songs have the problem.

  • HELP!  Is there a way to change column information in iTunes such as name of artist, genre etc, other than deleting them one at a time? Such as the way you delete an entire group of songs by holding down control keys or selecting the Select All command.

HELP!  Is there a way to change column information in iTunes such as name of artist, genre etc, other than deleting them one at a time? Such as the way you delete an entire group of songs by holding down control keys or selecting the Select All command. Thanks.

If you select all the songs you want to change, Be it one song or an akbum, or an Artist, Or Genre, or playlist. Then Right mouse click  and Get Info. You then get a slightly different from normal Get Info box as this is the One for Multiple items.
In there have a look at the tags and see if the one you want to changes is in there. There are a few tabs so if for example you wanted to change the Media Type from Home Movie to Movie go to the Options tab and select Movie and OK and it will change the whole selection.

I can't change any information for any songs in my library, everything is just greyed out.  How can I get the ability to edit my song information?

I found one other way to do it.  I just deleted them all out of my iTunes library. Now I can re-import them from Window's My Music file with the original artists' names intact.
    Thanks for your help, Matt!

  • I try to play a song, but iTunes has changed the information on the file

After installing iCloud, my iTunes suddenly started changing the information on my music files. I would go to play one song, but another song would play instead. I have a PC. Does anyone have any idea what the cause and solution might be?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • ITunes on MBP keeps altering song information without my inputing any changes

It seems several people are having this problem, as far as I can tell from other blogs and discussion boards, but I have yet to find an answer that corrects the issue permanently. iTunes (v. 11.3 (54)) on my MBP mid-2012 13" (running OS X Mavericks, v. 10.9.4) model keeps changing the genre of my songs. I have, in the past, organized songs according to genres as I liked and have not had problems until about 3 months ago. I have tried several fixes but it I cannot find one that keeps iTunes from making the changes on its own without my input in the song information. All I have to do to change the song back is simply "play" it. When I do iTunes reverts the song's information back to where it should be and places it within that genre. Then the next time I reopen iTunes it has changed all the songs again. If anyone has a fix please post here or link me to one that has worked for you. This issue has also started to change some album and artist information. One fix I found that worked only temporarily (until I turned my MacBook back on) was going to Preferences >> Advanced and unchecking the "Keep iTunes Media folder organized." Worked for a day and then reverted back to the same problem.

Yes, others are seeing this. Something in purchased media (I am pretty sure this has only happened with purchased media) is periodically checking back with the iTunes Store and resetting the tags in the iTunes library file but not in the actual media files (metadata are stored in both).  I haven't seen a truly systematic diagnosis of the issue (I use an old iTunes and have no iTunes account so I can't test anything myself).  There are temporary workarounds but tags will still revert after a time.
2014 discussion about edited tags for Store purchases reverting to originals - https://discussions.apple.com/message/26077896#26077896 - edited tags are still present in the media file but revert to the originals in the iTunes library file.  Workaround is to refresh tags so media file tags are re-read and used in library file.

Send feedback to Apple about this so they know it is an issue they need to investigate:

Don't expect an immediate solution but maybe the next time they update the software it may be resolved.

  • ITunes always reverses changes to song informations

Hi! When I make changes to informations (artist, album artist, genre etc.) of songs and albums I purchased from the iTunes store, iTunes always reverses these changes after playing the songs and/or syncing with the iPhone. How can I stop that?

  • MP3 song information not retained after iTunes 7.0 - ID3 tags at fault?

I'm having some strange problems with track information in iTunes. I first noticed it when I tried to copy some mp3's from my Mac to my mobile phone: certain tracks did not retain the song information, like artist, album etc., while others did.
A similar problem has been discussed in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3698498
However, my problem seems to be a little bit more specific.
If I look at the music in my library in iTunes, all the track information is there. However, for MP3's encoded after 16th October last year, the "Imported With" field, using Get Info, is shown as "Unknown". Before this date, it is shown as "iTunes v7.0". For all MP3's the ID3 version is v2.2.
I believe that I must have upgraded to iTunes 7.0.1 around this time, since I have a number of Apple Lossless audio files which have also been imported and don't show this problem.
The main problem is with the file ID3 tag information (I think). If I select one of the problem tracks, find the original file, open it up in Quicktime and "Get Info", no track/album/artist/composer information is displayed. This is NOT true for 1) MP3's encoded before 16th October 2006 and 2) Apple Lossless files encoded at any time.
In other words, the track information for songs encoded with iTunes 7.0.1 and later is either encoded in a way that no other application can read, OR is only being stored in the iTunes playlist, NOT the file itself. I can see all the track information for these problem files on my iPod, but NOT my mobile phone (where I have to manually copy them over), even if I drag and drop them directly from iTunes.
I have this problem with Quicktime, my mobile phone music player and RealPlayer, so I'm assuming it's "system wide". It even occurs if I copy a problem file out of my music folder and onto the the Desktop, then manually add the track to iTunes: all the song information has disappeared.
I have all my music stored on an external hard disk - 160GB Freecom ToughDrive formatted as HFS+. Previously it was stored on an external disk formatted as FAT32, but copying the files over to the new disk didn't change the problem.
I considered using the "convert ID3 tags" option to see if it would make a difference, but both the good and bad files are listed as using v2.2. I also don't understand enough about them to feel confident converting them to something different - perhaps to v2.3 or v2.4 - just to see if it makes a difference.
Any information on how to "recover" the missing information (for anything other than iTunes) would be greatly appreciated!
    MacBook Pro 17" 2.16 GHz 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iTunes 7.1.1

Okay, some more information as I try and track down the source of the problem.
By using an id3 tag editing program - ID3 Editor - I was able to view the song information for each track, even though all the other music players I had tried would not show it. If I then chose to modify and update the ID3 information, this would somehow modify the tags in such a way that they become readable in all other programs.
I tried using the "Convert ID3" tags option in iTunes, just on a whim, but without any success. Saving the song information in ID3 Editor doesn't change the version of the ID3 tag - it's still listed as v2.2 in iTunes - but it DOES make it readable in other programs. I also tried the various text conversion options, again without any success.
This looks to me like a bug in iTunes. While its possible for me to get around it, in an extremely long winded way, I still can't understand why iTunes would be writing ID3 information that other Apple programs cannot read.
Any suggestions? Should I be posting this question in a different forum perhaps?

  • I cannot update the song information on my iPod in iTunes.

I got an iPod Touch 4g about a year ago.  Last month the iPod all the sudden stopped working. I took it into the store twice and the second time they simply replaced it with a new one. Since then I have been having two problems:
    1) The operating system has been running extremely slowly. I brought it into the store today and they suggested reinstall the OS and that this should fix the issue with it. I can't really ***** that problem right now.
    2) I for some reason cannot update the song information on the iPod directly in iTunes.  If I change the name of the song or the album or genre in Itunes that is actually on the iPod, it'll show up as changed in Itunes but on the iPod itself it hasn't changed. On my old one, whenever a change was made it would often say, "One moment while library updates." It doesn't do this on my replacement.
In order to change information for the songs, I need to delete the copy off my iPod, update the information on the computer copy and then retransfer it over. Is there some setting I need to change in order for the changes to take place. I would like to avoid going back to the store a fourth time.

    1) Powering off nd then back on the iPOd tends to fix the lag problem for a while
    2) The problem with updating music is a known problem with iOS 5 and as you found out, you have to delete/unsync the music form the iPod and then resync.
