Change specific music folder

My music management has been lousy in the past so I have a mix of folders where my music is located. Itunes displayes and plays them all correctly.
Now i understand a bit more about itunes i have configured it to my liking and all new music I add gets copied neatly to the folder specified in the preferences and all is well. Now I want to move all the 'old' music that is located all over on my mac to the 'default' Itunes folder as configured in preferences.
I can copy the music there of course but then itunes still points to the old location. Is there a way to do this without having to manually change the .xml file with the file locations ?
Thanks in advance for the support.

try if this script works for you:
Re-Locate Selected v1.1 This script will re-locate the files of the selected iTunes tracks from their current location to a new user-chosen folder. iTunes will be updated with each track's new location and all of each track's meta-data will be preserved. Option to remove the files from their original location. (I don't advise using this on more than an album's worth of tracks or so at a time; re-locating dozens of tracks' files to a single folder doesn't seem to make much sense to me.)  NOTE: If your "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" preference set, you will not be able to create new folders in or re-locate files within the iTunes Media folder; outside is OK.

  • Help: iTunes freezes when I try to change the music folder location

    Hi everyone,
I want to change my iTunes music folder location but every time I click on the change button (Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Change) iTunes freezes. All of my music is in an external drive and I recently reinstalled windows, so I had to back up the old iTunes folder and replace the default one (after the reinstallation) with it, but now I can't set the new location of the drive because of this problem.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated
    A.

Okay. Finally called Apple, and they said that this is something to do with the latest iTunes - 10.6 - and the only way to solve it is to restore my iPod, and then arrange it so I manually manage my music, etc. Which I learned how to do here: http://en.kioskea.net/faq/3740-how-to-manually-manage-music-and-videos-in-itunes  It worked. Woo-hoo!

  • Changing Itunes Music Folder

I was running out of space on my old hard drive and need space for music so I got a new hard drive. I went to apple.com and read the article on changing the itunes music folder location to the new drive. In the article it said to click "ok" when done, but there is no "ok" button to click so after I change the desired itunes music folder location and exit, it just goes back to my old location. This question probably has a simple answer, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

In iTunes, if you go to edit/preferences/advanced/general, you should see this screen (and the 'ok' button at the bottom right corner).

  • Change of music folder location... songs cant be found.

im using itunes 7.2 on mac os x recently bought an external hard drive, and after i bought it i transferred all my music to the external drive, put the old library in the trash and reset the itunes music folder location under preferences/advanced/general. everything was working and playing fine until today when i emptied the trash. despite the fact that my itunes was meant to be finding the music from my exterrnal hard drive, apparently it had been playin it from my old library, in the trash, coz now whenever i try and play a song i get a " the song could not be used becausee the original file could not be found" message.... only the songs ive added since i changed music folder location play... despite the whole library being in the new folder location. i dont want to go through 30gbs of music and select the location manually, whats happening?
    Cheers,
    Ben

When you click "Yes" to find the file, you're supposed to browse to the actual song file on your computer to show iTunes where it has been moved. Are you saying you can't browse to the file, or you can't find the file?
If you can't find the file--did you move all of your song files to your new computer, too? The library file only contains links (file paths) to where the song is located on your computer. You also have to move the music folder (with all of your music files) and the artwork folder (with all the cover art).

When I go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General, the iTunes Music folder location shows as C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music but I want to change the location. • Not saving preferences after change in music folder

I've successfully moved the Itunes location (folder) before on my laptop, changing the place where music was stored, but I had major problems getting that IBM Thinkpad to work with my brand new Ipod. So I brought the external hard drive back down to my old PC. So here's what happens. I follow all the directions for making that external drive my Itunes folder location (Edit-Preferences-Advanced-Change folder, etc) but then the next time I start up the program, it has reverted back to C:.../mymusic/itunes. Very frustrating and I have no idea why. It didn't happen on the other computer.
A similar problem is that on the laptop, I did not have to keep signing in to the Itunes store, now I do. Again, Itunes seems to forget every change from it's last session. Any ideas

  • ITunes Music Folder Location - PLEEEEASE HELP

All my music on iTunes is saved to an external hard drive. Every few months or so, iTunes will automatically change the location for the iTunes Music Folder to the wrong destination. When I change it back to the actual source of the music on my external hard drive, iTunes will not recognize the songs without me manually inputting the song locations one song at a time (10,000+ songs).
The only thing I can think of is to remove all music from iTunes and readd it, but this is DEVASTATING as I have about 30 playlists which are not easy to recreate whatsoever.
So, I either need to know how I can get iTunes to recognize the songs, without losing all my playlists...
Or I want to know why iTunes changes the Music Folder Location, so I can stop this from happening in the future.
This has happened to me twice before, and it's been absolutely DEVASTATING each time. I posted twice previously and no one helped me. I am desperate to stop this madness. Please help!

I don't know whether I have a solid answer for you or not, but thought I will share my thought with you. Of course this assumes that you know where we designate the path to store the iTunes Music Files.
Could the "folder path changing" problem be due to the fact that you have it in an EXTERNAL drive? I have my Original CDs copied into the external drive but I maintain the iTunes Music folder on my internal hard drive and let iTunes manage that. Time to time, i copy that to my external drive for safe keeping.
Now in your case, it is the external drive. The question becomes the full path name with which iTunes finds this location. Being an external drive, the Drive Letter assigned to it could chnage depending on what otherd evices you may have connected to your PC at the time - one time it could be F, and another time it could be G and so on. Could this be causing you the random problem?
    It is an idea!

  • Trouble with music folder - when trying to add music to itunes library.

Ever since I updated itunes recently, I have been having difficulty adding music from my music file. When I go to File/Add File to Library it brings me to the default storage location, even though I have gone to Edit/Preferences/Advanced and changed my music folder to what I want to have come up when I go to add a song. My music folder has always been the same, but for some reason, it has all of a sudden decided to change to the default music folder, where my music isn't kept, and I can't seem to change it back. Is anyone having this issue as well? Please help!

    chris CA,
I think you missed the question that "fillibrownis" raised (btw, I am seeing the same problem and it is quite frustrating).
The problem is that when we select File/Add File to Library, it throws up a box which displays the windows default music location (which is "My Music" on Windows XP). In previous versions, iTunes used to show the iTunes Music Location, as specified in (Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General). The benefit for such a thing was that user could directly copy music from external sources to the iTunes Music Location (without using the "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library).

  • How do i get the mp3 information in my music folder to match the changes i make in itunes?

So basically, I am very OCD about the organization of my Itunes music collection. Every time I add a song I edit the info so that the artist, track name, album art, etc. are correct and follow the format I use. My Itunes music folder, however, is a complete disaster. Songs that I've imported from CDs are impossible to find because the proper artist and track names that I fix in itunes are not altered on the actual mp3 file. Even songs that I've purchased online frustrate me because I have a preferred method of organizing collaborative works that's different from the way the songs are initially labeled. Ultimately, I have a ton of music that would be a nightmare to sort through if I did so outside of Itunes.
I've looked this up quite a few times and honestly haven't been able to find any advice that can solve this problem. Perhaps I haven't been looking up the right question, but I hope what I'm trying to get across now makes sense. I believe what I need is for the id3 tags to be permanently changed when I alter information in Itunes.
I'm running OS X Lion 10.7.5 on a MacBook Pro.
I would be extremely grateful if anyone knows a way I can solve this problem, even if the only data I'm able to alter is the artist and track name, that would still be a significant help.
    Thanks in advance !

Unfortunately, that's the only method Keep Media Organized uses. It's not as simple as renaming the file: iTunes may be unable to locate the file if the Filename changes, and you locating each file manually for iTunes is probably not an option.
However, now you have most of your library organized by iTunes, if you could stay on top of manual organization, you can uncheck this option and google one of Doug's scripts (perhaps "Doug's iTunes Script Append Artist to Filename"—you'll want to check version compatibility and whatnot with such scripts, as many of them are rather old). Your new additions to your library will not be organized automatically, though. I personally prefer iTunes organizing my files, as I am liable to procrastinate to an unholy degree when faced with organizational tasks!

  • ITunes Music Folder Missing on external hard drive after changing iTunes Media Folder Location from MacBook Hard Drive.  Not deleted...just missing?

I store my iTunes media folder on my external hard drive and can no longer find it there.  It seemed to becomd lost after I re-designated the default iTunes media location.  I had downloaded some things from iTunes without my external hard drive plugged in and when they downloaded they downloaded to the default location on my Macbook Pro.  In recognizing that, I wanted to move those files from the hard drive on my MacBook Pro to the external hard drive.  When I re-selected the location as the external hard drive a copy process began.  I cancelled the copy process fearing the small number of files from my Macbook Pro would over-write all of the files on my external hard drive so I quit the copy process.  Now I do not see my "iTunes Music" folder on my external hard drive.  I fear that I have somehow lost the path but I believe the content is still on my external hard drive although I no longer see the "iTunes Music" folder on my external hard drive.  I know I didn't delete it, but it isn't there.  Is there a way to make it re-appear?  I would really appreciate any guideance anyone has.
    Thank you.
    Best,
    Matt

When you change the location in preferences it tells iTunes to start, from this point on, storing new media files in the new location.  It then presents you with the option to move any old files in their current locations to the new location.  It doesn't move the library files which are not media files.  Read the links below to understand how iTunes works because you are the one with the computer in front of you and are in the better position to understand how it stands as regards to iTunes files.
What are the iTunes library files? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
More on iTunes library files and what they do - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes#Media_management
What are all those iTunes files? - http://www.macworld.com/article/139974/2009/04/itunes_files.html
Where are my iTunes files located? - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1391
Now, did you keep the whole library on the external drive, or did you keep just media?  From your description of the situation it sounds as if you kept the whole library there and when the external was not attached it returned to default location on the internal drive.  What you should have done then was plug in the external drive, hold down the option key, and guide iTunes to the library file on the external.  At this stage you could have dealt with the mislocated new files on an individual basis.
I guess the key question is, did your trying to move the couple of new media files to the external drive overwrite the iTunes folder there, which because you then canceled may have also just resulted in it being deleted.  I am not going to test the theory on my system.
How big was your library on the external?  If it was 40GB do you now suddenly have 40 GB free?
Look for any iTunes folders on the external drive.  In view options turn on "calculate all folders sizes" and see if there are any big ones.

  • I've changed my "My Music" folder and now I cant get iTunes to run!

Ok, Maybe some has a fix for this - I am running Vista and I have moved my "My Music" folder from its original location to its own dedicated hard drive (F:). Now when I install and try to run any iTunes version I get the error "The folder iTunes cannot be found or created and is required. The Default location for this folder is inside the "Music" Folder." I have even gone so far as to create a Music folder under Users\"current user"\ . Does anyone have a workaround or fix to this - I will have to take this computer back if I cant get Itunes to work on it.

IF you are able to get iTunes open you need to go into preferences and change the location of your music directory (Under Advanced) If you are unable to access iTunes you need to recreate the iTunes folder under my music... open up the directory on your F drive and copy the XML document. Place it into the iTunes directory under my music. Open that file up in an HTML editor and change the location of your files in the line that looks like this...
    file://localhost/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/*You're Name*/My%20Documents/My%20Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/
Change the C: to the F: and update the rest of the path to point to the right directory. I hope this helps!

  • ITunes Music Folder Location changed, but iTunes still uses old location

Okay - I'm getting a bit frustrated here. Because I had no room on c:, I moved all my iTunes preferences -- applications I downloaded for the iPod Touch, file settings, and all that stuff -- to my D:\ drive. Then I went to Preferences > Advanced and changed the iTunes Music Folder location to my D: drive.
Everything SEEMED to have looked good. Or so I hoped.
The 40+ applications I bought are no longer listed on the Applications purchased list. Further, all my files are STILL saving to the c: drive.
How do I FORCE iTunes to acknowledge that the D:\ drive is storing my iTunes preferences and files?!

OK, now I get what you're trying to do. I think!
I run my ITL file off my exHD, so all my Artwork & Applications are stored there. I think if you try running your ITL file from the D: drive it will do what you want.
    Try this
    1) close itunes & wait for the library ITL file to save ( I assume it's still on C: hence that's why artwork/apps are DLing there)
    2) copy that ITL file over to the D: drive
    3) press and hold the shift key while starting itunes and choose the ITL file on D:
Now all your future artwork/apps shoudl download to D:, try it by getting a free app.

  • How to stop music folder from being created when changing media folder

When I try to change the media folder location, a new "music" folder is created - how do I stop this from happening (I already have a music folder that I want it to default to, but when I try to select it, it creates another music sub folder)
This is a new issue - I have been using itunes for years without ever having this problem...

That's how itunes 9 works, now. The top-level folder is considered the "Media" folder and there are music, podcast, movie, audiobook, etc subfolders.
Which is better in a way, since before itunes 9, everything was dumped in a music folder, even audiobooks that weren't music.
