If there are problems with updating or with the permanently then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
*Firefox 20.0: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application (e.g. open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • System Folder errors after I changed all permissions on HD to read & write

    Hi,
Two things may have caused probs on my new 2010 iMac (Snow Leopard), and Applecare is shut so I would really appreciate some help as I have urgent work.
    1) INCORRECT PERMISSIONS
I have been stupid. I clicked on Macintosh HD and changed all permissions to read & write because I wanted to be sure I could open and edit all documents on other computers.
I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions from the install disc, but I am still getting system error messages, and my HP printer won't work.
The first message, in Repair Permissions, said: Warning: SUID file System/Library/Cores has been modified and will not be repaired. I have read a support doc on this which says no need to worry but I don't like it and would like to fix this.
More importantly, my HP printer won't work, displays error beside the document in print dialogue box.
Deleting the printer and readding it didn't work, so I downloaded new drivers and tried to install them, which is when I got the second system error message: System extension System/Library/Extensions/BJUSBLoad.kext was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it or contact product's vendor for an update.
I checked the permissions on the file and they were still wrong despite Repair Permissions, allowing everyone to read & write. So I have now clicked on the entire System folder and changed the permissions to: System read & write, admin read only, everyone read only.
Will this fix it or do I need to do something else, such as check ownership, to make sure all permissions on the computer are now correct?
    2) MEMORY STICK SHUT DOWN MY IMAC
Additionally (though I don't think this had anything to do with my problems), I inserted a Sandisk USB memory stick the other day and it immediately shut down the computer. When I inserted it into my Macbook it initially rejected it and gave me a message saying the device wanted too much power so it had ejected it to prevent damage to my computer. When I tried again it was OK. I totally reformatted the stick in case there was something harmful on it, but should I now bin the stick as faulty? Scared to use it again.
    3) IS IT BEST TO REINSTALL ENTIRE SOFTWARE?
If I do a reinstall of all the software from the install disc, will it wipe out all my data, such as Mail, documents, bookmarks and other apps?
I would back-up, but if I try and back up files on my external drive it will automatically do a Time Machine back-up and I don't want to do that in case it backs-up all the corrupted files. Otherwise, I wouldn't mind starting again just to be sure all is well.
Expert advice would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you
    Sarah

Oh, silly really. I was in a hurry and working on docs that I needed to take to the office and open on another computer there.
But when I checked the permissions on the doc it said I could read & write but everyone else was read only.
I thought if I opened it on another machine I'd be stuck with read only access and not be able to work on there. I think I couldn't change it, so I thought to avoid any future problems like that I would change everything on machine!
    Yikes. Won't do that again

  • Changing Sharing & Permissions on a Mac OS Extended External Drive

I'm using ChronoSync to back up to 4 external hard drives. Three of them were formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), while the 4th is not journaled. On the journaled HD's, I can change the privileges for me, staff and everyone in Get Info; I can also check or uncheck "Ignore ownership on this volume" on 2 of them. My Time Machine volume doesn't have the option to ignore ownership. My issue is that changing privileges on the Mac OS Extended volume is grayed out, and the box to ignore ownership is checked. Therefore, Chronosync cannot write to the volume.
I could try to use chmod in Terminal to change permissions on this volume, but I don't know the syntax to get to a mounted volume (I know they're listed in /Volumes).
    So I have two questions:
    1. Does this issue indicate a substantial difference between journaled and not-journaled Mac OS file systems?
    2. What is the syntax in Terminal to change the permissions on the volume (name is Video Backup) so that I can at least uncheck the "Ignore ownership on this volume"?
I apologize if this has been asked and answered elsewhere on this forum, but I wasn't able to locate such a discussion.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Hi mackjack,
The commands Niel posted were to regain access to a drive not to change existing permissions. Nonetheless, I executed them so at least I know the syntax to use in order to get to an external hard drive (something I hadn't known before), so thanks!!! I might try chmod 770
    Update:
Now that I know the basic syntax (thanks to you) I can now change permissions for any user I like. Chronosync is able to synchronize to the drive.
    Thanks!!

  • File System Permissions Don't Allow "Staff" Group

This is just one of the many frustrations I've been having with my new Macbook Retina. I've had a macbook for 2.5 years at home, and it seems in the context of a corporate environment, Mac's are incredibly frustrating. Not to go on a rant (which I inevitably will anyway), I'll just focus on the latest problem I have.
I need to get files off of my Macbook from other machines on the network and home; some of these machines are Windows whilst some are Mac's. The problem I have is that often the permissions in my home directory are screwed. I've never touched permissions, but for some reason, some of my folders like my "Download" folder have had the "staff" group removed from them, so no domain admins are able to access my files in these directories. This would typically be a minor issue as I'd just change the permissions back to how they should be, but frustratingly, the "Staff" group apparently does not exist according to the People and Group picker.
This is obviously one of those many problems that arise from the fact that Apple's thin user-friendly veneer over unix isn't very solid. The amount of inconsistancies between concepts presented by the user-friendly UI and what's actually happening under the hood can make this operating system a nightmare to use.
Now, I intended to submit this via Apple's bug reporter website, but it won't load as usual. To be honest, I wonder if anyone at Apple even know that they have a bug reports website as they don't seem to attend to any bug reports or make sure it's working.
It's a terrible feeling being at the mercy of a company like Apple that don't seem to care a great deal about their customers. In this regard, they're no different to their archrival Microsoft.
Anyway, in my research it seems Apple's half-way through phasing out the staff group. I say half-way, because it's still the default group used by user-owned files and directories, and there doesn't seem to be any replacement. Does anyone know what group I should be using instead of the "staff" group, or otherwise how to add the staff group to these directories with broken permissions?

I have never had to mess around with permissions in the Get Info window, but there are other ways.
Do you have access to the other computers onto which you need to move files? Can you mount those folders on your MBP? If so, you could copy those files over from your Mac.
Can the other users see your Public folder (in your User directory)? You could make files available there for copying by others.
You can go to System Prefs/Sharing and add Shared Folders. (By the way, I'm assuming File Sharing is on, and in Options "Share files and folders using SMB" is checked.)
    Hope this helps.

  • Repairing system permissions

    OK,
I have wondered this already for a while now..
Last time, my microphone from my iBook stopped working.
I thought.."noo..!the wire is cut" etc.
I tried everything from settings etc etc. Nothing.
Then - I decide to try "repair system permissions" from First Aid -pane.
And VOILA! it started working again.
Once, my spotlight stopped working. And there was the same solution.
Why those System Permissions change, so that some things just stop working?
I haven't done anything outside my home folder.
    !?!?!

System permissions come from the Unix base of Mac OS X. Certain users have permissions to access certain files, while others don't. When installing an application that comes with an Installer package, that installer might change a bunch of system permissions. Therefore, it's good to repair permissions after an installation. It's not your fault.
For your interest: When repairing permissions, Disk Utility might tell you "We are using special permissions..." even though you might have clicked repair a few times. Those notification messages are totally normal and nothing to worry about.

  • Changing drive permissions

    HI,
We have upgraded our Mac Pro Workstation from Snow Leopard to Snow Leopard Server by swapping out the main boot drive for a new, blank drive to install Snow Leopard Server. The reasoning being that if anything went south, we would simply re-connect the original drive to quickly resurrect the machine.
The one thing we never considered was the permissions on the raid array (composed of 3 disks). SL Sever recognizes the drive(s) however the permissions are associated with the old SL operating system and the drive is locked. The permissions within the GUI interface state that the permissions are set to Custom and don't seem changeable - even by an admin account.
Is there a relatively simple way of changing the permissions to that of the current user / group?
Thanks very much in advance for any assistance you can provide.
    Regards,
    Cdntech.

You can't change the write permissions of the drive. The write capability is determined by two things:
    1. The hardware itself -- IOW, a drive with no burn capabilities for DVD's can't burn to that media because it physically lacks a laser that will do that.
    2. The type of media & its state. For instance, commercial DVD's are pressed, not burned, & their media layer can't be changed by shining a laser on it, period. DVD-R's can be written to once & only once. DVD-RW's can be erased & reused, but it is an all or nothing process.
What type of DVD have you put into the drive?

  • Fixing System Permissions

I (accidentally) changed the permissions of the System folder to "No Access" for everyone. Now after I boot up the loading window fades to a black screen with white text asking me for
    "login:"
I type in my username, and then it asks me for
    "password:"
but I can't type anything. So I press return and then the screen turns light blue and nothing happens.
So I need to know how to change the permissions of the System folder without having to login....I hope I'm not screwed.

Click here and follow the instructions.

  • How can I change 'Custom' permissions for TM backup disc?

I have recently had some big problems with permissions on the main disk of my G5 iMac. After fixing permissions, Time Machine then reported that my backup disk (an external 300Gb FireWire disk) was read-only and so backups couldn't take place, and the icon for the disk has a padlock shown on it. Looking at the Get Info for the disk and unlocking 'Sharing and Permissions', I see a line saying 'You have custom access', and that all permissions shown are set to 'Custom'. I don't know what this means - and worse, I can't change the permissions to any of the normal settings (Read & Write, Read Only, Write only (drop box)), and I can't check 'Ignore ownership of this problem'.
I am thus unable to do any backup. The system worked fine for at least a year before this. Has anyone any idea what 'custom' means and what I should do. I haven't found anything that seems relevant by searching this forum.

Time Machine uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions. You should not change them.
FIrst, do a +Repair Disk+ (not permissions) on the TM volume via DIsk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
    If that doesn't correct it,
If you only have a partial backup, or don't need the ones you've done, the simplest thing to do is just erase the disk/partition.
If you don't want to erase it, here's a workaround:
First, you need to find the name of the hidden file that's causing the problem Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget.
It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. If it shows a message like this: "You do not have appropriate access privileges to save file “.<nnnnnnn>” in folder <Name>"* skip to *Open the Terminal App* below.
If not, Click here to download the +Tinker Tool+ app. It allows you to change the Finder to show hidden files (among many other things). Select the first option under Finder, then click +Relaunch Finder+ at the bottom. Reverse this when done.
In a Finder window, select your Time Machine drive/partition. The very first file shown should have a name consisting of a period (dot) followed by 12 numbers and/or letters. (This is your Mac's Ethernet address). Copy or make a note of it.
Open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this: user-xxxxxx:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name). It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor (unless it's been changed via Terminal > Preferences).
At the prompt, type the following exactly as shown, substituting the name of your TM drive exactly, including any spaces, between the quotes; and the string of numbers & letters from the message where the series of x's are (keep the dot):
    <pre> sudo chmod 644 /volumes/"TM drive name"/.xxxxxxxxxxxx</pre>
    example: sudo chmod 644 /volumes/"TM Backups"/.0a1b2c3d4e5f
Press Return. You'll get some warnings and a request for your Administrator's password. Type it in (it won't be displayed) and press Return again.
Then try a +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in your Menubar, or by control-clicking (right-clicking) the TM icon in your dock.

  • Cant change HD Permissions

Hi, I hope someone can help
I had a problem earlier where my machine would not allow me to write to a drive so I changed the permissions.
I have 4 internal drives in my machine, two tell me that I do not have permission to view them. When I try and change the permissions from the preference panel nothing actually changes. It tells me that system, admin and everyone all have custom access and will not let me change it to anything else. The ignore ownership option doesnt help either.
I have found similar posts that refer to problems with external drives but none for internal. I think from what I have read this can be rectified with the correct lines of programming entered through the terminal window, hopefully someone can help me out with that info
I did have an OS failure earlier which possibly happened whilst the permissions were being changed. I now have a fresh install of the OS on a clean drive.
Apologies if i have posted this in the wrong place, I am a new user to these forums

  • How do I stop DW CS6 randomly changing file permissions via FTP?

How do I stop Dreamweaver CS6 12.0.1.5842 randomly changing file permissions when it uploads files to my web server via FTP.
I can no longer trust Dreamweaver to upload websites correctly as it changes permissions on some files which then deny the server access to the file which in turn makes the webpage unreachable/return a 403 error.
    This is driving me insane.
I'm using an early 2011 Macbook Pro 10.7.5.

    Hi,
I'm having this problem too. Has Adobe fixed the issue yet? This appears to be an Adobe problem, not all the web hosts out there. CS6 is ramdomly (meaning: not every time) changing permissions on files uploaded with it and is not usable for web work until this problem is fixed by Adobe or a solution is provided. If I wanted to use a separate FTP program I would not have recommended that my employer buy multiple Adobe CS6 product licenses. One of the primary appeals of DW is the integration of FTP into the workflow.
I am using a destop iMac2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs of 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
    OSX 10.7.5
I am using DW Version 12 Build: 5808
Dreamweaver CS4 that I was using until this new purchase was working just fine. No file permisssion changes. I am being forced to go back to using it until Adobe posts a fix for this.
I should ask while I'm here: has anyone found a solution for this yet?
    Thanks,

  • How do you change volume permissions with Solaris Volume Manager?

(Previously posted in "Talk to the Sysop" - no replies)
I'm trying to set up Solaris 9 to run Oracle on raw partitions. I have my design nailed down and I have built all the raw partitions I need as soft partitions on top of RAID 1 volumes. All this is built using Solaris Volume Manager (SVM).
However, all the partitions are still owned by root. Before I can create my Oracle database, I need to change the owner of the Oracle partitions to oracle:oinstall. The only reference I found telling me how to do this was in a Sun Blueprint and it essentially said "You can't change volume permissions directly or permanently using SVM and chown will only remain effective until the next reboot. To make the changes permanent, you must modify /etc/minor_perm". Unfortunately, I can't find an example of how to do this anywhere and the online man pages are not particularly helpful (at least not to me).
I'd appreciate a quick pointer, either to a good online resource or, even better, a simple example. For background, the volumes Oracle needs to own are:
    /dev/md/rdsk/d101-109
    /dev/md/rdsk/d201-203
    /dev/md/rdsk/d301-303
    /dev/md/rdsk/d401-403
    /dev/md/rdsk/d501-505
I provide this information because I'd like to assign some, but not all, of the devices under /dev/md/rdsk to the oracle user and I was hoping some smart person out there could illustrate an approach using simle regular expressions, at which I'm horribly poor.
    Thanks in advance,
    Adrian

Ron, I feel your pain.  I just came from an HTC also and a lot of stuff with this iPhone is bugging the crap out of me.  Who makes a phone where you can't adjust the ringer and alert volumes independently?  Instead, I have to adjust the alert volume when it is active.  C'mon guys.  Get with the program.  You won a bunch of Android users over with the 4S, but you're going to chase us all back when we're done with our contract.  Frustrating.
