Change the Always Open with .....

First time I downloaded I clicked the always open download with Adobe, which was a mistake.  How do I "undo" that?
Thanks.

Click the download once to select it, then press Command-I ("Get Info" in File menu). In the Get Info window, look for this section -
Select the app you want from the Open With pulldown menu. If you want to make a global fix for all items of that type, then click the "Change All" button.

  • The "always open with-"  option doesn't work!

Is there a way to get the "Always open with" option when doing a (control) (option) click on a file to actually ALWAYS open with the application I choose? Could this feature be broken or perhaps mislabeled?
Here's what happens; I'll set a file to "always open with" one application. I work on that file and save it. The next time I try to open that file it opens with the snow leopard default application instead of using the application I directed it to "Always open with".
I don't want to open every file type with this application so I'm not setting "apply to all" in the info window/ inspector, I simply want this one file to always open with the application I've selected.
I'm hoping some of you super mac users will know a trick to make this work.

I want to open a few select files with a non-default application (now that the creation code is not used.)...If I work on the file and make/save any changes, it reverts to the default app.
Aha! Okay, I don't think any of us were getting that in the initial posts. You are correct. Snow Leopard no longer uses Type and Creator codes by default, but they are still there. Various things are keeping you from doing what you want.
    1) Newer programs that do not use Type and Creator codes at all still need a way to tell the OS what files belong to them. Since at least back as far as Leopard (likely earlier), the system now uses Uniform Type Identifiers. As far as keeping track of what files belong to what applications, they serve the same purpose as Type and Creator codes. So when you save changes, it will indeed revert back to the default app since the file once again gets saved with that program's UTI data.
    2) Some programs use both UTI and Type and Creator codes. Usually older apps that have come from PPC code. I would guess that would be either because the developer doesn't want to waste time removing the code that adds the Type and Creator codes to the files, or more likely, to make sure files passed to other users still on older Macs that don't use UTI won't have trouble opening them.
    3) I use some much older apps which have still not been rewritten at all for Intel Macs and are still all PPC code. They still write Type and Creator codes.

  • How change the File Open With list of apps?

In Bridge CS3, how does one edit the list of applications in the File > Open With menu (also available from the contextual menu for any image).
The list contains a number of applications that I would never use to open an image, and I would like to add to it, a new image editor (pixelmator) that does not appear in it. I have looked in the Bridge Help and the Preferences dialog and don't see any option to do this.

OK, I have now learned that Mac OS keeps the list of which apps to open what, in the "launch services database."
This database can be cleaned up and reset which somewhat simplifies the list that is displayed by the Finder OR by Bridge CS3.
Here is an article on how to reset the launchdb:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486
Be sure to read all the way to the end as there are updated instructions down among the comments.
Here is a thread in the Apple Support forums discussing the same issue, and it includes links to some 3rd-party programs that can reset launch services without use of a lengthy Terminal command:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1289317
Even after rebuilding the launchdb, I find that a large number of apps are "registered" to open JPG files, including Camino, Opera, TextWrangler and others with only a tenuous connection to JPG. I don't understand why this is, and I would still like to find a way to limit the JPG Open-With list to a few graphics programs. But cleaning up the launchdb as described in the linked pages, did get rid of some programs and added some missing ones.
Hope this actually constructive info is useful to others.

  • How do I change the default "open with" application for certain files??  I've tried EVERYTHING!!

    Hi guys!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone help me!!!  I have been trying for ages to change this!!  It is SO frustrating!!  I recently bought a new MacBook Pro 13" after my old one (2009) got stolen.  Went from Snow Leopard to 10.8.2, restored all my apps and files etc (thanks goodness I backed up).
NOW I have a problem!  All my .xls and .doc files open up with Pages and Numbers, and not OpenOffice.  NO MATTER WHAT I DO!!!
The basic "change open with" "always use this application" story doesn't work.  It always reverts back to Pages or Numbers.  I also tried a Terminal Command I found on this forum from way back in 2010.  But that doesn't work either.  I also tried a .pst deletion but I don't have a .com.apple.launches.pst file!
PLEASE GUYS.  PLEASE!  SOMEONE HELP ME HERE!!!!!!!!!!  It's driving me nuts!!!!!  LIKE NUTS!!!!!!!

Here is what I would do:
Update OpenOffice to the latest Mac OS X version for improved compatibiity with Mountain Lion.
Boot into Safe Mode to clear caches, verify/repair permissions, and rebuild font database, etc.
Reboot, holding down the shift key until you see a progress bar on the grey boot screen.
At the login prompt, and before you click the right arrow button to login, press and hold shift again.
    Reboot normally.
Now follow sig's advice, and specify OpenOffice as the can opener for Word and Excel files.
If OpenOffice installs into a /Applications folder as individual writer, and sheet applications, then use these names respectively for Word and Excel files.
LibreOffice (what I use) only offers the LibreOffice application choice.

  • "Always Open With" Corrupt?

I've noticed that Adobe GoLive keeps trying to hog (open) my RealPlayer files (.ram, .smil) --even after I click "always open with" and specifically designate RealPlayer as the default program for .ram or .smil.
It's like the "always open with" command is being bypassed or ignored by Adobe... or it's corrupt... or, for some reason, it thinks that I'm talking about that specific file (like "12432.ram") rather than the broader file category ("__.ram") itself.
This happens even after I've trashed both Adobe and RealPlayer. This happens even after I've designated in RealPlayer's prefs that .rams and .smils belong to RP and RP only.
The "always open with" command also seems to not work w/StuffIt owning .sit files.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Any help?
    Thanks,
    David

Have you tried telling the system what to open which documents with?
To do this you click on the file and select "get info" from the File menu. In the window that comes up, make a selection in the "open with" field. After you do that... click on the "change all" button. It will then ask for confirmation. This should help...

  • How to change 'always open with' file settings with parallels desktop 4?

    Hi all.
here's my problem; parallels desktop 4 has hijacked file association on some of my file types and wont let me change them back to their mac equivilants
Accidentally clicking on one of these parallels associated apps causes the virtual machine to boot up, slowing my pc down dramatically and causing me grief.
Setting certain files to 'always open with' the equivilant mac app [eg. trying to get text documents to open with textedit as oppose to xp's notepad, hasn'thelped]
    any suggestions ? - i am stumped
    Thanks!

Delete Windows Applications folder in Virtual Machine folder (it's from Mac Side); disable Shared Applications from Configuration Editor.
    ---or---
...other permanent solution to try on Mac side
1 select a file in your finder (e.g. .doc)
    2 press <cmd>
3 go to 'open with' option...
4 select the correct application (e.g. Microsoft Word)
    5 click 'change all' - done...go try
When Microsoft Word is already selected, change that to another app, click 'change all', then set it back to Microsoft Word again and once more click 'change all'.
If still no joy, try strong language....

  • "Always Open with" check box forces you to use quicktime player, can't change it to VLC. Any help or Apple is really trying to take over???

When I Open an .avi movie with VLC and check the box "always open with", a dialog shows up saying that I can't change the item "...avi" to always open with the selected application. The item is either locked or damaged, or in a folder you don't have permission to modify (error code - 54)
So in summary I can't use VLC to always open .avi files. The file is in a folder that I created in my desktop with all permissions and working perfect (not damaged) I am the admin and owner of the Laptop and file.
The same happens when I check the box for .mov or .mp4 files but with them I don't even get the dialog box with the massage, it just opens directly with vlc and when you think it went through, I double click to open the file and it opens with quicktime. No matter how many times I check the box "Always open with" It will always open with quicktime.
On my other laptop, an old Sony Vaio with Windows 7 I never had this kind of stress. Why does this kind of thing only happens with Apple?

  • Always open with and Change all doesn't work

    Hello,
I'm having trouble changing what application should be used when opening movie files (.avi, .mkv etc).
I'm using mplayer (not the gui extended one), and I've made an .app that runs a script to open the chosen file in mplayer.
It works fine if I tell the individual file to always open with that specific application, but if I choose Get info so that I can use the "change all", and got my own app chosen, it just changes back to the default one.
I did a repair permissions on my disk, but nothing changes.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

    Update:
I decided to make an app in Automator.
In automator I chose "Get Selected Finder Items" to get the file I'm trying to open.
After that I added a "Run Shell Script", set the pass input to as arguments. The command was
    /PATH/TO/YOUR/mplayer "$@"
Then save as application. Worked fine for me to set .avi to use it, and also use "change all".
So I guess the problem got solved. But it doesn't explain why my app made in the applescript editor couldn't have the "change all" clicked without changing to something else.

You are describing an iTunes problem, not an iPod touch problem. Try posing in the iTunes forum.

Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, my AOL messages sometimes, but not always open with a blank page. If I open AOL in Firefox, the messages open fine.  This does not happen with any messages by any means, and it is not any type of certain message. In fact, in the same screen I can often open an email from the same sender with email intact. This is weird. Sometimes I close the page and open a new page. Sometimes that works and sometimes it does not. It is a very annoying thing.

    Hi,
When you start Messages fro the first time you are asked for an Apple ID
When this is verified and entered it appears in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts and is Enabled.
The App should have also picked on on those iChat Accounst you had before.
These should be Enabled if they were when you last used iChat.
Exactly which "Accounts" are logged in can be seen in Message Menu > Accounts and will include the iMessage "Account" and Bonjour.
In the Window menu you will see CMD +0 for the Messages window and CMD+1 for the "Buddies" window which is a combined list at this stage.
Go to the Preferences > General Section and Untick the "Collect all accounts into one list".
This will give you separate iChat type Buddy lists.
You can check if that account/Buddy list is set to Invisible or if in the Preferences > Accounts > Security you have settings that will block some people from seeing you as On line.
You are saying Buddies can see you as On Line which implies they are still sending to your AIM based Names (@Mac.com is a valid AIM Screen Name)
I am not sure from your post if you are trying to iMessage their email IDs thinking they are Apple IDs and that they are using Messages as well.
There is no Buddy list for iMessages side
No-one can tell you are "On Line" until they have your details in the "To" spot in Messages with the correct iMessaged contact info (iPhone Number or Apple ID)
Obviously an Apple ID can be an email or look like one.
In some cases they are also valid AIM Screen Names as well.
In the case or the @mac.com name you may have linked this Apple ID to iMessages as well.

    Why?

    Hello,
Don't worry, this should not cause any problems. Side to side, the sites look the same, just in the link it goes to it activates SSL security (That's good)

  • Get Info "Change All" button doesn't keep the proper "Open With" app

I have a small but annoying problem that appears in Leopard 10.5.2 (been there since original 10.5.0 install) that I have tried to troubleshoot but can't solve.
    The problem is:
-With some of my file types, the wrong "Open With" application is displayed when I view a Get Info for that file type. So to fix this, I open a Get Info window on one of those types of files, and choose the PROPER default application in the "Open With" slot. This works, and then the new proper application name now shows in that slot. So then I click the "Change All" button and apply to all files of that file type. I receive the warning that I will be changing ALL files of that type. I choose "continue" because that is what I desire.
However, once I do that, (click Change All, then Continue button), the old, wrong application name jumps back the Open With slot! So the new, correct application choice doesn't "stick".
Oddly enough, it sort of DOES work, because if I then re-click in the Open With slot, although the old, the wrong application is back listed again, if I look up above that name, then my actual desired application is listed in a list, and it has the word (Default) beside it.
So if I do actually now double click any file of that type, then the proper application DOES launch and open the file.
But why does the Get Info window still display the wrong, non-default application in Open With? And furthermore, this causes all file types of that kind, to display the WRONG icon in any Finder window. They of course display, the icon of what is in the Open With slot list.
I am having this problem only with two file types and apps. (Cubase and Pro Tools---DAW audio apps). All of my Cubase files display a Pro Tools icon, and show as Open With: "Pro Tools" when of course it should display Open With: Cubase. As stated in the Open With list, Cubase is indeed there among other programs and it has the word (Default) beside it. So it sort of works when launching files. But I still cannot get Cubase to "stick" and stay in Open With after Change All!
Can anyone offer any tips on what might cause this and what fix is needed?
    Thanks so much in advance!
    Wade

Well, I tried rebuilding the Launch services with the command listed but still no luck. After having no luck with that and deleting caches, etc....I also, went to my home (user) directory and in Preferences, I deleted the com.apple.launchservices.plist file. I restarted and checked and still the same result.
Also, I want to emphasize again that the file type I am discussing DOES actually launch with the correct application. (Cubase files in my example).
But it is just annoying that ALL of my Cubase files display the Pro Tools application icon, and in Get Info they are listed to open with Pro Tools. But they actually do launch Cubase if double clicked.
And one other VITAL note....if I open Get Info for one of these files, and change the Open With from Pro Tools to Cubase....then that choice DOES "stick" and retain. (if I "don't" also click Change All)
It's only when I click "Change All" that it DOESN'T stick and the list selection jumps back to Pro Tools. I hope that may offer some clarity.
Thanks for the tips but I am still back at square one.

Ever since I installed IOS7, my Iphone 5 (10 months old) has always opened with a message that my voicemail password is incorrect.    But I've never at any time put in a voicemail password, so I can't get into the site to put this right, and it didn't happen before I installed IOS7.  The message goes away as soon as I cancel it, but it's very irritating.  Any suggestions?

Call your carrier & have them reset your voicemail, then set things up again. Most carriers require a password for voicemail.

I have an original iPad with the latest software.  When I send an email, the keyboard opens with halk on the right side and halk of the left across the body of the email.  How can I change this?

Tap and hold on the Keyboard key at the bottom right side of the right portion of the keyboard.  You can use the Dock and Merge option from the menu.
Alternatively you can drag the keyboard down and move slightly left, to get it to merge.

  • "Always open with" (this application) doesn't work

I'm fighting to set Photoshop as the default application to open TIFF files. The present persistent default is Preview. In theory, I should right-click on a TIFF file, choose Open with > Other..., then select Photoshop and check "Always open with" checkbox.
It doesn't work. The file is opened in Photoshop, but after I close the file and double-click THE SAME FILE in Finder, my Mac happily launches Preview again.

    Hi,
    Try the other way,
    1. Right click on the tiff file, choose 'Get Info'.
    2. In the get info window choose 'Photoshop' for 'Open with'.
    3. Click the 'Change All...' button.
    This might work.
