Change the default program to open a document?

Howdy,
Is there anyway to change the default program to open a .doc file?

I can't seem to find a post with a solution to this problem. I guess I'm not figuring out the correct search term(s) to use.
Could be launch services is corrupt and needs to be rebuilt. The usual symptom is double entries in the right context "open with" menu, not the inability to change the default application, but it might be it. Open the Terminal application and copy/paste one of the following commands into it and hit return.  I think the first one is the one you want; the second may be for Lion/Mtn Lion.
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • How do I change the default program to open Pages docs to the old (4.3) version instead of the new one (5.0)?

How do I change the default program to open Pages docs to the old (4.3) version instead of the new one (5.0)? When I do what Apple said and go to a Pages file in finder and select "get info" then select "Pages 4.3" and "change all" it just defaults to the new one even though I'd selected the old one. Do I need to completely uninstall the new version of Pages or is there another work around because the new version of Pages comes dreadfully short of the features I need that are included in the old one?

HOWEVER, if you modified a document in 5.0, 4.3 can't open it. You'll have to use Time Machine to replace the modified version with an earlier version that was last modified in 4.3.
    Actually there is a workaround.
If you open the file in Pages 5, it can then be exported on Pages 0.9 format to another folder. I had to do this as the document was only in iCloud and couldn't be recoverd by Time Machine.
    Worked for me!

  • Cannot change the default program to open a specific file type.

Whenever I attempt to change the default program to open a file, it automatically reverts to whatever was selected previously.
I work with a lot of .ai files and my default Illustrator version is set to Creative Cloud. CC crashes constatnly on my machine, however CS6 runs smooth as silk. I'd like to be able to double click an .ai file and have it open in CS6, not CC. When I right click > Get Info > Open with and change it, it reverts as soon as I click "Change all..."
This isn't a huge deal... only takes a few seconds out of my day but it isn't something I should have to worry about.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I just successfully changed on my .docx to open into Pages. I went the same route that you mentioned... Right click---> Get Info---> Open With and changed it to Pages. When I clicked Change All, a dialog came up asking me if I am sure that I want to change all of my .docx to open in Pages. I click accept and tested it. Now my .docx open in Pages.
So my question is, is your issue just applying to .ai files? Or is affecting other files, such as .docx? If it's just affecting .ai files, then there maybe an underlying reason for that. And it may not be able to be changed.
    Just a thought.

  • How do I change the default program that opens .acsm files?

I am borrowing library eBooks to read on my Sony Reader.  I want to ensure that Adobe Digital Editions is the default program to open .acsm files, but am not sure how to do that.  Thanks for the help!

Right (control) click on the .acsm file > select Open With > then select Adobe Digital Editions.
Likewise you can select all of files in a folder with Edit > Select All > then Get Info and set them all to Open with: Adobe Digital Editions or whatever.

  • When I try to change the default program for opening a specific file type The "Always use the selected program to open this type of file" does not highlight.

  • How do you globally change the default program for opening photo files?

I want to adjust my system so that when I double click a photo file, Preview does not automatically launch.  I work in Photoshop all the time and would prefer that it be the default program for pictures.  I have already changed the "when you insert a picture CD" command in CD's & DVD's in System preferences but this does not have any effect on when I double click on a picture file to open it; Preview always launches and opens the picture there.  That automatic opening behavior is fine but I need it to happen in Photoshop.

Assuming your pictures are all .jpg files: select any .jpg by clicking once on it in the Finder, then press Command+I to Get Info about it. In the Open With: section of the Get Info window, change the preferred application from Preview to Photoshop, then click the Change All button.
Now any .jpg file that you double-click will open in Photoshop.

  • How do I change the default program to open PDFs?

I would like Adobe Acrobat 9 to open my PDFs as a default program. When I followed the Adobe prompt to update (pop up), it changed the default to Adobe Reader 10.

He's talking about Acrobat 9, not Reader.
Those two versions can co-exist, but it's not a recommended situation. Only Acrobat X and Reader X can officially co-exist without issues.
With any other combination, you might run into problems, like the one described above.

  • How can I change the default program to open Pages files in Finder from Pages 5.0 to Pages '09?

I’ve tried. It seems Mavericks can’t tell the difference between the programs or won’t let me.

Open DIsk Utility and in the toolbar select Disk Image. The file selector will open and you'll have to do three things: 1) just as with any file, name it and point the file selector to where you want it to be saved, 2) near the bottom you'll see name - type iWork 2013 and 3) below that select the image size. Click on size, choose custom and type 1500 MB then click on the Create button.
Some time will pass and then you'll see an external disk pop up on your desktop and/or the Finder window sidebar. Drag the three programs into it and eject it like any other external disk. Now delete the programs from your applications window.
Where ever it was you pointed the file selector to you'll see the file you created. Double click on it and the disk image will mount again.

  • How do I change the default programe for "open in editor"?

    Hello all,
    DVDSP4.03.
In the assets tab if I ctrl+click on a Photoshop (.psd) file it gives the option to "open in editor". If I do this it opens the file in Preview, when I would like it to open the file with Photoshop. How do I change this so the "editor" become Photoshop?
    Many thanks
    Mark

    Try this:
Quit DVDSP. Go to your PSD file and press Apple and "I" to open the info dialogue box. Under "open with" select Photoshop and select "Change All". Restart (just to be safe) and try again from within DVDSP.
    Hope this helps,
    Jeff

  • I can't make ADE the default program to open EPUB and MOBI files

Hello, I can't seem to be able to make ADE the default program to open EPUB and MOBI files. I use Windows 7. I used to use a Firefox plug-in to view these files, and before that I used Calibre. I have been told that these are both inadequate. When I go into the Control Panel to change the default program to open these files, however, ADE is not listed as one of the possibilities (only Firefox and Calibre are), and when I search it just brings up Adobe Acrobat. Any advice? Thanks, Bill.

I think I have answered my own question. This time I clicked on Browse for the program to set as the default, and I selected the Downloads program, and there it was. For some reason I had to re-install it several times, and it kept re-installing and re-installing. But all seems to be OK now.

  • Changing the default program for a file format

I was folloing the steps to change the default program to open a PDF, by going to Get Info > Open width > Adobe Acrobat and pressed Change All. All the PDF got changed to open with Acrobat Reader, but the next time, after I boot up the computer everything is back as it was, PDF files are opening with Preview and not Acrobat...
How to change it for once and for all?
    Thanks

I been working hours on the same problem as lessismo.  I've deleted every Adobe file and folder in the user's library, deleted preferences, etc. and can't seem to find a solution.  It works fine when I login as a different user so I know it's not the machine.  Any suggestions?

  • How do I change the default settings for opening documents on my macbook?

Hi I would like to know how to change the default settings for opening documents on my macbook. Everytime I try to open a doc. it automatically opens with Textedit, instead of Pages or another program.

Select any particular document you wish to fix. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select the desired Default Application from the dropdown menu. Click on the Change All button to extend the change to all similar documents.
You can only assign one default application to one type of document.

  • How do I change the default software that opens when I click on a document?

I'm not sure if this is the right neighborhood to post this question, but here goes. How do I change the default software that opens when I click on a document icon. I've been without MSWord for a long while, so all my word processing docs have been written in TextEdit, the stock mini-word processor that comes with OSX. Now I have MSWord and I no longer need TextEdit. Even more importantly, I'd like Word to automatically open when I click on a doc created in TextEdit. Adding ".doc" at the end doesn't do it. It's still refers to TextEdit to open the document.
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    John

Select a document of that type in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, change the application under Open With, click on Change All, and confirm your action.
