Change the home directory from terminal for another copy of the OS.

Mac Mini OS X 10.8.1
Main drive for OS Vertex 4 SSD
Data on other Drive Seagate Goflex Thunderblot 3TB on a 1 TB Partition.
Backup of both Main drive and Data drive on a 3rd drive.
When i boot into the back it uses the data from the thunder bolt drive and not the data drive backup.
If the orginial data drive ever became damaged and i need to point to the other data backup drive can this be done from terminal on another boot drive.
let says Drive A is the OS X 10.8
Drive B is the main data drive.
Drive C has 2 partition C1 for OS X and C2 for Data backup.
When booting from Drive C it gets its data from Drive B because its a clone of A.
If drive B becomes dmaged I will not be able to boot from drive C. ( This has happend )
With a Clean install on drive D I can boot. How can i use terminal to Tell Drive C1 to use data from C2 instead of Drive B?
Hope I explained this well.

Can you explain exactly what "the issue" is?
You can use dscl from the command line to change a home directory (as described in this hint), but that still requires you to be using that startup volume. Hence, it is no different than using System Preferences. If System Preferences won't work for you, then dscl probably wouldn't either.

  • Moving User's Home Directory from one Xserve to another

Does anyone know the procedure for moving users (Home Directory) from one server to another?
Is there an application that can do this?
    Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I see your problem and I think I will soon have the same one.
I suppose one option would be to delete out the .plist. Then when the user logs in the server should recreate it. If the user had customized it they would of course lose any information.
You could also setup a loginhook that would just run the needed defaults write... and update them as needed. Actually I think that would be the easiest option. The only down side would be making sure every use logs in once before you remove the script.
Hmm I guess another option would be a script that loops through all the users accounts and runs the command as the user. sudo -u usershortname defaults... But I am not sure if this would have to be done on the server it self or if it could be done through a client.
Sorry for the rambling but I am trying to come up with an answer..

    Hi,
I have installed Postgresql 8.3 for Mac. How do I cd into Postgresql 8.3 directory in Applications Directory from Terminal? Does Mac OS terminal allow space in Directory Name?
    My command is:
    cd /Applications/PostgreSQL 8.3

But in Finder>Applications>PostgreSQL 8.3, it shows itself as a directory.

  • How can I change my "Home directory" folder name?

    Hello, everyone.
I was given a pre-owned MacBook Pro that's running OS 10.6.8.  How can I change the name on the Home directory folder?  I was able to change the Administrator Account settings, but the Home directory still shows the previous owner's name.  It bothers me a bit, though, to see the previous owner's name still come up on the Home folder.
I came across the instruction listed below, but I can't get past step 4.  It instructs me "rename it just like I would rename any folder."  I can't seem to rename it, though.  The cursor doesn't come up when I click on the folder name.
For Mac OS X v10.5 or later
    Enable the root user.
    Log in as root.
    Navigate to the /Users folder.
Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).
    Disable the root user.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi everyone,
    I followed this https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3872
and got to the stage of having renamed my Home folder with the new name but the Home folder is STILL designated to the old name?
When I try and create a new user with the new name, I don't get asked if I'd like to use the existing name as Home folder, I get told I can't use the newname because it exists already - thats the end of it - no further options.
So to clarify - I now have oldname folder STILL assigned as Home folder. A newname folder with all my stuff in - apps, desktop, etc etc but this is just another user folder.
Interestingly at login stage, the oldname folder isn't an option. I think I've confused the system somewhere by titling things differently at some stage in an attempt to rename Home folder.
I'm running Mountain Lion (as of yesterday) and because I've kinda lost the use of my User folder as the Home folder, can't get to my Time Machine. I'm in trouble but I'm trying not to panic. Would appreciate any help!

  • Deleted home directory from XRAID any way to recover?

    Hi
Hope someone maybe able to help me with this issue which is causing me great agony at the moment.
We had storage issues on our Apple XRAID and on the RAID it stored approx 700 user home folders. There were under a folder called 'home directories'. A lot of these areas where fairly sizable so we were advised that we can run a command in terminal which can clear the trash folders in a users home directory.
This would certainly help clear some of the unnecessary space that was being taken up.
So in terminal a command was run:
    rm - R -v /Volumes/RAID/Homedirectories/*/.Trash
We were told that the last statement would have interrogated each user home folder and deleted the trash folder.
We found though that whilst this command worked and deleted the trash, it also deleted all user home folders and everything within these folders.
I have a massive dilemma now as all the work is lost and our backup software wasn't working at the same time so I not able to do a restore. I was using RetroSpect 8.
I have tried various undelete software to interrogate the RAID and see if it can recover files. I have used:
Stella Phoenix, Rstudio for Mac and Disk Warrior.
These programs have not been able to recover anything.
I was going to use a freeware tool called TestDisk and photorec buts its going to take about 3 days for it to run on the XRAID as its 3tb in size.
Does anyone think I could try something else to help me find the accidently deleted data. With the rm commands that have been run is there any way to recover from it from an XRAID.
I have found some other software cannot see the XRAID. Does anyone know of other software which has been successful?
    Thank you

Since this issue and through the countless data recovery methods used. I am concerned that the disks will have gone through **** with intensive interrogation of that disks.
Am I just being anal or do I have a genuine reason to be slightly worried.
I am going to put a bid to my seniors about maybe purchasing a new storage device to replace the XRAID and maybe use the XRAID for just backup/archival purposes.
What suggestions do users have with other Storage Arrays? I ideally want something where I can at least have about 5tb but with the option to grow and I want to be able to use both the XRAID and the new storage device in conjunction. Could I possibly have a replication between the new storage array and the XRAID?
Which devices out there would be an ideal replacement for the Apple XRAID that others recommend?
    United Digital Hyperstar
ACTIVE RAID ES (From the developers of the original XRAID)
    Promise vTrak E-CLASS
Am I right in saying that I would replace the existing fibre channel card in the Xserve with a new 4 port 4Gb card. so I can attach 2 ports of the existing Xserve RAID and the other 2 ports to the a new storage device.
My plan would be to use RAID5 for redundancy, any benefits of using some other RAID such as 1+0 or RAID50?
    Thanks

  • Setup Home Directory that is on another server?

    Hi there,
I have setup a server (10.4) where each users home directory is kept on an xserve raid that is connected via fiber. When a user logs onto this server, they can mount their home folder or the other shared folder which has a bunch of stuff in it.
I also have another server (10.3) which does not have user home directories setup on it. What I would like to do is setup the 10.3 server to mount a home directory that is on the xserve raid when a user logs in. So regardless of which server they are authenticating to, the home directory that is mounted sits on the xserve raid. Again, the XServe Raid is not connected to this server (10.3)
    Here are the specifications:
    10.4 server: server4.local
XServe connected to it via fiber
Users on this server have the home address of: /Volumes/XServeRaid/Faculty Folders/asmith
    10.3 server: serverone.local
What would the information be for the following fields on the other server?
Mac OS X Server/Share Point URL:
    Path:
    Home:
    Thanks very much
    Andrew

The way you do what you are describing is to keep the Account information in the same place it is now, but change the pointer to a User's (or collection of Users) Home Folder.
    To transition to that:
    • decide where the User's new Home will be.
    • create a new folder for that user at the new location.
    • copy the user's files to the new location.
    • change the home pointer in their account record.

  • Change username/home directory

    Hi,
I want to change my username and home directory. My Mac was gifted to me and while setting it up for me, they mispelt my name. I have been using it that way for quite  some time, and now I want to change it. I am following this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1428 and it seems quite easy.
If I rename the home directory, will Time Machine back up all stuff in my home directory once again? My home directory is quite huge ~70% of my hard disk and so I will lose a lot of old back ups due to this. Any workarounds?
    Thanks.

Yes.  Time Machine will back up your home directory again.
    Your choices are:
    1) Leave the name as is, and you won't have to worry about the large back up for a while, or
    2) If you are out of space on your current backup disk, buy another external disk, rename the user and home directory on your Mac and start a new round of backups, keeping the old one around until you no longer need the files,
    3) Rename the home directory and let Time Machine delete the oldest of your backed up files as it runs out of disk space.
    Have I missed any?

  • How to change users home directory home folder name?

Is there a way in Mountain Lion to simply change the name of the home directory home folder name without it throwing off anything else for that particular user?
I read the article about 'Enabling and using the "root" user', but it specifically says for 'Lion' and not 'Mountain Lion'
When I get to step 8 there is no clear place to enter an adminstator account name and password so I can't go any further.
I also did a quick test with a newly created user and after setting some preferences and customizing the desktop, I changed the home directory name and I pretty much lost all my preferences after logging back in. It's as if changing the home directory name in any way shape or form literally wipes out the previous user and you have to start anew.
I don't want to risk changing the home directory name and end up losing essentially my whole user setup, but I really want a different name for my home directory and I don't want anything else to change. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    Hi Blastic,
I'm trying to do the same thing.  I did follow Apple's instructions and while they are easy to follow.....I was unable to rename the folder as described  (clicking on it or pressing enter).  I did enable root user, I did log out and re-log in as root user.....and I got stopped.  I simply could not rename the folder as per Apple's instructions and ther is NOTHING on the internet about it......save for your beacon of light!  Thanks for the post.  I'm using 13 inch MacBookPro Mid 2010 2.4 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB ram, OS 10.8

  • What can I do to change my home page from bing to google- I have tried 50 times and bing always shows back up as my home page

I have done everything firefox says to do to change my home page. I want ti to be google but when I drag the icon over to my home page it only stays there for a few minutes and then bing shows back up. there is a little message that appears and says "someone has tried to change your home page and we have blocked it". I don't want bing aas a home page-don't know how it got on there anyway.

Try clicking Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
    Add/Remove Programs
Look for something called Windows Live Search Protection or Bing Search Protection.
If you cant find that, try clicking Windows Live in the list, then clicking the change button. Untick anything that mentions Bing or the Bing Toolbar.

  • Change My Home Directory Name to Match My Short Name

Somewhere in the process of Migration and Setup Assistant accross 3 computers, I need to change my home folder name to match my shortname. It is getting a little confusing to have two short "names."
My home folder is - admin
My short name is - bobbyv
I would like tho change my home folder to bobbyv
The admin account as you can guess is root, i have two other accounts, one that is admin and one that is not. I know about the advanced options in the accounts preference pane, but I do not want to change in without knowing what I'm doing because I do not want to have an empty and clean new home folder, my data is important.
    Thanks everyone.

Changing the short name is possible, but it is rather involved. Search for "change short name" on this site. It's easiest to create a new account and then transfer your data to that account.

  • Change "Generate Reports" permission from terminal??

I manage about 500 apple computers (all running 10.4.11). It is the time of year were I have to do inventory and for some reason that Generic Image that we used to image all of our machines does not have the "Generate Reports" option in Sharing enabled. I know there is a way to enable it in Terminal, but I can't find the commands.
Is there anyone that can help?
Pushing out a Terminal command would be a million times faster than VNCing in and changing the settings in the GUI.

You should be able to do this by sending a kickstart command through the Send UNIX Command function:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108030
    Hope that helps.

Both datasource information are totally different.
Delta changes are captured in the field3 in ODS1 and Infocube 1 also.
Field3 and Field 2-3 is the same field .Infocube 2 - I have included infoobject and populating the value from ODS1-Field3.
    The question is
Whenever I capture the changes from ODS1-field3 -the similar changes also needs to be updated here in infocube2 -field2- 3.

Is their any other way Can I capture the transactional data changes in infocube 2.
    Advance thanks

Thanks for quick update. You are right.
There is no problem from  ODS1 --->Infocube1 - Delta is working properly.
    My question is ,
ODS1 has a field 3. Whenever new changes happen for this field3 - I have to capture the simialr changes in the Infocube 2 and the fieldis 2-3.
field3 and field 2-3 is the same field infoobject .
Whenever the changes occurs inthe tranasation - ODS1-field 3 will capture the changes. How can I capture the similar changes in Infocube 2 and the field 2-3.
