1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
2. Click the Sharing icon.
3. If File Sharing is off, click Start.
4. Check to be sure there is a name in the Computer Name field. You may need to stop and restart file sharing for this change to take affect.

  • I changed the name of my imac to reflect it's new location, but inadvertently, it unchecked the box to allow the administrative user account to administer the machine.  I am trying to reinstall with a time machine backup and am unable

I need a little help.  I changed the name of my imac to reflect it's new location, but inadvertently, when I saved the change, the system unchecked the "allow this account to administer the computer" so now I can't make any changes....  I tried to reinstall the OS, but it wants me to go online while installing and use my apple id, but this is not my iMAC, so I don't want to use my account.  Also, I am working in a building that will not allow me network access until I authenticate, which can't be done unless I open the browser first.  So I'm stuck at this point.  I can't even restore a time machine backup that I have because it gives the error message that the system encountered an error.  Any suggestions?

  • How do I change the name of my IMAC

I purchased a new IMAC i7, a little over a year ago.  Transfered the files/programs from my older IMAC to the new one using Migration.  Shortly after that the hard drive went out and I brought it in to be replaced.  The guy at Genius bar said they changed the name of my computer when they reloaded OSX onto the machine.   I then had to reload everything from the old hard drive which I had backed up prior to the failure.  Permission issues have been a problem but through some help from the Genius bar I was able to get past that.  Now, when I sign into my computer I have a User name and password that has never changed.  Works fine.  I tried to set up a VNC and used a program that told me what information I had to use, based on a scan of my Imac.  It gave me the UserName of the computer that the Genius Bar had changed it to, way back when.  That doesn't work and won't let me connect.   I typed "whoami" into the Terminal and it gives me my signin name and the computer name together.  Computer name is in ().  So after reading some entrees here I go to preferences>sharing and it gives a third name as my computer name.   So, how do I get this Imac to a single name?  I don't care which name, just a name that can be recognized by the VNC.
    Thanks

Ok, thanks.  I changed the name to the name that the Apple Store had assigned the computer when I had the internal drive replaced.   I then purchased a third app for VNC, and that worked, since the app I had would still not recognize the computer.  So I appear to be able to access my computer from anywhere on my IPAD.
    Thanks

  • HT204216 how do you change the name of your iMac you setup when first cut on

need to change the name i assigned my imac when first cut on.

thanks. I starred it for you. I wonder why the first phone put my name in there and this one didn't. Everthing I did was the same.
    Further:
I changed it in the itunes left column. Does that name not carry over to iTunes-Preferences-Devices??

I just purchased a 2nd iMac and transferred data from old to new.  I am running both at different locations.  Can I change the name of the old for networking purposes?  If so, how is this done? They are now clones.

    1. Yes.
    2. Open the Sharing pane of System Preferences and change it.

  • How do I change the name of an iMac I bought second hand?

Just bought a second-hand iMac G5 PPC (for minimal use for volunteer work, etc.)  I know I can't upgrade any further, but I would like to rename it permanently so I don't have to delete the original owner's name that keeps popping up and put in my "user" name and password.  How can I get rid of anything that ins't mine?

Hopefully you also received the original install disks?

Go to \Music\ abnd find the iTunes folder.
    Right click - Properties.

  • I have changed the name and password for my Time Capsule and now the Time Machine will not connect

    Mac Book Pro
    1TB Time Capsule.
Yesterday I changed the name and password on my time capsule and also the name and password of the wifi network as I was having problems with the speed of the internet when using Safari on any of my devices (1 Macbook pro, 1 macbook air, 27" iMac, iPhone and iPad) all other internet services were working fine (email etc.) This seems to have solved the problem.
However, since then, my time machine back ups will not reconnect and there is no option for me to reconnect to the existing back up for my macbook pro.
When I enter the time machine preferences it shows as below that there are no back ups.
Then, when I go to select a drive to use which should be the MacBook under the Backup disks the only option is for me to Remove Disk...
So, my question is, how do I reconnect to an existing Time Machine back up for my MacBook pro as I really do not want to erase and start all over again.
Warning - In my naiveté, I did click on the MacBook in 'Available Disks' but I got the impression that it was about to start a whole new back up and not work with the existing one.
(And does anybody have an inkling as to why there was a problem with Safari on all my devices? I downloaded Google Chrome and that worked fine).

    Simply reset the Time Machine.
    See A4 here http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You can then mount the TC disk in finder after you reboot the computer.
You should be able to reselect the TC disk and then it will say it is going to start a new backup.
Ignore this.. when the TM actually loads the TC disk it will discover the existing backup and continue the backup.. but it will give no hint until it actually starts that it won't start a new backup. you just have to believe it won't.. and mostly it works..
Please also install the widget A1 so you have some idea what TM is doing.

  • How to change the name of the Mac I connect to in the drop-down window.

Using my brand new MacBook, in the drop down menu when I connect to my iMac, it shows up as my name ( which is Derek Walton's Computer) ...... How can I change the name that shows up here? I have tried all areas that iI can think of and altered my name on the iMac but to no avail - e.g. - Network Sharing, Account Name, and so on.... anything anywhere I have changed... but it always shows up with my full name. I have however managed to get the name in the sidebar of the Leopard window to read as I want ( Derek's iMac) but that is all.
Also, when I am using Airport on my MacBook, in the drop-down menu I see also other neighbours connections.... I am wondering therefore does it follow that they can see my wireless connection ( as Derel Waltons Computer)?
This has been vexing me all night and I am geting very frustrated, but I bet there is a simple answer..... for those that know!
Thanks in advance for any help you care to put my way.
    Derek

It is not a simple issue. Not the same as changing a user account in Preferences. Ttry this link:

  • What will happen if I change the name of my Apple Id?

I have only one Apple Id, which is my email address "[email protected]". My Apple Id and primary email are the same. I now have a new email address, and want to change my Apple Id to my new email address. I've been to the Apple Id support page, and have found out how to change the Apple Id on the Apple Id support webpage. I've been reluctant to go through with the process, because I'm unsure as to what the consequences will be if I change my Apple Id. I have an iPhone and an iPad as well as two Macs and an Apple TV hooked up to my Apple Id. My iMac is the main computer used for storing all files and syncing my iOS devices. In addition my contacts and calendar is in the iCloud. I hope someone with the know-how or experience can help me answer the following questions:
    1. iPhone and iPad: Once I change my Apple Id, have I understood it correctly when the next thing I do is that I go to General settings -> Store, and sign out from my "old" Apple Id, and then sign in with the new name for my Apple Id? Will my previous purchases of music, ibooks and apps be connected to the new name of my Apple Id, and will I still be able to get previously purchased apps updated? As for iCloud, what must I do on my iPhone and iPad to make sure that contacts and calendars keep in sync?
    2. iCloud: Will changing the name of the Apple Id on the Apple Id support webpage be the only thing I need to do, or are there more steps to follow?
    3. iMac and MacBook Pro: Am I right in assuming that all I need to do is sign out from the old named account and then sign in with the new name in AppStore, iTunes, FaceTime and Messages app? Is the Apple Id in use by any other apps or functions?
    4. Apple TV: Once my iMac is up and running with the new name of the account, I sign out from the old named account, then sign in with the new name, will streaming music and photos etc. work just as before the name change?
    5. I still haven't activated Mail in iCloud. As I understand, once you do that you will be prompted to register a @me.com or @icloud.com email address. Will this address now be possible to use instead of my new email address as the name for my Apple Id?
A lot of questions, still I'd be grateful for some answers.

    Hi, everyone,
I just began to use TM to back up my mac. I already have a full backup. Now I want to exclude some folder from backup. I can do this in the option dialog of TM. But I wonder what will happen after I add a new exclude folder. Will TM begin to build a new full backup or just continue to back up incrementally from the older full copy? Thanks.
Time Machine will continue to do incremental backups.
It won't immediately delete previous backups of the items you exclude (but it will, eventually). You can do that yourself, if you want, per #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
