Change to ox snow

What is "ox snow"?
Are you perhaps referring to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard ?
What are you trying to do?

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • The MESS of Snow Leopard Printing

To say that Apple is Frustrating me with Printing in Snow Leopard is an understatement!
Snow Leopard 10.6 worked, Snow Leopard 10.6.1 Worked. Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and the 3 subsequent HP Printer Drivers has so seriously screwed up my system and I don't have a clue what to do to get it working again? Well perhaps I should do the same thing I had to do for the years that I was using Microsoft Operating Systems. Format the hard disk and reinstall everything fresh!
I have a HP LaserJet P2055dn that worked flawlessly before all these changes. Now Snow Leopard hardly recognizes the printer and all the money that I spent on the printer including the built in DUPLEXER and the additional 256MB memory are GONE!
Hewlett Packard doesn't even provide any print drivers for Snow Leopard. They say that Apple has everything I need to print!!!!!!!!!!
Then I connected via VPN to work once, have NEVER EVER added a printer from Work on the Mac Pro at home.
How the HECK did 11 Bonjour printers get added, and more importantly, what steps do I need to take to remove the NON-EXISTANT bonjour printers and ENSURE that they NEVER show up again?
What steps do I need to take to get my HP LaserJet P2055dn to show properly, show the right amount of memory, show that it has a duplexer and to show the right model number?

Yes, they do. Check http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669. There are updated drivers for this printer available through Software Update or by downloading from Apple or HP.

Are they added in Print & Fax Prefs? If so, you can delete them there.

If you don't have the most recent driver, updating to that would be a good start. I am not sure what to suggest about memory configuration and duplexing since these options don't show up in the installable options panel when choosing the driver, but asking HP might help.

  • Front Row behaviour changed

    Hi.
I am using my mac mini as a media station and to watch TV a lot. To bring Front Row and eyetv together, I used this tip of elgato: http://forums.elgato.com/viewtopic.php?f=96&t=1360
Despite the performance issues of Front Row (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/09/01/front-row-performance-takes-a-dive-with-newest-ki tty/) the configuration of Front Row changed after the Snow Leopard Update.
It is not possible to access Front Row with a long press of the menu button from eyetv anymore. Does anybody know how to get back the default behaviour of the eyetv tip?

    Hey,
as someone earlier said it seems to be an issue with the screen saver.
However i didn´t have to turn mine off alltogether. If you go to the settings pane in Front Row and turn the screen saver off it is just inactive when Front Row is enabled. Why would you want a screen saver then anyways?
This fixed the problem for me.

  • Display changes to snowstorm!

I'm using my new MacMini with my BenQ 201W monitor. The Mini and the display are connected with a DVI-type cable. The display seems to work fine when I start up. During my work breaks I often turn off the monitor to save power. When I try to turn it back on, I get something that looks like a snowstorm -- a little like the image analog televisions show when they are not receiving a signal. If I then turn the monitor off again, and then on again, sometimes several times, the display works normally again.
Any ideas as to what might be causing this problem, and how to solve it?

I have the same issue that tokyomarks (hey, that's my home town) describes.
my early 09 mini is connected to a Sony 40S3000 HDTV (HDCP compliant). It is connected to the TV using the mini DVI adapter that was supplied, then a DVI to HDMI cable.
While watching a video through Frontrow, sometimes the screen abruptly changes to a "snow storm." Turning the TV off and then back on fixes the problem every time. The issue is intermittent.
Is this because DVI is unable to carry a HDCP compliant signal? Has anyone found a solution to this? Do such things as mini display port to HDMI adapter/cable exist? If so, do you think that'll solve the issue?

  • Make dual boot Lion and Snow Leopard Mac ???

I have a SSD for my MBP. I formatted it with two partitions and installed snow leopard on each. I also have a 400 GB HDD that has snow leopard on it. I'd like to trade out my optical drive for the SSD. I'd like to update one SSD partition to Lion, then use the software and data files from the HDD for both snow leopard and Lion. That way I hope to still use the snow leopard software that is not compatible with Lion (I still have some legacy PPC programs) and have the benefit of new Lion only software.
Can I do this? If so what do I have to do? Any resources with HOW-TO for this sort of thing??
    2009 MBP with 10.6.8

Do you have any tips for making your home folder stay on the HDD and still get the files I need on each SDD partition?
I assume you are talking about application-specific data like preferences.  Most stuff is kept in your home dir.  You really have to know which apps are exceptions that put stuff in /Library and other boot disk related places (e.g., kexts).  I always keep careful records of what goes where from anything I add to my system so I know how to handle this.  Generally though I suppose Migration Assistant helps most users (I never used it).
One scheme you might do is simply ignore the problems until they occur on a app-by-app-basis.  If you run from one of the boots and something you use needs a kext or registration because its not on your common home dir, then install as needed or reregister as needed.  Preferences can easily be respecified (or dragged from a backup if you know what to look for and where).
Most of your stuff in your home dir will run as it did before if the stuff doesn't use any boot directories.  But as I said in my first post there is that risk that some apple-specific data bases might have changed going from Snow Leopard to Lion like those Mail and Address Book examples.  No way of know that until you try.  Hence the emphasis on backups.
If there are some user-specific data that has changed between Snow Leopard and Lion (say, it's Mail or Address Book) then this whole common-home-for-both-snow-leopard-and-lion scheme needs to be rethought.   As I said earlier, it has always worked within a single OS family and I don't recall even having any problems up to Snow Leopard.  But the jury is still out on Snow Leopard to Lion.
With respect to applications you want to put on the SSD, that's your choice.  What do you use the most and launch most often?  Put them on your SSD if you wish.    Thinking out loud -- maybe consider a relatively small third partition for these apps on the SSD.  It would appear as just another mounted volume on your desktop and then you would have only a single instance of those apps for both boots.  Most apps don't need to be in /Applications.  Those that do of course would have to have two instances, one for each boot.

  • IChat 5.0 - iChat connections got worse since upgrade to Snow Leopard.

Hi. Me and my significant other chat on a dayli basis, so "Improved" video and audio in Snow Leopard (iChat 5.0) seemed like a golden "Must buy". Since I installed it, she has reported issues with my audio and video. She says it lags to the point where she isn't hearing hear a single word (50% of the time). And the video jumps in quallity every 10 seconds, with bit mistakes. Only good thing was that for the first time... Screen Sharing worked!
Now I expected that changed codecs in Snow could mean that if she upgraded, aswell, it would work, but no. Now her video seems to have downgraded in quallity, but I still hear her (Apart from horrible volume jumps)
We've tried the following: Switching to google servers, to realize they didn't support Video. Trying SSL port 443. Turning off and on the feature that let's AOL relay chats, no luck anywhere.
I have an idea why this is... In Leopard, a router with NAT Type 3 on my end, meant that nothing worked. A connection with NAT Type 2 on my end (I use that the most) meant that video and audio worked, but not screen sharing.
I don't know what her NAT type is, but at home, (For her) these problems started, but anywhere else... No problems, at all, no matter where I am!
These clues don't add up for me, and I would love a solution, since Long-Distance relationships are a pain, when I only see her once a month...
Thanks for reading, hoping for support =) (And yes, I am willing to do anything to my router setting, and tell her what to do)

    Hi Defcom,
Running /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7 in Terminal shows me that iChat "Sees" the whole of my internet Connection speed.
This will raise the issue of faster and slower Buddies and the iChat Buffering again.
Video Buffering means that Audio can not be matched and if the difference is significant then the Audio will get dropped.
It may be that both ends have to try different iChat Bandwidth settings to get to the point where the video and audio are in sync.
I would also say that I had to start at 500kbps between my G4 and MacBook Pro (Set at the MacBook Pro end on Snow Leopard) but that it does seem to have "Learned" what it can use.

Clear the graphics context and repaint when you change any color or the position of anything on the screen.
You're seeing the effects of a thread doing automatic repaint commands.

  • Cannot print via AirPort since installing Snow Leopard

I can print if I plug the computer directly into the printer but that's a huge pain. Does anyone know where the problem might be coming from: the computer, the operating system, Aiport, or the print driver?
    • MacBook Pro (Intel) > Airport Express (6.3) > HP LaserJet 1012

Looking at the treads in the printing section, it sounds like having older Airport Express base station means that I just have to wait until Apple upgrades the firmware (or changes something in Snow Leopard) to make wireless printing work. My current base station won't allow me to upgrade to firmware version 7.4.2. Grr.

    Hi,
I am wondering how to change the Mac OSX 10.5 from 32bit to 64bit ??
I can change 10.6 Snow Leopard to 64bit by using the following command but it doesn't recognize by 10.5.
    sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64

  • Will Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade mess up my SSH / VNC setup?

I have an SSH server and Vine server set up on Leopard with public key file in .ssh directory and appropriate settings in the /etc/sshd_config file. Will upgrading to Snow Leopard overwrite this requiring me to set it all up again? And how about the SSH Key Fingerprint - will this be changed by the Snow Leopard upgrade?

    >will this do anything to Office 2011, in terms of my ability to access it?
It shouldn't but it can't hurt to be careful:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
    >I have all of my important materials saved onto Dropbox
The big question is, where is the physical location of DropBox.  If it is on the same machine it is not a backup.  A backup is a separately stored location.
Time Machine shouldn't search for a wireless device unless you set it up with a Time Capsule, or connected the drive to an Airport base station which was using drive sharing at the time that Time Capsule was connected.  Time Capsules, are special wireless (WiFi, Airport) routers that include hard drives.  See my link on my user tip above (2455) which includes information about backing up.  Time Machine backups to external hard drives are back ups that are most usable if they are backups from older Macs or the same aged Macs as the ones they are being restored to.    The only problem is if the old Mac was pre-2006 in age.  Then you may need to cherry pick data out of the Time Machine backup to an Intel Mac.  Also older applications may not transfer if the were initally designed to work on pre-2006 Macs.

  • View Menu in Leopard and Snow Leopard

I've had many Macs but I'm new to the Leopard and Snow Leopard OS. I asumed in the past that if a folder was set to view files as icons or as text, the setting would remain that way unless changed.
Using Snow Leopard in a 17" MacBook Pro, I have my HD set to view folders and fies as icons. I find, however, that if I set another folder to view icons as files and close my HD when I am finished with the folder, when I open the HD again, my icons are no longer there and all the folders and files are displayed as text.
Is there any way I can keep my HD set to folder display?

Very simple. Go to View/Show View Options and check the appropriate box.

  • My Macbook Pro (15" early 2011) got blue screen every i normally booted it. It only can enter the OS when it's in safe boot. Solution please.

My Macbook Pro (15" early 2011, Mountain Lion, but after reinstall i change it to snow leo) got blue screen every i normally booted it. It enter the OS only when it's in safe boot.
I've tried any solution that i got from the internet, such as:
-Reinstalling the OS X (normal install & clean install)
    -Reset PRAM and SMC
-Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk from Disk Utility (the result is OK. There's no problem)
-Repair Disk Permissions manually (with Command + S at the beginning of booting)
-Checking Hardware from Application Installer DVD (result is OK)
-Checking from Mac Resource Inspector/MRI (result OK)
-Booting from Recovery Disk is same problem, blue screen
All of that solution is not working. My Macbook still got light blue screen and sometimes blue screen with lines after apple logo and spinning wheel is shown.
HDD is in good condition because when it's checked on the other macbook it can be booted. But if you must know, other HDD can't be booted when its plugged to my macbook (blue screen again). If i do safe booting, it works but can't play video and music also photobooth. I got confused with this case.
Any solution or comment? Thank you very much by the way

Hi. I'm not trying to rush things, you may have a different problem, but your issue looks quite familiar to me. I recently had a problem with the discrete graphics card (the Radeon GPU) due to overheating, all because a faulty application of the thermal compound in the factory.
In my case, the problem started slowly and intermittently, a few days after a gaming session (Quake 3) of about three hours (at the moment, I didn't realized that could be linked to the problem).
This issue is being actively discussed in another threads in this forum, but so far there's enough evidence that it's been causing similar problems for 2011 MBPs owners: screen corruption, black/blue screens, and in some cases, a total inability to boot. Some of the threads I'm talking about:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13150366#13150366
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21110132#21110132
So far, and since the problem seems to affect only the discrete GPU (that's why you can boot in safe mode) a possible solution is to disable it by removing some extensions which prevent OS X from loading the Radeon drivers. This post describing the process (there are different files involved depending of your GPU version, so make sure you are moving the right ones):
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22521574#22521574
In the case your discrete GPU survived and is not permanently damaged, I personally had success by changing the thermal compound myself, which completely fixed the problem (at least for now). I've posted about it here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22630561#22630561
I hope you can find a solution, believe me I know the feeling when you see your expensive machine turning into a brick and it *****.
    Good luck!

  • Restoring and backing up again to Time Machine

    Hi Apple Community,
I recently had to replace the hard drive on my iMac. After the repair, I connected my Mac to my Time Capsule backup and did a complete resotre of my hard drive (approximatley 500 GB). The whole process took about 8 hours but when I was done I had successfully transfered over all my files, applications, preferences, and settings and was satisfied. However, when I attempted tp perform my next Time Machine backup, my computer began a new initial backup of my entire 500 GB of data. I couldn't understand why I would need to do a complete, fresh backup when I had just finished a complete restore. I called Apple and spoke to a Time Machine/Time Capsule Specialist who agreed that my computer was acting strangely and transferred me to an Apple Senior Advisor who would "have access to better tools for resolving my issue." The Senior Advisor told me that my Time Machine was actually behaving properly since backups are associated with unique hard drive adresses not content/settings, so a new hard drive will always require a new full backup. I was extremely frustrated with this response and felt like I recieved the infamous "it's not a bug; it's a feature" excuse.
Does anyone know if the Senior Advisor is correct? If so, it seams like a major flaw with the Time Machine software and means I have to spend another 8 hours backing up my system. Additionaly, the Advisor mentioned that the new backup will create a new sparsbundle file (though I can't currently see it since the backup is still in progress) meaning I will have to delete my legacy backups to save space. If the Advisor was wrong does anyone know of a workaround?
I've actually done several Time Machine Restores before including from an old MacBook Pro to a new one which would cause a similar situation. I can't remember ever having to do a complete fresh backup, but I may have simply forgotten. What I can't understand (but forgot to mention to the Apple Advisor) is that my Time Machine System Preferences show the previous dates for the "Oldest" and "Latest" backups. If Time Machine were truly tied to my hard drive why would System Preferences believe my iMac had already backed up?
Thanks in advance for any help or assitance,
    Jonathan

That's correct, but incomplete.  The full restore (and Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant) were changed effective with Snow Leopard to leave a "trail" in the SystemMigration.log so Time Machine could figure out what happened, and "associate" the new drive with the old backups, and only do an incremental backup.
That often didn't work in Snow Leopard, unfortunately, and was improved in Lion, where it seems to work much more often, but (obviously) not always.
Also effective with Lion is a new UNIX command that allows you to do this manually, but unfortunately it doesn't work if your backups are on a network, for some reason.
What I can't understand (but forgot to mention to the Apple Advisor) is that my Time Machine System Preferences show the previous dates for the "Oldest" and "Latest" backups. If Time Machine were truly tied to my hard drive why would System Preferences believe my iMac had already backed up?
It's not your Mac, but your internal HD that appears to be new.  If you restart the backup, once it finishes, you'll still have the old backups, but as if they were on a HD that's no longer connected to your Mac.  You'll need the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see or restore from them.
