Does anyone know how to change the workgroup name on the e4200 router using Smart Wi-Fi?
I want it to match my PC so I can access my Network shares on my WDTV.

Cool thanks for the feedback.
I've managed to sort my issue now. I was having trouble with the WDTV picking up my Network shares and read it was something to do with the workgroup name. It turns out that my partners laptop was taking over as the master browser. So I disabled this and made my main PC as the master. I could then access the network shares.
This was done by first going into the laptop and
- Start the registry editor (Start --> Run --> regedit.exe)
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser \Parameters
- Double click on MaintainServerList
- Set to NO
- Click OK
- Close the registry editor and reboot laptop
Next I went to my main PC and
- Start the registry editor (Start --> Run --> regedit.exe)
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser \Parameters
- Double click on MaintainServerList
- Set to YES
- Click OK
- Close the registry editor and reboot PC

A workgroup is not only a name, it is a peer-to-peer network
and all members must hold information about one another.

All Workgoup information is stored in the local SAM-database.
You can not snapshot that.
AFAIK you can only change Workgroup manually.

Has anybody found out how to change the workgroup name in 10.5?

I have been trying to connect to XP machine shared folders and it is not working.
I've tried using smb and it gives connection error or says Ithe user has not permission in the machine
I've started in 10.4 from backup disk and it is working OK.
I see that in 10.4 it asked for DOMAIN/ Workgroup name , and this option has disappeared in 10.5
Has anybody found out how to change the workgroup name in 10.5?

Cannot change short name of computer in Workgroup Manager

When a computer is bound to Open Directory on the client side I cannot change the short name of the computer. If the computer is added through Workgroup Manager I do not have this problem. When I try to change the name it reverts back to the old name and sometimes adds a .local at the end of it, but the new name I choose is displayed on the left side. When I log out and log back in the name on the left side reverts back to the old name.
Could it be the way I am naming the computers? I am using dept-username.location as a way to name all computers. Why does this problem only occur on computers that have been bound through the LDAPv3 service on the workstation?

I can't comment for sure on this one; but my educated guess may be that you're causing problems with your DNS (or DHCP) by specifying an extra dot in the name - Although I can't say for certain as my OD doesn't run my DNS.
Try using dept-username-location.domain.local instead of dept-username.location.domain.local.
Have you checked the console output to see if any errors are being returned?

I every time i try to change the NetBios name or type in a new Network group leopard dosen't save the changes! can anyone help?

How can I change my mini workgroup name? I guess it's using a default name as 'mygroup' but I want to change it.
Also, how do I find out what is the computer name, or host name?

For host name, you can open up a terminal window and
type "hostname". In OS X, when you enable windows
sharing, it'll tell you the winderz netbios path used
to access the share in the bottom of the dialog box.
To change the workgroup name, you can edit
/etc/smb.conf once you have the Windows sharing set
the way you like.

Changing playlist names

I have another question. I noticed that in my library there is a general list of the playlist. ie. 90's music, top rated, etc. And the songs that I have are going into all the playlist. When I look on top rated I see a song and I also see it on 90's music.
I would like to organize my music by naming my playlist different name and assign songs to each.
Is there anyway I can change the name of the different playlist on my library and have it the sameway on my ipod?

The playlists you mentioned are 'smart playlists' they update automatically as you add tracks to your library. Smart playlists update based on rules in their settings.
You cannot drag and drop files to smart playlists, make a regular playlist for that.
One way of changing the name of a playlist is by right clicking on the playlist name. A menu will pop up. Pick the rename option. To edit smart playlists is done from the same menu but another option.

Lost local network computers in finder and unable to change workgroup

On my G5, iMac works fine, both OS X10.5.5. After a update from Mac, I think it was Safari, iTunes, and a Security Update, I rebooted the computer and now can no longer view local windows network computers.
I checked WINS in Network settings and my NetBIOS name is grayed out, in the workgroup box, it is empty, I click on the drop down and my workgroup name is there I select it but it is not saved. Didn't make a difference.
I was able to use Go in Finder, Connect to Server and put in "smb:// computer name or share" and connect no problem and the computer shows up in finder, but only the one I typed in.
If I click Go in Finder, Connect to Server, then choose Browse, it dumps me back to Finder Network view and of course none of the Windows shares or computers show except the one I put in with SMB://
I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions, rebooted to no avail.
Anyone have an idea what went wrong and can point me in the right directions to get the Windows Computers back in Finder?

Ok This is what I did in trying to fix my problem and it seem to work, although I have yet to turn the G5 off or reboot yet and was able to get Windows shares showing back up.
System Preferences, Network.- Location: First choose Duplicate Services of Automatic, then I renamed Automatic to my workgroup name ( although I don't think name is important).
Then chose the Advance button and under TCP/IP changed Configure IPv4 to Using DHCP with manual address. I put in a static address (192.168.1.200) that was out of the range that the router would give out (my router range for DHCP is 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.100).
Then clicked WINS and selected my workgroup name, closed the windows and saved... Worked right off the bat in finder!
Don't know the Why's or How Come's but it worked and that is all I needed! Maybe some one could explain?

How do I change my real name so that when people send me emails it they use my email address name and not my real name?

Nobody is really sending you emails to your real name and actually getting the email from them to work. Emails that are not addressed in the proper format won't send at all.
You could just be seeing a preference setting in Mail under the "View" menu for "Use Smart Addresses" that is converting email addresses in your address book to the names associated with the email address. It happens automatically. The only way to change this behavior is to either turn off the option or change the name you've associated in your Address Book with your email address so that a different name is shown in your Mail program (don't know why you'd want to do this as it's only a local setting).

What happens when you try to change the Shuffle's name from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes?

I tried to change the name of my device and now I cant sync anything and it says there is a problem with the disk and when I changed the name back it still said the same thing so I restored my ipod (not from itunes but on the ipod itsself)

And now its saying my ipod is corrupt. None of my stuff was erased from itunes it was only erased from my ipod so why am I not able to just sync everything back onto my ipod? why is it doing this now? I think this is ridiculous that just changing one name would do this much damage.

I tried to reinstall the OS, but it wants me to go online while installing and use my apple id, but this is not my iMAC, so I don't want to use my account.
