Changed a setting and iTunes crashes at startup
iTunes has been running trouble free for months on my pc running Windows 7 Pro, until today. Earlier today, I went into iTunes preferences, playback, and clicked the box to turn on volume leveling. Then, as soon as I clicked on ok, iTunes crashed, and it crashes every time within a second or two of opening. The top, center of the iTunes window reads "Determining Audio Volume" and "Analyzing 1 of 440: Hold Me Tight" The Problem Details in the "iTunes has stopped working" window are:

I don't know what to do to get iTunes to stop crashing. I have uninstalled iTunes, downloaded and installed iTunes. I've tried opening iTunes in safe mode (control and shift). I've tried opening iTunes with the Alt key pressed. I've tried moving my iTunes music folder to a different directory in order to 'hide' it from iTunes. None of these things changed the crashing.
I'm hoping someone will reply with a fix for this. Thanks.
Hello jsolo53,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Even though you have already reinstalled iTunes, I'd like you to completely uninstall the application and its supporting files by following the steps in the article below, and then do a reinstall.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

After installing Windows XP SP3, iTunes and Quicktime crash at startup
I use iTunes almost every day, and until now have had almost no problems. But as of Sunday afternoon 5/11/2008, I found iTunes crashed on startup. Soyon after, I discovered Quicktime had the same problem. For both apps, I tried rebooting, upgrading, uninstalling/reinstalling, running Norton 2008 virus scan and registry cleaner. Same problem no matter what I did.
I just noticed, though, that my Windows Update (which I have naively set to automatic) history shows that, on that same day, it automatically installed Windows XP SP3. Coincidence... hmm.
So while I patiently wait for the uninstaller to complete the removal of SP3, I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar problems.Great link, thanks for posting it. I followed the advice therein, but unfortunately it didn't help. For the record, here's what I've done recently:
0) Removed SP3.
1) Removed all of the following:
Apple Mobile Device Support
Apple Airport Express
Apple Software Update
Bonjour
Quicktime
iTunes
2) Deleted all remaining folders related to the above apps from c:\Program Files.
3) Ran Norton 360 (2008) registry cleanup.
4) Ran Norton 360 (2008) virus scan (nothing found).
5) Deleted the following folders (Angela is the user account):
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer
c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Application Data\Apple
c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Application Data\Apple Computer
c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple
c:\Documents and Settings\Angela\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer
6) Rebooted.
7) Downloaded and installed iTunes 7.6.2.
8) Rebooted (just coz I love rebooting).
9) Tried to execute iTunes, get error dialog: "QuickTime Player has encoutered a problem and needs to close."
10) Tried to execute QuickTime, get same dialog.
At this point I'm thinking I've got a bad DLL under c:\Windows... -
Deleting/moving the itunes library files (iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl) makes it work fine which leads me to believe it crashes when loading the playlist. But not always!
iTunes crashes on startup on my vista 32bit.
Even after I upgraded to 7.4.3.1 and reinstalled iTunes several times.
I've also tried reinstalling quicktime and selecting "Repair" to no avail.
Running it in XP2 compatibility mode doesn't help.
Disabling Aero doesn't help.
Whether or not my iPhone is plugged in or not seems to make no difference.
This is the error msg.

ITunes crashing on startup - on a fresh Windows2000 install
I know there are a few topics about iTunes crashing on startup already, but I really don't know what to make of this situation.
I just installed Windows 2000 on a new motherboard this morning, and iTunes and Quicktime are the only programs that won't work on it.
-iTunes actually crashed at the end of its installation, so I knew things would be bad right away.
-iTunes crashes a half-second after I try starting it.
-Quicktime opens, but crashes whenever I try to play a video.
-All my other audio and video programs work, including Media Player and Media Player Classic.
-No, I don't have a virus checker installed. The only other programs I have installed are .NET framework, DirectX 9, ffdshow, and the K-Lite Codec Pack... This is literally the exact same setup I had on the older motherboard which died and had to replace with this one.
It's almost as if it's some crazy error where these programs won't work with the new motherboard or sound card (using SiS onboard sound).
Fresh installs and seperate Quicktime installs don't seem to be working.
Basically, nothing is working.

I have to say this is quite frustrating. =/
ECS K7S5A Windows 2000Well, it's working now, and I have no idea why, unfortunately. So I'm not entirely convinced this problem won't happen again.
I did go and find one peculiarity in that my Date and Time was set to May 2086. Uhhh... Im using the computer with a rather old and blurry TV monitor and 8s look like 0s. I know sometimes things like this will affect programs, though I do remember being able to run iTunes while having my time off before.
Still, that's the only thing I changed before it started working again. Does anyone know if such an issue has come up before?

How do you change the setting in iTunes for the time-space between songs in your playlist?
I need help changing my setting in iTunes, the time-space between songs. In setting up iTunes I selected the "three-second" and now wish I'd selected "five-seconds". Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
Thank you Chris.
This was not the exact solution for my problem but by misreading your instructions I accidentally found the answer. Just as simple as you suggest. I had already ensured the Crossfade was unchecked in iTunes. What had actually changed with the last software update was the settings on my ipod. I can't believe I never checked this before.
The solution:
ipod settings > Playback
Audio Crossfade = "Off" -
How can I use iCloud again after upgrading OS to Mountain Lion? 2 days of trying every password I have ever used, AND changing Apple ID and iTunes ID, still nothing. Can't backup on iCloud anymore.
Apple ID's can be used for anything, a single ID can be used for all your accounts (ie iCloud, iTunes, MAS, Apple community etc), ideally this would be the way forward. So far as iTunes goes you need to continue to use the same ID as you have always used or you will lose access to your previous purchases and your iTunes match subscription.
If you are using a second ID for iCloud, you can continue to do so or use the ID you use for iTunes, but if you choose the later you will need to move all your calendar, contact etc data to the account using the ID you use for iTunes.
When (if) you change which account you use you would delete the account on an iOS device and log back in with the correct details, on a mac you would sign out in the iCloud system preference pane. -
System and iTunes crash everytime I try to enable iTunes Match
Libary has 20,000 music files and about 50 movies, of which 2/3 are digital copies
Any ideas, as I would like to use iTunes Match
ThanksIn iTunes, do Store->View my AppleID
Click "Deuthorize ALL"
Then, on any computers you still have, do Store->Authorize this computer. If there are less than 5, you will have no problem.
You can only do "deauthorize all" once a year, so in the future, if you ever throw a computer away, remember do to "Store->Deauthorize this computer" first. -
I need to change my country and itunes does not allow me because I have 0.20 left to spend. I can't purchase any more credit because I'm not in the US any more and Itunes just accept those. I need help!

The Finder toolbar, by default, has Previous and Next buttons that let you navigate back and forth in folders. I somewhat change that setting and can't go back and foreward. How do I change this setting to the original one? I tried everything! Help!
Select a Finder window, Finder->View->Customize Toolbar…, and add it back.

Safari and iTunes crash on start up
Hi There,
I have a macbook pro and both safari and itunes crash on start up.
It happened after I tried to install Microsoft Silverlight - which did not work.
I have now deleted all files I can see to do with silverlight and reinstalled itunes - but still crashes on start up.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix?
PeterLaunch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -
I use iTunes for my iPhone 4 and iPad 1 . When I did the ios5 update on my iPhone iTunes reported that threvwas a problem , tgatvsone of my data did not get copied . Well none of my data got copied , ios5 got installed ok but I lost all my photos , music , books , apps. What a horrible situation. I cannot get iTunes to run . It crashes after about 45 seconds , reports that something is preventing it from running . I repaired iTunes with a fresh iTunes 10.5 file but to no avail. Oh , and iTunes installed all my apps on my iPhone . Mean apps that were for my iPad and iPod touch. It installed about 300 apps on my iPhone. This is insane . That **** IOS 5 is a ruinous upgrade. What do I do ? I can't sync my iPad any longer no iTunes. I don't know.......
The passcode is defintely doing its job, denying access to your personal info from unauthorised users. The way I look at it is if there was another way to bypass the passcode then whats the point?. You would then have a passcode just for show, that didn't protect anything. Anybody and everybody would have access to all your data.
I understand your frustration in regards to losing data, thats one of the worst things that could happen with devices now days that hold so much information. I do not believe the issue was your fault but your colleagues. In saying that it would have been wise to make frequent iTunes back ups or enable automatic iCloud back ups as that is what they are there for.
As already explained this is a user to user forum, Apple does not comment or review the information. If you believe Apple should have another way to protect their devices or another way around this issue then please provide them with feedback here:

Help! Safari and iTunes crash on Snow Leopard
Just installed Safari 5.1.5, Apple Software Installer Update 1.0, and iTunes 10.6.1 through software update, and now I can't launch Safari (it crashes, see below) and iTunes (which just disappears). I ran permissions repairs in Disk Utility, but that did not help, and it keeps bringing up the same set of issues over and over without actually repairing them (log below). now I can't launch Safari (it crashes, see below) and iTunes (which just disappears).
How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Repairing permissions is one thing but you need to verify the startup disk for errors as well.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab..
Click Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs reparing follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks -
ITunes crash on startup/iPhone sync (Lion & iTunes 10.6)
Hi all,
All of the sudden I have a problem where itunes started crashing a few moments after startup. I reinstalled iTunes with no change. Then I rebuilt my iTunes library, following which it does not crash on startup. However, now it crashes when I plug in my iPhone 4, also running the latest (5.0.1). This is a problem since I sync two iPhones and an iPad to this account on my Mac. I had been syncing wirelessly (with iCloud backup) but none of the devices appear in iTunes (I assume that's because of the Library rebuild). Now that I write this, I think maybe it had to do with connecting to the iPhones/iPad all along and rebuilding the Library prevents the autoconnect of the wireless devices since they no longer recognize my new Library.
Any suggestions on how to fix without completely wiping out my Mac?Try here > iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X

Hello,
Got a major issue here.
Suddenly my iTunes crashes everytime at startup.
First my specs and versions;
iMac 27" 2.66 Ghz Intel Corei5 with 8 GB DDR3
Version 10.8 Mountain Lion
iTunes version 10.6.3
iPhone 4 16 GB version 5.1.1
iPad 3 32 GB version 5.1.1 wifi only
This morning I planned cleaning up my iTunes Library. Get rid of songs I don't really like. And download some movies to my iPad to see when we are on holiday.
I was working for about 1/2 an hour then suddenly the rainbow ball appears and I can't click on anything in iTunes. The song plays on.
I forced iTunes to stop and restarted iTunes. This I did several times.
I've noticed that iTunes tried to connect to my iPhone and iPad but before it connects iTunes freezes.
I've searched the forum and found a solution given by James Mcdermotte1 here on the Apple forum. Open iPhoto and create a new library. Restart iTunes and it would be fixed.
This didn't work for me.
Then I disconnected both iPhone and iPad from wifi, so itunes didn't had to connect.
Didin't work eather.
I'm out of thoughts here, can anyone help me out. Quickly if possible as I'm leaving very soon on holiday.
Is the crash related to Mountain Lion???
Tx,
DannyAnother partial solution:
Open up iTunes in safe mode (press command and option when clicking on iTunes). This will disable any third-party visualization plugins you've installed. Even while connected to the internet, I don't get the usual hangup I was getting before.
Supposedly safe mode only disables the third party plugins. I only found one plugin (Quartz Composer Visualizer), and I don't think it is third party. I removed it from my plugins folder and restarted in regular mode... still got the crash (then I promptly movd the plugin back to the proper directory).
It's not an ideal solution, but starting up in this safe mode seems to solve the problem, and I haven't lost any functionality. Internet services like the iTunes store and iTunes match seem to work fine, too. I'd like to know what exactly it is that safe mode is doing to make this possible as well as why disconnecting from the internet helped, but I won't argue with success. Please post if you are still having problems so we can pinpoint the source. -
I have a 2009 8-core Mac Pro (2.26Ghz) with a GT120 graphics card. I use Final Cut Studio 3 frequently, and up until recently without any hitches. Last week, Color started previewing clips as black with touches of red (I'm assuming a readout of the clips colour data in some form) and therefore I can't grade any clips as I can't preview them. On top of that, two days later Motion started crashing on startup. Seeing as both programs rely heavily on the graphics card all I can deduce is that something's wrong with my card and it needs changing. Anyone else had any of these problems and come to a solution?
Is there an add-in video card in the slot? If so, remove it and try to turn on. If the problem is the video card it will turn on. If not it is the power supply.
