Changed backup drive - Deleting old taking forever!

I probably made a mistake in throwing all the Time Machine backups from an external drive into the trash to delete it all, I got an error. So next, I moved the items from the trash to a folder on the desktop and after 10 hours it is still getting ready to move items and is up to over twenty million items!
Reason I am trying to delete is I got a new Mac and much larger HD so moved backup to a new larger external HD. The old abandoned Time Machine backups are no longer needed and I wanted to clear the disk space.
Is it normal to take 'Days' to delete the items from an old Time Machine backup?
TIA,
Ken

Indeed. Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks: +*Never, ever, change, move, or delete anything in your backups via the Finder or Terminal.+* That can corrupt them, not to mention cause the kinds of problems you're seeing.

Also a mistake. Cancel it.

How did you do that, and are you sure the copied backups are ok?

That way, yes. Once you're sure you don't need them, just erase the disk. It will take a few seconds at most. If you're not sure how, see #1 or #2 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).

  • Does Choose Backup Disk to change backup drives copy the old backup?

I am about to install 10.5. I plan to use TM with my FW800 LaCie 500GB drive until I get a RAID. I see that one can change backup disks with System Preferences > Time Machine > Choose Backup Disk. When you do this does the entire backup get copied from the old disk to the new one? If so, great. I can format the LaCie drive and redeploy it.

When you attach and choose a new drive for backing up, TM will begin a new full backup. It does not copy from one backup drive to another. But once that backup is done, you'll have two drives that can be used by TM (not at the same time). If you don't want one of them, you can erase it. However, as you probably suspect, the new backup will not have the history of old backups that the old drive has.
If you search around the forum, you might find one or more old posts that talk about performing a copy from one backup drive to another, using CCC or SuperDuper, I think. So what I think you want to do is probably do-able. Just look for those posts, you'll get the details.

  • Okay so I just got a new MacBook and I'm setting it up. I decided to not download all of my files to iCloud drive and its taking forever to load to the next page. Is this normal for it to take so long? After all I didn't even download my stuff?

why is it taking forever to load!?

The files you are loading into the new computer are by wi-fi? If you have no other option
that may be OK but slow. A faster method would be Ethernet cable from internet router
or modem, instead of wireless. Most of the setup process can take some time.
What are these files? Where are they now?
Do you have a backup on-site, & not online?
Did you check to see if the operating system was updated as part of the setup before use?
The Software Update can locate later parts to the as-shipped system, that may be needed.
Other upgrades or new apps are through the Mac App Store, some through App Store, etc.
As part of the setup, you could use a migration assistant if you have a backup from the old
computer or have other files saved in an external hard drive to import.
Hopefully your process won't be drawn out too long...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Does Time Machine replace changed files and delete old files?

I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet, but my son is a NEW CONVERT to the Mac; has uses Dells for years. He has a new Macbook Pro with Leopard. I use SuperDuper! with my Tiger Mini Mac.
I don't understand what Time Machine does. Does it continually update files on the target device, and if so how does it handle deleted and renamed files on the source device.
    Thanks.

Time Machine takes a snapshot of the drive it is backing up every hour. If a file is new, renamed or modified since its last backup, Time Machine will make a physical copy of that file. To conserve drive space Time Machine will only make hard links back to its previously backed up files for files that exist on its source drive which remain unchanged. Hard links work in a somewhat similar fashion as aliases. If a file has been deleted Time Machine won't make a copy or hard link. You can read about how hard links work in Time Machine in this Ars Technica review.
    http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/14
If a file is not on the hard drive for over an hour and is deleted before Time Machine makes its hourly backup that file will not be in any of Time Machine's backups.
Time Machine only retains the first hourly backup of the day as its daily backup. The other hourly backups get deleted in the course of the day. That means that to be retained in the daily backups a file must be on the hard drive for over a day or be physically present on the source drive for the first backup of the day.
After a month, Time Machine retains the daily backup made on the same day of the week as the initial backup as its weekly backup. If a file is on the source drive for less than a week and is not in the daily backup retained as the weekly it will end up being deleted when Time Machine thins its daily backups.
When the Time Machine volume fills up, Time Machine will start deleting its earliest backups to make room for new ones.

  • Change TM drive ---deleteing TM files

I've got TM up and running smoothly, with several backups on my external drive.
    1) Can I now copy my TM data to another (larger) drive (via a simple drag and drop in Finder), then change my destination drive in TM and have it continue to update that same data?
    2) Say TM ran when I had a bunch of large temporary files on my computer, then, knowing I no longer need them, deleted them. Can I delete them from the TM backup on the external drive to free up space?

    1) Can I now copy my TM data to another (larger) drive (via a simple drag and drop in Finder), then
change my destination drive in TM and have it continue to update that same data?
I would not advise using the Finder's drag and drop copy for this. I would recommend you use SuperDuper! (SD!) or Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC).
The SD! is not yet compatible with Leopard GM build 9A581 whereas CCC is. I tested CCC for doing this type copy and it worked without any problems and TM recognised it as a bone fide TM backup volume.
    2) Say TM ran when I had a bunch of large temporary files on my computer, then, knowing I no
longer need them, deleted them. Can I delete them from the TM backup on the external drive
    to free up space?
Yes you can. When in the TM browser simply highlight the temp files then click on the Finder's Action icon (has cog wheel in it) and select the "Delete all Backups of "temp-filename". See URL http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2655/leopardtime_machine_delete_files_folders_frombackup

  • Changed feed and deleted old account.  iTunes Store still showing deleted content?

I was a former use of Podomatic and published my RSS feed to iTunes in order to publish my podcasts.  I am now publishing to iTunes direct from my webserver via software "Feed For All" that I purchased.  iTunes approved the changed URL RSS feed and it's working fine in the iTunes store.  All that is available via the Feed for All URL is being published by iTunes, so that's not the problem.  The problem lays in that I deleted my Podomatic account approximately 7 days ago, and iTunes Store still shows the Podomatic content ... i.e., unplayable and not working podcasts as well as the avatar from my Podomatic account.
How long does it take for iTunes to strip out the old Podomatic stuff?
    Thank you.

My Mail has been rendered useless since Mavericks upgrade.  I have installed the initial patch and the most recent Mavericks update.  Same problem persists...

I love Mail - but it is useless now.  Frustrating.
Most of my mail accounts are Gmail.

I cannot cope with this any longer, I am using a MacBook Pro and the machine is unusable since upgrading to Mavericks. Mail is churning constantly and I cannot do anything else with the machine. Can anyone suggest a new email programme or either on Mac or PC? I am sorry Apple but you have failed me for the final time with this upgrade.

  • How to delete old emails forever?

I'm using a windows live mail on my iPad. I try to delete all the old emails, but sometimes especially after updates they come back. It's really annoying. Is there any way to fix this?

You will need to go to the "Windows Live Mail" web site.  There is a way from this web site, to delete all emails that are on the server, or to tell it to delete emails that are older than a specificed time.

  • Deleting "trash" taking FOREVER!

I recently purchased a Mac Mini and I LOVE it, with the exception that when I delete the trash, it takes a LONG time! I deleted around 60GBs worth and it took over 14 hours. Is that normal? On my Powerbook G4, it would delete the very same amount in under a minute? Is this a setting problem? Thanks.

    Hi,
    " Is this a setting problem? "
It could well be! There are 2 options for emptying the trash...
    Empty Trash - Done quickly.
Secure Empty Trash - Done slowly, as this option writes 0's over that part of the hard drive where the information is located. Try this first...
Click on ' finder ' in the top most menu on your Mac there. Then click on ' preferences '. Then click ' advanced '
There you should find an option to empty trash " securely " - Make sure that this option is de-selected. The trash can should now be emptied muck quicker. Is it? I hope so.
    Regards.

  • Incremental Backups in Time Machine taking forever

    Greetings all,
I have read the various posts about slow initial backups with Time Machine. I, on the other hand, had no such problem. However, now that my initial backup is complete I find it takes quite a long time for Time Machine to do its hourly thing. I mean a LONG time. The machine will sit for minutes at a time doing nothing, then copy a few kilobytes of a reported 239 MB backup. Then when it finally does complete - roughly 30 minutes later - it will sit for 10 or 15 minutes at the "Finishing backup" stage. At this rate Time Machine is running almost constantly - by the time the darnned thing finishes it's almost time to start again. It didn't do this on my G5 quad core with the same amount of data (about 850 GB). Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?
    Thanks for your help.

    Your Majesty!!
Sounds like your incremental backups are quite fast!
I have a mid 2011 iMac with SSD and 2TB HDD, and Time Machine incremental backups take anything up to 5 hours, sometimes longer.  Trivial amounts of data are usually involved, but the log reports very large numbers of files.
One time I completed a Time Machine backup, rebooted and initiated another backup immediately with very few apps running (Console, Activity Monitor), and after several hours, the backup log said it had backed up over 800,000 files but only a very small amount of data.
I have a case open with AppleCare since July 1st.  They have a whole lot of logs and other information being analyzed.
You will find others who have the same unresolved problem at - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3144862?start=0&tstart=0

  • Time machine not deleting old backups of recovery partition

I have a Mac Mini running Lion Server. I have an external disk partitioned with a space for network backups and a smaller partition for backing up the server itself. The server has a 160GB disk, it is only using 29.27GB, the partition for backing up the server is 152GB (it's what was left over after creating the partition for the network backups). I figured since I'm only using about 30GB, 152GB should be plenty of space. However after 3 months of use I get the error "the backup is too large for the backup disk". In the past I have formatted the partition and restarted the backups, however it always fills up after 3 months. This time I decided to dig into it a bit more. I looked to see what was available in my backup, it only has one previous restore point. I browsed the disk and opened the backups.backupdb folder, checked the size of the folder with the computer name, it is only 9.44GB. I was wondering where all of the space went so I enabled hidden files, I found the .RecoverySets folder and found it was taking up 141.95GB. I looked at the recovery sets, there are 295 copies of com.apple.recovery.boot which all seem to contain the following files:
    .disk_label                         749b
    BaseSystem.chunklist       2KB
    BaseSystem.dmg              454.6MB
    boot.efi                              864KB
    com.apple.Boot.plist          431b
    kernelcache                       24.1MB
    PlatformSupport.plist         2KB
    SystemVersion.plist           478b
Of those files, the only file not dated Aug 11, Oct 6 or 12, 2011 is com.apple.Boot.plist which has a date that corresponds to when the backup was performed. These backups go all the way back to Jan 30, the last time I formatted the partition, but the user data backups only go back to the 27th and it hasn't been able to complete a backup since.
I thought Time Machine was supposed to only backup data that had changed since the last backup, and delete old revisions when space is running low, it seems that it is copying more than just the data that changed since the last backup and only deleting old revisions of user data, not system data. Is there a way to fix this permanently?

See C18 in the first linked article. Also, your backup drive should be 2-4 times your hard drive capacity.

  • Printers keep showing up even when name has been changed in or deleted

Running 10.5.8 on our xserve.  Earlier another and myself went in and changed printer names, deleted old ones.  Problem is this.  Our school recently bought new laptops for our teachers, running 10.8.  We used migration asst. to bring their items and profiles over to the new machines.  As teachers are getting back, they can not print.  The printers showing up are the old names, along with the new ones and the drivers that were installed are not there.  Wondering how to get rid of the printers that have been deleted from showing up in the Printer list.  I was thinking it had something to do with the old profiles sharing all the printer lists accross the network.

The Migration Assistant (or something else) obviously found the old printer definitions... Somewhere.  AFAIK, there's no sharing of any of these printer settings across the network, barring continued visibility of the old printer names via printer Bonjour announcements or some such, or getting the printer settings loaded into the clients via LDAP.
One usual approach for managing larger numbers of client boxes involves tools such as Munki and Puppet, or equivalent.  Munki generally for the package-handling and installation stuff, and Puppet for the configuration management and issuing commands.
Various commercial MDM software packages are also used.
With OS X and OS X Server 10.8, a printer profile would be another common approach, though your 10.5.8 server well predates any profile support.  (The MDM packages also usually tie directly into the profile management, as can Puppet.

  • Time machine deletes old backups with new system drive

So I decided it was time to get a larger system drive. After I finished migrating to the new drive, I plugged in my Time Machine backup drive, and now it's deleting all my old backups! What gives? Shouldn't Time Machine keep doing incremental backups the way it always has? Nothing has changed except the drive -- the files are still the same. I had backups going back to 2011, so it's a bit unsettling to see this happen.

    Digijohn wrote:
So I decided it was time to get a larger system drive. After I finished migrating to the new drive,
On Snow Leopard, that's what usually happens.
On Lion and later, depending on exactly how you put your data back, it usually doesn't -- TM changes the backups so they look like they were made from the new drive. And there's a way to do that manually.
But on Snow Leopard, there's nothing you can do.  Note that you can still see and restore from the remaining old backups, via the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • How to delete backup files from old backup drive?

    Hi,
I recently changed the backup drive used by Time Machine, from /Volumes/vast4 to /Volumes/vast2 (for example). Time machine now happily backs up to vast2 and shows available backups going back to the date of the change from one drive to the other. I no longer need the old backups on /Volumes/vast4, and I do need the 2GB of space they occupy. These old backups are not visible in Time Machine - it sees only backups on the new backup volume. Completely manual deletion of /Volumes/vast4/Backups.backupdb, with rm -r in a terminal, gives "Permission denied" even when I have admin privleges. Is there a way to do this deletion from within Time Machine, or at the command line? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jason

First try to use Disk Utility to repair that disk permissions. Then you can also get info on that folder and take a look at what sharing and permissions are set there. If you don't see your name there (your user name, not the admin) then add it by clicking on the plus sign. Set the permissions to Read & Write. Now try to delete the folder.
