Changed computers and lost mail!

Hi,
I have recently updated from an Intel Imac to a Mac Pro . I used the Migration assistant app too move everything across, and mail on the Mac Pro shows that there are emails available (i.e. the red circle with the number appears on the Mail app icon) but there are no emails visible in mail.app itself.
Help!!!

Hi neals61.
What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)? If IMAP or .Mac, try disabling any custom rules you may have and rebuilding the mailbox, i.e. select it in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.

If the books were purchased at the iBookStore, you will be able to redownload, like the apps. Some other sellers, like O'Reilly, also allow multiple downloads.
If you have (or can install) iTunes on a computer (Mac preferable, not mandatory) and run it then plug the device in, does it show up? If the computer can detect it, you can and should do a complete backup onto local storage immediately. That can then be used to reconstruct the content of the device on a new or repaired replacement. If you enable encryption, even the passwords will get saved.

  • I've changed computers and lost my music?

I've changed computers and lost my music?  What to do? I signed in and a blank library came up.

Your music is where it always has been, on the other computer. Music downloads to the computer via which you purchase the track; you don't see it just because you log into the iTunes Store on another computer. If you still have access to that other computer, you can copy the iTunes library from that computer to your new one.
If, however, you don't still have access to that old computer and you are in the US, make sure you have at least iTunes 10.3.1, then go to the iTunes Store, log into your account, and click the new Purchases link under the Quick Links. The new iTunes in the Cloud service, currently in beta as part of iCloud, may allow you to re-download your purchased content (music, videos and TV shows are only available to US users at this time). You can also do this from an iOS device.
    For more information, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If you are outside the US, then you normally get only one download per purchase. If you don't have access to the old computer, or have a backup or have the tracks on a iPod or other iOS device, then you'll have to contact the iTunes Store, request a second download, and hope they'll make an exception for you:

  • I changed computers and lost all mu itunes music

I recently bought a new computer and cannot find my itunes music and movies. Is this because of the new computer or something else? Thanks

Don't confuse what's on your computer and what's stored by the iTunes Store.  The iTunes Store only keeps a list of what you have purchased.  Most will be available for redownload but that is not guaranteed which is why you need to not rely upon the store as a backup for your media.  The Store will not, of course, have information about media obtained from other sources such as CDs unless you also subscribe to Match.  Even then that is only for music so if you have home movies in iTunes it will only be on your computer.
None of the above includes the structure you have given it in iTunes (which is the application on your computer, not your accuont at the Store) such as ratings, playlists, playcounts.  That is only stored in the library file on your computer.  If you do not transfer that then all you have is a potentially incomplete set of media files.

  • Changed Computers and Lost songs

When I syncd my ipod to the new itunes account (upgraded to the latest version)on my new computer, it said that it found the old account with all my songs on it and asked if I wanted to replace it with the new account. I guess I didn't read it carefully enough and ended clicking 'yes' when I should have said 'no'. I'm not sure if there is anything I can do at this point to access the old account and transfer my lengthy libary collection. Please Help!

Pressing "Yes" when iTunes brings up the dialogue window asking whether you want to replace the songs on your iPod with the songs in this iTunes does exactly what it says. If you link to an iTunes with only a few or completely different songs it will erased your original iPod song list. There are some data recovery programs on the market. I've no personal experience of them so I can't say how effective they are, here's an example: iPod Data Recovery</a
None of the recovery programs are particularly cheap so you have to decide if in your particular circumstances it's worth it to get your songs back. It may be if you have a lot of purchased tracks which you will have to pay to download again. If they came primarily from your CDs then it's most likely not as you can re-rip them.

  • Changed computers and lost my library

i recently sold my computer and did not back up my library and now i cant find a way to recover al of my dowloaded music including my previous purchased music

If you did not make any backups, then the music files only exist on the original PC (if not erased by now).
Do you have an iPod that contains all/some of your music?
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1869212
If not, then you are going to be re-downloading & re-importing all your music.
For your purchased iTMS songs, a well constructed email plea to the iTMS explaining your situation and promising that you have learned the value of backups and will do so from now on, may get you a second chance at a download. They may allow a second shot at downloading them - but they may not.
Above all. After recovering your music and starting a new Library, strongly consider a thorough backup strategy:

  • How do I know if time machine is backing up my apple mail? I need to have copies of all of my emails, so there I have a lot of mail files. I was told that if I change computers, that the mail files will all be on time machine. Is this true? Thanks, Dave

Is there a way to verify  if time machine is backing up my apple mail?  I was told that if I change computers, that the mail files will all be on time machine and can be easily be put on a new computer using my time machine backups.  Is this true? Thanks, Dave

Having deleted some Mail messages by mistake, I have had to recover them from TM. I can tell you that the recovery of mail messages will be done at the mailbox level. In my case it was half of the messages in a mailbox. So I recovered the complete mailbox from TM. Then I copied the messages from the recovered mailbox back into the mailbox I use in Mail. I hope that helps.
Please be aware that TM is a backup application and not an archival application. What that means is that if your TM drive gets full, it will get rid of older files which could be mail messages to make space for newer backups. You might want to consider archiving your mail instead of using TM if you need to maintain your mail messages for extended periods of time.

  • On my windows Itunes I changed computers and ended up with two of every song. How do I delete the duplicates without doing it one at a time?

I have duplicates of all the songs on my windows 7 computer.  I changed computers and ended up with duplicates of all of my songs. How can I delete them all without having to do it one at a time? thanks!

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

I Have iTunes since 2008. I have changed computers and I know have old libraries in my Hard Disk but iTunes do not locate a lot of songs when I try to play it. How can I correct this situation?

When iTunes say that try to find the file you want iTunes to play in your iTunes > Media folder.  If iTunes offers to find others, let it. If it does not find them all you will have to find them yourself or re-add the files from your drive to iTunes (use Automatically Add to iTunes folder).
iTunes 9: Understanding the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder. - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3832 - Files put into this folder are actually moved from this folder onto the correct location in the iTunes Media folder.
