Changed folder name

My daughter changed the names of the folders in the iphoto library. Since she did this we read that she shouldn't have changed any of this. We now can't open any of the thumb nails in iphoto. Is there anyway we can correct this or are all of our pictures lost?
Gary

Try using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library. It often succeeds when the usual method fails:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it

  • Relinking changed folder name

I am in need of a script that will, when prompted to relink broken links, update the path of a changed folder name.
So no matter where the "old file name (X)" is in the link path, it will be updated to "New folder name (Y)"
Also I now very little about scripts so if anyone knows a simplified website that explains how to utilize them that would also be super helpful.
    Thanks!

Check out the Links section on this page. Probably you you will find something close to your needs.

  • Finder automatically changing folder names...

Finder is automatically changing folder names... say I have two folders side by side titled:
    Financial
    Miscellaneous
Sometimes, and for no apparent reason, the "financial" folder will, when I click on it, change to "miscellaneous" and will show the exact same files no matter which one of the two I click on. I know for a fact that each folder holds two entirely different sets of documents...
What is going on here? How do I stop it from doing this?

We are experiencing this issue on both ppc and intel machines and it appears to be isolated to the Finder as the terminal reports properly. The commonality is network shares, it does not seem to matter if they are nfs automounted from solaris, smb mounted from a linux box, etc etc, nor does it matter if an admin user manually mounts these shares, the issue persists. I, like a previous poster on this subject was skeptical given the symptoms but kept an open mind and then witnessed this anomaly for myself. We can now re-create it at will. I have narrowed it down to the 10.4.9 update and it continues through 10.4.10, in my testing, the issue does not exist in 10.4.8. The Finder version changes from 10.4.6 in OSX version 10.4.8 to Finder version 10.4.7 in OSX version 10.4.9, the Finder versions do not coincide with OS versions. Swapping in the older Finder did not solve the issue so there are other culprits involved. It may not even be the Finder at issue, the issue may reside in the way OSX mounts shares and simply manifests in the Finder. Odd behavior to say the least, one good thing is that while the data appears to have gone away, it's actually safe and sound and a reboot/logout-login resolves the issue. Deleting .DS_Store, force re-launching the Finder does not seem to help nor does deleting caches, preferences, etc, the only solution I have found is to revert to 10.4.8.

  • Changed folder name...photos are gone??  Cannot find them on HD anymore..?

I did not realize that the folder numbers in IPhoto were based on exact date to which they were taken. I renamed a folder and could no longer view the photos with IPhoto. I called Apple..they didn't really know what to do (great investment that was) and now I have completely lost all of my pictures by moving my IPhoto library and then deleating one of them because I then had two in different places on my computer. I cannot find any of the original photos at all now - even searching for every .jpg on my HD with spotlight. Is there anyway I can retrieve these pictures or am I going to have to upload all of them again from different CDs and edit all of them again??? Any kind of answer to this would be greatly appreciated as calling Apple has definitely not solved this problem. Thanks.

    renaud,
that is unfortunate, but I will leave you with info to help start again...
The first bit of info is help on importing images from folders on your hard drive in an organized way.
Importing Images from the hard drive, CD, or DVD
To import a folder with subfolders of images maintaining the same organizational structure (or close to it):
Drag the folder into iPhotos viewing area.
A film roll will be created with each sub folders name. To view the rolls in the Library you need to first go to the menu bar and choose View>by film rolls.
To make each roll into an Album, highlight the tile of the roll
Go to File>new album from selection.
You will now have an Album in the source column with the images from that roll. Do this for each roll if you want them to be an Album. This is your choice.
Next, go to the menu bar and hit File>new folder
Name this new folder with the year or whatever the name was of the Parent folder containing the subfolders that you had dragged into iPhotos viewing area.
Next drag all the Albums into the respective new Parent folder you just made.
Albums- collection of images from one roll or many rolls. The Albums will be listed in your source column when you make them. The albums only contain placeholders for the images that are still in the library. They are not duplicates.
Rolls- rolls are created when you import folder of images. It will be given the name of the folder you are importing.
Rolls are also created from each import from your camera. You are given the option to name the roll at import.
Folder-a folder you create manually using the File>new folder command
Folders can hold Albums, slideshows, books, another folder, etc.
One other way you can import a folder of images and have an Album created for it as the same time it is imported as a roll in the Library view:
Drag each folder of images into the source column of iPhoto. When you see the plus sign, drop it in the source column.
An album will be created in the source column, and the roll that the album was created from will be in the library view window.
The next info is just good things to know....
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
If you have already put files/folders in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder then you will also find out that if you try to import them into iPhoto you will get an error message. No worry, just drag them to the desktop and import from there.
--All images that you import are shown in the library view. You can choose how you want to view, by rolls, by date, by rating, etc. When you put images in an Album, slideshow, book, etc, you are actually just putting pointers to those images in the library. You are not adding more images. If you delete an image from the Album it will still be in the library. If you delete an image from the library it is deleted from iPhoto's database and your hard drive (unless you have it backed up somewhere else)
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures. (DO NOT HAVE IPHOTO DELETE THE IMAGES FROM YOUR CAMERA! DELETE THEM MANUALLY WITH THE CAMERA-if something goes wrong with the import and they are never imported and then they are deleted from the camera you might end up losing those images)
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
Don't forget that in Library view you can Control click on any picture and get a contextual menu with many options. One is to revert to original.
    Good luck!
    Lori

  • Applescript to change Folder names

Can someone suggest an Applescript that would convert the names within a given Finder folder?
    For example,
I have a folder full of photos that were relabeled and not recognized by the iPad when using the Camera Connection Kit. They need to be converted to 8 character names (no special characters). For example, I wish to change:
    20140923 (12).JPG    to     14092312.JPG
In general, change 201409wx (yz)   to    1409wxyz where wxy and z are unique numbers.

    Use the following:
    tell application "Finder"
repeat with this_file in (get files of (choose folder))
set the_name to name of this_file
set name of this_file to {get items 3 thru 8 of the_name, get items 11 thru 12 of the_name, get items 14 thru -1 of the_name} as string
    end repeat
    end tell

  • CHANGED FOLDER NAME IN FINDER- NOW IPHOTO CANT FIND FILE

I was trying to organize my iphoto files through the finder. So I renamed and grouped similar files. Now the photos cannot be found in iphoto.
How do I reset the folder settings?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The point of iPhoto is that you do all your work in the iPhoto Window. It does the work in the background.
Then if you need the files to upload somewhere or for some other reason:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • My bookmarks mysteriously change folder names and positions in the tree

Sometimes when I go to add a folder, it gets repeated in different places, or overwrites an existing bookmark folder and mysteriously changes its location. It is very frustrating to try and categorize bookmarks when there is some gremlin or evil elf that confuses things. Category folders get renamed yet have totally unrelated links within it. Why can't bookmarks work like with some semblance of dependability like Windows Explorer does? What the hell is going on with bookmarks?!??

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Connected AFP share changes folder names

    Hi,
First of all, thanks in advance for your help.
I have a 10.6.8 MacBook Pro which is connected to an AFP share on a Snow Leopard Server.
When browsing in 'Cover Flow' layout, some folders change from CAPITAL to normal fonts.
For example: To_ARCHIVE becomes To_archive.. Opening the folder results in going back to the root of the share.
What I've tried is trashing the preferences, repairing permission and using a different view. Nothing helped so far.
Using the same account on a different MacBook Pro works fine. Using a different account on the same MacBook Pro gives the same 'error'.
Someone here that experienced the same problem or has any suggestions?

    In addition;
When renaming the folder it works fine.
Still I would like to find out why this MBP is behaving like this.
It seems like there is some sort of cache file?

  • Changing iTunes folder names

I have a lot of Classical CDs I am trying to put into iTunes. Problem 1 – whoever made these things was sloppy. An album of guitar music could come up spelled ghitare music on the folder or worse. Handel’s Chandos Anthems come up Chandons Anthems etc. Also I am irritated by the folder logic – I don’t want a folder for the orchestra performing something at the top level, I want the composer – eg Handel_Chandos Anthems Disk 1. But whenever I change the names of the folders, iTunes ignores me. Can I do anything about it?

If you have iTunes set to "Keep iTunes Media folder organized", the LAST thing you want to do is change folder names in Finder. You "break songs" that way and you end up with dozens of "!" tracks that you have to relocate, and guess what?
iTunes puts them RIGHT BACK where they were before you renamed the folder.
Renaming albums and artists shoukld always be done in your library.
I'm unaware of any way to force iTunes to create folders by composer, It uses Artist by default. Unless you change the Artist to the Composer, it won't use that name for the folder in your Media folder. It never has.

  • Update Folder Name in Itunes after altering Folder Name in Windows Explorer

I changed the names of Album folders using Windows Explorer. How can I make the new folder names appear in the Album list within Itunes?

iTunes doesn't display the folder names, it displays imnformation in the library database which it takes from the tags. If you want to chamge what iTunes displays, use Get Info to edit the information.
But if you change folder names in Windows explorer, iTunes will no longer be able to find the files as the path has changed and iTunes doesn't do folder watching.

  • Can you change the name of an app on the 4S?

Cannot find info in the manual but I thought that I read it somewhere. Is there a way to change the name of purchased apps? I know you can change folder names but what about app names?? Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.
    Mike

To the best of my knowledge you can't alter any app in any way, including the name. Not sure why you would want to do so, but you can always just delete the app and add it back without additional costs whenever you need to use it...not sure if that would address your reasoning for wanting to change the name of the app though.

  • How can I change my "Home directory" folder name?

    Hello, everyone.
I was given a pre-owned MacBook Pro that's running OS 10.6.8.  How can I change the name on the Home directory folder?  I was able to change the Administrator Account settings, but the Home directory still shows the previous owner's name.  It bothers me a bit, though, to see the previous owner's name still come up on the Home folder.
I came across the instruction listed below, but I can't get past step 4.  It instructs me "rename it just like I would rename any folder."  I can't seem to rename it, though.  The cursor doesn't come up when I click on the folder name.
For Mac OS X v10.5 or later
    Enable the root user.
    Log in as root.
    Navigate to the /Users folder.
Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).
    Disable the root user.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi everyone,
    I followed this https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3872
and got to the stage of having renamed my Home folder with the new name but the Home folder is STILL designated to the old name?
When I try and create a new user with the new name, I don't get asked if I'd like to use the existing name as Home folder, I get told I can't use the newname because it exists already - thats the end of it - no further options.
So to clarify - I now have oldname folder STILL assigned as Home folder. A newname folder with all my stuff in - apps, desktop, etc etc but this is just another user folder.
Interestingly at login stage, the oldname folder isn't an option. I think I've confused the system somewhere by titling things differently at some stage in an attempt to rename Home folder.
I'm running Mountain Lion (as of yesterday) and because I've kinda lost the use of my User folder as the Home folder, can't get to my Time Machine. I'm in trouble but I'm trying not to panic. Would appreciate any help!
