Changed hard drive, now screen is messed up
I recently changed out the hard drive on my 15" 2007 Macbook Pro from the factory 5400 RPM, 160GB drive to a Hitachi 7200 RPM, 500GB drive. I carefully followed instructions online on how to open the laptop up, remove and replace the hard drive. When I went to boot up the laptop after the new hard drive was in (with the original OS 10.4 boot disc that came with the computer in the DVD drive) it seemed to load fine at first. I was on the grey load screen for a while, and when it moved to the "Choose your language" screen that appears the first time you turn on your Mac, the screen was a garbled mess. The best way I can describe it is that it looks like an old TV with bad reception from rabbit ear antennae. There are diagonal, blocky black lines across the screen. I can move the mouse cursor fine, and can see that clearly, and if I press enter, it's obvious the computer is working and moves on to the next screen, but it's all behind a garbled mess. Technical support wasn't much help, and only suggested I take it into Mac, but I know they'll charge me to fix it. Any ideas?

Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys.

So my hard drive died and I replaced it. Not a problem as I thought I kept everything on my external hard drive. But now when I plug in my iphone 5 in and try to move newly created playlists across, it wont let me, says this phone is locked to my old hard drive and the only option is to wipe my phone and start again. I just want to move new playlist on to my phone.
This is correct.
iphone will sync with one library at a time. Syncing to a new one will indeed erase the current content.
Just put everything on the new hard drive from your backup copy and sync your iphone. -

Right got myself into a real mess, transferred data from old drive to new ... set up fstab ... grub is working...
But.... getting init kernel panic
Now I figure I need to reinstall kernel [via chroot! in wiki!]
first try did not work via ubuntu live cd so am burning arch disc now
I noticed that /dev is empty wondered is that would cause a problem
reallly do not want to install Ubuntu as I need my box hehe

Last edited by Mr Green (2008-07-22 15:21:45)While most things in /dev are created on the fly you do need a console node and a null node to boot the system. If you boot a cd, mount the drive (eg /mnt/disk) and then
mknod -m 600 /mnt/disk/dev/console c 5 1
mknod -m 666 /mnt/disk/dev/null c 1 3
That might fix the problem.
The other times I've had kernel panics have been when the root=/dev/sda? bit of the kernel line in grub was pointing to the wrong place (kernel was looking at my /home partition and wondering why it couldn't find init) so thats another thing I would check. -
I had to change my hard drive, now i'v tried to reinstall itunes it says i have to restore my iopd touch to factory settings and will loose my files. I have a few films on there and they show up on my purchases.If i restore, will i be able to get my films back ? as at the moment my ipod wont work now untill i restore anyway.
Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your device manually before syncing, you can restore from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Here's how to:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your ipod to your computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.

hi i have a macbook pro and when i changed the hard drive the screen wasn't as it was supposed to be it was green on it's side and blurred.what can i do to fix it and what is the reason?
either something got damaged when you installed the hard drive or you need to perform a pram reset (other possibilites could have occured, these are the ones I think)

I had to change my Hard Drive, now I want to work on files in iWeb, but can't access Time Machine before yesterday. The dates are there on the right hand side but are greyed out before yesterday when I changed my HD. How do I access anything from before?

If you still have the receipt or other proof of purchase, you can ask Apple to send you the serial. Otherwise, bad luck mate.. Good news is, you can now buy Logic Pro 9 from App Store for just 199 USD

I Have a MBP mid 2009, 8 Gb RAM, had mavericks, changed hard drive to get more space (500Gb) and couldn't restart from time machine so had to install Snow Leopard, now have OS 10.6.8 and can't update to mavericks again. Any help?You did not contact us. This is just a user to user forum where we try to help each other out. No one here works for Apple and as far as we know Apple do not even come here. Ring back the number you originally called on and ask for an explanation.

Swapped out hard drive, now can't start machine
The last time I was working on my iMac, it froze and I force quit Safari, I then used the power button on the back of the machine to turn it off. The 150GB hard drive is full with only about 10GB free space. Before checking the machine to see if it would start up properly again, I foolishly took out the hard drive and replaced it with a larger one. My intention was to copy back my data from my external backup drive via Carbon Copy Cloner onto this new larger drive. Unfortunately I can't get the computer to start now. I've attempted to start from the OSX disk and the c key, but that does not work. I've tried to start from an external disk via shift-command-option-delete to no avail. I've put the old drive back in but can't get it to be recognized either. I've pulled both 1GB RAM modules and returned the original sticks, just to see if the RAM was bad, not difference. I can't get the disk utilities window either.
Am I fried? I do not have either Disk Warrior or Tech Tools. Would either help?My mistake, you are correct, holding mouse down would eject didk. Yes, that is correct, I can not start from the optical drive by holding the c key, or the option key. I've tried to also start from an external firewire disk with OSX on it, with out success.
I have tried to start up in single user mode with command s, but can get only to a black screen and fans turning loudly, no blue screen, no grey screen, just blackness.
Am I correct in thinking I should be able to get to the screen where it will ask me if I want to format the new hard drive? Right now, if I understand things correctly, there is no operating system on the computer now, because I've changed hard drives (OS lives on hard drive, doesn't it?). If that is the case I should still be given a dialogue box which would offer to format the drive in preperation for installing the operatering system, yes?

Hard drive and screen failures

I have an early 2011 macbook pro, purchased in the fall of 2011.
Last repair:
I had 3 year apple care, and had last taken it for repairs september 2014, for first not ejecting discs from optical drive, then losing touchpad sensory control, then starting to sometimes not booting and/or black screen. When I got it back they had replaced the logic board, hard drive, and screen and connections there were a few screws not flush on the base, and they said that was fine, and it needed to be like that for the touchpad to work.
Today, this morning, it was fine. I left it at 9 am, came back at noon and the screen was black, and only the least of fan sounds
I have
MBPro early 2011 OSX 10.7.4 Lion
Use surge protector 95% of the time (except rarely when out at a cafe)
'Symptoms':
Black screen
No boot sound on start up
No sounds of hard drive or disc/DVD drive
No indicator light bar at the front right corner
Sound of fans running on low
Light from charger indicator is green (full)

Results: only when I use method A, then the optical drive clicks/buzzes. Otherwise no change for any other attempts I listed ^. If I shut down and restart with the power button then as before, no sounds except low level fan sound.
I am quite disappointed, one reason I've enjoyed Apple products is in being able to use them for 5-10 years :/Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software. -

Getting access to the drive from PC should be possible.. you may need to move public directory onto the external drive and then set up permissions to do it.. I have not done it and simply would not do it.
External hdd are cheap enough buy one for the pc.. That is then formatted NTFS which windows is going to natively read.. this will be much easier if the backups are ever required than to use HFS+ formatted disk hanging off the Mac.

i just saved my iphoto original library to my external hard drive, now how do i create new space on my hard drive and create a new iphoto library
Trash the copy of the library you just moved. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
But do you want to have two iPhoto Libraries? Why not just use the one on the External? -

FIRST, THE REPAIR PERMISSIONS SOLUTION:
Use Disk Utilities on the "Sofware Install and Restore" DVD that came with your computer to set the permissions back to the defaults. Not the MacOSX Installation Disk. (This worked in MacOS 10.3.9)
MY SCREW UP
In my Hard Drive's "Get Info" dialog I switched the permissions of the Owner to my username and all others to no access. I had not yet closed the dialog and decided that it was probably dangerous so I started changing them back. I first changed the owner back to system. It asked for authentication.
After entering my password I assumed that I would be able to go back and change the others as well. Nope! The dialog disappeared, my desktop disappeared and I couldn't do anything. I was locked out.
After ten minutes of the beachball I restarted to the "Panther Installation disk" and tried repairing permissioins using disk utility. Evertime it "lost contact" with the system and would not work. Restarting (without CD) took me to a root user login (black sreen). My username and password did nothing.
THE SOLUTION
I then restarted to the "Software Install and Restore" DVD that came with my computer and used its Disk Utility to repair permissions. IT WORKED! It set permissions back to the default. THANK GOD.
NOTE: I wonder, will using the Install and Restore DVD to repair permissions reset any computer's files to the defaults? Is that a backdoor into someones currently restricted files and folders? (Assuming that you have physical access and the computer specific DVD)Using the Repair Permissions function will not change the permissions on an account's home folder or anything in it, but there are at least two other ways in which someone with a Mac OS X 10.4 installation disk can get access to an account's files or folders unless some or all of those files are encrypted.

I got a new computer, Win 7, 64 bit OS, bought an external drive housing where my old hard drive now exists as an external drive. I downloaded a new copy of Firefox, 3.6.3, and would like to get my bookmarks from the old hard drive into the new one but have not found a way to do so. The organize bookmarks/import thing didn't work. I can SEE all of them on the other drive but can't find a way to import them to my new Firefox bookmarks without doing it one by one and there are a couple hundred. I'd like to be able to get them all and have them merge into identically named folders, only a few of which I've created so far in the new machine.
Ok, let me try to explain step-by-step:
#The bookmarks are '''not''' in HTML file. This is OK. Firefox does not store the bookmarks in HTML format.
#Even if you boot the old Firefox, it will show the new bookmarks. This is also OK. You can't really do much about that.
#Uninstalling and re-installing Firefox will '''not''' solve your problem. Firefox will '''not''' see the bookmarks in the external hard drive. Please '''do not''' try this approach.
Now, to make things as simple as possible, let's try to bring all of your old bookmarks and settings into the new computer.

#You said you were able to locate the Profile folder on the '''external hard drive''', right? Just to confirm, the name of this folder is something like xxxxxxxx.default (for example, my Profile folder is named 9qnmvkea.default. Yours will be something similar).
