Changed hard drive now system will not boot [Solved]
Hi,
Right got myself into a real mess, transferred data from old drive to new ... set up fstab ... grub is working...
But.... getting init kernel panic
Now I figure I need to reinstall kernel [via chroot! in wiki!]
first try did not work via ubuntu live cd so am burning arch disc now
I noticed that /dev is empty wondered is that would cause a problem
reallly do not want to install Ubuntu as I need my box hehe

While most things in /dev are created on the fly you do need a console node and a null node to boot the system. If you boot a cd, mount the drive (eg /mnt/disk) and then
mknod -m 600 /mnt/disk/dev/console c 5 1
mknod -m 666 /mnt/disk/dev/null c 1 3
That might fix the problem.
The other times I've had kernel panics have been when the root=/dev/sda? bit of the kernel line in grub was pointing to the wrong place (kernel was looking at my /home partition and wondering why it couldn't find init) so thats another thing I would check.

Hard drive detected but will not boot Windows Vista or recovery disk
Hi,
I have a very similar issue with a HP Pavillion a6355.uk, the hard drive kept crshing windows and then it finally just kept getting pass the HP boot menu options, and then all I get is the DOS "@press ctrl+alt+del to restart".
The hard drive is detected and passes all the tests, after pressing F9, going into the F10 options. F11 does not do anything, so cannot recover windows/the system.
I have tried changing the SATA connections on the motherboard, no difference. I tried the recovery boot disk I created when it was working and it will not boot with the old or new hard drive I bought to replace it (same size and compatable).
I cannot find where to partition the new hard drive or format the c: on the old one (it had D: for the recovery, but as it won't boot, cannot access this).
I have also tried the HP website to dowload the drivers for the new one, but the page does not load up to show any drivers or Windows to download.

Vista 32bit .iso You must have a valid installation key, which should be on the COA sticker on the computer, to activate the installation once it completes. ImageBurn to create the .iso disk. Driver page Vista (not 64 bit)

Tried to update Mac book pro to maverick now system will not boot
I downloaded the maverick update but something happened during the update and now my Mac book pro will not boot into the os. What should I do?
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Didn't eject my external hard drive now it will not reconnect
I just got my MacBook Air, been using a PC up until now. Earlier this morning I plugged in my external hard drive and transfered some music onto my MacBook Air. When I removed my external hard drive I didn't not eject it, now when I plug it in my MacBook does not even see it. I tried different hard drives and I can see them. I even tried using that hard drive on my old PC and it works. How do I get my MacBook to recognize the hard drive again? Still new to the whole MacBook experience.

Type: diskutil list to find your drive (mine is disk2s2)
Unmount the drive: diskutil unmount /dev/disk2s2
Mount the drive: diskutil mount /dev/disk2s2
The drive immediately appeared on my desktop allowing full access with no damaged files or corrupt disk. -
10.5.8 Both hard drives OK, tested - will not boot past startup screen
Okay, I have an early 2008 MacPro, and everything has been running fine, but I was trying to search for something in Finder, and it wouldn't show up, so I checked my other hard drive's permission options - it displayed "Custom" for all users, when I know I had them all set to "Read & Write" previously, so i changed my main user's (on my newer HD on 10.5.8) permission to Read & Write on the original HD with 10.6.8, so I could search its contents, then these error messages poppped up, everytime i hit OK, a new one popped up immediately in its place, with some "Apple AUD" OR "HD" messages (can't remember the exact messsages), so I restarted my computer and now I cannot get past the apple logo screen.
- Attempted selecting both hard drives as startup discs and still hangs at the white apple logo screen.
- I tried booting into Safe Mode and it loads the status bar, and when it's done loading, it simply goes back to the spinning gear.
- Tried booting from my 10.5.8 installation disc and it works, both of my HD's tested "OK" when I verified them.
- Tried resetting PRAM, and even reset SMC, and the problem persists.
One last note: the original HD that came with my Mac Pro, which has 10.6.8 on it as of last year, has a tiny lock icon on the left of the little hard drive graphic.
I'm stressed because I use LOGIC a lot, and I have all of my music projects on these hard drives, and over a million files between both of them. I'd pull my hair out, if I hadn't just shaved my head for summer
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!Your hard drives may be OK, but the installed systems are not. You need to reinstall OS X on your startup volume. Doing this with Leopard requires your Leopard DVD:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
After receiving an error when I try to install the latest update of OS-X, I took my laptop to oour schools IT dept. They tried to run the update in safe mode and then they got an error saying the system could not find the hard drive. Now they want to run a clean install which loses 1000's of docs and pictures. I have Block I exams in med school next Monday and all of my notes and slides are on that hard drive.
The IT dept took the hard drive out and tried to back it up and they said they other computer could not connect or find my hard drive.

I have Norton antivirus and have never found any viruses on the system. I also have a program called ExamSoft which some other students here have noted they had similar crashes. Not sure if that is the issue...Several take home messages here:
always back up before you update.
always back up anything you don't want to lose. Kind of like flossing. Only floss the teeth you don't want to lose.
Norton is very, very bad software, and you should get rid of it.
You don't need antivirus software on your mac. Antivirus software on macs causes more trouble than it is worth.
Your hard drive may be failing and thus may not be salvageable.
You could try booting into the recovery partition and seeing if you can repair your hard drive.
If that doesn't work, then there is a small chance that a third party utility (like Disk Warrior or TechTool) might be able to fix your drive (if it is not failing).
If that doesn't work, you may be able to send your drive and a lot of cash to a drive recovery service and see if they can get your files off it.
In the mean time, get notes and slides from a (smart) friend. -
Installed new hard drive now iTunes will not load my purchases on my iPod
I installed a new hard drive on my computer and successfully transferred all my files to the new hard drive. The first time I tried to sync my iPod a message appeared that my iPod would have to be reformatted to operate with this version of Windows.
Now, iTunes recognizes my iPod but during the update an error message displayed indicating my iTunes purchases were prohibited from being loaded on my iPod and removed the purchases I originally had on my iPod.
How do I get iTunes to include my purchases when syncing my iPod?Thank you Patrick. You solved my problem. Just checked it out and I now have my purchases on my iPod. Only annoying thing was I had to authenticate my computer a couple of times.

Changed partition settings now Windows will not boot

I suspect I've created a problem that I've made progressively worse in trying to solve it... Any help much appreciated!
A month ago I created a bootcamp partition (about 850Gig OS X and 150Gig for Win7), successfully installed Windows 7 and everything was fine.
After an acciental delete of itunes media incident I thought I would create a Time Machine backup partition on the OS X part of the drive so used the Disk Utility to do so, making sure I "took" from OS X and not the Bootcamp partition. I now had three partitions: OS X (500Gig), a Backup (350Gig) and a Bootcamp (150Gig) (I now suspect some of you might be screaming I've created the problem here already...) noting that the 150Gig Bootcamp partition is still as it was and the diagram in Disk Utility has always shown it as the bottom section.
Perhaps I'm being naive here but it never occured to me that splitting the OS X partition would have any impact at all on the Bootcamp partition!
Anyway, now I'm unable to boot to Windows (black screen "No bootable device" etc message).
Checking Finder, all the files on the Bootcamp partition still seem to be there - User settings/accounts, Program Files, the lot.
Is there anyway I can easily rectify this? (eg put the Windows 7 disk in and repair the install or something?!)
I tried deleting the extra Backup partition I created without luck (the space just gets greyed out and unallocated)
Help! I really don't want to have to go through the whole mess of reinstalling Windows 7 on to the Bootcamp partition (that to my mind still hasn't been touched!) and have to download the dozens of gigs required to reinstall the software currently present.It has and can be done but backup to the same drive is rather pointless, shadow copies and file revisioning... external and separate. I thought with Lion and notebooks that there already is a temporary hidden backup folder, hidden, check iwth Lion Comm. already.
Boot from Windows DVD and do some BCD magic to get it back.

Also, there are programs and even Windows 7 will create a system recovery CD and image... something you should be doing already so you never face loss or if a worm/mal/trojan/virus should cause havoc.

You can try running Windows startup repair from the disk, but>
Before you do anything make a backup (a clone, for speedier disaster recovery)
If startup repair fails then reinstalling Windows is called for, so while you are at it I would repartition the drive completely, put your Lion installation back on the Mac from your clone, make a new prtition in Boot Camp and reinstall Windows. Then if you have backups of the Windows side (Windows Backup or similar) restore the data. -
System will not boot with Seagate 3Tb expansion drive plugged in.
I have a HP Pavilion HPE h8- 1214 Desktop , I recieved a Seagate 3TB expasion drive as a gift but when plugged in, the system will not boot. It turns on but thats it. It never gets to the boot sequence. I have it plugged into the top 3.0 usb slot and have tried all of the other slots as well with no sucess. But if I leave it unplugged the system boots right up. I can then plug it in and it works fine. I have plugged it into my wifes HP All- In- One and it boots fine and works. I have a WD 2TB drive that works fine as well on my system . I have searched Segates support for hours and all they say is to change the boot sequence. Have tried that, no go. What they dont get is no matter what I do if that drive is plugged in it never gets as far as booting and reading the boot sequence. Please help. Thank you!

I have an H8 1380t PC. Updated the TI USB 3.0 driver and had the same problem.
When booting the PC with the USB 3.0 external drive connected to the PC the PC would not boot. When booting the PC with only the mouse, keyboard, and a USB 2.0 external drive attached the PC would boot. Once booted you could attach the USB 3.0 drive and it worked fine.
Solution was to roll back (reinstall) the TI USB 3.0 XHCI Host Controller to the original factory installed driver.
System now boots with the external USB 3.0 drive attached.

hi! bought the iphone 4s in Italy and it does not work. Operating reference system will not boot. Change of firmware and restore did not help. How can I change it while in Russia. Can I send in the mail store??

Hello, I am trying to install windovws after the restart can not install Yosemite because can`t please format the hard disk.Please help because just yesterday bought macbooc
FYI...the top partition is too full. You need free space. You will need to remove the bottom partition then make the top partition larger. Make sure you have 10% or more free space. If you use Parallels or VMware you don't have to partition your drive. If you use the vm software you can run Windows wihtout having to reboot into bootcamp each time you want to use it.

I forgot to ask...
If the system will not boot, how are you seeing Disk Utility. Are you booted from the Recovery Drive? If yes, then you will need to erase the internal drive and reinstall Yosemite on the internal. When you erase, make it one partition. You can add a second partition later that's smaller.

Using Mac OSX Install Disc 1, I am not able to get any further than the Partition tab. It allows me to select my hard drive selection, but will not allow me to make any other selections such as options. Does anyone know their way around this obstacle? Am I doing anything wrong? Thanks
Hello, The Hatter, I read about the 'trick' of backing up, erasing, and restoring too, but I figured it would take longer than defragmenting the disk.
But the defragmentation process has just finished! so I'm gonna try to run Boot Camp again soon!

And P.S. I didn't clone my system onto the external drive, I just inserted the Mac OS X Install CD, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and installed a fresh Snow Leopard system onto the predetermined partition. I will use that in cases of emergency, when my main/internal system becomes unusable. -

just recently upgraded to Win Pro on my HP PAVILION A6109N. I also bought a toshiba canvio desk 3TB. What I notice is that if I reboot my pc with the extermnal HDD connected, my system will not boot.
I have check my BIOS boot settings and the order of the boot.
I have tried disabling USB Legacy Support in the BIOS
I have reformatted the external HDD
but still my desktop will not boot if the external HDD is connected....If I disconnect the external HDD...the system will boot up ....
I am at a loss....*** scratching my head ***Update: The only solution for me was to format the drive as ext3 and plug it into one of my Asus RT-N66U USB ports, as most routers don’t yet recognize 3TB drives as NTFS. It’s not much help to people who don’t have a router with this capability, and it also slows transfer rates to ~12MB/s.
Given the short length of the cable, your only other options are to have the 3TB Canvio sitting right next to you so you can unplug from a front USB port before each boot, or place it towards the rear of your desk and crawl under the desk to disconnect it from your PC prior to each boot.
It's a pity because Toshiba produce great internal HDD's, but my experience when it comes to external drives is they're simply junk. I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing. -

Put it all together formatted the HDD, installed windows, network was working perfectly. (on ASUS via600 board)
Next day turn it on and nothing, zilch not even a flashing cursor top left of screen, dont even boot to DOS. screen is completely blank.
Tested CPU, GFX, RAM and PSU in another base unit and they work fine, yet put them all together and nothing.
1st I thought it was the mainboard so I sent the ASUS board back and ordered the KT6 Delta nice looking board. But still exactly the same problem.
Lights on case are lit all fans are turning ect yet still the system will not boot up i dont even get a flashing cursor top right of my screen.
There is no light with this mainboard for some reason.
All components work when fitted to another mainboard in a different case.
NB: one thing I have noticed is that there are two power sockets on this board,
1. The usual 20 pin socket (which I am connected to)
2. A 4 pin socket near to the CPU (whilst my PSU has a plug that will fit this sockect also, I am unsure as to connect instead of/as well as or leave unplugged.Like I have stated before, it is the compatibility issue related towards your chip fsb and your memory fsb. I know that not everyone has money to go buy another stick of memory, I don't. But maybe you could exchange from the place you bought and say that it was a mistake? The cheapest route without getting the fsb chip to match the fsb of the memory stick is to get PC2700 memory. Have you tried going for this yet? I'm sure that your motherboard may not be shot, my board didn't get shot after trying to the two different fsb. You have to understand, motherboards are picky when it comes to running the hardware. If there is a conflict, it won't run right, I could run at a lower fsb and get it to work fine, but it wasn't at it's full potential, and I wasn't going to waste my time trying to find the fsb that would work correctly. So, I just let my friend have the stick back. This is why I'm asking you to try a lower speed stick of memory, because I have experienced this. But so far you haven't even seemed to notice my replies, could you take a quick overview of what I have said? Sorry if I come off as rude, just I am taking the time to write these replies and really am trying to help from my knowledge base. I have experienced this type of problem of what you are talking about personally.
Ok, so maybe I might not know it all, seeing that other people replying here have the same mb spec and chip fsb and memory like your trying to run, they might know more when it comes to that area for sure, just I didn't have luck trying to run a faster stick of memory compared to my chip, even though my board could run it, I couldn't get it to work, at all. I would just get a black screen, I thought I shot my GPU. Then I reset CMOS and the bios would flash, then when it would start pulling from harddrive, boom, black screen again. I had my friend tinker with my volt. to the right volts of the memory stick, still couldn't get nothing. This is why I am a little skeptical about you being able to run it at all in the long run. Hopefully you can find a way, maybe it is your manufacturer of your stick, but my conclusion is, if it isn't going to work with one, or two of same speed, try lowering it. Like I said, I tried it on this setup right now, and I didn't have to replace the chip or mobo, or gpu, so those should be fine.
