Changed name of computer on a timemachine session

I initially made the time machine backup with the computer named the default Administrator's Macbook Pro 15". A couple of months later I changed the name (under sharing) to something else. The sparse image file on the backup disk still says "administrators macbook pro"blahblahblah.sparsebundle".
Time Machine still seems to make backups fine, but i think i can only search back to the date when i changed the computers name. What have i done? Will this cause problems down the line as far as restorations or migrations go? In TM when i go to get info for a file it will say for the source something like /volumes/backup of administrators macbook pro 15"/backups.backupdb/Anne's Macintosh/somekindof date and a bunch of letters/the filepath from macintosh HD
What does all of this mean? Do I need to redo everything? What are the options? Can i start over from just the point where i made the name change?
Thanks a lot.

No, that's not correct. You can search as far back as you need to. TM can take care of things like this. You don't have to do anything and all your backups will be available to you both from TM interface and for migration.

  • Changing Name of Computer in Finder

This is a general question.  I just purchased a new Macbook Air and set it up.  In Finder where my name should be it says "macowner".
Is there any way to change that?
    Thanks

Change the computer's name in the Sharing pane of System Preferences and create a new administrator account in the Accounts pane.

How can I uniquely identify computers on the same network/account specifically for airdrop use?  When I change name on one computer under contacts it changes on all computers.  I would like to change icon and name for each computer.

you would need to setup a VPN and tunnel into your office.
    FYI..the default ports are 3283 and 5900.

Time Capsule error 22 - My time capsule was working fine and didn't notice anything wrong with it until it stopped backing up about two weeks ago. I never changed anything like computer names or the Airport settings. All I get is the following:
The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Linda's Computer 1.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22).
I tried resetting the Time Capsule and connecting with an ethernet cable, although the Ariport Utility says everything is working fine through WiFi.

If the light will not turn on the TC is dead. No matter that the hard disk is running.. it should only run at start up or when it is accessed not constantly.. that means the board in the TC has failed. Apple do not repair them.. They will replace it under warranty or applecare.
If you have gone over the 12month warranty it will still be covered if you have applecare on any computer or an Apple TV. In fact the cost of the apple TV plus apple care is still cheaper than buying a new TC.. so it is a route some people are taking.. certainly depends.. in some places like Europe or Australia now, there is a recognition that statutory warranty must be longer on a product that is premium to the market. 12months is not good enough. Apple will sometimes listen.
They might be fixable but I do not know how.

Other programs still trigger a UAC prompt. The strictness of UAC can be changed to either always prompt, or to never do so.

  • Can't change names of folders or drives on desktop

All of a sudden my powers to change names of files and folders on desktop has been taken away from me, I'm stuck with untitled folder 1,2,etc..

    Hi Rugger,
Sounds like a permissions thing. Try using Disk Utility. It's here:
    Applications/Utilities.
Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, then click
Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility.
Reboot and see if that makes a difference.
And some tips about naming or renaming folders ... etc.
    Changing the names of items
You can easily change the name of a file, folder, or disk on your computer.
IMPORTANT: To avoid problems using Mac OS X or applications on your computer, don't move or change the names of folders that came with your system (such as the Library folder or your home). You should also not change the names of applications or items associated with specific applications. If you accidentally change the name of an installed item and you experience problems, you can change the name back.
Locate the item you want to rename on your desktop or in a Finder window.
Click the item to select it, then click the name. The name is highlighted and you will be able to edit it.
Type the new name and press Return.
Some document names have a file extension, such as ".txt" or ".jpg." If you change the name of a file and delete the extension, some applications may no longer recognize the file. To ensure the file can be recognized by the application that created it, change only the part of the name that comes before the extension, or open the file using the appropriate application, then save the file with a new name.
You cannot change the name of an item in the Finder window's sidebar. You must locate the item on your desktop or in a Finder window to highlight and change the name.

  • How can I download Firefox without being asked for "permision to allow Firefox to make changes to my computer"?

I've downloaded Firefox on several computers and have never had a problem in the past. You click the most recent version and the download process is just as described. However, this time around (maybe b/c I'm using Windows7?) I would click download, Run, and then it would ask if I would give Firefox permission to make changes to my computer. This sounds really weird, and I don't think I was asked that before. If I say no, the download remains incomplete. Why does this happen? And every time I click on the download link, the file name for where it's "From" differs. Why is that?
    == I attempted to download Firefox ==

    Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0)

Check that you do not run Firefox as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
In the Compatibility tab, make sure that Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" is not selected.
You also need to check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program directory.

  • Magic Mouse changed name by it self?

    HI all,
I need help solving something an issue with one of my coworkers.
I have a mac Mini with a bluetooth magic mouse.
Yesterday when I arrived to my desk in my office and turned on my computer, I got the low battery alert for my magic mouse, I clicked on the bluetooth icon on the top of my screen to find out exactly how much battery I had left and then I notice that the name of the magic mouse had that of a coworker (Coworker´s Name Mouse) witch was odd since it did had my name on it, and then I notice the wear on the mouse and even do I am not sure of how it really looked like before that day, It does look like it has had a worst life than the one I have given it. At that moment I went to ask my coworker if he had mistakenly switched mouses to what he responded that no, he only took it once when I was out of the office but put it right back in my desk and since his laptop (MacBook Pro) had never used a magic mouse before the magic mouse graved his name and replaced it.
I'm not sure if that is true, if once a Magic mouse is paired with one computer, does it change name that easy?
I don't want to accuse him of cheating me with an older mouse so I really want to be sure....
    Thanks for your help!!
    Xavier Perez

The Magic Mouse is named after the first computer it pairs up with and will retain that name until it is manually changed.

  • Why did my base station change names?

For the last 3 years my network had two names. NicTonTimCap and NicTon guest. I wake up this morning to see flashing Amber light and can only find Harry's WiFi Network. The same password worked but why did this happen?
    Thanks,
    Harry

When you open the airport utility go to the wireless tab.. has the name actually changed for wireless..
If so this might all be part of the way Apple is trying to help you automate file transfers by a strange peer to peer process.. although how it can self setup the airport is a mystery..
I would put it down to a fresh bug in Yosemite.. reset the network names to what YOU want.. if it happens again and you have applecare then ring apple to see if they have some new functionality in Yosemite that automatically changes names of the wireless network.
I presume your computer name is Harry (or some part thereof).

  • Changing shortname of computer, adminstrator, existing accounts?

My mother-in-law bought a new iMac last month, hated it, and turned it over to us.
I can delete her files on my own, but I don't know how to change the official computer name, get rid of her @mac.com accounts, etc. She has a .mac account that she'd like to maintain because she's set up a website on it.
Is this something I should entrust to ProCare (have an appointment for Friday morning), or are these changes I can make on my own?
    Thanks!

    Go to your Applications folder
    Click on Utilities
Open Netinfo Manager (becareful with this program, you can screw up a lot in here)
    click on users
Scroll down to your short username
Scrool down in the lower pane to name:
Double click it and rename it to whatever you want.
    quit and save changes.
This name is only a name change, it will not affect your directory name. I assume you can change your directory name and change the reference in Netinfo. I've never tried it myself, but be cautious if you do try to do that.
    Cheers
    T

  • How do I change name of ipod touch on windows when it it says it is  a different name?

When I connect my ipod touch to my computer it is recognized as another family members ipod but has my photos.  How do I change name?

It would depend however on the age of the child.

  • Icon wont change name-how do i fix?

i partitioned my HD with bootcamp, installed XP........now i want to rename "untitled" to XP HD
normally when i click on the text under the XP i can rename it...but now thats not working
Why? and how can i fix it?.............is it because i am showing statistics under the Icon (10.69GB)

i called Apple and found out what the problem was,I am posting THIS incase anyone else has the problem
The Icon that would not change names was the bootcamp Icon which now has a version of Windows Xp in it.
I installed Xp in NTFS format, had i done it in FAT i could have changed the icons name ,If i had changed it PRIOR to installing XP i could have changed the name
How i ended up changing it was i had to boot into Windows
then click into My Computer-->Properties--> and change the name inside the properties box from Local C: to XP HD............when i booted back to OS10 it automatically updated itself
I also had to connect a Windows Mouse to my use to Right click into Properties on my computer.
