Changed NTFS filesystem to ext4 accidentally [Solved]

OK, so due to enter happy finger and lack of sleep, I accidentally changed the filesystem of my windows partitions to ext4 and swap. >.< When I realized what I was doing, I hit the power off button pretty quick.
Is there a way to recover my data by re-writing the partition table or something? I hate to have lost all the work from a momentary lapse of judgment.
ETA: Heh, well, apparently I can mount it with ntfs-3g so I guess I hit the power off fast enough.

The problem is indeed caused by bad blocks.
But it wasnt that easy to prove that, when ms chkdsk always fails to finish :-)
Ive used "hdd regenerator". I dont what did the program exactly do with the hdd, but after the "regeneration" ms chkdsk was finally able to check the disk and showed a lot a of bad blocks. :-(
So it seems this has nothing to do with arch linux. The timing was just a coincidence..
btw the hdd is a Samsung HD103SJ, 2 months old :S
thx for the responses ;-)

  • Data recovery after filesystem change ntfs- ext4

    so here's my story:
i wanted to instal arch on a friend's machine and it was a success. BUT i accidentaly used a wrong partition and changed the filesystem from ntfs to ext4.
normally i would use something to recover my data but the filesystem change bothers me.
is it even possible to recover anything from it?
i have heard that test disk would be able to do this task, but there's a probability of damaging other partitions.
    what do i do?
    any help is appreciated

What exactly did you do? As far as I know, there is no way to 'change filesystems'.
Did you run a mkfs.ext4 on said partition?
the partition has beed formated from ntfs to ext4 while instalation. so it has arch on it at the moment

  • [solved] Hibernate corrupting NTFS-Filesystem

    Hey Guys.
I'm running an Dualboot of Arch (x64) and Win7 (32bit) for a long time now, perfectly. sda1 is my ntfs formatted windows partion, sda2 and following arch. I have a little Script that hibernates arch and set grub to boot windows, it looks like this:
    #!/bin/bash
echo "Press ENTER to boot Windows"
    read -s -n 1
    grub-set-default 2
    suspend2disk
And it worked perfectly till today. The mistake was to make a new install of windows (the old one was messed up due some software testing), and i decided to use the x64 win7. I don't know if its cause of this. But now the hole hibernating thing is crashing my ntfs filesystem.
Steps to reproduce: umount and format sda1, suspend. Install windows, booted from an arch-cd and setting up my grub again. resumed arch, mount sda1 and copied some install sources to the windows desktop (i have the folder as bookmark in thunar), running the hibernate script and booted windows. I installed a hole bunch of things on windows, and deleted the install sources from desktop. After finishing this (no arch boot meanwhile), i rebooted and bring up my arch again. I opened Thunar and accessed the windows desktop. And surprise, there are the install sources on desktop. It shows the folder like before the hibernate. confused about this, i remounted the partition, but no change. Booting windows again results in an nice filesystem corruption error and a system rescue. So, the question is: Why?
I should say, that today i updated gamin (0.1.10-4 -> 0.1.10-5). Could this be the culprit? maybe just an accident that the reinstall of windows and the update happens the same day.
I will test to umount the ntfs before suspending, maybe it will help. Or maybe just remounting read-only will do the job.
    So far, Corubba

After resuming from hibernation, the system is supposed to be in the same state as before the hibernation. You cannot modify a hibernated mounted file system without corrupting it. A mounted filesystem can never be modified by a tool when it is mounted and this is exactly what you do. In principle remounting it read only is not sufficient either.
The hibernation cannot unmount all filesystems before hibernating because that would just mean rebooting the normal way, not hibernating (but it could make sense to unmount the specific filesystem you want to access, for example the Windows one).
In your situation, you have to fully unmount the windows ntfs partition before hibernating your computer and be sure you do not access the linux partition from windows in any way.

  • [Solved] Non-root user cannot access mounted ntfs filesystem

    Hi -,
i have a dualboot system (arch/xfce + win7) and i use a ntfs partition /dev/sda2 to store files i use with both operating systems. I added the partition to fstab and it gets mounted, but i cannot access it with my non-root user. With root it works fine...
    My fstab:
    # cat /etc/fstab
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
    LABEL=home /home ext4 defaults 0 1
    LABEL=root / ext4 defaults 0 1
    LABEL=swap swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/sda2 /media/sda2 ntfs defaults 0 2
Is there any option that allows all users to use the mounted device? Or how is this usually done ...

See: NTFS-3G for important setup information.
    My fstab line looks like:
    /dev/sdb1 /media/Win_USB ntfs-3g uid=1000,gid=users,fmask=113,dmask=0022 0 0
This sets up some important parameters which the NTFS-3G Wiki Page covers.  Basically, "ntfs" is only a basic driver and is built into the kernel.  "ntfs-3g" is a much better, and less disk-eating, driver that you should install and use if you need the drive in Linux any more than occasionally.  My fstab line makes my user (1000) the owner and the masks lets me write and etc to it.  When you install NTFS-3G it is automatically used when you use the mount command to mount NTFS drives.  In fstab, as above, you would specify it explicitly.
You can find your own user number by entering "id" at a terminal.

Wouldn't you think a MS OS knows how to format a drive correctly using that format, I do. It is Apple Mac that is not doing it correctly.
Kindly note that the word "correctly" does not appear in my post. I'm not quite sure how the statement,
"the Mac OS X exFAT filesystem implementation is not compatible with Win's default cluster size for exFAT"

  • Help with a Kernel Panic caused by NTFS filesystem

    Hello All,
I need  a little help trying to diagnose a reacurring kernel panic.
I originally thought it was being caused by Intego Virus Barrier, but that has been uninstalled for over a week now. On avergage, I get about 2 kernel panics a day. I have not been able to isolate why it panic's when it does. Looking at the Panic logs, I believe the issue to be with the Bootcamp partition, but before I go and reformat the drive, I wanted to check with the community to see if there was anything I can do.  I have not launched into Bootcamp in probably over 2 months, but the panics started about 2 weeks ago.
I have performed the Extended Apple Hardware test several times and there seems to be no issue.
The consistant item in all the logs is

    com.apple.filesystems.ntfs(3.4)@0x14da000->0x1539fff
    Any insight is appreaciated.

    Hi Hatter,
Thanks for the response.  I actually did not intend to post this in the Windows Software Category. I'm not sure how it ended up there as I thought I was in the MacBookPro discussion area.
So, I am running Mac OS 10.6.7 and get these panics. I have neither VirusBarrier or Little Snitch installed.
The kernel extension com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is what I am assuming is the culprit as it is consistantly listed in the backtrace.
I have read both of the mentioned articles.  I do not seem to get the Kernel Panics when booted in safe mode, but I assume that is because the com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is not loaded when in safe mode and the Boot Camp partition does not mount (and cannot be).
So if Apple Hardware Test shows the drive as being healthy. The panic also mentions the active thread as mds. So I'm guessing that Spotlight is trying to index the NTFS partition and something in the middle is getting angry and causing the panics. Without re-formatting, is there any way to re-install just the Bootcamp extenisions for Mac OS X?
Or am I off base here?

  • USB flash drive 5times faster with ntfs filesystem?

    Hello,
I have a weird problem with my USB Voyager GT 16GB flash drive.  I formated it in ext2/ext3/xfs/fat32 and then start copying a file >1GB in size. The speed of transfer very quickly drops to 2-4MB/s. That is very slow. And if I format it in ntfs it works as it should be 16-17MB/s in linux with ntfs-3g. I really don't get it. I've been playing with all sort of options all day and is driving me nuts Tried even another kernel with BFS and BFQ I/O sheduler kernel26-ck and the problem is identical. Tried turning of legacy support in BIOS for USB and nothing, the problem is still here. Mount it it with "async" option which gave me speed of 800KB/s... Is it possible that Voyager GT 16GB doesn't work good with any other filesystem? Or maybe I'm missing something... Clearly it isn't problem with usb 2.0 ports because all of them are 2.0 and the ntfs speed wouldn't be that good if the flash was working in usb 1.1  mode. Any thought would be much welcome
    Thanks in advance,

I'm seriously thinkg to toss computer out throught the windows cause this problem is driving me insance. I'm loosing hours every day on constat reformatting of my USB drive. In windows no problem, but in linux, it drives me crazy! Slow! Slow! Slow! Its the same on another computer... The problem must be in schedulers, i've tried them all. I'm now on the latest kernel and it's still driving me nuts...
USB Hard disk have lesser problems than this stick... But in windows everything is fine with the stick...
And also when I copy all system slows down, it becomes unresponsive...
I'm on x64 Arch with KDE4, and my system is up to date. The problem is here for couple of years and I'm thinking really to switch back to windows cause I cannot use my computer for basic things... I mean I do not need it for Adobe Premier Pro, but I would like to transfer couple of mkv files now and then I don't want to loose two hours every time I wan't to do that... Damn, I'm mad
This is my cat /proc/interrupts. The rescheduling interrupts are very high.

  • Filesystem check failed + accidental /boot deletion

Yesterday I rebooted my PC and suddenly Arch started complaining about "Filesystem check failed", just like stated by the OP in this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 00#p941200
The problem was with two partitions: /boot and /home. I tried to no avail to manually fsck them using the maintenance console and e2fsck as well as the forcefsck command but it didn't work.
I didn't try any LiveCD back then but since I saw that in that thread the OP solved his problem by deleting some folders located at /media:
    Fixed the problem.
The /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda5 were being mounted in the wrong place.
Instead of being mounted in /home and /boot as per /etc/fstab, they were being mounted in new directories in /media called /media/usbhd-sda2 and /media/usbhd-sda5. Upon deleting those folders, everything has gone back to normal.
I have no idea how those new folders got created...but problem solved now.
    Thanks for the help, guys
    Samsom
Problem is I didn't think at all when I read this post and went right away to delete the problematic folders (the post itself didn't exactly explain how the OP managed to unmount the partitions and then proceed to delete the folders, my umount commands didn't work so it wasn't crystal clear to me how he managed it, my bad tho for not checking what I was deleting).
Luckily, I think I only managed to delete partially my /boot folder (thus GRUB now complains and doesn't boot any system). So now my question is, is there a way to restore my /boot folder without a full system re-install?
    Thanks in advance.

But what is the command?  mkinitcpio -p kernel26 ? Also how do I fix this grub issue? I'm assuming grub created a default menu.lst after I copied the config files and setup the hd0 but I actually don't recall checking that.
Just re-did all steps including rebuilding the kernel, I still can't get the boot menu when I reboot. It goes directly to grub console.
I checked the generated menu.lst, it lists my root as the device where /boot partition is and the kernel line root enrty is defined for the arch system I want to boot :\

  • Changing ntfs permissions

    This is a basic question.
I have a windows 2012 server standard with a windows 8 client. On the server is a share AfdelingProductie. This share is on the client mapped to the drive S: for the user Flo_Fli. The user creates a document test.txt in the drive.I file explorer on the client
I open properties of the document. Then i choose tab security, button advanced. There I want to change the ntfs permissions by disabling inheritance, removing group and adding a group with adapting the permissions. When I click apply: I get the message:access
denied. Is it normal that I cannot change the ntfs permissions as owner with full control on the client?

    Hi,
Please give the everyone group full control for share permission and then to change the NTFS permission.

  • My MacBook Pro does not read NTFS format, how can I solve this problem?

I connected my external Hard drive to my Mac and it gives the error abou not reading the NTFS files... is there an app that can solve this problem?
    Thanks a lot

You can take the drive to a PC, off load the files and right click and format the drive exFAT or FAT and place the files back on, then the Mac can read it.
If you install NTFS reading software on your Mac, you will always be paying for it and it's updates, breaks your connections to the hard drive as well.
Neutral formats are best, proprietary ones that require one to pay is bad.

If the basics from the User Guide have all been tried (restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new) and you still have problems, then you've done all the troubleshooting you can do.  You'll need to bring your phone into Apple or an authorized service provider in your area.

  • Unable to create filesystem (mkfs.ext4) 2TB CentOS 6.5 VM

All, We have been having trouble creating disk volumes larger than 2TB on CentOS machines in our lab environment that consists of Hyper-V 2012 R2.
Today we came a step closer with the help of
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/bc1ee7e7-dcaf-455b-baec-01e6128ddd28/action?threadDisplayName=unable-to-create-filesystem-mkfsext4-on-large-gt-2tb-gpt-virtual-disk-using-linux-vm - which suggests mkfs with the '-K' option.
This has created a mountable logical volume, however it only registers as 2TB, rather than the actual size of 4TB. I notice the article is over a year old. Has there been any fixes?
The alternative would be multiple 2TB drives..

As part of the product team that does Linux on Hyper-V, we've recently spent some time investigating this problem.  It occurs because Linux issues a SCSI "WRITE_SAME(16)" command, which is not implemented by Hyper-V.  WRITE_SAME(16) is optional
in the SCSI spec, so it's OK that Hyper-V doesn't implement it, but the problem is that Hyper-V doesn't return the correct error code and sense info to indicate that it's unimplemented.  With the correct error code from Hyper-V, Linux would use alternate
SCSI commands and everything would work.
We're looking into possible fixes.  Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we can have an update on what to expect.
We believe Ubuntu 14.04 actually works correctly on Hyper-V due to a complicated set of other reasons.  RHEL 7.0 does not work, and the other file system types don't typically avoid the problem either.

  • Unable to create filesystem (mkfs.ext4) on large 2TB GPT virtual disk using Linux VM.

I am unable to create a file system on a large (> 2TB disk) virtual disk for a Linux VM.  I can create the disk, attach it to the VM, partition it with "parted", but I cannot run mkfs.ext4.  Details below.
    Hyper-V 2012 Core (w/ all Windows/Microsoft updates as of 4/19).
CentOS 6.4 VM w/ 4 virtual processors, 4GB RAM, and 3 dynamic drives:
    /dev/sda  100GB IDE dynamic vhdx
    /dev/sdb  75GB IDE dynamic vhdx
    /dev/sdc  10TB SCSI dynamic vhdx
Using parted, created 500GB partition on the 10TB drive (/dev/sdc1).
    (parted) select /dev/sdc
    Using /dev/sdc
    (parted) print
    Model: Msft Virtual Disk (scsi)
    Disk /dev/sdc: 11.0TB
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B
    Partition Table: gpt
Number  Start   End    Size   File system  Name                Flags
     1      1049kB  500GB  500GB               production_archive
    then run: mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdc1
repeating error on console from mkfs.ext4:
INFO: task mkfs.ext4:2581 blocked for more than 120 seconds
    "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
Runaway error in var/log/messages until my /var system filled up - 25G worth of it:
    -rw-------. 1 root root 25085329408 Apr 19 23:15 messages
Apr 19 17:39:28 nfs2 kernel: sd 4:0:0:0: [sdc] Sense Key : No Sense [current]
Apr 19 17:39:28 nfs2 kernel: sd 4:0:0:0: [sdc] Add. Sense: No additional sense information
    Apr 19 17:39:28 nfs2 kernel: hv_storvsc vmbus_0_13: cmd 0x93 scsi status 0x2 srb status 0x6
    Same problem happens when running "mkfs.ext4 -E lazy_itable_init=1 /dev/sdc1"

    Hi,
    Thank you for your post.
I am trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at this issue.

  • How to change color inside single item? [SOLVED]

I'd like to change background color inside item (on blue for ex.: see http://www.marussig.si/weblib/screen.jpg ) . The problem is that the block is multiline block but I have to change the color just on one line in one column. Is this possible? If I use set_item_propery syntaks, the whole item changes the color what I don't want to do.
    thanks for help!
