Changed Preferences to MANUAL - ipod STILL begins activity upon plugging in

Okay, this is absolutely infuriating. I have changed the ipod settings in itunes to do everything MANUAL that can possibly be set to MANUAL; however, the moment I plug in my ipod, the "Do not disconnect" text appears on the display, and it NEVER goes away as long as I've got it plugged in. I'm pretty sure it's charging during this time, but I don't know how to actually update the ipod from itunes, because the option to "Update ipod" in the "File" menu is grayed out.
Dell   Windows XP

Now, however, where it should say "eject ipod", it says "eject disc", and if I click it, it ejects my CD drive...?
but that's not normal.
it sounds like you might have a weird version of this problem (where Windows is confusing your ipod with a CD drive rather than a hard drive):
Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear
(which might explain why your "update ipod" menu command is grayed out too.)

ps: sorry Katrina! it took a while for me to make my first post (when the thread was still just the OP) ... got back to the the thread to see that discussion had been fast and furious in the meantime ...

  • Change iPod preferences with no iPod connected

In iTunes, how do you change "preferences" from auto-update of iPod to manual update without iPod being connected?

Correct me if I am wrong but I think the work-around for that is to start iTunes, select Preferences, leave Preferences window open, THEN connect iPod and wait 20 +/- seconds for iPod to connect, then select the iPod tab on Preferences and change to manual update.
Is that what you want to do, Paul?

  • Bought a new Ipod touch and the WiFi does not connect.  Tried Reset and total Restore, does not connect to Router on DHCP, tried Static manually and still can not get it to connect even though it registers as connected.

Bought a new Ipod touch and the WiFi does not connect.  Tried Reset and total Restore, does not connect to Router on DHCP, tried Static IP, Subnet, Router and DNS manually and still can not get it to connect even though it registers as connected.  Using Airport for router, latest firmware, no problems with Iphone 4 or Macbook Pro or any other internet devices.  After total Restore (factory settings) tried again, showed connected to router, but does not display "check" next to router but little rotating icon even though the wifi range signal shows connected at full strength and it says it is connected.  Just can't seem to get it to generate an IP.  Any solutions other than turning it on and off again?  Not a Merry Christmas morning.

Ok, so, a couple of things:  Denisefromwaleska and I have the exact same size/type/color iPod.  Now wishing I'd bought the black one maybe...
Second, Airport is an Express and I have a second one that I carry with me when I travel.  Tried to connect my Airport Express to the internet and could not although the iPod did recognize the router and tried to connect to the internet for some time, unlike my previous problem.  Updated firmware on my travel router, still could not connect to the internet.  Going to try to set up a manual Static IP on the travel router here in a few and conect through it although I predict the problem will persist. Back on the Christmas Present Airport Express router, it is back in play and working fine for all devices save the iPod.
Thanks again for all your help, hopefully I can get a solution in place soon,

I had mobile me (family plan) and I upgraded to icloud last night. My phone and ipad are using iclould fine, but when I go to the preference pane in MAC OSX it still comes up with the screen that has the button that says "move to icloud" .   If I hit that button it takes me to the mobile me find my iphone, then if I type my password it takes me to a page with a button that says Open icloud...which I do.....then it opens icloud. Seems to be ready to go but everytime I try to go to preferences it starts at the beginning all over again....anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Your signature says you have 10.6.1 - is this correct? iCloud won't work on that, it requires 10.7.2. (If your signature isn't correct, please amend it - it makes a considerable difference to some answers depending on what system you have.)

    - Go to settings>Store and sign out and sign into new account.
    NOTE
    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.

    iPod clickwheel   Windows XP

You can try the various options below, but if you cannot access the iPod you won't get the songs off of it. Try all the options as one may 'see' the iPod better than another. Make sure you start making backups in the future - they would have helped in this case.
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
YamiPod Software (Free: Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple & Free Method: (just to recover the song files – may not work on a Mac)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to manual transfer – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod
    10 - Click OK
-- The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes with its correct information
–-- This will take some time depending on your PC’s speed and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try again switching your update method to 'manual', detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
After recovering your Library, strongly consider developing a thorough and frequent backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • How can I get my installed plugins to show up in Logic after ive installed the plugin discs? ive tried changing the bit mode. it STILL doesn't work.???

I tried installing a program but when i open logic and scan the audio units, it doesnt come up. Even if i change the bit mode, it still doesnt show up. I even tried restarting my machine..Can anyone help me or give me some ideas.
i just wanna get this plugin to work.

Have you confirmed that the plug-in installed to one of the locations where Logic might find it? Most plug-ins go to /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components. Some (rarely) install to ~/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components (where "~" is your user folder). Look in both locations and see if the plug-in is actually there.
When installing plug-ins, if you are offered options as to what format to install, be sure to include Audio Units. Logic will not see other formats like VST, RTAS, AAX, TDM, etc. If you use other software that recognizes those formats, it's fine to install them too, just be sure you don't deselect Audio Units.
Finally, if you're sure the plug-in is installed to the right place, open the Audio Units Manager in Logic and check to see if the plug-in passed validation. Go to the main menu and choose Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio Units Manager. Check to see if your plug-in is listed there. If there's not a check mark next to it in the "Logic" column, that means it failed validation. If so, the "Compatibilty" column will tell you why. Keep in mind that if the AU is 32-bit, you have to launch Logic in 32-bit mode to see it here. Likewise, 64-bit plug-ins show up in the manager in 64-bit mode.

  • Why can't I change the duration of a still frame?

I am running Final Cut Express 3.5.1
When I try to change the duration of a still frame it generally snaps back to the existing duration rather than changing. Occasionally it will change but never to the duration I select which is ususlly :20 to :50 of a second. It sticks on a variety of durations between 1:20 and :05. I have tried both altering and rewriting the duration.I have tried restarting as well as all of the following methods:
1 Changing the duration in the User Preferences > Editing, still duration field.
2 Ammending the browser duration column .
3 Double clicking on the still to open it in the viewer and changing the duration field.
4 Draging the still into the timeline, control clicking and changing the duration in the drop down menu.
5 I also clicked on the still in the browser > edit > item properties but there was no timing tab available to select (as suggested on another posting.)

This project is just a short animation so every time I import the stills they are of the wrong duration so I try changing the duration by the other methods described previously, fail to be able to do that, erase everything from the project, restart and start again, initially with the preferences. So there's nothing for the still frames to conflict with. It's not the fact that there is a batch of stills that is the problem either as I keep experimenting with with single or small groups of stills in that context. I've also tried importing a variety of still formats into other projects. This is fairly new software. Could this be an incurable fault?

  • Change Duration of set of still clips

I'm trying to change the duration of 1,115 still photo clips in the timeline (about 2.2mb jpegs each).  After about 2.5 hours of effort to get them into the timeline I've selected them all and hit control D to highlight the duration thing in the middle of the screen.  I type in 46.45 so that all those clips will play back close to 24fps and it changes to 14 hours.  I tried typing in 2 minutes = 8 hours, then 10 minutes = 8 hours.  I don't get it.  No matter what number I type into the duration it changes by hours.
Oh yeah, I changed the import setting for still clips to the lowest possible amount of time and it still brought them into the timeline at 4 sec. each.
Help.  Is there some special way to get the duration to stay what you type into it?
I know I'm running FCPX on a bare bones system but it really shouldn't take two days to make a 45 second timelapse.
MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo 2.4 Ghz, 4GB RAM, Gforce 8600M GT

The default length for stills is settable in the FCP X  Preferences Window under the Edit tab.  I believe 4 sec is the number set as default when you got the program.  One way you might be able to do it is to select all the clips in the timeline (pictures that is), then make them into a new compound clip.  Then select the compound clip and hit COMMAND R (for the re-timing frame to pop up).  Drag the retiming handle at near the top right (2 small vertical bars) of the selected compound clip to the length of time you want.  I tried this with retiming video clips made into a compound clip and it works, so I am thinking it will probably also work with stills.  Hope this helps.

If my ipod was stolen, how can I figure outg if the find my ipod app is activated.

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it.

  • Change preference from script

Hi! I want to know how i can change preferences from the VB scripts? If there is a command from the ituneslib library for do this? or how i can change value into iTunesPrefs.xml file?
    thanks for the help

The iTunes SDK does not provide any functions to change preferences. You could try doing it using SendKey() to send keypresses, or using something like AutoIT to do keystrokes and mouse clicks... but that requires you to run iTunes in each account that needs its preferences changed.
I have done some direct updates to preferences by editing the preferences XML, but it isn't fun because it isn't documented anywhere that I can find. Once you find the right byte/bit to update in the preferences, it isn't a big deal, but find the right one is a pain.
Also, when Apple updates iTunes you have to reevaluate your script to see if it is still changing the right thing in the preferences file.
If you want to see an example of updating the prefernces file directly, you can download my script package:
    http://home.comcast.net/~teridon73/itunesscripts/index.html
The perl source code is included. Look at itunespreferencesfix.pl. Or here's a direct link to a version that works by itself (without the rest of my package):

  • I have updated my Apple ID, but iCloud under System Preferences on my iMac still shows the old Apple ID. How do I update it to show the new ID name? Can anyone help?

I've updated my Apple ID, but iCloud under System Preferences on my iMac still shows my old Apple ID. How do I update it to show the new Apple ID?

Do you mean you changed your existing apple id to a new email address, still associated to your existing apple id?
If that's the case, just click the sign out button in the icloud preferences, and sign in with the new email address.
If you're actually created an entirely new apple id with your new email address, you'll have to do some exporting/importing.
