Changed to "Securing shared disk: with accounts" and lost previous data?

I installed a TC in July and have been doing Time Machine backups to it ever since. Today, I decided to add File Sharing accounts using the Airport Utility. I created two accounts. The next time Time Machine ran, it failed on login. I reconfigured it to use one of the two new accounts, and (not surprisingly, in retrospect) it began a complete, new backup.
The Finder tells me that 150GB of the TC disk is already in use. I hope that's the space used by my former backups... but how do I find them? Whenever I try and open the TC in the Finder, I'm prompted for one of the new account/passwords, neither of which allows me to view any of the former data.
Is it possible to access data that was written to the TC disk prior to my switching to account-controlled file sharing?

Actually, it turns out it was still there and accessible. I went back to Airport Utility and switched "Securing shared disk" back to using a disk password, as before, and there was the "full" disk . . . containing my original sparseimage file, as well as a new Users folder and a Shared folder. The latter contained the sparseimage file from the new backup.
I hope that I can replace the new sparseimage file (in /Shared) with the original one (in /), and switch back to using accounts to control access to the TC disk.

  • Time Capsule: Files lost after Secure Shared Disk: with accounts

I Changed the Disks: Secure Shared Disk option to 'with accounts' on my Time Capsule and now all files are invisible. It looks the files must be still on the disks because of the amount of free/used bytes used that is displayed.
How can I restore the 'old' files?

Restore the old files by removing the accounts.. ie press and hold reset.. once you go back to a reset all files are available again anyway so the security is illusionary.
If you want to secure files encrypt them.
BTW the old airport utility would have warned you that what you were doing will stop access to your files.
Of course the latest toyland utility probably showed you nothing.
Never start accounts with files on the TC.. you should offload them.. create accounts then load them back.. to the illusion of security at least.

  • AirPort Disk Access Existing files when changing Secure Shared Disks with Accounts

    Hey, community;
I have a 1TB Disk which I was using on my Mac, then upon aquisition of an AirPort Extreme Base Station, plugged it into there. File sharing was fine when set to "AirPort Password" for Security settings, but when I changed to "Accounts" and set up accounts, the existing paritions were there... they just couldn't be accessed.
Tried finding the solution online, to no avail.
Just writing to say I've solved this! Once you set the Security type to "Accounts," folders now appear on your USB Drive, one for each user you set up, as well as a "Shared" folder.
I just dumped the existing contents of the drive into the "Shared" folder, and now everyone can access those original files.
I hope this helps someone out.

  • If I set up secure shared disks with accounts, can i still use the time machine backup feature.

I was setting up an account on the time capsule so I can have other people have their own private folder. My question is, Can I still back up my data on my time capsule by using time machine?

Sorry the account feature is irrelevant.. You do not want to use it.. you can migrate your data to your computer.. The account feature is not needed, required, useful or anything to do with restoring your files..
You use account access to stop everybody being able to see your files.. the problem is.. it is not itself secure.. so if i get hold of your TC I can delete your accounts with a soft reset and access all your files.. so it is useless.. don't bother using it.. ignore it.. !!
If you wish to have secure backups use the Time Machine Encrypt backup feature.

  • Secure Shared Disks: With a disk password - read only?

I would like my roommates to be able to access my hard-drive, but only read-only. I know I can set the allow guests setting on, and let them read-only that way, but I would also like for them to have to enter a password, so I am surprised I can't do both. Any ideas?

When the computer goes to make a backup I get the dialogue box which states that it cannot back up because the disk is a read only disk. It is 1T size and has plenty of room backing up most but not all of a 500 GB drive. Is there a way to move the files to a new 1.5T drive I have and have Time Machine recognize the new drive with all the saved data? If I simply drag the file from Time Machine to the new formatted Time Machine Drive (Extended - Journaled) it says the drive is not the correct format for a backup drive. Frustration abounds!
If I clone the drive using Disk Utility will I not also clone the problem which exists?
Whoa! Slow down. Try a +*Repair Disk+* on the existing drive, per #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

  • Time Capsule - Secured Shared Disk anomaly

    Hi,
Something quite worrying just happened and I'm unsure whether I can trust the TC to continue using it or whether I should just replace it. The TC is almost 2 years old and until now has reliably served as my DHCP router and Shared Disk with account. From Finder I attempted to mount my private shared folder as normal but the login details were refused. "Connect As" was showing in Finder which shouldn't appear when the account details are stored in Keychain. But sure enough in Keychain the connection details had vanished too. In Airport Utility the Shared Disk Account was nowhere to be found either with only the usual Data folder for Time Machine still visible. I mounted the Data folder and found inside a Users folder containing my missing files - around 400GB of my life's treasure! Thank the lord I seem to be able to access my files and am presently copying everything over to an internal disk on the Mac pro. Oddly enough what was once a restricted access folder requiring username and password now seems to be totally unsecured.
I share the TC over MobileMe so I can access it on the move. Could there have been a MobileMe event which caused this anomaly? I can't understand how the account data could have been lost, indeed moved inside the Data folder and the keychains appear to have been deleted on all the Macs in the house which use the same MobileMe account.

Are you saying that was the only copy you have?
If so, count yourself as extremely lucky. Do yourself a favor and begin doing regular backups immediately. At the very least, back up your important, irreplaceable stuff. But do yourself another favor and back up your entire system.
That may be a bit tricky, as many backup apps (including Time Machine) won't back up a network drive, such as a Time Capsule. See Kappy's post on Basic Backup, complete with links to the web sites of each product. One or more of those will likely work for that.
While you're at it, make another set of backups, of the important stuff at least, and get it off-site, so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, and direct lightning strike on your power lines. A portable hard drive is good for that, as are CDs/DVDs. Any of them can be taken to your safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, etc. And there are services that let you do backups over the internet; since you're a MobileMe subscriber, you can use Apple's Backup app to back up some things to your iDisk automatically.

I forgot the security questions and also the password (and even account id, sequrity questions,... becouse I didn't use for a long time) for security info email of my apple id. Now I want to change the security info email with another. What Should I do?

Even if I'm not despertate, creating a new Id is good Idia. But I think I must create another email address also since I can't use the first email adress as an apple id for the new one. That means I should check everyday the new email address also, that is making life complex. Better to try the 1st solution. Thank you very much.

No, it's done on the computer, it's just done on the web and not through iTunes. I guess you could do it on the iPhone, but it would be easier to do on the computer.
Just go to the site linked above, then click on the big blue button and fill out the neccessary information.

My family shared an Itunes account and now i'm moving out and have created a new account solely for myself. Is there a way to transfer my previous purchases on the family account to my new account?

In order to continue to play and sync the music you purchased with your old account, you'll need to authorize your new computer/iTunes library to do so.  You can do this by choosing Store -> Authorize This Computer and then entering in your old account credentials.
That's all you should need to.  Then just create your own account and start purchasing and using it the same you have with the old one.

Help, I installed parallel and windows, and opened videos (on an external hard disk) with windows, and now cannot open them with Mac, and use i movies.  How do I reverse this?

Paragraphs help the reader, just saying.
What are you actually trying to do? Why do you need "DVD size" folders if you're creatng an Archive on an external hard drive?
Also, I understand burning folders instead of individual photos or albums gives you more space on a DVD.
It makes no difference at all.
How can I keep the captions on my photos (not events) when I print or transfer to a new folder?
You can export while writing the metadata to the file in most cases.
Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.
HD? Another HD? You use HD there in a way that makes no sense. What's the point of 'DVD size'?
I also thought I should download future photos to my Canon programming that comes with EOS cameras and edit and then decide which photos to save to iPhoto library and which to save only to my archival HD?
Does this have any relation to the previous questions? You know you can delete from iPhoto, right?
You're somewhat confused and you need to
    1. Decide what exactly you want to do
    2. Then go about it.
If I understand you correctly - and there's no guarantee that I do -  the easiest thing is to bring all your Photos into iPhoto and do everything from there.
You can have an archive on an external disk, you can sort and select and edit with or via iPhoto
    Regards
