Changes from iPhoto 5?

My iLife 06 should arrive on Wednesday. I was wondering if there are any changes to the book feature. Namely:
1. Once you place a photo on a page, can you grab the photo and realign it -- move it up, down, left and right?
2. Can you customize layouts -- design your own pages?
These features are available in Apeture -- I'm hoping they provide them in the new iPhoto.

Help in changing from iphoto to Bridge CS5

I am a mac user with an imac and a macbook pro and have added PS CS5. My OS is 10.6.8 on my laptop. How do I set or switch from iphoto to Bridge CS5 to store/catalog my photos? Any help or tutorial would be appreciated.

How do I set or switch from iphoto to Bridge CS5 to store/catalog my photos?
There is a significant difference between Bridge and iPhoto. Bridge is a file browser and reflects the contents of the folders you point it to. iPhoto uses a central library to store the images in By default this library is hidden and only shows as a Package.
You first have to decide to use either iPhoto or Bridge as main application to manage your photo's, it is very hard to mix the 2 applications.
If you want Bridge for this you should create a new folder or folder structure where you can place the files in. For instance in your pictures folder but it can be located anywhere in your user account.
Then go to the pictures folder on your Mac (best use column mode for Finder windows) and choose the iPhoto Library file. When you use right mouse click menu on the library icon it shows an option called 'show package content'
This opens a new window and reveals the content of the library.
Now search for the folder called masters (or originals as I believe they called it in earlier versions) in list.
If you open this folder there will be a folder for each year you have add photo's to iPhoto.
In here are the original sized pictures nested.
Best way is just grab the year folders and be sure to copy them (instead of move, otherwise your originals will also be removed from iPhoto) to the new created folders where you want to point Bridge to.
After done point Bridge to a year folder and in the menu view choose 'show items from subfolders'. This will reveal all pictures in this year folder and starts caching them.
After caching is done you can choose to leave them in date folders as the have been created by iPhoto or start batch renaming and let Bridge get the shot date from Exif, etc etc. Organize, rename and add metadata keywords to the files the way you like.
If you use Photodownloader to import the new shot files you can point that to the wanted folder to be placed in.
To many options to explain.
Be sure to have a Back Up and you can test what ever you like

Timing changes from iPhoto to iDvd

I made a slideshow in iPhoto5 with precise timing as far as music to photos. On export to iDVD5 to enable burning to a dvd, the timing has changed. It's just a little 'off.' Is there a workaround?

If you export your iPhoto slideshow w/sound as a QT movie and then import it into iMovie you can select the movie in the timeline and use the Advanced->Extract menu option. That will extract the audio and put it in the audio track below the video track. Then adjust as necessary and close your iMovie project.
Next open the iMovie project package, Control-click on the file and select "Show package contents" in the Contextual menu. Navigate down in the package to the Shared Movies/iDVD folder. Select the movie file in there and drag into your open iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones that may be there.
That should give you a properly times slideshow.

I never upgraded iphoto and now it is too late to upgrade to life 11. I just downloaded iphoto9.5.1. how do i replace iphoto 8.1.2 with the new one?

- are you running Mavericks and want to upgrade to iPhoto '11? - if that is it then purchase iPhoto '11 in the App store

- Are you running an older OS and want to move to iPhtoo '11 on it? - If that is the case then You have to purchase an iLife '11 DVD - Amazon and eBay are potential sources

Metadata missing from iPhoto

I've just been forced to change from iPhoto to the Photo app and can I say I'm less than impressed. It is so much more difficult to navigate to start with. Half my photos have come across without their metadata such as titles. I spent hours sorting my photo library and naming photos and now I have photos that are missing everything. Is there any way to get it back? Why did this happen to some and not all? Very disappointed that the transfer wasn't seamless. Now I suppose I'll be spending hours again trying to relabel everything. Any solutions?

You weren't forced. Just launch iPhoto and keep using it if you want to.

Exporting named photos from iPhoto to MY choice in Files?

I am completely confused about the changes from iPhoto 09 to iPhoto 11. I go through my photos after the RAW files are downloaded from my camera, cull the dreck, rename the ones to keep, then export them in TIFF with names to the folder of my choice. Or at least that's what I used to be able to do!
I have tens of thousands of photo files in my MAC. And I don't really relish a whole new learning curve just because I have purchased a new MAC with a new OS. I need to be able to pluck the files from the individual country, then the city, then the photoshoot and import them into Lightroom before they get exported again in a corrected form to upload to my agencies.
This newest version of iPhoto does not bring up the ability to scroll through the Finder and assign the named and exported photos to specific folders. Why? And is there a way to reset or fine-tune this so that I regain that function?
Assistance is appreciated because I edit hundreds of photos in each session and I am tearing my hair out with this nonsense of only being 'allowed' to export to Pictures (gosh -- that's helpful when there are thousands of items in Pictures!), or Desktop or Recently Used.

I have only had this new Mac for a week and I simply followed my usual procedure. I'm now wondering if I should just let Lightroom import the RAW files from my camera, do all of the editing and discarding over there, and so forth.
It's funny, after I posted that I looked at my own question to the forum and realised that I was creating a redundancy that was unnecessary.
My previous MAC was manufactured in 2009, so my iPhoto in there was the 2009 version.
Ah well -- guess I got my answer in a sort of self-administered smack on the hand manner!

Dragging image selection from iphoto browser Aperture hangs

Wanting to change from IPhoto to Aperture for my Photo library and wanting to be a bit more organised i tried (as a test to begin with) dragging 50 images into a particular folder in Aperture 2.1.4 from the iphoto browser. At this time it has been working 5 hours. Activity Monitor shows a continuos but variable activity, i also see the importing indicator on Aperture indicating activity
I suppose i can force Quit but will it destroy those photos but that would leave me with the question as to why its not working

That's a good question. I just checked the camera and it does auto-rotate when I'm viewing images in the playback mode on the camera. Do you think that affects the import? I noticed that it makes two copies of all images beyond the first one imported. In other words, rotated or not, the first image I drag from iPhoto Browser will import as an Original (just one instance), yet the following ones will always be two images. I just drag from iPhoto Browser to the bottom panel of the Split View and I get two images.

How can I recover from a Botched BATCH DATE CHANGE in iPhoto?

Short Story: Intending to change the date for one photo I managed to change the dates for all 8,525 images in my iPhoto08 library to the SAME DATE!! I found that the original creation dates were saved in the in the Modified field that appears in the Photo Info Window / File metadata subsection. I would like some help figuring out how to set the Date Created to this File Modified Date that appears in the Photo Info Window.
GORY DETAILS:
I used iPhoto08/ Photos menu / BATCH CHANGE... /“Set DATE to 20100723 1:20:54 PM” with “Modify original files” checked. iPhoto changed all 8,525 images to the same date.
I now realize I should have used Photos menu / Adjust Date and Time ... But the damage was already done. Unfortunately there was no Edit menu / Undo for this operation. ALL 8,525 images have the same date. I checked in the the iPhoto Information sidebar--same date all images.
Next, as a test, I dragged an image to the desktop and opened it in Graphic Converter7.0.3. The same date “20100723 1:20:54 PM” appeared in the Image Browser List /”Date Created”, “Date Modified”, “Date Captured” metadata fields.
The following appeared in the Graphic Converter

Actually it's my Mom and Dad's iPhoto library containing all the kids and grand kids pictures, family trips, important events, everything. There is no backup. I feel as if I have tipped over a file cabinet containing all our photos. Our “date and event” organized 8,525 image iPhoto library was now as useful as a giant shoebox. On second thought, a shoe box full of real photo prints would be more useful than my iPhoto library because the prints would have the print date stamped on them.
At this point feeling desperate I closed my eyes and said a quick prayer to Saint Rita - Patron Saint of the Impossible.
I returned to iPhoto .................and noticed the Show Photo Info MENU item in the Photo Menu.
I selected it.
And Low and behold,
in the Photo Info WINDOW,
under the Meta data File SUBSECTION, the correct photo creation date appeared -->" Modified: 20071002 05:46:07 PM" I checked different photos ... They all had different FILE MODIFIED dates. These dates were/are the old creation dates! My prayers were answered: THANK YOU SAINT RITA!
But now I am really stumped! This File Modified Date seems to be some kind of external metadata that is indexed or keyed to each image. How is this metadata stored in the iPhoto library? How can I access this File Modified date? I now turn to you GREAT iPhoto WIZARDS. Pray tell, how can I set the “Creation Date to the file Modified Date” that appears in the Photo Info Window as a (scriptable?) batch process.
I am on my knees for this one...please help. we have iphoto11 but afraid to upgrade to it. until i know more i don't want to loose this Modified Date metadata.

Photo Info Window. open up the iphoto library package and take a look at
the .xml file -- ModDate is used everywhere. hoping to export this data and merge/join it to
each image.

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.

2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done. 3 - however, if you get the navigation window

that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:

I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:

NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds.

if i clear the book so that it is all blanks and then try to load in the pictures i have it loses the chronology of the pictures that i had established in the album.
is there a way to import photos into an ibook template and keep the original order of the photos without having to do them one at a time?
also, is there a way to insert a photo rather than just dragging it? i have tried the cut and paste funciton but it doesn't seem to work, the target site doesn't seem to register with iphoto.

Photos are added to book in chronological order. So if you want to add them to a book in the order you have placed them manually in an album do the following:
1 - select all the photos in the album.
2 - use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option as shown here. Select any date and add 1 minute between photos.
3 - select just one photo from the album and create a book from it.
4 - in the book click on the Options button ➙ Book Settings button and make sure the checkbox for Auto-layout pages is unchecked.
5 - drag the album with your book photos onto the book icon and they will be imported into the Photos tray of the book in your pre-determined order but not into the pages themselves.

Open the file with Preview, type Command + i to bring up the Info pane and it's color mode and profile will be listed as shown here:
To change the color mode to CMYK you'll need a 3rd party image editor like Photoshotp or GraphicConverter to do it. Why do you need CMYK?

How to change the time of slides imported from iphoto - in bulk

I am preparing a slideshow and but I would like to use iMovie and then burn the finished product using iDVD. I have 420 slides in an iPhoto album, and I would like them each to be 7 seconds long. When I import them from iPhoto, they seem to be set at 1 second each? I can change them individually, but there must be a way to select them and change them all at once. There is probably a way to set transitions in bulk like this too? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Copying photos from iPhotos to an external hard drive, changes the dates the photo was created

I have the odd query where when I copy photos from iPhoto in to any other folder, whether it's on the mac deskstop or an external hard drive, that the 'date created' on the some of the photos is changed from the date the photo was actually taken to some random date. This is sometimes the date that I move the photos and sometime a date seemingly randomly selected between the date when the photo was taken and then date I copied the photos.
It doesn't make a different if I copy or cut and paste each file, and if I select all photos from a single event and copy then all in one go, some photos keep the correct data and others don't.
Most of these photo of of my baby, so the exact date take is very important ofr reference. Current I have a 100 odd photos taken over a few weeks all with the same 'created date'. I have no idea if she was 10 week or 20 weeks old at the time.
Any ideas? It's really frustrating me.

Although it does not affect this do you have a default managed library or a (strongly not recommedned) referenced library - (The iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" has been unchecked) which is strongly NOT recommended.

Some additional efforts you can try:
Go to the System/Sharing preference pane and make sure Remote Apple Events is checked.
If it is, uncheck it and then recheck and try ordering again.
