Changes in metadata written to .xmp by 1 computer not seen as changed on another

I make a change in the metadata for some RAW and Jpeg files in LR5.7 and they get written into the .xmp sidecars and jpeg files on a networked drive. If I have another computer running LR5.7 and its catalog points to the same photos on the networked drive then that LR does not always show the metadata status of those same files as "changed on disk" like it should. If I manually read the metadata from those files, then the changes show up. Any ideas?

Two possibilities:
- LR can be pretty slow in updating metadata status. I've seen it take ten minutes or more.
- There may be an incompatibility between LR and your particular network volume that trips up LR's heuristics for determining when metadata has "changed". Such incompatibilities between apps and network drives are not uncommon.

Hi all,
Does anyone know if there is a way in LR (1.3.1) to filter so that you only see files that have metadata changes that have not yet been written to XMP files?
I would like such a feature since I could then "batch" write all of my changes by selecting all of the filtered photos and pressing Ctrl-S.

Ah, is that so? I figured that all would be written. So you're saying that if I have 100 photos in a LR database and I have made metadata updated (ratings, keywords, developments etc) on 10 of those and then select all 100 only 10 will be written? Sounds wise when I think of it ;)

How do I select ONLY those images that need the metadata written? I've got 40,000 images, change a number of keywords for different groups - add, delete, rename, whatever. I DON'T want to have to save metadata for all 40,00 files 'cause LR is already so slow... And doing a save metadata for every group I change is painful 'cause it takes foreve just to update even a few files. I've got the preference turned on to automatically write changes to xmp, but I'm not working with anything that has sidecar files...
I want to be able to JUST select those images that need the metadata written out, then let it spend all night writing the changes.

Thanks Lee... But, that doesn't appear to be what I'm seeing. I've got autowrite on (at least as far as I know I do), but I can watch a set of files where I've made changes to keywords and even after all activity has stopped there'll be files with the metadata indicator showing they haven't been synchronized with the disk.... AND, I can go to Bridge and open one of these files and see that the keywords haven't been updated on the disk......
So, even though I have autowrite on, I can't be SURE the changes actually got written. And last night I selected everything and did a "Save metadata"... Just over 12 HOURS later it was at the 3% completed... This was on a catalog of approximately 35,000 images.
This is why I'd like to be able to just select those images needing updating. Hopefully, it'd be faster.

How can I make metadata saved to xmp file stay saved?

When a raw file badge shows that the file has been changed, I use Metadata Save to File & for the large majority of my images, the badge goes away and Metadata Status Changed does not show the file. For some of my files, however, the Save to File command doesn't work properly. If I am only displaying files with changes, the file briefly disappears, then returns. Even if I go to Windows Explorer and delete the xmp file, then again Save metadata to file, it pops up again with the badge saying it needs to be saved. Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong, or is there a bug? I'm using Lightroom 4.3 64 bit on Windows 7.

As has been mentioned, following metadata save with metadata read is a work-around.
Note: you can see exactly, everything, the difference between metadata in catalog and metadata in xmp on disk, using ChangeManager's "Compare Catalog to Disk" feature; hint: choose 'No Exclusions' to see the "inconsequential" differences too. Reminder: this does a bunch of stuff involving xmp file copying and saving xmp / reading metadata / restoring afterward... - which presents lots of hoops to jump through, at first, in Windows, and forever, on Mac, but if you tough it out, you will get the pot of result gold at the end of the hoop rainbow...

Adobe provides a "FileInfo SDK" to create own custom panels.
For pre CS4 please see the download "XMP Custom File Info for pre-CS4 products" in the fileInfo section at the end of our SDK webpage: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/xmp/
For CS4 the FileInfo dialog is now flash based and the SDK has significantly changed. Please check the "FileInfo SDK 4.4". The new SDK also has a way to create a panel with limited programming skills. Just look for the generic panel which is located in the tools folder.

Get/Set metadata set by XMP Custom Panels in InDesign CS

I am using XMP Custom Panels to set metadata unique to my application in InDesign CS. That works well. I would like to be able to retrieve or modify those properties with a script.
Can you identify the object that would contain the metadata set by XMP Custom Panels and the properties or methods I would use to access them?

Thanks for the confirmation. This is a serious and surprising limitation. And if Bridge isn't going to handle complex types properly, it should at least not go ahead and stick invalid data in the field, as it does now.
I guess the only way to update complex types is to use a metadata template, or another tool.

XMP Files from MAC Not Reading On PC

My question is two-fold, so I apologize that this is long, but it will be best with the backstory:
I shoot Raw on a Canon 5DMIII and import my images into Lr5 on my PC as CR2 files. I am beginning to work with an editor for the post production of my images and upload my files to her via Dropbox. In effort to keep the files as small as possible (and upload/download times shorter), I export my images as DNGs. Specifically, I ensure the 'Use Lossy Compression' option is checked and the 'Embed Original Raw File' is unchecked. I then resize the image to 2000 pixels on the Long Edge and the overall file is under 1MB.
She then imports the DNG files into her iMac for editing also in Lr5. Prior to my exporting, I will edit a few images as sneak peeks for my clients, flag them as a 'pick' and code them as 'red'. When she imports my DNGs, she can see the 'red', but she cannot see the flagged images. Fine, this is something I can live without. She does her editing, also flagging them as a pick and coding them red. She then exports as the original file.
She then uses ExifTool, opens the terminal application and write in: "exiftool -xmp -b -w xmp -r", drags in the DNG files and exports the XMPs. She then sends the XMP files back to me, I place them into my folder with my original RAW files, tell my PC to 'replace' the XMP files that are already in the folder. Then in Lr5, I highlight all my files and select 'Read Metadata From File'.
Now, initially, nothing happens. I am unable to see any images flagged or coded red. However, I do see the 'attention' icon (I'm sure that is not the right name for it) on the upper right corner of the images she has edited when in the library module. If I click on it, it tells me that the MetaData has conflicting information and do I want the file or catalog to be primary. I click on the 'file' option and only then do I see her edits, including the 'red' coding (but not flagged as 'pick').
Part 1 Questions: Why when I am instructing it to 'Read the MetaData From File' is it not automatically picking up her edits? Am I doing something incorrectly when I put the XMPs back in the original folder with the RAW images and have the XMPs replace the originals? Is it normal for the 'pick' flags to not transfer?
Part 2 Questions: When she edits my images, she creates a virtual copy and creates one color and one b+w of each image for my clients. As such, she sends me back two XMP files for one image. How do I get these 2nd XMPs to map to the virtual copy within my library, as I am only creating the virtual copy of an image once I know it is one she selected for the final gallery. If I create a virtual copy of an image she edited after-the-fact, the b+w XMP cannot locate it.

I never tried this, but I'm pretty sure that with DNG files, Lightroom will ignore xmp files, even when you instruct Lightroom to "Read Metadata from File". Lightroom expects all the metadata to be in the DNG file, not in the xmp file.
Pick flags, as far as I know, are never written to xmp file; nor are they written to DNG files.
If you're going to make this transfer procedure work, you need to do it by either (a) embedding the metadata in the DNG file and send those back and forth; or (b) use RAW and xmp and then sending the xmp files back and forth (plus I guess you have to transfer the original RAW once to your editor)

Adding Metadata to folders/ Searching Drive for Keywords not just one folder - Bridge CC 2014

I'm trying to add Metadata to folders not the files. The files in the folders already have metadata and in one folder we have 360 images of the same thing. When I do a keyword search I don't want to go though 20+ sets of 360 duplicate files. I need to do keyword searching for folders. When I have tried adding keywords to the folders I get "the file cannot store xmp metadata" warning. I tried clearing the cache on the file because it said that would help in another forum but it did not help. Does any one know how to fix this? I don't know why we could not assign descriptions or keywords to folders. It would be very useful!! Some one please help!
as of 2/24/2015 - This is still unanswered. I want to be able to find files throughout my whole drive based on the metadata tags I put on all my 100,000+ images. These 100,000+ images are dispersed thought out multiple folders. I need to be able to find all the files with specific Metadata tags in common but bridge will not let me search outside of one defined folder? HELP!

The problem could be one or more from a long list. When you run your movie in Test Movie... do you get any errors? If you are using the timeline, is your first section 13 seconds long? Some of your navigation at the top seems to work, but some doesn't, so it's hard to tell what is supposed to happen.
It would help a great deal to see the actual .fla file that you are using.

"Network settings have be changed by another application" stuck in loops

I have the exact problem as others with Network System Preferences saying that the settings have been changed by another application. The message goes into a loop that can only be stopped with a Force Quit of the Preferences. I also have the Airport not connecting at start-up without choosing the Network Name from the Airport Pull down menu. I also think it may have started with the last Security upgrade and Java upgrade. I have used the airport utility to reconfig the base station. I discovered a system keychain with a password for the airport that my normal passwords would not open to show what it's password was. I have done many disk permissions and verifications. Any ideas? I would think if this is a Security update error, that Apple would be aware of it by now and post a repair. I have followed some threads on this issue but would rather wait for an Apple fix. There appears to be no way to contact Apple in customer support.

You will have to re-configure all your network settings since deleting these files will cause them to be returned to defaults.

I suspect the salesperson that told you that meant your online account with your carrier...have you tried logging into your carrier account online? To do this will require the sim number on your sim card, as well as the phone's IMEI number...you get the sim number off the sim card & the IMEI number, for the phone, is printed on the box.

A few months ago on the Technet Gallery, I submitted this custom control to be used on SCSM console forms. The purpose of the control is to eliminate the "This item cannot be updated because it has been changed by another user or process" error
message that we all have seen at least once (a day :) ).
The details are in the gallery description (along with installation instructions for existing forms and your own custom forms).
Here's a "short" description (nothing I ever post here is short :) ): This is a custom control that can be applied to an SCSM form like the Service Request form or Windows Computer form or your own custom form built with the authoring tool or Visual
Studio. When you click "OK" or "Apply" on the form, this control scans the form and Service Manager's database for any changes to the object you have open. If a property that _you_ have changed on the form was _also_ changed in the CMDB
(by a workflow or another user), this control will present a dialog box letting you know what happened. It will also let you choose which value to keep (yours, theirs, or the original value).
Just as importantly (and important in a greater percentage of cases), if a workflow changes a "background" property (like FirstAssignedDate) while you have the form open and you click OK, the control will detect the change and allow the form submission
to go through while keeping your changes and the FirstAssignedDate change that the workflow made. You won't get an error message or even a warning. And most importantly, you won't lose your changes.
That's where the "optimistic" part of the control's name comes from. It applies optimistic concurrency control to SCSM forms, while also providing an anti-collision interface for you to use so you no longer lose any of your changes.
Furthermore, this control will work on related items that are opened in memory; for example, the activities on a Service Request. So if you change an activity's title while the workflow engine sets it in progress, you won't get an error. The activity will
be in progress and will get your new title when you click OK or Apply.
Lastly, (and I admit this part is getting into the deep inner workings of console forms) if your form loads a sub projection at run time (to the root object) this control will detect the load and treat that sub projection as if it were apart of the original
form all along.

My Network settings are being changed by another program??

When i open up system preferences>network an alert window pops up to say "your network settings have been changed by another program"...so naturally i click the 'o.k' button to get rid of it, but it immediately pops up again.
So its impossible to make changes in my network settings because it'll keep popping up, meaning the only way to close system preferences is to force quit.
What could this other program be? could it be my ISP (virgin media) messing about with my settings?
so until i can fix my problem i cant even change any of the settings in the 'network' panel of 'system preferences'.......and you guys ideas to fix this would be appreciated!!

This recently happened to me. Go to System Prefs, Security. Click on Require Password to Unlock each secure system preference. That should do it. After you fix it, go in to security prefs again to uncheck it, or you will have to enter password each time you want to change any system prefs.

You are right, but how could i send it to Apple? when the phone company first replaced my iphone they had in stock alots of iphones and they just sent mine back to Apple and gave me a new one, so all i did is to give them my phone, but now how could i sent it to Apple? and i cant send it by myself, and the store wont do that, its a lost for them.. so sending it to Apple wasnt an option from the begining.
and for the record, i dont think the store where i bought it is an authorized shop.. its just a store who boughts phone's from Apple in a low price and sells it in much more money..
