Changes to iMovie

Why would you take a good product then completely stuff it up!.
Imovie was a really good program for us average computer users and it did good things.
Why on earth didn't the new version ADD to the program rather than move everything around to different menus.
I don't have the time to re learn a program I spent a lot of time mastering.
It also seems to me that a lot of simple features are now more complicated eg editing sound and removing sound from video clips.
It is now no longer a useable program with our primary school students.
It was a very useable program.
As a school that was 100% Mac really sad now heading towards 100% PC.
It's just so hard to defend when issues like the new iMovie occur.

Truly, I have to agree. I was told by the Apple rep at the local shop that the updates in iMovie were quite good, I looked at it in the store, but did not pay close enough attention to the disaterous evvect it would have on my previosly created work.
None of my titles are there, none of my nifty edits are there, transitions are all gone.
Honestly, this new version of iMovie in iLife stinks. I recommend staying away from it. I also found that Leopard has blow out my score software Finale.
so I'm forced to put all my work on another drive, wipe my main drive, and reload all my software just to get RID of Leopard.
What's with you Apple...I used to look forward to your products, now I fear your work.
You've taken AWAY features and made my job harder. I would really like my money back from this lame software too, after I reboot everything, at least 12 hours of work.
Not buying another Apple computer until you get your act together, and I have supported you since the LC, currently a G5 quad, 4 display owner.

Please check Help >> System Info to find your catalog's location. Close Organizer. Go to this location and within the catalog folder, rename the thumbs.5.cache file to say thumbs.5.cache.old.
Now relaunch Organizer and let the thumbnailing complete. You should get your thumbnails back in no time.

  • How do I change my imovie to upload from my external hard drive?

I recently moved all of my photo and movie files onto an external hard drive. I was able to make my iphoto read from my external hard drive but can not change my imovie to do the same... tips?

iMovie has only access to 'Mac'/hfs formatted drives.
in Finder, select the connected drive, hit cmd-i/right click, select Info and look what it says about format.
pretty sure, it says fat32 ...

  • Overriding automatic time changes on iMovie

I am trying to get my iMovie images and music to change together. iMovie will often override the time I input to match the two together. Unfortunately it is sometimes wrong.
For example, I want an image to change at about 1.35 seconds. When I put in 1.3, imovie changes it to 1.2. If I put in 1.4, imovie changes it to 1.5.
It "thinks" that is the right setting, so it is changing it for me. I bought a mac because I was tired of micros&*ft "thinking" it knew what was best for me.
How do I override the auto time change feature and put in the times I want?
    Thanks.

I want an image to change at about 1.35 seconds. When I put in 1.3, imovie changes it to 1.2. If I put in 1.4, imovie changes it to 1.5.
The image duration has to be entered in the Inspector as seconds and frames, not as a decimal. So, for example, if you are using the NTSC format each second is comprised of 30 frames (in reality, 29.97 frames). So if you want the image to be one and a half seconds you enter it as 1:15, which is one second and 15 frames. You can enter the time up to a maximum of x number of seconds plus 29 frames, such as 1:29 - you can't enter, say, 3:35 as that will actually represent 4 seconds and 5 frames and should be entered as 4:05 (note that a colon separates the numbers, not a decimal point).
Likewise with PAL projects which have 25 frames per second. For one and a half seconds you would enter 1:12 or 1:13 - not 1.5
It may help if you go to iMovie (in the menu) and click on Preferences. In the General tab in the window that opens, check (tick) the box against "Display time as HH:MM:SS:Frames". I think it's in the same location in iMovie '09 - I'm working in iMovie '11.

  • How do i change an iMovie file back to its original form?

I have recently made a project on iMovie for my Duke Of Edinburgh challenge. I was trying it out and it was working. But when i tried putting on to youtube, the site told me that it must be a different form i.e. .MOV. so i went and changed it from .rcproject to .MOV and then posted it to youtube. I then deleted it from youtube to try to edit it a bit more; but my laptop went flat. Once I turned my computer back on, I tried opening the project, but it still is not opening. What do I do? Please help me, this project is due in for tomorrow!

You don't need to do that. Please post a screenshot that shows what you mean. Be careful not to include any private information.
Start a reply to this message. Click the camera icon in the toolbar of the editing window and select the image file to upload it. You can also include text in the reply.

  • Title setting change in iMovie HD 6

I recently upgraded from iMovie HD 5 to 6. I was in the middle of working on a movie when I did so. Bad move. I had been using the Music Video title for the movie, which placed the text flush left and close to the bottom of the image area. Now, when I add new titles, the position defaults instead to be indented from the left and bottom.
Is this something anyone else has noticed, or could it be something on my system? I have tried changing the font, and it doesn't have any effect. Any workaround besides returning to iMovie HD 5?
    powerbook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Could it be that in iMovie HD5 you were using the Music Video title with the QT Margins checkbox checked?
This would move the title over to the left.
There does not appear to be the equivalent option in HD 6.
By the way, the titles that are very near the left edge, or any edge of the screen will often be clipped when the video is played on a TV because they fall outside the "Title Safe" area.
For more info on this you might visit this page:

  • IMovie 09 doesn't save changes to iMovie 08 project - Help

After having issues with trying to export my project in iMovie 08 I have just installed iMovie 09 but when I make changes (eg, Use the map of the World to display our travel) and close iMovie 09 down, the changes aren't saved.
Also, I tried to copy and paste the project into a new one and it selects the movies, pictures & transitions but not the audio files. Can this be done? When I try to duplicate the project I get an error saying that I don't have the permissions to do it although I am the author and administrator.
    Pls Help.
PS, my first Mac, my first movie project, my first grey hairs.

This month a brand new version of Final Cut (named Final Cut Pro X) will be released by Apple. It will retail for $US299 and will remain as a fully professional product - but now available at a reasonable price for the prosumer and general user (google final cut pro x).
Your camera definitely should work with iMovie. I viewed a YouTube video earlier today that was shot with the Nikon Coolpix L110 and (clearly) edited in iMovie (not sure if it was '09 or '11). It was this one:

Possibly there is a glitch with iMovie. Try deleting the preference file. Close iMovie, then in Finder locate the file named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist" in your User (Home) folder Library/Preferences. Drag the file to the Desktop. When opened, iMovie will rebuild the .plist file with the default settings which can be changed if desired in iMovie's menu item iMovie>Preferences.
If all works OK, drag the original .plist file to the Trash. The file can become corrupted in some circumstances, such as when iMovie quits unexpectedly or is Force Quit. Deleting the file will not harm existing Events or Projects but may fix iMovie's odd behaviour.
It will be well worth upgrading to iMovie '11 - it has many new and enhanced features and can be purchased from the Mac App Store at a very reasonable price ($AUD17.99)

PS If possible, try your camera with iMovie at an Apple retail outlet. If it works there, then there is something amiss on your Mac. Perhaps try a different User Account on your Mac.

  • Color changes in iMovie HD

    Hi Friends,
I bought a new eMac G5 a few months ago and am now in the process of editing my first movie. The material was filmed with a DV Camcorder while doing some diving. As you might know, once you go below 30ft, the red as well as the yellow color spectrum gets filtered out by the water. When I was still using a PC I was able to simply turn up the red and yellow levels of the material and achieve near natural color saturation in my movies. How do I go about doing this in iMovie HD. So far I hav e only found the option of changing colors in "Effects", but that does not allow me to turn up the red values (only blue, green, ...) . Any ideas???
    Thanks for your help,
    Mike

    Hi micheal,
iM has just very basic pic-controls... for 2.50$ you get a nice plug-in, have a look here:

  • How do I change an iMovie's project thumbnail?

I have exported my iMovie 11 project several times now and have uploaded it successfully. But I am not at all happy with the thumbnail or still the file has settled on to use as its thumbnail. So now that I've exported a still frame from iMovie via MPEG Streamclip and have the frame I would like to use as tht thumbnail, how or where do I place it, attach it, or whatever in order for that to be what one sees under the "Click here/arrow to Play" in the center.
To be specific I am uploading a mp4 to Kickstarter.com. I really need this to be right; don't want to settle on some random frame selected by who? what? The app?

    please help.

  • Changing my iMovie

    Hello there,
Rather an odd one for an '09 iMovie forum.
Unfortunately I don't get on with iMovie '09 - I miss the scrubber bar and frame by frame editing possibilities of iMovie HD 6.0.3.
So what I'd like to know is, how could I get iMovie HD onto my newer laptop (MacBook running 10.5.8 with 2 GHz intel core duo), I have it on my older eBook (1.25 Ghz Power PC G4 running 10.3.9).
Can I just deleted all references to '09 and cpy it over?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dan

    I feel the same way!
Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.
Delete iLife 9. Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife 6 install disks.
Now re-install iLife 9. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.
Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.

  • Please HElp!  Won't save  changes in Imovie

I am currently working on an iMovie. When I preview the finished movie in iMovie it appears as if everything I have done is correct. However, when I burn it through iDVD there are errors. Errors that occur: music and voices playing on the next pictures and gaps in music. I have tried sharing the movie as a Quick time file and then burning in iDVD and I have tried sharing to iDVD. Like I said when I go back to the orginal version in iMovie none of these errors exist. Please anyone experience these types of issues?

Hello showard29 & welcome to discussions...
Try this - delete the following file:
    ~(yourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.addressbook.plist
As well, have you made a permissions repair pass via Disk Utility lately?

  • Changing iMovie background during photo show

Does anyone know how to change the background during still photos in iMovie HD? Ideally looking for a complete white matte (rather than generic black), for when some or all photos are not the same size as the QT movie or TV screen. I'm not talking about backgrounds during transitions here. I figured there must be a way to do this because it can be changed in iPhoto, but really need change in iMovie. Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers!

    Mark,
Unfortunately, you cannot change the background in iMovie.
If you don't mind spending some money, Photo to Movie will allow you to. It can also do multiple key frames and rotations.
    I believe there's a free trial version.

  • Why doesn't iDVD burn changes made within iMovie?

I have iMovie 6.0.3 and iDVD 6.0.3 and have made several movies and DVDs over the past few years. But now have hit something very frustrating....
    1) I've just completed a movie in iMovie. Took it to iDVD, created menus etc. then burned it to a DVD-RW. Noticed a couple of changes I wanted to make, namely a soundtrack volume adjustment, and a subtitle change (within iMovie). Made the changes in iMovie.
    2) When I opened iDVD again, it said it noticed some changes in the iMovie project and would I accept them. Answered yes. When I reviewed these changes in iDVD preview, all was well. It showed the new subtitle.
    3) Did another burn (3-4 hour process, mostly encoding) to disk image. Lo and behold, this new movie still showed the OLD subtitle!!
    4) Deleted this disk image file. Checked the iDVD preview again, and it showed the corrected subtitle. Created a NEW disk image (for the THIRD time!) and four hours later discover that the OLD subtitle is still there!!!
What the heck is going on?? iMovie file was modified, resulting iDVD project file reflected the change, but the "burn" result does NOT reflect the change!!!! Why is iDVD Burn sill picking up the old version of my movie?____
    Thanks-

You're right. Only selecting Advanced>Delete Encoded Assets did the trick. Otherwise, even though iDVD recognizes that the iMovie file had changed, it doesn't necessarily "pick up" all the changes ....unless you Delete Encoded Assets.
I don't know which changes iDVD does or doesn't pick up, but in future I will always Delete Assets to be sure. Saves lots of time in the long run.
    THANKS for your help!!
P.S. I did not have background encoding enabled. Never do.
