Changes to iPhoto pics thru Finder now don't appear in iPhoto

I have about 9000 pics in iPhoto6. I spent 7 hours doing a massive organization of them yesterday. Unfortunately, I did all the moving and renaming through the iPhoto library in FINDER. These changes now do NOT appear in iPhoto. I've searched this forum for help and see that TD advised never to do this. Of course, I never suspected changes made in Finder wouldn't be changed in iPhoto. Is there any way to fix or work around this problem so I don't lose all my hard work? We're purchasing iLife8 this week. Don't know if that will help at all?
~kactuskat

I regret to say that you've rather wasted all your hard work.
Upgrading to iLife 08 will not solve this problem.
iPhoto is a database, and like any database requires that you manipulate the data via the app itself. In other words: You do ALL your work in the iPhoto Window and let it look after the files.
Are you using iPhoto 6 now? If so, this will create a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
Many people change things in the Finder to make it easier to find the files. There's no need:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

yes, its the macbook air and mac OS X 10.7.4, not sure how that goes, about the time machine and time capsule, i only started using it today, when they were already deleted, also read at the support and help of iphoto, that if you delete your images from the picture folder that the images will be corrupted permanently, does this mean there there is no actual way of getting them back?
    Thanks for the help x

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Firstly, you need to change your details with Apple,  Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > store, scroll down and tap your ID)

My iPhoto closed unexpectedly and now it says "Rebuilding the iPhoto Library database". What is going on and are my photos still going to be there?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what were you doing when iPhoto closed unexpectedly?
how big is your library, i.e. how many photos?
how long has the rebuilding been going on?
do you have a recent backup of the library made just prior to this occurring?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • How get iPhoto Library in "Finder" to mirror "Source" folders in iPhoto?

My data was transferred from a PC to my Mac. When the photos from my PC photo software migrated, the Apple Genius (or operating system, iPhoto program, etc.) organized them totally differently from how they were organized on my PC. I was able to create new folders with the apporpriate subfolders and photos in the iPhoto application. In "Finder", though, it's all still organized the wrong way. It creates problems when, for example, I want to attach a photo to an e-mail. I cannot find a particular photo unless I actually look at in iPhoto, the way I reorganized it. So... does anyone know if/how I can get the Pictures part of my Finder to mirror (or as close as possible) the organization I have in the iPhoto application itself. Many thanks!

    Hi TexanMac,
Any albums and folders you make within iPhoto to organize your photos will not be reflected in the iPhoto Library folder in the finder. all the album, folders, books, slideshows etc. are all just info stored in data files.
What is reflected in the finder is your roll structure. The rolls you have within iPhoto are the same in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. If you name your rolls, then they will be easy to find in the Finder.
Take a look at the screenshot and you will see what I mean.
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.
By the way, you can select photos in iPhoto and hit the Mail icon to have them attached to your email. What email client do you use?
You can also control click on a photo within iPhoto and scroll to "show file". this will open a Finder window with your photo selected.

  • Photostreams Don't Appear in iPhoto

    Hi,
I am having an issue with iPhoto on my MacBook.  I used to have lots of photo streams as well as the standard auto upload photo stream, but recently I accidentally turned off photos for iCloud in system preferences.  I immediately turned it back on but it was too late, the photo streams where gone!  All that appeared when I turned it back on was the standard auto upload photo stream.  The other photo streams did not load back in to iPhoto.  Besides losing lots of photos (This might not be an issue as I just put them on to another computer) the main annoyance is that the photo streams I created and the ones I had subscribed to had disappeared from iPhoto.  The weird thing is that these photo streams still appear on my iPhone!!  Is there anything I can do to get the other photo streams back on to iPhoto?
    Thanks
    Thomas

Also, the people who subscribed to my photo streams can still see them and can post photos to them!  I noticed that on my iPhone the photo streams are not updating with new photos that are being posted!!  Any help would be great as I am on holiday and am desperate to sort this before I go home!!
    thanks

  • Maps don't appear in iPhoto places anymore

I have an imac with iphoto 09 and have used places/maps in the past and maps no longer appear when i chose places. what gives?

You, me and a whole bunch of other people have encountered the same problem. Deleting the com.apple.iphoto.plist preference file, which worked in the past, has not resolved the problem for most of us. You might keep your eye on this discussion for updates:

  • Photos I take now don't appear on the map?

I have the new ipod touch. It was working until yesterday evening. I love this feature. GPS is working by the way. Any ideas?

iPod do not have GPS. They use the location of nearby wifi routers that are in Apple's database. Not all routers are in Apple's database.
Were you at a different network when you took the pictures?
When you are where yoiu took the pictures did/does the Map apps show your location?

  • IPhoto pics not appearing in iphoto folder in finder

    Hi
I'm unable to find my pics in the iphoto folder in Finder.  They are definitely in iPhoto but it as though the two are not in sync.  So when I want to upload a photo to my facebook profile, for instance, I can't find the photos in the iphoto folder that are on the iphoto software.  I think this is a recent development, possibly since I upgraded to Lion but I can't be sure.  I've definitely been able to access my pics via the Finder folder before.
    Help!
    Cheers!
    Steve

What version of iPhoto did you have before upgrading to Lion?  Ever since iPhoto 8 the iPhoto library has been a closed Unix folder/package and we've not been able to open it in with the Finder.
Yhe following is from a post by Terence Devlin on accessing photos for use outside of iPhoto.  It's the definitive treatise on the subject.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation   which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3.Show File:
    a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    b. On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
iPhoto 11 has a Facebook option with which you can upload directly to FB.

  • Images on Robohelp are very poor quality/blurry or don't appear at all

    Hello,
Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated as I have been attempting to solve this for several hours a day for the past week.
I have a simple employee handbook in word (about 20 pages with images) that I’m trying to turn into an html-based document. I've tried a couple if things in order to get this file into robohelp. I've linked the word document to RoboHelp and worked with that, and I've also imported the word doc into framemaker and then linke my framemaker document to Robohelp.
I’ve managed to create the html version with a table of contents doing it both ways, but there are a few images in the word document that turn out really bad in the html version. They look fine in the word document and in pdf version, but when I view them in RoboHelp or  in the html version of the document they’re very blurry and choppy. It almost looks as it pixels are missing. I’ve tried everything I could think of but nothing changes the quality of the image. As soon as I link the word document or framemaker document, when I click "view" on the specific image, or just view it from the handbook in Robohelp the image looks terrible.
Someone suggested that I checkmark "do not re-generate image" under project settings but now some of my images aren't appearing at all. All of my images are the same type but I've also tried changing it to png, or bmp, jpeg but nothing changes. They're either blurry or don't appear at all.
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

I don't know if this will help you, but I've had issues with poor image quality when importing Word documents into RH7. I see a fuzziness problem with most images--screen shot or not--but it seems really pronounced if the image in Word is reduced to less than 100%. To resolve this, I've opted to manually copy any Word images to another application (I use SnagIt), save them at 100% to PNG format (JPG and GIFs also work), and import the saved image files to Robohelp. That sounds like that's what you ended up doing with Photoshop.
Also, I wonder if it makes a difference how much the text was magnified/reduced when they took the original screen shots. I just did an experiment--using SnagIt, I took a screen capture of a block of text at 100% magnification. I then pasted the screen shot directly from SnagIt into my Robohelp document. It came in perfectly clean--couldn't see any obvious difference between the Robohelp text and the image of the Word text. I got the same results when I saved the screen capture to a PNG file and imported it that way. That leads me to believe the problem you're seeing is a result of having Word images automatically converted to RH.
(In the example--unfortunately hard to see-- the text in the red box is from a screen capture; the rest of the text was entered in RH8--there's no discernable difference in quality.)

  • Organizer photos not appearing on iPhoto after I downloaded them

I have Elements 12 and some photos I downloaded from iPhoto to Organizer now are not appearing on iPhoto, and are grouped together as a folder in Organizer, instead of appearing individually in Organizer

    Memory is getting small
By memory do you mean free disk space? How much free space do you have? It's strongly recommended that a minimum of 10GB free space be maintained (20 GB if you use iDVD a lot) for optimal system and application performance.
By searching for thumbnails can you explain further? Do you get a message?

    Please I'll be thankfull.

I stated that I did try to do all of this when I first set up the new computer...I did do the Setup Assistant numerous times but my old computer kept freezing half way through.  Even if I did it when I first got the new computer back in Septemeber, I would have had the same issue b/c my old computer has been 'broken' for a while.  My old computer can't handle doing too much at once and I think the setup and then migration functions I tried were too much.  That's why I was hoping I could use the migration function piecemeal.  I wish I could just check off the exact files and folders I want vs. having to choose it at the 'user' level...that's too much for my old computer to have to transfer.

  • IPhoto Library in Finder changed after iPhoto 6.0.6 update - HELP!!!

I recently installed iLife 06 on my Powerbook and soon afterwards got a message that my iPhoto would be updated. Not having any problems in the past with software updates, I clicked the 'ok' button. Then when I went into Finder, I found that the whole organisation of my photos in the iPhoto Library had changed from being sorted by year, month and day, to year and roll. I HATE this and cannot find any photos or films the way I used to find them. Can anybody explain WHY on earth Apple have decided to sort files this way and if there is anything I can do to revert to the old way? Also in the iPhoto Library now, the same photos seem to be in at least 3 different places. WHAT is that all about??? I would be so grateful if someone could help! Thanks in advance, a very frustrated Mac lover!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Can anybody explain WHY on earth Apple have decided to sort files this way and if there is anything I can do to revert to the old way?
I think they changed the entire database engine with iPhoto6 to take account of ever growing libraries.
But NO there is NO way to revert to the older way, nor is there any need to.
To find pics - and this was also the way in earlier versions - you never need to look in the iPhoto Library Folder. There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Also in the iPhoto Library now, the same photos seem to be in at least 3 different places. WHAT is that all about???
iPhoto - as it has always done - keeps your Original file, untouched, a Modified version (if you've edited it) and a thumbnail. This has been the way since iPhoto 1.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
IF you do your work in the iPhoto Window - as is intended with the app - then you'll have no problems whatever.
