Changes to Same as Source Printing - CS4

Hello Everyone,
I'm in the process of testing CS4 for deployment to a large print production environment and I'm seeing some interesting behavoir in so far as it's handling of color management is concerned, specifically with Same as Source printing from Acrobat.
I currently have CS2 deployed, and we're using InDesign for page composition. We primarily accept Adobe RGB (1998) and US Web Coated (SWOP) artwork. PDFs are created from InDesign via File > Export, and we have it configured for "No Color Conversion" and "Include all Profiles." As such, our PDFs contain both RGB and CMYK artwork, all of which is tagged with an ICC profile.
In Acrobat 7, we submit these files "Same as Source" to our RIPs (Fiery and Wasatch) in order to preserve the embedded profiles. All of our color management is handled at the RIP. This works quite nicely. We have tested the submissions and the RGB and CMYK builds (color numbers) come through dead on.
With Acrobat 9 Same as Source submissions, we are seeing that the builds are changing, and that we are getting a conversion to CMYK.
-Original PDF file
Raster RGB - 191,45,47
Here are the numbers that are submitted by Acrobat, captured by our RIP:
-Acrobat 7 Same As Source
Raster RGB - 191,45,47
-Acrobat 7 Printer/Postscript Color Management
Raster CMYK- 0,244,245,0
-Acrobat 9 Same As Source
Raster CMYK - 0,242,251,0
-Acrobat 9 Printer/Postscript Color Management
Raster CMYK - 0,242,251,0
-Acrobat 9 Acrobat Color Management
Raster CMYK - 17,248,245,1
So the question is: What changes have been made in Acrobat 9 to cause for it to handle Same as Source print submissions differently? Why is it that our builds are changing when Same as Source has always been how we get "pass through" color from Acrobat?
Has anyone else run into this? From the perspective of a RIP-driven, color managed workflow, this is a serious issue, no?

We’ve done some further investigations into the differences in Same as Source printing from Acrobat 7 and Acrobat 9. For our tests we created a simple InDesign file with two red vector rectangles, one defined as Adobe RGB (1998) and one as U.S. Web Coated (SWOP). This file was then exported to PDF with “No Color Conversion” and “Include All Profiles.” The resulting PDF contained both rectangles tagged as specified, as verified with PitStop.
We then opened this PDF in both Acrobat 7 and 9 and printed to PS files (at the time, the queue for our HP5500PS was selected). Our cursory findings are:
1. The file sizes differs, which suggests that there is a difference right off the bat.
2. The printed artwork differs visually, which is troublesome.
3. In both instances, when opened in Notepad2, the page objects appear to be tagged properly with Adobe RGB and SWOP specified as the objects color space. This, on the other hand, is good.
a.       Acrobat 7
  i.      RGB – Line 3342
  ii.      CMYK – Line 3400
b.       Acrobat 9
  i.      RGB – Line 8406
  ii.      CMYK – Line 8468
4. And here's the biggie: When the PS file created from Acrobat 9 is opened in Illustrator, it says "The document does not have an embedded RGB profile" and it allows for the specification of an RGB profile ONLY. When the PS file created from Acrobat 7 is opened in Illustrator, it says "This document contains objects using both CMYK and RGB color modes. Illustrator allows only one color mode per document. Which color mode would you like to use?" Of course, this PS file SHOULD contain mixed color modes (because it came from a mixed color mode PDF), but only the PS files from Acrobat 7 do. The PS files from Acrobat 9 do NOT. This suggests to us that the PS files (and therefor print data submitted to PS queues as Same As Source) created by Acrobat 9 are not honoring the embedded ICC profiles of tagged artwork.
Does anyone out there have any thoughts or experience? If what we are finding is true, this is a major problem for Adobe's Acrobat 9 print engine.
Matt
Matt,
I think I see why you need PS, maybe to get proper device orientation?
I downloaded your PS files and distilled. The Acrobat 7 is all mystery meat. The Acrobat 9 is calibrated.
It looks like 9 is preserving all the tags, and 7 isn't. So the tags may be your problem. One option is decalibrating everything in Acrobat 9 but it's an extra step.
Maybe Don't Include Profiles out of ID would solve your problem BUT
To me it looks like 9 is doing the right thing (preserving tags), and 7 isn't. Generally you want calibrated output. Maybe your RIP is performing an extra unwanted conversion of the tagged content that's in the PS output from Acrobat 9...

  • How to set default PDF print locations to be same as source file

Is it possible to make the "Save to" location for files created using the Adobe PDF print driver to be the same location as the source file?
When I checked the prefs dialog box in the Adobe PDF print driver, the only setting I found was to make "PDF Output Folder" either the "My Documents" folder or "Prompt for PDF File Name." I wish there were a third option that said "Same as source file."
    -Danny

Hi Daniel,<br /><br />Yes, it is possible to do so.<br /><br />Here is the solution:<br /><br />1) Open the PDF.<br />2) File->Print<br />3) Click the Properties button available on Print Dialog Box.<br />4) Select the Adobe PDF Settings Tab and you will find static text "Adobe PDF Output Folder", Go for "Browse" button available against that and select your preferred location.<br />5) Now the drop down menu will display all the options i.e. "My Documents" , "Prompt for PDF File Name" and "<Your selected Option>".<br /><br />I hope this will help resolve your issue.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Atul Agarwal<br />Adobe Systems

  • Can't change tray/paper size when printing photos

I'm using an HP Photosmart C5200 and I want to print onto 4x6 photo paper, but I can't seem to change from the default tray with 8.5x11 paper. I've played around in the print dialogue box and File>Page Setup but to no avail.

Not sure if this is the same problem I'm having. I have a HP C5180, and when I go to print I get all the necessary options (by dropping down the traingle as advised above), and all's great..... apart from the Source tray is always set to Main Tray instead of the Photo.
I can change it each time I print, but it won't stay defaulted to Photo Tray even when I save or 'Save as' a new Preset. I have tried to overwrite the default ones, but no go, and also saved as a new Preset, but it still doesn't come up as the default selection next time I go in to print.
Sounds easy enough to cope with I know, but I've set it up for a 84 year old to print from and I don't expect she'll manage to do this change every time.

  • What does "Same as source" mean?

I thought it meant that the video one tries to encode will stay at the same video rate and resolution as the original video. However, this doesn't appear to be the case. Basically, I want the resulting .flv file to be the same as the original video I'm asking it to encode.
This is a screen shot of me trying to encode a video.
    A few things to note:
The source clearly states that the video is at a 16:9 aspect with dimensions of 1280x720 (which is accurate). However, the output states 960x720 - which is not correct. Yet all the settings I can find are set to "same as source."
I have tried to "change" the resolution to 1280x720 but the encoder will still output a different resolution.
So, how exactly does one get what they ask for with this program?

Thanks for providing a sample clip, 998... Using your clip, I have reproduced the 960x720 results that you report, but only in the AME 4.2.0.006; CS4.0 and 5.0 do not manifest this problem. Also, in 4.2.0, I can repro _only_ with the clip you provided, not with any clips that I tried from our library of test content, including clips that I created to mimic yours as closely as possible.
In the course of attempting to mimic the properties of your clip, I noticed an anomaly, which may or may not pertain to this issue. According to MediaInfo (a utility that shows all the properties of a video clip), the Level = 3.0. By my understanding (which I hasten to add is less than rock-solid), Level 3.0 does not support dimensions of 1280x720 @ a frame rate of 24fps. If in fact the clip is not in compliance with the MPEG4/h.264 standards, that still doesn't explain why AME 4.2.0 gets the output dimensions wrong when 4.0 and 5.0 do not.
Bottom line: I suggest downloading the trial of PPRO 5.5 (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=premiere_pro) and using AME CS5.5 for this job.

  • If employee id is the same should not print on the xml publisher report

    Hi Dear,
I met with one problem and needs some suggestion on the best approach on it. It is a xml publisher report.
We have multiple rows for the same employee , but for the same employee only the first row needs to print the emplid.
Do we need to write the if statement , how to get the value of the last row emplid ?
    For example :
    EMPLID EMP_RCD STATE
    1001 0 CA
    1 TX
    Any suggestion is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

I understand your requirement is as follows:
    Requirement:_
    The data is this ->
    EMPLID COLUMN 1 COLUMN 2 COLUMN 3
    EMPLID_01 DATA_01_01 DATA_02_01 DATA_03_01
    EMPLID_01 DATA_01_02 DATA_02_02 DATA_03_02
    EMPLID_01 DATA_01_03 DATA_02_03 DATA_03_03
    EMPLID_02 DATA_01_04 DATA_02_04 DATA_03_04
And you need report in this format:
    EMPLID_01 DATA_01_01 DATA_02_01 DATA_03_01
    DATA_01_02 DATA_02_02 DATA_03_02
    DATA_01_03 DATA_02_03 DATA_03_03
    EMPLID_02 DATA_01_03 DATA_02_04 DATA_03_04
    Solution:_
If my understanding is correct, then you can make use of variables
at start of template set the variable to 0
    *<?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,'PREV_EMPLID',0)?>*
at the end of each data row, reset the variable
    *<?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,'PREV_EMPLID',EMPLID)?>*
while printing emplid in that row use IF condition
    *<?if:(xdoxslt:get_variable($_XDOCTX, 'PREV_EMPLID'))!=EMPLID?>*
The above If condition will print emplid on the row only when there is change in EMPLID, so effectively printing emplid only on the 1st row of data for each employee id.
Also, you need to ensure that you group by employee id before you print each row.
Let me know if this works for you.

  • Keeping table name same in source and target

is it possible to keep the table name the same in source and target (they're on sepearte databases). Seems like OWB wants to rename the output table (usually adds 1 on the end). When I tried to rename I got a message saying that table name exists.

    In my mapping.
First I defined a source and a target. The table on the target doesn't exist yet.
I open mapping editor...drag the table from my source. Let's call it TABLE_A. Then I add Table operator to the mapping (choose create unbound operator with no attributes option). For the name I choose TABLE_A...however when I click OK it then changes the name to TABLE_A_1.
So I double click on the table and change the name to TABLE_A and then I get the message that the table already exists.

  • Ahhhhh... change the description for "Reset printing system"!!!!!!!!!!

    It reads exactly like this:
"Are you sure you want to reset the printing system?
This will delete all of your existing printer queues and all pending print jobs."
Who would expect this will delete all the installed printers??
Apple should really change this warning in the dialog box to
"Are you sure you want to reset the printing system?
This will delete all of your existing printer queues and all pending print jobs *and all the printers installed in your system*."

"Installed printer" means exactly the same thing as "print queue," although I agree this might not be obvious.

  • Sequence Conforming and "Same as Source" in CC / Pro Res

    Hello all.
Using Premiere CC - on both a Mac 10.8.2 and 10.7.x.  Both machines have CS6, as well as FCP 7 and FCP X installed.
The goal is to import 1 ProRes file with captions, do a few cuts, then export with as minimal transcoding as possible.  No other clips, no other codecs, nothing but cuts and dissolves and captioning.
I import a ProRes file, and create a new sequence based on that file (planning on doing an export after the edit which was based on sequence settings.  I thought this would be the easiest way to maintain the same settings through the entire process.)
On my 10.8. CC machine, dropping a ProRes 422 HQ file on a new timeline, and I select to change sequence settings to match the clip, the sequence settings display DNxHD145.  On my 10.7.x box, the timeline comes up as AVCHD.  An associates machine comes up as ARRI.  Timebase and frame size are right, but not the codec.
I understand that the sequence settings are less important for output, as the transcode pulls from the raw media, not the sequence esettings.
However, without the sequence accurately conforming to the media clip, I am unable to export using sequence settings.  This means I need to manually transpose the codec properties into the export window.  This can be tedious and is easy to mess something up.
    So:
    1) why is the sequence not conforming to the ProRes clip?  And why is it different on 3 different machines?
    2) How can I get the export settings to mirror the clip properties? - without manually transposing the properties?
    3) The end goal, in Avid parlance, is "Same As Source".  Does this function exist in Premiere?
    Thanks all!
    ~Michael

    Hello Jacob & Reinout
I have the same challenge. and all though I can't provide the answer I can share my investigation.
I recently tested Squeeze 9.0 which now supports CS6 Media Encoder and ProRes. It also has an option of a 1-1 passthrough from the sequence timeline so in theory this should provide a solution, however with the testing I have done I ca't get a pure 16fps export as it appears to export at 15.8fps and then renders the file useless.
I spoke to Sorenson about this and then they suggest speak to Adobe.... the normal pass the book approach. So the problem is either that Abobe is not creating a pure 16fps export to the encoder or the problem is with Squeeze.
Why not check out the Squeeze 9.0 option and let me know how you get on in case its my implementation that is the problem.
    regards
    Steve

  • Why I cannot change the generated data source?

    Hello all,
I have a generated data source from ODS, now I need to change something on it but the system only allow me to display it even I clicked the pen-glasses icon. Could anybody tell me how?
    Thanks
    Ryan

    Hi Ryan,
You can't the generated data source from an ODS object, this is becasue ODS supplies delta from change log tables and the export data source / info-source structure should be same as of the change log table.
However you can change the generated data source-info source assignment of info-cube.
    Hope it helps

    Hi gramie47,
Sorry to hear that didn't resolve the issue.
I checked online for issues printing from the Internet, found a couple of things you can try. Most likely it is a setting that needs to be changed in the browser settings, since the printer prints fine from the computer.
From Internet Explorer, go to File, Page setup, Remove check from "Printer background color and images" if checked, or vise versa, to see if that helps.
