Changes to track info in iTunes sometimes doesn't "stick"

I have been slowly ripping my large CD collection into iTunes 10.7. Most of it is classical. This means that a great deal of clean-up has to be done, due to the sad state of the Gracenote database, which is riddled with inconsistencies and spelling errors. I have do a lot of editing, sometimes to make things I ripped a couple of years ago consistent with the way I'm listing things now. Within the past few days, I've corrected the same error several times: a misspelling of Beethoven's first name. I've looked for the misspelled variant in the four genres within which it could occur, have found it, and corrected it. And yet today it showed up again. This error is easy to correct, although I am not eager to do it repeatedly, but it makes me anxious about what other edits might not have been retained.
Is there a way to ensure that edits are truly saved?
How robust is iTunes’ library? Is there a size at which it no longer functions correctly?
This is an enormous amount of work and the thought of it possibly being lost due to some sort of corruption is a horrible one.

i had this problem a while ago.
In fact i had this problem about 5 seconds ago.
I was getting all these songs with Artist ft Artist 2 when i didn't need or want that.
After rebooting, resyncing, renaming ALOT of items etc... i gave up.
I then replugged it back into my iMac, made a new playlist on the ipod touch, then i closed the music app on the multi-task bar.
I then synced it from the main screen, and then after waiting for a while - the new playlist was there and all the artists were fixed... i have no idea what i did, but it's worth noting that since you can still play music on IOS5 while it is syncing, it's best to just turn off the music app.
BTW - I don't sync music from itunes library - i manually manage my music...

  • Change track info in iTune and affect the ones in iPod Touch? (bug?)

When I change my album names in iTune (or any other info), they aren't affected in my iPod Touch (for example in my iPod I have multiple folders for the same album, which I desperately try to change), what to do?

No answers after a whole day? Are employees around in these forum? Wondering, is it better I call at the 1-800 number to get support?

  • Unable to edit track info in iTunes on a Mac Air

    Hello,
I recently switched from a windows PC to a Mac Air. All my music was organizaed on an external hard drive. I have now imported the music in to my iTunes on my Mac Air. I am unable to edit individual track info when I use "Get Info". I tried to look up for permissions on the particular folder and found that they are all set as "Read Only".
Any help in this matter is appreciated.

Go to your Music (media)  folder. The one that holds the actual files.
Click it and press Cmd+I or right click and select "Get Info"
In the Info pane, click the lock to change permissions:
You'll need to tnter your password to make any chnages.
Set ALL permissions to Read & Write
Click the Gear and select "Apply to enclosed items..."
Then click "OK" when asked if you're sure.
Let it apply to everything and THEN try editing the track oinfo.

  • Track info causing itunes freeze?!

i am running windows xp on thinkpad - no built-in cd so using duronic drive. i insert a cd and when try to get track info - itunes hangs (i changed preferences so it didn't seek automatically as that also caused hang) - any ideas? thanks

The iTunes Match service does not modify your existing ID3 tags to insert tags from the iTunes Store. You're tags are synced to the cloud and remain just as they were in your original library if you download the "matched" tracks from the cloud.

  • Updating track info  in itunes using applescript

Hi Ive created a playlist of tracks that have been edited outside of iTunes, but the changes are not shown in iTunes until I select getInfo for the file using iTunes. I need to tell itunes to update the info for each track in the playlist, I tried using the command update and it doesnt give an error , but doesnt seem to do anything either - I cant find a suitable command in the itunes dictionary.

add (file "Macintosh HD:Users:paul:track7.mp3") to new_playlist
add (file "Macintosh HD:Users:paul:track8.mp3") to new_playlist
    repeat with nexttrack in new_playlist

  • When I download a long album from ITunes containing like 20-30 tracks, why does ITunes sometimes segregate one track and create a separate album out of it. I can merge the track into the other tracks on a playlist, but I can not merge the 2 albums.

When I download an opera album with lets day 40 songs (tracks). Why does iTunes create one album of tracks lets say 1 through 22, skip 23 and then 24 through 40. Then a separate album with track 23 is created. I can merge them together in a playlist but not as a single album. I go into the info under the file menu for each and make sure the information is the same but they still will not merge.

I'm not sure why this happens, but I found a workaround. Below the album title it will list the artist(s). The issue seems to happen when there are multiple artists. For example, an Album titled "Over the Sea to Skye" has The Chieftains and James Galway as artists. Some tracks (for whatever reason) will list only one of these and result in the playlist showing what appears to be multiple albums. You can click on the artists and it will highlight. Paste in what is appearing on the other "albums" and it will then show as one:
Hope that is somewhat clear enough to help. Doesn't fix whatever the issue is but it is a workaround. For me this is only happening with CD's that I have imported.

  • How to edit track info in iTunes for Windows

Sorry if this is a repeat but I've searched the discussions and didn't see one that really fit. I purchased a song off of a sound track and then a few days later I purchased the rest of the album. Turns out the single song I purchased was from a "Deluxe Album" and when I purchased the rest it was form the regular album. I was able to edit the name of the album on the Deluxe song so they are now grouped together in my library under one album (before they were in two separate albums) but the tracks are still not in order. The regular album tracks are numbered 2 of 17, 3 of 17,4 of 17 etc. but the deluxe song is numbered 1 of 21. How do I rename the track number, or some other idea, and put song #1 at the top to be played first??

In iTunes hightlight the song and do Get Info (control-I). On the right hand side of the track's Info tab is the track number which you can change (you'll probably need to change both the track number and the 'of' value. You may also want to check the values on that screen are consistent with the rest of songs in the album, and possibly on the Sorting tab.

  • ITunes sometimes doesn't sort my mp3 folder

hey everyone - i triesd searching the forum for an answer to this but unfortunately didn't seem to find anything. i might be searching with the wrong keywords. but basically my question is this:
ihave iTunes set up so that it sorts my mp3 folder. i think this is pretty straight forward. i move all my songs and downloads (mainly from beatport.com) into my mp3 folder and then import them to iTunes (usually by dragging into iTunes) most of the time iTunes takes the raw file that has some kind of weird id3 tag like 0192deep_space_carl_craigremix and sorts it appropriately into a folder with Artist, Title, Album, etc... that way when i go to look for it, its under the artist, not just a single file like the one above
but SOMETIMES it doesn't do this. sometimes the file stays with that funky tag. which means when i go to search for it it's NOT under the artist's name. mainly th issue i run into is when using something like Ableton, i can't search my folder by artists, i have to search this mess of random songs starting with numbers like 839093_Deep... etc...
anyone have any idea why iTunes doesn't sort these song files? it seems pretty random, but it WILL do it as one big chunk. meaning if i buy 10 songs from Beatport, it either sorts ALL 10 appropriately, or it DOESN'T sort all 10... never anything in between
    any insight would be fantastic!!!

unfortunately thats the problem. usually either iTunes manages the folders immediately OR - all i have to do is manually change the iTunes tags and it will automatically reconfigure the folder and place these songs that have the iD3 tags of 8948204_xxxxxx into the right format. So for example if the song is mark alexandre - itunes help. the file with 43289294ituneshelp will automatically be put into a folder for Mark Alexandre...
it just hasn't been doing it lately....

  • Cannot edit track info in itunes

    I just downloaded iTunes v. 10.6.3.25
I connected my iPhone to my computer and let iTunes see that it's there. If I try to go in under devices to my music library that is on the phone NOT in the library on the computer and try to right click, get info, I cannot edit any of the track information in there.
Do I have to sync the phone to my iTunes and transfer all of the music to the computer to be able to edit the info? I have an older iPod and I can connect it, go into devices and edit in there with no issues, it just won't let me do it on the phone.
    Please help!!

Personally, I would edit the information in your iTunes Library and then connect the iPhone and Sync the library with the iPhone.
Since it's a Sync (synchronization) of iTunes with your iPhone, any new information on the phone (such as play counts) will be synced with iTunes while the updated track information in the library will be synced with the phone.

  • Changing MP3 Track Names in iTunes 11 for Exporting to CD

I'm trying to export my playlists from iTunes 11 to an MP3 CD/SD Card to play in my car.   When I export the songs/play lists the, iTunes names the file names as the track number and song name (i.e. "01 song name.mp3", "02 another song name.mp3"); which makes it difficult to search for a song while driving.
Ideally, I would like to export the MP3 files as <Artist Name> - <Album Name> - <Song Name>, but will compromise if there are limitations
I tried downloading another software but then it changed all the album names around when it imported the album names and still exported the same way previously, which I'm trying to avoid doing again.
Is there a way to do a mass change retroactively using iTunes for my entire library?  I've been seeing posts about changing the default naming structure when importing a new files to the iTunes library, but not in this situation.
    MacBook v. 10.6.8
    Using iTunes v.11

Make a new folder on your computer which will represent the CD you want to create.  Drag the tracks from iTunes to that folder.  This will put copies of the files in the folder.  Now I haven't needed to do this but what I say should work, though I have to add I have always manually managed my music so in some of hte places where iTunes will fight you I have no problems..  Make a new iTunes playlist which is a scratchpad for working on these files.  Select the files and hold down the option key while dragging those files back to iTunes (alternatively, create a new iTunes library just for working on your mp3 CDs by holding down the option key while starting iTunes).  Option dragging will have iTunes use the file in its original location and not put it in your media folder.  Next look on the Dougscripts website for a script which lets you rename files (probably File Renamer).  Use that to rename your selected files as desired.  You can use Finder's burn utility to burn this folder to a data CD since that's all a mp3 CD is anyway.  However, realize that your car player is likely to simply play everything by file name unless it is a sophisticated player that can read metadata tags (which is sounds like it isn't), but at least the file names will include more complete information.

  • ITunes sometimes doesn't recognize iPad or Touch

After working properly for a month, my system has developed a glitch. When I connect my iPad, iTunes does not open or mount the iPad. The iPad does begin to charge, but there is no "sync behavior" going on. I tried reinstalling iTunes, and everything worked properly--until I restarted the computer. Then it went back to not mounting the iPad. Reinstalled iTunes again--works properly again. (The same thing happens with my Touch.) Surely I don't have to reinstall iTunes after every shutdown.
This is a 24in Aluminum iMac running OS 10.6.2. I was running 10.6.3, but learned from the genius at the bar that there is some glitch in that upgrade that makes my iMac lock up periodically, and per his instructions I went back to 10.6.2. The syncing problem started about that time.
Again everything is fine after I reinstall iTunes (9.1.1) but anytime the computer is restarted, there is no sync. Any ideas? Do I need to go back to an earlier version of iTunes?

I've been having exactly the same experience, though I've been running iTunes 10.0.1 (OS 10.6.4). My iPad won't mount despite restarting, so I uninstalled iTunes <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1224>, reinstalled <http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/>, and it would work fine for a day or less.
So I just uninstalled again and then installed the previous version of iTunes (9.2.1), and that seems to be working so far. I'll chime in again later with results over time.
