Changing a document's desktop icon to the cover of the document

Hey gang, the subject pretty much says it all.  What I mean is, I opened a PDF file, then saved a shortcut to my desktop.  When I did, the shortcut icon was the cover of the document.  Great!  Now it's easier for me to choose which document to read!  Now, on my new computer, it doesn't do that, so I've got a bunch of generic PDF icons all over the place.  How do I get back to the nice, easy, icon I had before?  There's got to be a setting I'm not seeing, or a trick to this.  I'm running Windows 7 if that helps.  Thanks!

Do you use Windows 7 32bit?

Have just installed Mavericks and restarted the MacBook Pro. That was 3 hours ago and after logging in, I got my wallpaper and dock, but none of my desktop icons, just the spinning coloured wheel. It's been like that for 2 hours. Is this normal? What should I do, please?
I tried holding the on/off switch down to make it shut down, but when I turned it back on again, the same thing happened and none of the keys etc makes any difference.
    HELP!!!! Please.

No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.

  • Desktop Icons On The Right. Why?

What's the reasoning/logic behind having all the desktop icons listed on the RIGHT side of the screen? I read and write in English, and I do that from left to right. So, to me, it would be logical to have my desktop icons on the LEFT side of the screen.
Why isn't there a desktop option to arrange the icons on either the left or right side of the screen?

Yes, it is a legacy from when Apple actually consulted and implemented its own Human Interface Guidelines, some of which were based on studies/theories (Fitts' Law) of what is easiest to hit with the mouse for right handers. As I recall, the primo location for "hitablility" was the lower right corner, which was where Apple originally had the Trash (mine is still there, because the theory works). For some entertaining reading on various design bugs, see Bruce Tagnazzini's web site:

He really really hates the Dock--lists it as Bug #3 in worst design bugs.

  • Why does the latest version of ITunes change all of my web based icons to ITunes programs and all of my desktop icons to the ITunes icons?

when downloading itunes why all my web based programs change to itunes programs and all of the desktop icons change to itune icons?

That's because iTunes is registering itself as the default application to open those kinds of files. I believe you can stop that behavior when you install it. To revert a file type's default handler you need to select it and select "Get Info" from the File menu and change the settings under "Open with:" to your desired application.

  • Itunes font changed in addition to desktop icons...

    See other message

You can force Vista to rebuild the desktop icons by changing your monitor's color depth momentarily. In the display properties, change to 16-bit color. Then change back to 32-bit.

  • Green Desktop Icon (for the external HD) for Time Machine

After I choosed my external Lacie HD as the BackUp Volume for Time Machine, the icon (on the Desktop) didn't change into the green (original) Time Machine Volume. How can I change that? Thanks a lot for your help, Beat.

I had a similar problem where my HD desktop icon originally changed to the green TM icon then reverted back to the original icon after I made some changes to TM preferences. To get the green TM icon back select the HD icon on your desktop and Get Info (Command-I). At the top of the Get Info dialog box next to the drive's name, click on the icon of the HD. It should have a light blue halo around it when selected. Once selected press the Delete key and the green TM HD icon should appear in place of the original HD icon.
    That worked for me.

  • How to create a Windows 8.1 Desktop icon from the Metro/Start and/or Search Tool?

I'm a Desktop user, but often find myself needing to go to the Metro/Start and Search Tool to find programs and App(let)s in order to run them.  However, after doing this several times for many programs, I find myself wanting to create
Desktop icons to run the programs more easily.  Is there a way to do this from the Metro/Start Icon and/or Search Tool results?
If not, Microsoft, please consider adding the ability to do this.
It would be very nice if this ability supported all of the icon types shown in the Metro/Start, Search Tool, and Control Panel interfaces, e.g.: Metro Apps, Desktop Programs, Charms, and Control Panel Applets.
Currently, there is a way to pin the Metro/Start Icon to the Desktop, but the Taskbar will get very cluttered with even only a handful icons.
It would be very nice if the desktop icon created by this also supported the context options that the program/app(let) now shows as Tasks when the icon is pinned to the Desktop Taskbar.
Additionally, it would be nice if I could also simply drag a Pinned Taskbar icon onto the Desktop area, again, retaining it's Tasks as context menu options when the Desktop Taskbar icon is right clicked.
This ability would be very helpful for people needing to get to programs and App(let)s, without having to resort the Metro/Start and Search Tool, because when there are a lot of Metro/Start icons, I have well over a hundred icons, it
can be very hard to find one simply eye-balling lot.  The Search feature is much better, provided I know the name to look for and can remember it.
Finally, this ability would be very helpful, because the kinds of desktop shortcut icons that I can create using the New Shortcut option, assuming that can I find the program/App(let)'s name and path information, do not support the context options
that the icons could in Windows 7 when an icon is created while installing the program.
    Thanks,
    Howard Brown

As a suggestion for your current situation, you can use Windows Charm Bar to search Apps, it is also easy to use.

  • I used to be able to open Earthlink through a desktop icon but the icon now opens through Internet Explorer. I can open it through foxfire but want separate ic

A friend used my computer to access his gmail account. I had to sign out of my gmail account but am now back. In the course of trying to help him access his account I opened Internet access.
After it appeared that my gmail account was ok I opened my Earthlink account through the desktop icon as usual. However, my password was not longer there and it was not opening in Foxfire. When I clicked on Foxfire my Earthlink account was there as was my password (hidden of course but saved) I want to be able to have a separate icon for Earthlink that includes my password. How do I do that? And I want to delete the one that appreas to go through Internet Explorer.

Was the shortcut created with Firefox, or Win IE?
Type '''about:preferences#general'''<enter> in the address bar.
Turn on '''Always Check Firefox Default Browser.'''

  • Changing Sapgui 6.4 desktop icon in SapAdmin setup.

I created a software package, using SapAdmin, to distribute the new gui to our clients.  I found that the default icon after the setup completes points to "Saplogon.SAL".  The logon pad opens faster when selecting "C:\Program Files\SAP\FrontEnd\sapgui\SapLogon.exe".  Typically these settings are located in an ini or xml file in the source folder.  If so, which XML file contains the settings to change the default icon?

    Hi Sushil,
does the download give you an option to select a codepage? Please make sure you do not download the list in UTF-8 codepage, as Excel does not support it.

  • DESKTOP ICONS: Customizing the icon preview transparency

    Remove border/background icon preview:
I'm a designer and I need to know what images are transparent by looking at the icon. However, the new icon preview in Leopard shows a white background to my transparent gifs as well as a border. Not to happy when I have to open each file to find the right one. I wish the preview would show exactly what it is.
That said, is there any way to make it like it was in Tiger?

have you tried viewing them in the Coverflow mode? My transparent pngs display correctly in coverflow but do show the white border in all other modes.

    Bump please.

  • How would I set the LabVIEW Execution Display.vi to automatically run a sequence from a desktop icon or the Start Menu Launcher.vi

LabVIEW does not support command line arguments. Are there some modifications to the Execution Display.vi that would enable this behavior?

    Hi,
This mods is to the LabVIEW OI supplied with TS2.0.1 and labVIEW 6.1
In the TestStand - Runtime Operator Interface.vi, the cmdline is obtained and the full path to the sequence file is stored in a global variable. When the Sequence Display is launched and the case First Time is executed. The cmd line global is checked for an empty string, if its not then the string is concatated with the string 'Open Sequence File - No Prompt|' and put on the message queue. This will result in the sequence file being opened.
The cmd line parsing is pretty basic. the argument is nothing or the full pathname to the sequence file.
If this is what you are after then send your email to [email protected]
I tried to attach the vi's but I am having some problems with thi
    s. Probably a size restriction.
    Hope this helps.

  • If I mak Firefox my default browsr, will the appearance of my Desktop Icons change? I had this problem with Goog. Chrom. I am using Wind. XP and Inter. Expl. 8.

When I made Google Chrome my default browser, the appearance of my desktop Icons was (nearly) completely changed. Will I experience this if I make Firefox my default browser? I could just go ahead and try Firefox as my default browser and see what happens, but I am running Mozilla Fences and have spent a lot of time getting the appearance of the desktop icons just the way I want them to be.

Firefox shouldn't change the icon of anything except files you set for it to open as deafult. For example, if you have an HTML file on your desktop and set Firefox to open it by default, it will change the icon to Firefox.
