Changing a Slave Drive to a Master

Thanks to your help, yesterday I successfully added a 1TB Drive to my G4 (it is my 3rd HD) and now would like to make it the Master Drive.
I have cloned my existing (Original) HD to it and now would like to make the switch- but I don't want to get into something and find out I forgot to do something when I can't come back online and ask more questions.
In my earlier question, Japmac responded:
+"If you want to make a copy of your existing drive to the new drive, follow this procedure...+
+After you have determined that the new drive is running as it should be, the old drive may be removed.+
+Open System Preferences, and set Startup Disk to the new hard drive.+
+Shut down, and remove the old drive.+
+Rejumper the new drive to Master, and connect to the end of the IDE ribbon.+
+You are now all set with the new drive.+
+You can continue to use the old drive for backup, etc., but be sure to jumper it to Slave."+
Is it that simple or do I need some additional software to allow me to start the computer from a new Drive? I have heard talk of "bootable" drives and I don't know if I need one or if the new drive is bootable.
Also, I needed to add a PCI card to which I connected the new drive. Will I be able to connect this drive to both the card and the IDE ribbon? If not, I can change out the existing 2nd drive for the Master as it is larger, just not as big as #3.
Thanks!

My card is a Sonnet Tempo and the tech info says it "boots from any attached hard drive" so it looks like I'm good to go!
Should be fine, then.
BTW, Firmtek makes the cards for Sonnet.

I would suggest you locate the model of the drive which can be seen using System Profiler. Once you know what model it is you can go to:
    www.maxtor.com
Look up your model hard drive and there you will be able to find everything about it including jumper settings and configurations.
The settings should be listed somewhere physically on the drive as well but if not the website has the info.

  • How do can I use Jumpstart to boot Solaris from Slave Drive

    Hi all,
I have XP on Master Drive and I used Jumpstart to install Solaris on Slave Drive.
    This is the profile:

...when I use Windows Boot Manager to boot Solaris... it cannot find the boot files on the master drive so it runs the DCA...
... so under the DCA I have to tell Solaris that the boot files are in my Slave Drive then I save it.

  • Can't install itunes to my slave drive

I added a new drive and made it a slave even though it's larger and faster and would probably have worked better as the master.
However, I want to install iTunes on the slave and run it from there because the drive is larger and my library is huge, but every time I install itunes, it puts it on the C:\ drive even though I specified the other drive.
Is there any way to completely install and run iTunes from a slave drive?
    Thanks in advance.

I tried moving the library but no dice either, which is weird because I used to run the library off an external HD and it worked fine.
When I try to move the library and change the directory in itunes it just changes everything I click back, as soon as I close the window. There is no "apply" button or anything so I'm at a loss...

First, you need to verify that D: point to your slave drive. You can do that in WinXP Disk Management. Do you have any valuable information you need in the slave drive? If no, just go ahead and format it. Did you also mention the slave drive had a OS for previous system? If yes, change the boot sequence settings in the BIOS and let it boot to your slave drive. Perhaps from there you can save some data. If not, well, just go ahead and format it.

  • "Slave" drive not appearing

So I just tossed a couple new HD's in my G4. The drives are:
1 - 120GB hooked up to G4's built in IDE cable
1 - 320 GB Drive hooked up to IDE Controller card as primary/master drive
and both show up w/ no issues on boot
BUT then here's where it gets interesting:
I have the other two drives hooked up to the second slot on the IDE Controller card on one cable as Master/Slave. I have checked jumpers, cable position, etc over and over again, but no matter what I do, only one or the other will appear on the desktop/disk utility/etc. I've gone so far as to switch up the jumpers to every conceivable permutation as well.
In the end it just seems if I set one drive to master and the other to slave, the slave drive will never appear.
It is most definitely not a power issue, and right now I'm pretty much stumped.
    Any help appreciated
    cheers

Hello, I am not sure if you are aware of this but,
New hard drives transfer data faster than the old drives. Because over the years the speeds have increased, motherboards can run hard drives at different speeds, known as ULTRA DMA MODES / ATA MODES.
EG, Seagate barracuda 80GB ATA 133
When plugging a hard drive to the motherboard the BIOS can detect the hard drive speed, in effect this sets the hard drive transfer rate on the IDE cable.
    So ATA MODE 6 = DMA133.
Your new hard drive is capable of this.
Now by plugging an older hard drive on the same IDE cable, you are making the cable run with 2 different speeds, as the 12Gb drive is probably UDMA 33, MODE 2.
This can cause interference within the IDE cable and in extreme cases cause data loss. Sometimes the Faster drive will be set to match the slower DMA MODE.
An 80pin IDE cable reduces the interference but you still may get problems especially with the difference in Hard drives. (very old and very new).
So you should remove the OLD 12Gb drive and leave the new drive on the Cable IDE1. If you buy another drive, which is UDMA 133 then you can put it on the same cable, IDE1.
That is also why everyone/manufacturers state run CD drives on a different cable than hard drives, because CD drive run at DMA mode 2.

  • Slave drive, CDs, USB drives, Disk Images and FW drives fail to mount

Hi. I have two Maxtor internal hard drives (6Y160P0 and 6Y120P0), the second of which (6Y120P0) all of a sudden will not mount on the desktop. When I reboot my Mac, I get two identical error windows that state, “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer”, with options to initialize, ignore, or eject. (There are no other drives of any type connected to the computer).
Within Disk Utility (when run from the primary hard drive), the slave drive shows up, but its icon is dimmed. Clicking the “Mount” button does nothing. Disk First Aid does not allow one to “Repair Permissions” nor “Repair Disk”, presumably since it won’t mount (eg, these options are dimmed). One odd aspect about Disk Utility is that the master and slave drive are listed as “disk0s10” and “disk1s10”, respectively, rather than the way they usually show up with the names I’ve given them. Yet on the desktop the working master drive shows up with its given name.
When I run Disk Itility from a CD, both internal drives look fine, accept repairs, and the drives are listed by their proper names.
As another interesting clue, all of the Disk Images (stored on the working master internal hard drive) that I have attempted to mount fail to open as well. When I doubleclick them, I get an error that reads, “The following disk images failed to mount: Reason: No mountable file systems”.
Two different USB keychains fail to mount; my FW drive fails to mount.
I’ve run Applejack Auto Restart without any difficulty several times.
Apple's Hardware check CD says all is AOK.
I’ve rebuilt this problematic disk (and the master) several times with Disk Warrior 3.03 and all is supposedly AOK.
SmartReporter says both disks are fine.
TechTool Pro 4.1.2 has run the following checks on the problem disk and these are AOK: Disk Controller, SMART, Read/Write.
All of this makes me wonder if the issue is with my system software, rather than the slave disk??? Interestingly, CDs refuse to mount as well when I've booted from the primary hard drive (but I don't think it is the CD drive itself since I can boot from the CD drive). This, coupled with the fact that disk images won't mount, makes me now think it is an OS issue rather than hardware.
Any suggestions about what I can do to salvage and fix this problem would be greatly appreciated!
    G4/867MHz running OS 10.4.8

If anyone else is having this problem, check out the totally awesome post by GNJ to my similar query on the MacFixIt forums:

His suggestion to run the 10.4.8 combined PPC update worked like a charm and solved the problem perfectly!
PS If you are having the same issue, there is the problem that one can't use a USB/FW drive to get the combo updater onto the problematic hard drive, and even if you can, the faulty software won't allow one to mount a .dmg image. This can be solved by using "Target" mode, eg connect the problematic CPU to a working CPU (in this case, my PowerBook) via a FW cable, then boot up the problem CPU while holding down the letter "t". One can then drag the combined updater unstuffed file (eg, not the .dmg) directly to the problematic disk from the working CPU. Then, when I booted in the problematic disk/CPU, all it took was a doubleclick on the unstuffed updater and all was fine.

  • Itunes library on slave drive

    Hi everyone,
    Thanks in advance.
I have just transferred the itunes library onto a slave drive to try and free up space on my c drive.
The system works but when I move from track to track I get poor quality sound for a second or two. The itunes software is on the c drive and I have just upgraded to 7.6. My pc runs xp.
I hope this enough info for some help.

Copy the iTunes library.xml to the desktop.
Open it and edit the path of the songs and change them to the new location.
Then open iTunes and File -> Library -> Import the xml file you edited on the desktop.

  • 2nd HD (slave drive)

I'll try to get this all out without to much rambling!
My original 60GB HD was maxed out, so I recently installed a 2nd internal HD (western digital 250GB) as a slave drive. I want to install my OS (tiger) onto this slave drive. This new drive does contain picture & music backup. Does this data need to be removed to install Tiger? Do I need to change the slave setting? Should I clear the drive and partition it?
    Reason:
I recently installed iLife '08. This was required to be installed on the original 60G HD because this is where the os is. When I imported my pictures (all stored on the new WD 250G HD) to iPhoto, it copied them to the 60G HD...NOT ENOUGH ROOM! Thus, the photo library is incomplete.
I'd like to install Tiger to the new 250 Hd and boot up from there, install iLife there, and be off and running.
Is this all possible? Does this make sense? Or am I being ignorant to some simpler solutions? I am open to all suggestions. Thank you much!
    Running OS X 10.4.11 on G4 Quicksilver, 933MHz, 2MB L3 cache, 1.12 GB ram, 60GB HD, 250 HD

I don't use iPhoto but it's not set up like iTunes where you can set preferences to keep your iTunes library and media on a different drive? (I just started iPhoto with the option key held down and it asked me which library I wanted to use, so I think it can.) Lots of people keep all their iTunes library contents on separate drives because they have inadequate space on their internal drives. With iTunes you can drag the library folder to a different drive, then start iTunes with the option key held down to tell it the new location of the library. Also set things up in preferences.

  • Primary slave drive not recognized

    Here is my setup:
    MSI 865 Neo2 motherboard
WD 80GB SATA hard drive (primary master)
Maxtor 3400 11.5GB hard drive (want it to be the primary slave)
    DVD/CD-RW combo drive (secondary master)
    Zip Drive (secondary slave)
The WD SATA hard drive is hooked up to SATA1.  The secondary drives are hooked up to IDE2.  The Maxtor drive is the only thing not working correctly, and is currently hooked up to IDE1.
    - I've tried no jumpers to set the drive as slave
    - I've tried the cable select jumper with the slave position on the IDE cable
    - The drive isn't recognized in Windows or BIOS
    - When hooked up to IDE2, it's recognized (so I know the drive CAN function)
    - I have successfully(?) messed with BIOS to the point where the drive is recognized by Windows, but then my DVD/Zip drives become the 4th master and slave
I think that it's a BIOS setting thing, but I don't know enough about BIOS to get it to work properly.
    Thanks.

This will probably be fixed with a reformat. The computer does not recognize this hard drive as the boot-to hard drive. Somehow either the MBR became corrupt or you just need to go old school with your cabling system.

Let me just say that NO JUMPERS means cable select....
Have you ever tried putting the devices in the correct positions on the cables? Although this is an older solution, you are using a legacy method anyway.

    Second position: Slave

  • I am changing my hard drive and want to copy my old hard drive to the new one.

I went to the apple store with a bad hard drive in my macbook pro. The apple store said change the hard drive, they did, but I wanted to save the old hard drive to get everything off of it. So, I borrowed a sata enclosure and I was able to get everything from the orignial drive (which wasn't really broken) onto my external harddrive. Then I started up the Computer, but didn't use the Migration Assistant (Dumb, I know). Now I need to get everything that was on the original drive and put it where it is suppose to go. Is there a simple solution?

If this external drive is a boot drive (has the OSX on it), you can swap it into your MBP or use Disk Utility>Restore to clone the data to the internal MBP HDD.
    Ciao.

  • Change of reconciliation account in vendor master

    Dear Friends,
Can anybody tell whether we can change a reconciliation account in vendor master or not.
If we can change then what is the procedure of changing.
    Regards
    Rahul Jain

    Hello,
You can change the recon account for a vendor/customer by transaction code XK02/XD02. The original transactions remain in the original recon account. After reconciliation change in customer/vendor will be posted to new reconciliation accounts and whatever old line items in the vendor/customer accounts will not change from old reconciliation accounts. If once cleared, manually you have to clear those open items from old reconciliations before shifting to new reconciliation accounts.
    Thanks

  • Changing the "Reconciliation Account" in the master data of a Customer

    Hi All,
I've to change the "Reconciliation Account" in the master data of a Customer. But this fiel has been made not modifiable.
Could anyone tell how change this?
    Thanks,
    Gandalf

    Hi,
In SPRO, change the field status for the customer account group to optional. Then you can change the reconciliation account of the customer.
    The Path -
SPRO>>Financial Accounting (New)>>Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable>>Customer Accounts>>Master Data>> Preparations for Creating Customer Master Data>>Define Account Groups with Screen Layout (Customers). Here select the account group for the customer and double click on the line. In this screen, double click on Company code data. Then change the field status in Account management for Reconciliation account.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks and Regards,
