Changing/Adding Numbers to the Network/Dial-Up Connection Thing-a-ma-bob...

I would like to do this:
*Put these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers...*
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
But I am scared to death to try. I get connected without a hitch now, and I do NOT want to disturb that!!! I don't know what I am doing with this, but if it will improve the speed and stability of my dial-up connection so I can successfully download and install my updates, I will risk it.
How much chance do I have of messing my connect-ability up altogether?
And how do I go about doing it properly?
Cyan

99.999999% safe and easy to undo, but to make it even nearer 100%...
In the Network Pref Pane, choose the Location drop down, choose Edit Locations, then choose Duplicate... now you have one you can paste those numbers into, and just switch Locations back if need be without changing any numbers.
It's safe though anyway really.:-)

    Hi folks,
When I call createTempFile("filename", ".dat") it is adding numbers to the prefix. In my temporal directory I get a file called "filename34486.dat" instead a file called "filename.dat"! Do you know why ?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance. If you wanted a file named explicitly "filename.dat", then don't use createTempFile - that's for creating, well, temporary files with a (hopefully) unique name so as to not collide with other processes who might also be trying to create temporary files of the same name pattern.

The power went out and when it returned the network name and password was lost.  I can see the network in my connections and connect to it.  How do I get it back to the orginal name and password? I have an HP laptop.

Chances are, there was a signficant power surge or voltage fluctuation just before the power went out. This type of thing can cause the AirPort Extreme to reset back to default settings.
If this occurs, your only option is re-configure the device again, just as you did originally.
In order to improve your chances this next time this happens, (especially if you live in an area where thunderstorms are severe), a good quality surge suppressor / voltage limiting power strip will really help, and may save you the entire device or a nearby computer next time something like this occurs.

  • Apple TV connects to the network but cannot connect to the internet.

Apple TV connects to the network but cannot connect to the internet. Works on other Apple TV's we have just not this new one. Defective???  Thank you!

    This might help:
Apple TV (2nd gen.) saw my wireless network but did not accept my password (gave a network error message). It fixed instantly doing this:
Made a note of the Apple TV's MAC address. Get it by pressing Menu on the remote, then Settings > General > About. It's called "WiFi address."
Use your browser on a network connected computer to go to your router settings (usually 192.168.1.1).
Under "Wireless > Wireless MAC Filter" (or something similar) do these steps:
    Enable Wireless MAC filter
Enable "Permit PCs listed below to access the wireless network"
Enter the Apple TV's MAC address
    Click "Save Setting"
When I did this the network connection immediately started working.

  • The most Arch way of changing MAC before starting the network

Hello friends! Congrats to me , today I'm entering the Arch World!
Before installing on real hardware, I decided to give it a try in VirtualBox. I'm excited, Arch is so simple and cool!
I have 3 questions so far.
    1. My provider locks the accounts to MAC addresses, so I must set the correct one before contacting the dhcp server of the provider, where should I insert the mac changing command or maybe I must create a script and execute in the DAEMONS section of the rc.conf before the network?
    2. Currently I'm running other Linux distribution and I have several XFS filesystems which I want to keep (i.e. mounted under /opt, /data/music, /data/vm, etc..) and some other XFS partitions which I would like to format for using with Arch (i.e. /boot, /home, /, /usr, /var) and also would like to encrypt them (and also the swap). How can I do that? And is it possible to encrypt also the partitions where there is already some data (e.g. /data/docs)?
    3. Do I need separate /usr/local ? For example, under DragonFly BSD the user installed packages are going to /usr/local, the original system ones are in /usr, so it's OK to have a small /usr and a large /usr/local, but for example, in Ubuntu everything go to /usr and /usr/local remains unused. What about Arch?
    Thank you.
    Added after 5 minutes:
Oh, I forgot to ask about one more thing, is there some way of installing Arch without IPv6 support or I must disable it after installation? Thanx.
    Last edited by arch_archer (2010-05-19 23:13:07)

ipv6 is a kernel module (there's a bunch of net modules, for different protocols like bluetooth), and you can blacklist it after you install to keep it from being loaded
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IPv … the_Module
also, the only thing that's going to end up in /usr/local is stuff you put there yourself (scripts, etc), the arch way is to use pkgbuilds/makepkg rather than make and make install, so afaik the only things that might end up there by installing things are symlinks to /opt in a few packages
EDIT: about /usr, unless you plan on mounting it as read-only or different mount options than /, I would just leave it as part of / (just a personal preference though)
EDIT2: here's an article on encryption, you might find what you need there http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sys … r_dm-crypt

My ipod connects to my itunes and it even goes through the syncing process, but it isn't adding any of the new music in my library! My settings mean that all my library is supposed to be synced, but it isn't putting new music on my ipod. Anyone know any way to fix this, please?

  • When I connect imac to network via airport all devices on the network lose internet connectivity

Every device stays connected to the network but the internet stops working. Usually the network will continue to function normally for about five minutes when the imac connects, but then every device loses internet access via the network, NOT just the imac. As soon as I turn off the imac's airport they get internet connectivity back. A wired network connection to the imac seems to work OK.
The airport is configured as "Using DHCP"
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
As far as I know, no changes have been made to the computer recently (but it is not my machine and the owner isn't here atm)
I found one other resource with the same problem here:

but the solution didn't work. When I deleted the three files mentioned in the solution in that thread, my problem is not solved.
If you have any ideas or need more information I would love to hear from you.

  • SOLVED! HP Officejet 6500A E710 will not stay connected to the network. scanner not connected

After 5 hours of live remote HP tech support, and 10 more hours of web searching, I am happy to say I have solved the wireless network connection issue with scanning and printing using the HP Officejet 6500A E710n-z.  I notice that there are a lot of people with similar issues with no common, successful fix.  Here is what worked for me.
    Background Info:
Upgraded internet service from 9Mbps to 27Mbps...Provider brought out new Arris DG860 modem/router.  Configured network and connected all clients (smart phones, PCs, Tablets, etc) successfully accept the printer.  With this new router/modem the printer/scanner/fax would not connect to my PC at all (Windows 7 64-bit).  The Officejet was always connected to the network, however, anytime I tried to print I would get an error "Unable to connect to the printer...", and when I made an attempt to scan.."Scanner not connected, make sure it is connected to the network..." blah blah blah.
    Process:
After searching the web for solutions with no success, I finally made my first call to HP tech support.  Tech tried numerous fixes: many network changes (channel, static IP, etc.), made changes to Windows system settings and registry, installed new software and drivers, ran the scan doctor, partial, semi, and full reset on the printer.  He changed my wifi channel to 6 (or 11) from AUTO and whola.  That seemed to fix the problem.  After hanging up the phone 10 minutes later "No connection" errors again.  Made a second call to HP Tech Support, and this new tech basically tried all the same fixes as the first tech.  Worked again for 10-15 minutes then disconnected.  Made third call to tech and this individual tried the same fixes as the previous two, but to no avail.  He said he would have to direct me to a more Advanced Technician and would call back tomorrow.  They called back the next day, and this new tech fixed the issue within 20 minutes.
    Problem/Solution:
The fourth "more advanced" tech made one change in my network configuration settings.  He changed my network mode from B/G/N to B/G and now the printer/scanner/fax stays connected and works like brand new.  The only problem is that all my devices (including the Officejet) are 802.11N capable.  Setting my network to the old B/G mixed mode slows my speed down just a bit.  Using B/G/N mode or N, my download speed is 27 Mbps.  On B/G mixed my speed is 25Mbps.  Not too big of a deal, though.  All the HP Support Techs were very nice and helpfull.  They refunded my $25 Tech fee [fee charged when product is out of warranty] because the problem is not "technically" solved, even though it does work.  Conclusio:  This seems to be an issue with my the modem/router provided by my ISP.  Could also be that it is an older Officejet and need to upgrade.    To Fix Follow the Steps Below:
Step 1:  Find your default gateway IP...usuall 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or similar.  Type this IP into your web address bar and hit enter.
Step 2:  Enter the username and password.  This is normally set at factory default --> username: admin ....passowrd: password .... or .... admin
Step 3: Go to the "Wireless Setup" tab and under the "Advanced Options" and "Wireless Network Settings" change the "Wireless Mode" to "B/G mixed".
Step 4:  Click "Apply" then close the browser.
You may, or may not, lose your wifi connection for a short period while the new settings are applied and you may, or may not, have to power cycle your modem/router.  That's it.  Worked for me and I hope it works for you too.  If you have any questions or comments please feel free to post.

OK, that all sounds right.  Here are a few more router config ideas:
    1. Make sure that 802.11g mode is available, along with others is OK, but 'g' must be present.
    2. Change the channel to 11.
    3. Use WPA or WPA/WPA2 encryption, not WPA2 only.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

Readjust the wireless settings on your router and try to connect your network again.....
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • New MacBook Air having trouble connecting to the network and staying connected

I have an iMac as my prime and a MacBook Air as my remote. My network is all Apple. If I close the lid on my MacBook Air it immediately disappears from finder as a shared resource. However, if on first run though I put it to sleep and then close the lid, it will remain on the network as a shared resource. From hereon in, I can just close the lid to put it to sleep and its fine.
If I restart either computer or both computers, I have to go through the first run routine again. What makes matters worse is I’m trying to do an 11pm Retrospect backup of the Air and if it gets lost from the network Retrospect is unable to find the device. I have to do a locate in Retrospect and then let it do its backup.
I think this putting it to sleep on first run and then closing the lid to maintain stability is just a workaround I accidentally discovered. I don’t think it should be working like this. I think if I just close the lid and let it sleep that way on first run it should remain on the network as a shared resource and I should continue to see it on my iMac in Finder but this isn’t the case.
I’m really looking for opinions on this issue, if others have experienced this and is there anything that can be done about it. I’ve got mixed messages from Apple Tech support but Retrospect tech support said I’m doing everything right. This to me seems like a bug in probably the software. The machine runs fine except for this one little quirk.
    Kerry

Yes its ticked. I’ve worked at this for two weeks and have gone through every iteration I can think of. Apple said that it is normal that the lid has to be open to have the shared resource but as long as on first sleep I put it to sleep first then close the lid it remains in the iMacs finder Window as a shared resource. And I can open and close the lid from thereon in and it is always there as a shared resource and Retrospect can locate it for backups.

  • Time capsule keeps adding numbers to the name

Suddenly, the timecapsule started to add numbers - timecapsulename (1) timecapsulename (2) - to its name. Everything works fine but it is a) annoying and b) it shows multiple entries in the Finder shared column. Do you know how to get rid of this?

I get the error message saying the file could not be downloaded due because there is no enough disk space.

    Hi All
I currently have a lab in place where I am using multiple Vlans with different Ip ranges using SVI's
I want to add a stand alone AP with the core switch a cting as the DHCP server.
    i have 2 vlans 10.8.5.0/24 10.8.6.0/24 I have reserved the 1st 10 address in each ranges.

and adding the bridge groups in on both sets of interfaces.
add the BVI 1 interface 10.8.5.9

Is there any way to set a warning when someone tries to open a file that is already in use by another person?
There are about 80 people in the office, so we cannot verbally double check with any efficiency that there are no copies of a Numbers file open when we want to open a file.
There have been cases where people's data have been overwritten because of this problem. We would rather stick with Numbers because of the nice looking reports, but if this problem continues we may migrate to Excel.
