Changing all alert sounds

I have a Macbook Pro 13 with OSX 10.6.8.  Can I change each of the alert sounds?  I changed the alert sound in system preferences but the volume alert sound stayed the same.
Thanks

Oh, ok.  Then search around macupdate to see if you can find a utility that assigns sounds to sytem events.  Such things have been around since OS9 so there must be one or more for OSX.  Whether they are Lion compatible is another story.
As for the beep sound when you change the volume, I never heard anyone complain about  that   The general user-level answer is no you cannot change that.  The hacker answer is, it's your machine you can hack it any way you please.  Hint, it's a aiff sound file buried in the system somewhere and referenced by the sound preferences.  But if you change it (a) it is not clear who else might be using it since it is not in the sound preferences itself and (b) it will only be clobbered when some future apple update comes along to update the code containing that aiff.  So bottom line, forget about it.

  • Can i change calendar alert sounds?

I have an iPhone 3G. I want to use it as a PDA and need a reasonably loud and long alert sound for some events. Is there a way of changing the alert sound in calendar events from the default short beeps?

I can't believe you expect people to look up what sound the alert makes before they buy the phone? Really are you a moron? I too am upset with this, I use my state of the art phone that can pretty much do anything for the basic feature of a scheduler and miss everything I put in the **** calender because the alert reminder is so **** quite and only beeps once. Back when I had a 2G jailbroken iphone it was great because I used a hacked program to make a nice loud alarm that repeated up to 3 times in 5min intervals. Much like Palm has been doing for, oh I don't know 10 years! Apple should concentrate less on the marketing side of things with this phone and work more on the functional, it was better when it was jailbroken because you didn't have to wait a lifetime for apple to get around to making the things that people actually need instead of the extra fluff they could live without, at least when it was jailbroken other people fixed all the mistakes that apple left behind.
I didn't mean to get off on a tangent but it bothers me that a company trying to create such a good product would overlook all the basic necessities to a multimedia device. While I'm at it copy/paste anyone? or heaven forbid AD2P! I mean they did strive to create the best portable multimedia device on the planet you'd think they'd put such a useful feature that even the Motorola razer has!
Enough bells and whistles guys, next update lets work on something we can actually use for more than a day.

  • Ipad change calendar alert sound

Is there a way, or 3rd party product, to change the alert sound in the calendar on the iPad? Apple has become way too popular at work, just about everyone has an iPad or an iPhone synced with their outlook calendars. The problem is that when the alert goes off I have no idea if it is mine or someone elses, as they all sound the same.

Settings>Sounds>Calendar Alerts. There are a bunch of sounds from which you can choose.

  • Changing Trash Alert Sound

How do you change the trash alert sound? I want to make it different than the default trash noise, so does anyone know how to change the default alert noise it makes when you move something to the trash or empty the trash? Thanks.

    Hello iam:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Pay particular attention to red's information here:

Unless you are experienced with UNIX and operating systems, I strongly suggest you NOT mess with system files.

  • Except for telephone ringtone, all alerts sound for only a few seconds following latest os update

After updating my Z10 to the latest operating system this week, I found that alerts for my BBM, Wotsapp, Sms and email only sound for about 8-10 seconds.  My ringtone for calls is played in full though.
All of the alerts used the correct tones (.mp3 tracks); nevertheless, I reset them by navigating each app to the correct alert.  But nothing changed.
Is there a way to resolve this please?  I need more time to hear an alert when not in a quiet environment.
Has anyone else had the same problem?
    Many thanks.

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • Only get to change the alert sound in Sound Themes in GNOME.

Okay, so I get sick and tired of my current sound theme, decide to go change it and go into Volume Control, since for no apparent reason the GNOME devs wanted to inflict more pain my putting the sound settings in there in 2.26.
    I am greeted with this:
Where's the rest of the settings? If I can't change it in this box, where can I find my theme settings in gconf-editor?

    z5rz wrote:
I have been trying to figure this out myself..  This may help somewhat.
The sound conf files are in /etc/sound/events.   Each event, ie "login", shows a specific .wav file.
The .wav files are in /usr/share/sounds.   I am assuming you just drop the sounds in here that you want to use and then change the sound file reference in the event files.
The interesting thing, is that the sound event files do not reference the actual sound file locations, just the name of the sound file.   I have not idea what file is driving that.....
I haven't had time to goof around with this yet.   I have been trying to find these for a while.   All the references on the web, point to a "sound" program in gnome which is not in Arch.   Some of the other distros, like Fedora have it in there.
Not in arch? That's not good. Maybe this should be a bug report, then?

  • Changing the alert sounds

I am new to the IMAC from the PC world. I am enjoying my quad G7 IMAC. I would like to change the sound when I receive new email, and when the computer alerts for an error. How do I do that with the IMAC. Thanks

    Hi & welcome
Go to the Apple symbol in the upper left of the screen click and scroll down to System Preferences>Sound>Sound Effects and choose your new alert.
For e-mail, it depends on what program you use, if Apple Mail:Preferences (under the Mail heading in the menu bar)>General>New Messages Sound

  • PSA: in iOS 7.1.1, alert sounds are tied to your media/game volume and not to your ringer volume

I was befuddled by this for a long time.
Alert sounds would just stop making noise.  This includes dings from txt messages and new mail.
If I went to Settings>Sounds>Text Tone and select several options, all I would get were vibrations.
I rebooted the phone and toggled the silence switch on and off.
I finally figured out that if I started a game and turned the volume up, the noises would come back.
I think it is reasonable for a user to wish to play a game on mute but still hear alert messages.
I think if we can only have two separate systems for audio control, the alert sounds should be tied to the ringer, not to the media/game sounds.
When I spoke to an apple support person over online chat, they seemed to agree that this sounds like a bug.
I have seen many confused posts in these forums regarding alert sounds suddenly disappearing.
Below is the text that I submitted at http://www.apple.com/feedback/
If you share this problem, I suggest you do the same.
    My case number is 606343836
    Begin message:
I've had a 5S since a few weeks after launch and this problem has only come about in the last few weeks, so I suspect it has to do with a recent OS patch.
Sometimes my alert messages just stop working.  They seem to work one minute, then they stop.  Alert messages would include email notifications and txt message pings.  When they are not working, I can go into Settings>Sounds>Text Tone, and all of the options will simply result in a vibration and no sound.
Rebooting the phone does not fix the problem.
What I have found to fix the problem is to open a game and raise the volume of the game.  Then when I exit the game, alert messages start again.
This seems reversible, if I go back in and mute a game, my alert messages go away as well.
If this is by design, I do not think it should be, as I think it is reasonable for a user to want to control the "media" part of the volume separately from the "ringer" and "alerts" part of the volume. It makes sense to want play a game or video on mute but still get alert messages. If anything, I think the alerts volume should be tied to the ringer volume, I think that would make sense.

Additional info, which makes me think this is a bug rather than a feature.  If you go into Settings > Sounds and turn off the "Change with Buttons" option, then the ringer should always ring at the volume of the slider on the screen.
The volume buttons now appear to only affect the media/games volume, and it works as expected EXCEPT:
if you are in a game and you mute the volume in the game, then exit the game, all alert sounds are muted and you can't turn them back up by raising the volume with the volume buttons.
If you go back into the game and raise the volume within the game, then exit the game, then alert sounds do turn back on.
I have tested this with two games from two developers.

  • Corrupted alert sounds In Panther on G5

I've got an older G5 that plays a incredibly loud buzzing noise when errors or other alert conditions occur. The terrible sound also presents itself when trying to change the alert sound in Sys Prefs.
I've got two hdds in the machine, each has Panther installed on it. The buzz only occurs on the backup Panther installation. All other sounds play just fine. It's just those blasted alert sounds that make me jump every time.
I've been looking around trying to find out where/how I can reinstall the alert sounds, but haven't found any solutions.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. There is nothing visible in the directory you mention. I tried placing my own .aiff file there to see what happens and the first time I try it or any file after a reboot, they work just fine from Sys Prefs.
I wonder where I would find the alert sounds on the good system? They don't appear to be in System/Library/Sounds/.
If I try to switch the sounds in Sys Prefs, they start to sound worse and worse.
    1. After a reboot, the first file I test in Sys Prefs. sounds good.
    2. As I test each succeeding sound, they each start to degrade to the point that they are nothing but a loud BUZZ.

  • IS THERE A WAY TO CHANGE THE NOTIFICATION SOUNDS FOR REMINDERS?

IS THERE A WAY TO CHANGE THE NOTIFICATION SOUNDS FOR REMINDERS?

Yes you can, in the sense that this is an "Alert" sound you've set for the whole Mac software, and of course this is set in System Preferences > Sounds > Sound Effects. This will change the "alert sound" for the whole Mac.
So, No, you can't change only this particular Alert sound. If you could, it would be done in System Preferences > Notifications, and your only option there is whether you want the sound or not (Chkbox on "Play sound when receiving Notifications")

  • Lose System Alert Sound after Fast User Switching

After switching between accounts a few times I lose all alert sounds from all applications, including the Finder. I can still play music, hear audio from movies, etc., but any alert sound is now silenced. Anyone else know a fix for this?

    I don't have a solution, but I thought I'd mention
I'm having the same problem where the alert sounds
(Finder, Mail, etc.) can no longer be heard so that
the "powers that be" can see that it's a growing
problem and perhaps find a resolution.
I didn't notice this problem until I recently
upgraded to 10.4.4, but I may have simply not noticed
with 10.4.3 since I've always got my iTunes cranked
    up.

I had no problem until 10.4.4 and I do not switch users. But having some knowledge of Unix, I went digging, and I tried a Force Quit on the system process "coreaudiod". Can be found in Activity Monitor - select all processes. iChat started sounding again on its own, and a restart of Mail got it going again. This worked for me (tired of re-booting to fix).
    I hope this helps others

Nobody here would know why Apple has chosen not to allow changing of sounds.
