Changing an ipod from Mac to PC

Is it possible to reformat a classic ipod from Mac to PC? My mother has rejected my old Powerbook and wants to keep her pc(!) but her ipod is synced to the powerbook.
I would like to a) download everything from the ipod to her pc and b) reformat the ipod to work with her pc. Can it be done? Appreciate any and all advice.
Thanks

*I would like to a) download everything from the ipod to her pc*
If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews and has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. You can purchase XPlay at this link: XPlay
*and b) reformat the ipod to work with her pc*
Once you have the contents of the iPod saved to the PC you can restore it in iTunes for Windows. Restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Windows version and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

How do I change my Ipod from mac to windows format?? My Imac is not working at the moment, but I want to use my Ipod on my PC. How do I get my Ipod(mac formated) to get work on my PC??

Use iTunes on the PC to restore the iPod, or install XPlay on the PC without changing the format. Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it.

  • Change my iPod from windows to mac

I am trying to change my iPod from a windows format to a mac. What do I need to do?

My daughter recently got an iPod Nano as a gift. Unfortunately, it was formatted for a PC and we are unable to load songs onto it from our Mac. If we simply reset the Nano, will we have the option to format it for the Mac? I realize we will lose all the content during the reset, but it is more important for her to be able to load her new music from the Mac.

  • Formatting 3rd Gen ipod from Mac to Windows

    Hello.
I need to format a 3rd Gen iPod from Mac to windows for my Father in Law.
So please can anyone tell what the process is?
    Many thanks,

The iPod is formatted for both PC and Mac, I used to use mine with a PC, bought a Mac, plugged it in and it worked with the Mac no problem. I'm not sure that this works both ways though, if you're having problems you could try this link for help: http://ipod.about.com/od/restoreandreformatipod/a/ipod_reformat.htmhttp://

  • Want to change the ipod from win to mac and dont have the PC anymore

My PC where I had my Library was stolen. Now I bought a Mac and cannot save all my music and videos from my iPod to my new Mac. What can I do??

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • How do I change my iPod from Windows to Mac ?

When I got my IPod, my music was on a windows computer. Now I have a MacBook Pro and want to convert my Ipod nano to the Mac. How can I do this as I am new to the IPod and very new to the MacBook?

Connect it to your Mac and restore it. Just be aware that restoring will erase and reformat the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7
If you haven't transferred the music from your PC to the Mac and you have any iTMS purchases on your iPod the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • Just bought a mac.. want to change the ipod from win to mac

how can i do that and save the playlist, purchases, etc ??

You can transfer all of your song files from iPod to Mac using a third-party utility. Macs can read the Windows format, so it should work even if the iPod is formatted for Windows.
The free utility of choice for Mac seems to be Senuti.

Try a software e.g. Xplay2, which allow your PC to read your Mac formatted iPod. However, the following is my suggestion:-
    1. Make sure all your songs are still with your Mac.
    2. Follow Stealth01's suggestion, do a Restore on a PC
    3. Your PC formatted iPod will now be able to be read by both PC and Mac
    4. Do an update of your iPod with your Mac
    5. Once it has been completed, use a 3rd party software e.g. YamiPod

  • Ipod from Mac to PC

To make a long story short, I have a mac formatted ipod. I also have a ton of music on my pc and I want to use my ipod as a hard disk to transfer the pc songs to my mac.
Can someone please provide me with detailed steps on how to accomplish this task.
I have searched the forums, but I can not find specifically what I need.
    Thanks!

About 18 months ago I managed to get all the songs from my Mac formatted iPod onto my XP work PC without any 3rd party apps. I now have a new job and new work PC (Fister this time) and need to go through the process again. Only I can't remember how I did it.
But I think it involved putting the iPod into disk mode, transferring the songs to the PC and then reformatting the iPod. It involved erasing the iPod but as all the songs were on my Mac it was simply a case of leaving it to have all it's songs re-transferred.
Perhaps I had to intially change the disk format to to a PC compatible format?
So would it work by doing the following?:
    1) reformat iPod to be PC compatible (done through iPod updater on PC)
    2) sync iPod on Mac (with iPod HD in PC format)
    3) put iPod on Disk Mode
    4) drag and dropc songs onto PC
    5) plug iPod back in to Mac and Restore
It would take a while to do (I have almost 30GB of songs) and wouldn't allow syncing but it would allow me to have a lot of my music with me at work
I also have an external Lacie drive which backs up my iMac. Would I just be able to copy over my music library from Lacie drive to PC, perhaps using Fister's Sync Center?

  • Switching iPod from Mac to PC

I have a 60 GB video iPod that I originally formatted using my iMac G5 in December last year. My wife uses it primarily, and she has a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP. She has been relying on me to update her iPod but now wants to do it herself so she can have her own library and use her laptop to shop on iTunes.
So my question is: if you were me, what would be the simplest, most efficient way to get the songs she currently has on her mac-formatted iPod into a library on her PC? Should I just bite the bullet and rip all her CDs again onto her laptop, then reformat the iPod? (There's about 10 GB on her iPod)
Is there a way to save the music she already has on her iPod somewhere, reformat the iPod, and then somehow reload the saved files onto her PC?
What would be ideal would be just to plug in the iPod into her PC, and have iTunes recognize it as is, but I know that's probably not possible. Is it?
Maybe we should just get her a new laptop ...

Personally a new Mac Portable sounds like a good option I might be a little biased in that regard.
    However, here is the steps:
    1) Formate the iPod for Windows by restoring it on her computer
    2) Follow the steps in this article to transfer your music over using the iPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173 for iTunes 7
    or
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304304 for iTunes 6
    3) Then update the iPod from her Windows-based PC

  • How do I change my ipod from a windows to a mac?

I bought a new video ipod and a new mac computer for my daughter this winter. Her old ipod (a mini) is linked to my computer (a PC), and I wanted to know if there was any way to get the songs from her old ipod, which is linked to my computer, onto her new computer and then be able to upload them onto her new video ipod. Basically, she wants to have her old songs on her new computer.
Does anyone know how to do this?

You cant upload songs from your ipod. I have a laptop and a computer, and i like to have the same music on both computers, so i bought an mass capacity external drive and just transfer songs from one computer to another.
If you dont want to spend money on an external drive, depending on the amount of songs, wou could make an mp3 cd. I dont have a Mac so i dont know if this would work. MP3 Cds allow you to hold a lot more spongs than a WAV cd. You could burn all the songs to a cd in mp3 format and then burn the songs on that cd to the new computer.

  • HT1399 I want to change my ipod from our Mac computer upstairs to the PC in the basement. How do I do that without loosing my songs?

I have an older ipod shuffle. It was originally sinced to the MAC upstairs. I want to add it to my itunes account and sync it to my PC in the basement and not loose my songs.

Copy the library from the Mac to the PC.
Or copy the media from the Mac to the PC and add it to the library you've already got there.
Or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
