Changing appearance of screen-name in chat window

My name shows up in the chat window as my whole name. Why??? I'd rather it just say my screen name. How do I change it?

iChat takes this name for the spot at the top of the Buddy List.
It takes the Buddy list details from iChat if you have just a Buddy's screen name and from their card in the Addres Book if you added Real Names.
The Exception is that when registering an AIM name you can choose how it is displayed.

Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

JAWS Screen Reader and Chat Window in AdobeConnect

Hello, I recently hosted a webinar for a group of people with disabilities from around the world. I noticed that the blind and low vision participants were not participating in the chat window and followed up with one of them afterwards. A participant from India who uses JAWS screen reading technology said:
"I didn’t face much of accessibility issues, but somehow I couldn’t use the Chat Window. As you had made me aware, I understand, that it should have been accessible with JAWS, but somehow, I couldn’t use it. May be, it is accessible with an upgraded version of JAWS."
Is there a certain version of JAWS that users must have in order to be compatible with the Chat window feature? Or might it have been user error? Let me know if there are any tips that we can give to future webinar attendees, as we often have participants with various disabilities. Thank you!

A much longer and broader thread on Connect & accessibility is at http://webaim.org/discussion/mail_thread?thread=4392. You may want to mine some information and see if it is useful. Unfortunately, a user could not use Connect UI with JAWS. Could be some edge case or a bug.
If and when you use Connect via JAWS, please do share your experience and feedback in this thread.

Change appearance of the inactive VI's windows

Hello!
I'm working on a software which calls different sub-VIs and they all open as new windows in front of the main one. The problem is that those windows are usually smaller than the parent VI and sometimes the amount of controls you see on the screen is a little annoying. You would see the parent VI on the area which the new window doesn't covers. What I would like to do is to have the parent VI change it's brightness or maybe have some "fog effect" on it in such a way that what calls your attention is the currently active VI. Please apologize for the confusing explanation, but I'm not sure how to make myself "understandable". I found an article explaining how to change the background color of the VI, however, I have an image as the background of the application, so the color change would have no effect. What I want is something similar to what happens when Windows Vista asks you for administrative rights to proceed with some action, when all the remaining screen gets darker and that brings your attention to the dialog box.

The transparency property works perfectly fine in Windows 7. It can be found at VI.Front Panel Window>>Transparency, but you should note there's another boolean property there which you need to set to T if you want it to actually work. Also, its scale is 100-0 as opposed to the 0-255 you currently have. I would say it's better to use it because it's built in and should work on all platforms.
I can say that the Windows function has one nice advantage in that you can use it to set one color in a window completely transparent, thus creating a hole in the window (which you can click through to what's under the window. This allows creating shaped windows fairly easily.
Also, that demo was written as a test. As you can see it's messy and it has code which was placed there to work around display issues in older LV versions. If you're going to use it, I would suggest cleaning and debugging it (and then maybe uploading the updated code).

Bridge Randomly Changed Appearance of Folder Names...

I searched for an answer to this problem for 10 minutes, but I couldn't find anything. So, here I am.
Ok, so, my copy of Bridge CS5 4.0.0.529 used to show the names of my folders very similar to how Finder does. Meaning that the name of the folder used to just be right under the folder itself.
Well now, all of a sudden and for no apparent reason, Bridge puts the name of my folder in a "bubble" like label OVER the folder. You may be thinking, "Wow, this guy is way too picky." Well, that's not the major problem. The major problem is that Bridge decided to do it for SOME folders, and not others. So, to find a folder, I now have to select one, and scroll left or right until I find the folder I want as it won't give me the name of the folder unless it is selected.
I'm losing my mind!
It will, however, show the name of all of the folders if I make the icons at the bottom, HUGE, but that's stupid. I don't want to make them huge. I prefer to have them small, and my images large. I also refuse to use Bridge in any mode besides Filmstrip. For me, it's the best way to use Bridge.
Can anybody help me get it back to the way it was?

GOT IT! Just went up to "output" and hit "reset standard workspaces".
If I may add a few observations:
The behavior you are showing in the screenshots is typical for having set the content panel to 'show thumbnail only'. It is under the view menu and might also have occurred with hitting accidentally the cmd/ctrl + T key combination.
Resetting workspace also set's the thumbnail info per your setting in the Bridge preferences settings for Thumbnail/details. Just try it once to check
Another mayor point is that you did not ran the updater end still have the first version instead of the latest release 4.0.5.11, You will benefit from that update, be sure to have also the ACR 6.6 plug in installed, the 6.5 plug in did cause some bugs.
I also believe (not sure, long time ago) that the updater solved the problem you are seeing with some folders with and some without names.

Why is my on screen name not changing

I logged in and changed my login name yesterday [email protected], this worked ok
I also changed my on screen name, but it has not changed.
I saved it and when i go into my account preferences it has changed, but it has not changed on the upper right of my screen or it hasn't changed when i post any messages

Why oh why are the easiest things in life becoming so difficult.
It's not just the cost of a call, but the time and energy i have to put into this, when i already had a 15 minute
chat online with support and they couldn't help. Plus the issue with downloading trials with the download manager
which wasted 2-3 hours of my day to get the ftp links that could just be put on the web site instead..
Can someone in Adobe just fix this without i having to call and explain everything again.

Just elaborating on Don Archibald's reply.
You also cannot delete your present account. Just stop using it, after you have created a new one.
If you create a new account, your Level(0), Points(0), Total Posts(47), Total Posts Online(47) and Registered Date(5/31/07), will not be transferred.
In the new account, your Post Counts, Points, & Level Status will all start at 0. Your Registered Date will be the date you create the new account.
Your old account, with your previous counts & level, will still be viewable, under the old Alias.
After you quit using the old account, those posts, will be archived. What that means is, that if there are no additional responses in the Threads they reside in, the Topics will get continually pushed down on the Topics list. After a certain amount of time, maybe 2 to 6 months, the Threads will be locked, so no responses can be entered. But the Threads will not disappear.
Threads in heavily trafficked Forums, may be archived more rapidly than those in areas, with less activity.
The Topics that you started using the old account, will show your Old Alias, in the Author field of a main forum page, but eventually, readers will have to keep going to the succeeding pages to view them.
If someone were to do a Discussions Search, using these parameters:
Restrict by Category or Forum: All Categories
Restrict by Date Range: All
Restrict by Username: Your Old Alias
all of your posts, created since about 11/13/05, would be found.
To create a new account,
Log out of Discussions. You also may have to delete the Apple Cookies in your browser preferences, but I'm not sure this is necessary. Then follow either of these instructions.

I have an aol screen name I use to log in to itunes store, but it can not be used on my apple tv as it is not an apple id

my oldest otunes store UN was my AOL screen name, and then when the newwer stuff came out requring an email address it never prompted me to just add that on to the one I already had, so thus another itunes un now known as my apple id was born. My question is I recently bought an apple TV and I have movies and shows on the AOL screen name account that I can NOT access on my apple tv as I do not have an apple id for that account it will not let me sign in to it through the apple tv. I was wondering if there is a way to convert my AOL account into a normal apple id?

I have the same issue. Back in the day, when Apple and AOL had a relationship, AOL users had the ability to use their AOL account screen names and passwords in order to purchase content from the iTunes store. Unfortunately the disconnect resides in the fact chosing that way of signing in and purchasing content didn't actually create a true Apple ID. This results in the ability to still purchase content via iTunes on Mac or PC or on iPhone and iPad, but the inability to sign in with the same account with any other Apple services such as appleid.apple.com or even the Apple Store App.
After the relationship between Apple and AOL dissolved there is no way of turning the AOL account associated with many many purchases into an Apple ID. I've tried every way possible and search long and hard for an answer. There was a way a while ago and the process was that you had to cancel any subscription services with AOL. Apple would realize this and notify you in iTunes saying your AOL account has been deactivated, would you like to make it an Apple ID (this may be the article to which you are referring, HACKINTOSH). Unfortunately this method doesn't work any longer.
However I have found a way for old AOL users to change the account they use to purchase content with into an Apple ID. The answer is iTunes Match. I've tried many other methods and iTunes match seems to be the route to take. When subscribing to iTunes match, iTunes will recognize that the account you're trying to subscribe with is not a true Apple ID and will ask you to change the AOL screen name into an Apple ID.
This is the only way that I have is even close to solving this issue. However I haven't been able to complete the process due to unrelated reasons. Considering iTunes Match is $24.99/year that may not be worth it to just convert an Apple ID. But if you can find a use for subscribing to iTunes Match (which personally I think is a brilliant service), I believe that this will convert the AOL account into an Apple ID.
Let's see what iTunes says as well. I haven't contacted them but if any info is received please let us know!

Changing .mac screen name

I'd like to use iChat through my .mac account but don't want my name showing up with the @mac.com suffix. is there any way to change the screen name used by .mac, or do i have to go get an AIM user name and sign on with that?

You can try at the .mac page and go to your account to see if you can change it but it will still appear as [email protected] as the iChat name.
AIM names can be a bit more annoymous.

When printing an email the subject line appears top left, can I change this to my name ?

Have changed computers & previously my name would appear top left when I printed an email. Work in a large office & all using same printer, so now when I print an email its not so easy to find it.

Select email
File > Print Preview
a window opens showing email to be printed.
click on 'Page Setup' button
click on 'Margins & header/footer' tab
Under 'Headers & Footers'
click on first drop down - and select 'Custom.. '
by default it usually says 'Title' which refers to 'Subject'
A small window opens allowing you to 'Enter your custom header/ footer text'.
Type in your name and click on OK
The preview window will refresh so that you can see the changes.

Cannot get my message to appear in chat window

Hi everyone!
I'm using iChat 3.1.8 on my dual 1.25GHz MDD G4 with OS 10.4.9 and 2GB RAM. More frequently than not, when I'm trying to chat with someone in my Buddy List, I can't get my typed message to appear in the chat window, no matter how many times I hit 'return' on the keyboard.
I've tried quitting out of iChat and restarting the Mac and also deleting the iChat preferences, but the problem still persists. It's really, really frustrating! What can I do to fix the problem? Is this a bug in version 3.1.8 or what? Please advise.. thank you!!!

Hi Sally,
Click on none of your Buddies and open a text chat window (don't type anything)
Now go to the Edit menu
The Text chat window has to be the front window
Select the Spelling option
Change it something and then change it back to Spelling as you go.
There is also a chance it is Font related
Open the Font Book and check Helvetica is active.
Also check the Outgoing Font choice in iChat > Preferences > Messages is active as well.

Framemaker uses $filename for short file name, can we edit this to change appearance? We do not want the short file name of long filename to include the .fm extension can this be removed or modified to make this happen?
