Changing Apple Id to be my Icloud email address?

I have been using my sky.com email address as my Apple Id but I am now trying to stop using that for anything.   The apple web page for changing Apple Id will not let me use my icloud.com address as my apple id - it says it is an apple domain and that apple domains can't be used for apple ids.  Is there any alternative to having two email addresses?
Also my IPhone (3Gs) does not like the icloud email address - when I try to set up the account it comes back and says it can't log onto the me.com imap server with the icloud address. Is icloud email compatable with iphone 3Gs?

JWBL, I am annoyed by exactly the same issue and there are more and more people complaining. See the discussion I created here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20844772?ac_cid=op123456#20844772
Roger, your point is that you should always have a non-Apple email address associated with your Apple ID so Apple can send you login information if you lose your password. That is certainly true. But it does not imply that that non-Apple address has to be the name of your Apple ID. And there is even a way to make an iCloud Address the name of your Apple ID: If you create a completely new Apple ID with the initial setup of an iPhone. But that is of course not an option if you already purchased stuff with your existing Apple ID.
It is not a major problem, but it kind of annoys me that I keep seeing my obsolete Gmail address everywhere after I switched to iCloud and it's just a ridiculous limitations I can't see any reason for.

  • New Apple ID with a new iCloud email address as the ID

Can you get an iCloud email address BEFORE you get an Apple ID? I'd really like to not use my existing Yahoo email as my Apple ID login.
Seems I have to use my old Yahoo email address to get an Apple ID because it's already existing.
If I have to use an existing email address, can I subsequently change my issued Apple ID login to the iCloud email address I would have created after I've got into my new account?
    Thanks anyone.

The problem is that all services are bundled with your Apple ID ([email protected]):
Your iCloud account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Backups, etc.),
also iTunes & App Store purchases (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.),
    and the iTunes Match services.
(I guess that all your devices - yours and your wife's are connected to one iTunes library, right?)
If you want that your wife gets her own iCloud account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. but gets also access to your media then you have two set up two things on her device:
iCloud (Settings > iCloud) with her account (e.g. [email protected])
    and
iTunes & App Stores (Settings > iTunes & App Stores) with your account (e.g. [email protected]).
In this case she gets access to your library and could use the same iTunes Match account.

  • I have a problem. My Apple ID is not my icloud email address my Apple ID is my msn account, but I need to reset the password for my icloud email because I can't remember what it is. How do I do that?

I have a problem. My Apple ID is not my iCloud email, my msn is my Apple ID, but I need to reset the password for my icloud email address because I can't remember what it is. How can do I reset my iCloud emaill password when it's not my Apple ID??

Your iCloud and @icloud.com login ID is an Apple ID. Go to http://appleid.apple.com and sign in with the ID you use to sign into iCloud (you can check this by going to http://www.icloud.com and signing in there).
Click 'Password & Security' in the sidebar and you will be able to change the password.
    HOWEVER
Before you do this you must turn off 'Find My iPhone/iPad/iMac' if you have it enabled on any of your devices, otherwise you will land yourself in difficulties.

  • Can I replace my old Apple ID with my new iCloud email address?

For years, my Apple ID has been associated with an external email address. Now that iCould users are given an "@me.com" email address for free, I would like to use that as my new Apple ID.
When I try to edit my primary email address using these instructions, this is the message I get:
You cannot create an Apple ID using a MobileMe account. If this is your email address, it is also your Apple ID.
I can't really figure out what this means. Is my Apple ID is permanently bound to the external email address? Seems pretty silly that I wouldn't be able to associate my Apple ID with my iCloud email...

Think of your Apple ID that is bound to an external email address as an Anonymous Apple ID account.  The email address can be changed to any other email address that is not an Apple ID, iCloud, MobileMe, Mac, etc. account.  iCloud, MobileMe, Mac, etc. accounts are just Apple ID accounts in disguise.  So the bottom line is no, but you can use both independantly.

  • Apple ID is an icloud email address.  Am I being charged extra for this address. Have been notified that there is a change recently made

Am I being charged extra for my Apple ID which is an icloud email address. Have been notified that there has been a change.?

Apple IDs are free. Your Apple ID is also usable as your iCloud email address. You need not use it as such.

  • How do I delete an iCloud email address that was created under my Apple ID?

I have an Apple ID that is used mostly for iTunes.  My son has an iPod Touch and wanted to create an iCloud email address to use on his iPod.  We created an iCloud email address through my Apple ID, not realizing that now, every time he sends an email, it arrives "from" my name, not his, as the address is attached to my Apple ID and therefore through my account information.  We would like to delete his iCloud email address completely so he can open his own personal Apple ID and recreate his iCloud email address through his own new Apple account.  We deleted the account from his iPod and also deleted it as a second email address on my AppleID account information.  Yet, despite all this, the email address seems to remain attached to my account.  Apple Support website and iCloud support did not give us any ideas.  Help!

    PS:
since I posted this question (above), I have read many other questions posted and it seems I am not alone.  Seems Apple will not allow people to delete an iCloud email address completely from existence!  You can delete it from devices but not from the Apple ID account.  What a disappointment, really.  In my opinion, the "user-friendly" Apple is really frustrating people who simply want to be able to manage their email addresses for various, valid reasons.  Email addresses that have been created should be allowed to be deleted by the creator!  Other email services allow this!
One idea I have that may help others in my situation:  Rather than delete my son's iCloud email address from my Apple ID account, so that his emails come from HIS name not MINE, I might try to just change the name on my AppleID account from mine to his.  He can create a new password too.  Then, in the future, if I want to recreate my own Apple ID, I will.

  • Why can't I use my iCloud Email Address as my Apple ID?

Why won't Apple allow us to use their own @icloud.com domain for an Apple ID. This has upset me since the inception of MobileMe; it makes perfect sense that many people would prefer to use their iCloud email address as there Apple ID. We've all had MobileMe since day one, which is now iCloud; it's been several years, and I still can't do it. Having to frequently log in with an individual Apple ID & Individual iCloud account creates so much confusion, especially with my wife and parents.
I know this is an age old complaint, but it doesn't make it any less relevant. Is there a special way to change my existing Apple ID to my existing iCloud email address? If not, then why won't Apple allow it?

  • Problem saving email preferences for new iCloud email address

I was trying to enter a new email address for iCloud in the Apple Mail program and after clicking save I receive the following message,"Writing your preferences to disk has failed. Your preferences may not have been saved. The permissions on ~/Library/Preferences may be wrong or your disk may be fullI'  I know the disk is not full on my new MacBook Pro. I went into LIbrary/Preferences but could not find the mail preferences.
The preferences have not been saved because every I time I start the computer the new email is missing from my email preferences.
    Thanks for your help.

While you can't currently change your Apple ID to a Mobile/iCloud email address, I found a solution that helps with a related problem.
Suppose you've recently got an iCloud email address, but Apple are still sending all your iTunes Store, App Store and Mac App Store receipts to your old gmail address (the one that's still your Apple ID). And suppose they're also sending all the Apple Support Communities notifcation emails to your old gmail address. How do you change it? How do you fix it?
Well the option exists, but it is hidden away in a weird place. To get Apple sending all of their receipts and notifications to your new iCloud email address...
    • Go to your country's Apple Store website http://store.apple.com/
    • Click on the Account button in the top-right corner
    • Under Account Settings, click on Change your default shipping or billing info
    • Sign in with your usual Apple ID and password
    • The email address listed under Payment Information is the key
    • Click on Edit next to Payment Information and change that email address to your iCloud address
That's all you have to do.

  • The email address used to Sign into my icloud is no longer active, this is different than my apple id email address though. How can I change my icloud email address to my current apple id email address

When I received my iphone 4s 3 years ago the my apple id and icloud email addresses were the same, it was a student email from the college I attended. This account is no longer active, but when I changed my apple id email address to a current email (gmail account) the icloud address didn't change over. I now have no ability to sign into icloud on my phone and icloud hasn't been updated in nearly a year. I wanted to figure out this problem before I upgraded to the Iphone 6 this December. Is there any way this is possible?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You should still be able to use your college email address, just log in with your details.

Your Apple ID and iCloud email address don't need to be the same, you can't change an iCloud email address.
Also check your Mail rules and filtering, the verification mail may be going to a junk folder or even being deleted altogether. You may also wish to contact your mail provider to see if their spam filters are removing the email before it gets to you.

  • Is there a way to change the icloud email address associated with your Apple ID?

I had an Apple ID long before iCloud came around.  Naturally, my username was my email address, let's say [email protected]  I signed up for an @me email address when they started just to try it out, but never used it.  Either by default or by my own decision, my @me account became the same as my old email address: [email protected]  Later, Apple issued the @icloud email addresses, so I now have: [email protected] as well.  I want to set up a different icloud address, one that I would actually use, let's say [email protected]  Then, I would like to associate that address with my Apple ID and delete the oldaddress@icloud address altogether.  Can I do this and if so how?
    Thanks for the advice.

Since your Apple ID is already associated with the current iCloud account (and the account cannot be delete, it can only be abandoned), you can't use it to create another.  You would need to create a new Apple ID with a new non-Apple email address to create a new iCloud account.  You can still use your current ID for everything else; the iCloud ID does not need to be the same as the ID you use for other services (iTunes, etc.).
You would then have to migrate your iCloud data to the new account and turn on your iCloud data syncing.  When you turn Mail to On, you can create your new @icloud email address (but type carefully since once created it cannot be changed).  You @me iCloud email address would remain associated with the iCloud account you are leaving but it sounds like you don't want to use it anyway.  You can set up email forwarding to forwared email sent to your @me address to your new @icloud address while your contacts transition to your new address.
If that sounds like something you want to do, I can give you the steps to migrate your data to the new account.

  • I need to change my iCloud email address.  I changed it for my Apple id but I can't log out of iCloud to change it there.  Find my iPad is activated so I can't delete my iCloud account.  I don't have the email address the iCloud login has anymore.

I need to change my iCloud email address.  I changed it for my Apple id but I can't log out of iCloud to change it there.  Find my iPad is activated so I can't delete my iCloud account.  I don't have the email address the iCloud login has anymore so I can't have the password sent there.  To sum it up, iCloud has an old email for the account log-in.  I don't remember the password for the old email.  I have Find My iPad activated so the iCloud account cannot be deleted.  And I am already logged out of iTunes & App Store.

If you mean that Find My Phone is asking for a password to a different Apple ID to your current Apple IDand that ID is a previous version of your current ID, not an entirely different one.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details and some other circumstances.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID using your current password, you don’t need access to this address if it’s previously been used with your Apple ID, once you have saved these details enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone" and delete the account from your device. It may take a short while to remove the account.
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, save it once again and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

  • How do I change my iCloud email address as it is different to my Apple ID which I recently changed?

I recently changed my Apple ID password however it didn't allow me to change my iCloud email address either so they are both different and I can no longer sign into iCloud, what shall I do to change the email address on my iCloud to the same as my Apple ID one?

You have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
