Changing bit depth/greyscale palette in Photoshop CS4

Hi,
I have Photoshop CS4 and I am trying to reduce a 256 greyscale palette to a 16 greyscale palette for a greyscale gif image. It is set at Indexed Color.
How do I do this?
I have tried to search for this information online, but I have had no success.
Thank you!

Hi,
Could you give me a step by step how to do that?
Do I go to Image -> Mode?
I cannot find the palette in Photoshop to change from 256 to 16.
I am a beginner in Photoshop, thank you!

  • Changing bit depth

Is there any way of changing bit depth in A3? I scan 48 and 16 bit TIFs and would like to drop certain pics to 24/8 (for storage reasons). I'd obviously prefer not to have to export to PS if possible. Thanks.

I don't know the technical trade-offs of _how_ the reduction in bit depth is done, but there must be a simple, probably automate-able and even batch-able way to effect the conversion.  As an example, you could set Aperture "External Editor File Format" to "TIFF (8-bit)" and simply run "Edit with {external editor}", save the file in the external editor, and then back in Aperture delete your 16-bit originals.
The point -- which you've already understood -- is that you are creating new, different files and adding them to the list of files already listed in your Aperture Library.  For your workflow, this makes sense and seems a good use of Aperture.  You may find that the cost savings represented by the reduction in storage space achieved by lowering the bit-depth is not worth the administrative cost of creating these replacement files and deleting the others.

  • Photoshop changing bit depth?

If I click on Open image on a 16 bit image in Raw Photoshop opens as 16 bit. But if I open it from within photoshop or from Bridge, it opens as 8 bit (when it was a 16 bit TIFF image)

When encountering an issue with Raw 16 bit images in Bridge opening in Photoshop CS4 as 8 bit images, check the following:
    Go to:
    Adobe Bridge>Edit>Camera Raw Preferences
In the Camera Raw Preferences window, ensure that the first field, "Save image settings in:", is set to: "Camera Raw database".
Please note that selecting "Sidecar ".xmp" files" can result in 16 bit images selected in Bridge opening in Adobe Photoshop CS4 as an 8 bit image.

  • Glyph palette in Photoshop CS4

Is there any way to get Glyph palette in Photoshop, the same way as it is in Illustrator?
Maybe in a CS5 or just an update to CS4?
    Best regards, Branislav

You have to remember Photoshop is primarily an image editor and the text tool necessarily has limited capabilities.
If you want to do serious typesetting use InDesign (or Illustrator).
Why add it in later versions? Photoshop is already bloated enough. Use the right tool for the job!

  • Change Locale / UI Text Options of Photoshop CS4

Sorry to bug you all but I've searched the answer to this for two days and can't find anything.
I recently installed CS4 Design Premium on a PC running Windows 7. When I resize an image (Image>Image Size), the dialog window always displays the Document Size in centimeters. Unfortunately I'm in the U.S. and haven't yet converted to the metric system and it's a royal pain to change the drop-down to inches each time.
In my "Locales" folder the only subdirectory that exists is, "en_GB". In Edit>Preferences>Interface:UI Text Options:UI Language there is only one option available which is "English: UK". I'm pretty sure that during the initial install of the suite I selected "United States" as my Locale. And is there any reason to have a drop-down with only one choice and no means of adding others (no need to answer this one, I'm just thinking out loud)?
Is there any way to add the United States as a Locale without having to re-install the Suite?
    Many Thanks

Is there any way to add the United States as a Locale without having to re-install the Suite?
The locale for the main program is defined by the serial, not necessarily by your language selection. Shared components derive their locale from this as well and/or in part from the system setting. That issue with installs wrongly using en_GB is quite common, though. It usually occurs when other Adobe software with shared components already was on the system and coerced the installer into using the wrong language. However, short of reinstalling everything Adobe after having sweeped clean with uninstalls and the CS4 Clean Script, there is no way to resolve this.

  • Make 32 bit Photoshop CS4 the default instead of 64 bit?

It was a bit of a surprise to find that none of my 32-bit plugins would work with Photoshop CS4 x64. Most seem to work fine in the 32-bit version of PS though. Is there a way to make the 32-bit version launch by default from Bridge or when opening a PSD file instead of the 64-bit version?

I encountered this issue today as well when I installed Photoshop CS5, and discovered that my usual plugins do not work properly.
They did work properly while running in 32 bit mode.
Windows 7's extension definition sucks, that's why I rather work with the registry.
So after a bit tweaking, I think I finally cracked it.
The "Final Product" (if you will ) is two reg files for toggling 32 and 64 bit modes.
A word of caution: This is what worked on MY machine (Windows 7 64 Bit) and I cannot gurrantee it would work on other computers, nor do I take responsibility for any damage that my occur. We are playing with the Registry here, so BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL.
These codes assume Photoshop is installed in the default location. If you've altered it, make sure to modify the files accordingly first.
Before attempting to use I recommend to create a restore point, just in case something may go wrong.
    Here we go:
To switch to 32 bit mode, open a blank notepad page, paste the below code and save it as "fix.reg" (NOT TXT). After saving, activate it and you're good to go.
    32 Bit Mode
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe]
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell]

  • PHOTOSHOP CS4 bit mode compatibility

I have files in RGB and their bit modes are deactivated so I can't add another RGB photo (in 8-bit mode) into that file nor can I deactivate the bit mode in the photo to match the main files. How to I make these two images compatible??? Please help!

Are you sure you are not in "Multichannel" mode?
That's the only way I can think of of not having the option to change bit depth.
Could you post a similar screen shot?
Even better, can you post a link to one of your affected files?

  • Photoshop CS4 Save as Jpeg optinon Gone

    Hi,
My photoshop Save as, option for Jpeg has disappeared.. Any info would be great!

I believe the question has been answered above, except that I think there may be some remaining misconceptions out there.
Really, the ONLY thing you have to do, with CS4 and earlier, in anticipation of saving a JPEG is change to 8 bits per color.
Through Photoshop CS4, if you Save-As JPEG with layers or channels or other features JPEG can't support, the Save as Copy feature is automatically invoked to save a flattened version of your file without the extra stuff.
This allows you to save your file as a JPEG as long as the image is in 8 bits before you hit the File menu.  The one thing Save as Copy did not handle was a bit depth conversion.
I normally work with 16 bit per color files.  I often would want to save an intermediate JPEG from the file I'm working on, then continue editing, finally later saving a .PSD at full bit depth.  Unfortunately, because of the above issue I'd sometimes find I'd forgotten to go back in the History so as to continue editing in 16 bit per channel mode!  This is a nasty gotcha!
The really COOL thing is that the Save-As-Copy feature of Photoshop CS5 has now been extended to do an automatic downconversion from higher bit depths to 8 bits.  Thus with CS5 you no longer have to worry about changing the bit depth or anything else in anticipation of Save As JPEG.  It just works!
I have been submitting wishlist requests to Adobe for this feature since about Photoshop CS I think.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Adobe for finally implementing it!

  • Complaint: Animated GIF, Photoshop CS4

I am a freelance print designer. Needless to say that I have upgraded to the Design Standard Edition of the Creative Suite 4. Still, some customers ask me to do their web banners, too.
    Fact 1:
There is an animation palette in Photoshop CS4 Standard.
    Fact 2:
You can create animations with that palette.
    Fact 3:
You can save the animation as an animated GIF.
    Fact 4:
Opening the animated GIF, you only get the first frame, so you cannot edit the animation or content inside the GIF.
    Fact 5:
I need to alter a few animated GIFs which I created several years ago using Photoshop CS2. Due to a harddrive crash, I don't have access to the original layered PSD files any more.
    Fact 5:
Photoshop CS4, the most advanced image editing tool on the face of the earth, is absolutely useless at this point, and I have to find freeware or shareware to do the job. Finding and purchasing this sort of software is MY time, and that is MY money.
Whatever drove Adobe to cripple Photoshop CS4 Standard, whatever drove them to expel the simple "Open Animated GIF" feature from Photoshop CS4, it was the wrong decision.
This, Adobe, is a customer complaint. Take it serious. There is competition, and I hear a lot about GIMP these days.
    Frustrated,
    Gero

I know this thread is getting on a bit now, but I do have the answers.
Quite simply, as far as I can tell, this cannot be done without Quicktime installed.
To open an animated gif in CS4 on a PC:
    1. Go to File->Import->Video Frames to Layers
    2. In the File Name box type “*” ( or you can type the name manually) The window will now show every type of file
    3. Select your gif and you are done
To open animated gif in CS4 on a MAC:
    1.  Go to open, select your GIF, then in the bottom left corner of the open file dialogue box select Quicktime Movie as the format, then open your GIF.
    2.  You’ll need to open your animations window by going to window -> animation. This will bring up the time line.
    3.  If you want to have all of the frames broken up into layers, click the options in the animation window, and select “Flatten Frames into Layers”.
This will give you access to all the frames as layers and you can now edit the GIF as though it was a movie.
I hope this helps to ease somebody's frustration.

  • I am attempting to install Adobe Photoshop CS4 on Windows 7?

I have a laptop that is running on Windows 7 and I am attempting to install Adobe Photoshop CS4. It downloads the program file alright but when I click on the Set Up button it says "Cannot install Please click quit below" and then below it there are two bullet points that say:
-Adobe Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 - Adobe Photoshop CS4 not installed
    -Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit) 11.0.1 - Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit) not installed
What exactly is going on? I tried running the set up in a different compatibility mode (e.g. Windows XP and Windows Vista) but no luck.
Am I even clicking the correct file in the folder? Or is my computer just not going to work with Adobe Photoshop CS4?

These are merely the updates. You need to instasll the base program first.

  • Installation Hassle For Photoshop CS4

I bought a Bamboo Fun Wacom Tablet that came with Photoshop Elements 6.0. Under Wacom's Privilege Program, I bought Adobe Photoshop CS4 for $299. http://www.wacom.com/privileges/privileges.cfm?id=55&tablet=BambooFun
    https://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/index.cfm?store=OLS-US&view=ols_prod&category=/Spec ialPages/Photoshop&affiliateID=70281#loc=en_us&store=OLS-US&category=/SpecialPages/Photosh op&view=ols_prod
After recieving Photoshop Elements, I installed and registered the product to my Windows Vista 64-bit PC.  After recieving Photoshop CS4, I installed the product on the same computer.  The installation went fine, but when I start it up, it starts up as Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended. I entered in the serial number (name on sticker is Photoshop UPSL) from the back of my CD case without problems.  It brings me to the screen to enter Photoshop Elements' serial number. I select the 6.0 version and enter the serial number correctly, but I recieve the message "Serial number does not match the product you selected."
I do not understand why my Photoshop Elements serial number is not activating the program, nor do I understand why I have recieved a Photoshop CS4 Extended Trial Version from a CD case and installation box the has Photoshop CS4 written all over it..  If buying Photoshop like this has become this much as a hassle, they should do away with upgrade products and give away true full versions of Photoshop CS4 for 50% off.

The serial number on the back of my Photoshop CS4 DVD case is the one I used. It is the only 24-digit number that came with the CS4 package.  The next screen prompted me to enter Photoshop Elements' serial number, mentioning the serial number I entered is for an upgrade version of Photoshop CS4 Extended.  This does not sound correct because I did not buy a CS4 Extended software, yet it loads up as such.
Photoshop Elements is also a 24-digit serial number. The sticker on the back of Bamboo Fun's Software Bundle CD case that installs Photoshop Elements says it is version 6.0, which the software itself says in the Help > About Photoshop Elements Menu.  But when I enter the serial number with Photoshop Elements 6.0 selected, I get the message, "The serial number does not match the product you selected."
During installation, it never prompted me if I wanted to try a trial version of Photoshop CS4 Extended, only Photoshop-related options were Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 (64-bit).

  • Photoshop CS4 - Converting bit depth on import

Photoshop seems to be converting pictures that I open to 8-bit from 24-bit: before the problem I think it was converting to 16-bit because Photoshop doesnt seem to support 24-bit but I cant remember.
I've been using Photoshop CS4 for about 4-5 weeks now without any problems and this just seems to have come out nowhere. The problem doesn't seem to be related to Camera Raw at all because I don't use it to import my pictures, so the "Workflow Options" don't seem to have any effect on the converting. I've also tried to delete the preferences file and that doesn't help either.
    Any ideas?

Photoshop doesn't convert bit depths or color modes when opening documents, unless there is an unsupported bit depth (like 12 bits/channel) in which case we convert upward (to 16 bits/channel).
It would help if you told us what file format you were talking about, and what you mean by "24 bit".

  • Photoshop CS4 64 bit  - Clone Tool does not work (and other tools)

    Hello.
I have been using Photoshop for many years going back to v5.  I had used Design Prem Suite CS4 for the past year on an XP machine.  All worked fine.  I recently moved to WIndows 7 (64 bit) to get the add memory usage.  CS4 installs both 64 and 32 bit versions on Windows 7 64 bit.  So far all good.   Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.  I am at a dead end and really have no confidence in getting Adobe's help.
My tools are working erratically, especially the cloning and healing tools.  I can't even use Photoshop in its current state and this has been going on now for weeks, no help from Adobe on my lates support ticket post.
I canonly say that the clong tools is all over the place including but not limited to:
    * When I sample and then click to stamp, lines shoot across across the image as it I clone a line not a single sample area. These stamps can be the length of the enite image.
    * when I sample, then click to stamp, some the stamps occurs on some other part of the image.
    * when I sample and the click to stamp, nothing happens. I have to click several times.
    * when I sample and then click to stampl, the prior location I stamped has the clone applied
There are more, but this is to just give an example.
    Notes:
    * I have trashed preferences at least 20 times and the problem immediately reappears
    * The problem happens in both the 32 bit and 64 bit version of PS running in Windows 7 65 bit
    * The problem occurs with OpenGL tuned on and off
    *  I have installed the latest PC patch 11.0.1
    * I have updated my latest NVidia drives. They are current.
    * I uninstalled Photoshop (kept the rest of Suite) and that did not work, and the same problem reappeared.  I am not uninstalling the complete suite but the reinstall has error (that is a separate issue)
    * I have triple monitors running off 2 GeForce 9800 GT cards.  These worked flawlessly before upgrading to the Windows 7 64 bit configuration.  When I upgrades, I replaced the processor, motherbaord and moved to 12 GB ram. The graphic cards are the same.
    Other tool issues:
    * I have similar problems with the healing brush
    * sometomes the text tool acts strange. I will click to enter text and a large area opens to enter text instead of just the cursor positioned ready for text.  Then other times it works normally.
    * the move tools sometimesacts strange. For example, if I try to move some test, the text jumps and moves of the image and I have to find it to drag it back on the image.
    Thanks in advance

All I can say is...  Boy am I glad I have an ATI card that just works (and that's including Photoshop CS4/CS5 32/64 bit)!
One thing I'm not sure was mentioned above...  Try changing your Advanced OpenGL preferences to "Basic" or even turning off OpenGL to see if it affects the issue.  Also try disabling the Show Overlay function in the CLONE SOURCE palette.
Best of luck getting to the bottom of these problems, guys.  If they run on too long, consider switching brands.

  • Photoshop CS4 randomly changing font...

I'm baffled by this one. I created a new text layer and chose MT Resolution Classic Tight as the font. I entered one word, entered a space and the continued typing. However, everything after that space was in Minion Pro. I had to select all of the text and change it back to MT Resolution. This is happening no matter what font I choose. I could start with something like Arial, enter a space after the first word I type, and then the rest of the entered text is in some other random font. There seems to be no logic to it. I've been using PS for years, and CS4 for at least a year, and this problem has never come up before.
I can't even begin to imagine what is going wrong. Help?
    (Photoshop CS4 Extended 11.0.1 32-bit, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit)

How many fonts do you have installed?
Do a search for and delete all instances of adobefnt*.lst (that extension is .LST).
And if a broken or corrupted font is causing problems there is no alternative in the long run to tracking it down and deleting it.

  • Photoshop CS4 - How to install both   64 and 32 bit versions on XP 64

    Hello-
When I installed Photoshop CS4 along with the other apps on CS4 Web Premium I thought that both versions of PShop would be installed by default, but that was not the case with my installation; only the 64 bit version was installed.
Now I would like to install the 32 bit version but when I try to do it through setup I am unable to check the box. There is a list of "Installed Products" and then "Available Products"; the only thing under "Available Products" is Photoshop CS4, but I am unable to check the box.
Any ideas on how I can install the 32-bit version? I want it for the GPU acceleration and to use certain plugins.
    Thanks,
    Paul

a)re: built for XP64 - note that I said "gave the [erroneous] impression," meaning that someone could plausibly infer that PSCS4 64 will not run reliably on XP 64, which is categorically untrue. I am NOT saying that there are not people who have had problems and will continue having problems with PS CS4 on XP 64.* However, I am personally attesting - having worked with PS CS on my XP 64 system a lot since buying it this week, including continuously since I reinstalled last night ( I tend to work at night) - that PS CS4 runs gloriously on XP 64, INCLUDING the OpenGL stuff once you patch the reg via the link I posted (which, by the way, would have been a valid answer to my question).
On that note, telling me stuff that I already know is NOT a valid answer. Further, as we have seen, my running this on XP 64, as opposed to Vista, was irrelevant, if only (but not really only) because that is not the system to which my question referred. How did telling me about Vista help? If you don't know what to do with XP 64, then you don't know....I didn't know either, at least when I posed my question. Your reference to Vista was POINTLESS.
    b) re: installing to non-default directory. I have been doing this for so long that I can't remember not doing it, and I have never, ever had a problem like this, and I do have other dual-bit depth apps. This should be a non-issue. If I thought it was relevant I would have mentioned it, but in light of what I just said, it did not seem to be a factor. Crikey- CS3 is in that same directory! Why would Adobe's installer get confused? They are the same structures, i.e. %disk%:\Program Files, %disk%:\Program Files (x86). If you knew things that might cause my problem - you didn't-you might have asked about my install.... Instead, you told me what anyone who had read my question would already know that I knew, namely that there would be two different locations for the two different versions. Incidentally, and here's good intel here, when you do get them both installed, you get BOTH versions listed in your Adobe CS4 whatever edition programs folder. Right there! So, if you had known what you were on about, you would have realized that there was NO WAY that PS 32 was mysteriously hiding somewhere. This is another clue that you knew nothing about the subject you were purportedly answering!
So why, why, why am I picking on you? Because there was a time when you could post a simple question on the internets and some helpful soul would take the time to actually read and consider the question before giving an answer that, even if not ultimately fruitful, was at least in the freaking ballpark. But those days are gone** and even though I know that and I expect nothing, I posted anyway, and along came you, with two heaping helpings of SQUAT in terms of useful advice. What the hey? Are you that bored that you just dole out crappy advice? Watch more TV or something!
    Jeez!
    Thanks,
    Paul
*My relevant system specs are as follows, for those who may want to give XP 64 a shot: and/or are having problems:
XP 64 SP2 ( there is no SP3 for 64 and parenthetically I will note that CS4 on XP 32 SP2 runs fine even though you get a warning on install that it is supposed to have SP3 installed)
    8 GB RAM
AMD 64X2 5600 on AMD/ATI 780G Chipset with dual integrated ATI 3200 Graphic plus an extra ATI 3400 card running three different monitors (2 on the 3200 and one on the 3400). On my setup PS likes to enable and actually work with the OpenGL stuff when I launch either/or the 64 or 32 bit version on the monitor that is attached to the 3400 card. After that I can drag the app anywhere I want and it works.
