Changing Blend mode in Layer Style

On a Mac is there a shortcut to change the blend mode of the layer inside the Layer Style dialog box?? On a pc you can click on the blend mode menu and then once it's highlighted you can cycle through with arrow keys. I know outside of the Layer Style dialog you can Shift and + or -  with the move tool, but the advantage of doing this inside of your layer style dialog is it doens't affect your history. Plus it's something I would like to be able to do with blend modes of any Layer Style effect. Thanks.

Actually no there isnt. The Option Shift Blend mode shortcuts should really work here but don't

  • Changing blend mode while PS is applying a filter makes layer "invisible".

    Came across this by chance.
I applied a D&S filter and, while PS was busy "calculating", I hit Shift-Opt-K, to set blend mode "darken".
That did set the blens mode, but also somehow made the layer have no effect. Going back in history to before the "Change blend mode" and re-doing it worked.
    Screenshots:
    Layer has no effect:
    Stepping back, still nothing:
On step further back in history; works as expected.
Apply blend mode "Darken" again. Now it works:

I was able to reproduce this in CS6 and CS5.
    Thanks for the report!

  • How to change blending mode on multiple layers at the same time

I'm using CS5. I have a document with about 70 layers. I would like to change the blending mode to "lighten" for each layer. Is there an easy way to do this?

Photoshop doesn't allow multiple layer editing. That's why the styles are grayed out. Only 1 layer at a time.
What version are you talking about?
CS5 definitely let’s one apply a Style to multiple Layers.
rfcommagere, I don’t know how to make it much clearer:
    • set the Blending Mode on one Layer
    • with that Layer selected create a Style with »Include Layer Blending Options« checked
    • select all other Layers that should have that Blending Mode
    • click the Style in the Styles Panel

  • Changing blend mode changes behavior

I'm trying to have words grow from very small to "swallow up" the screen—all while using them as stencils through which we see water. With me so far? Anyway, the motion is perfect when the blend mode is on normal, but when I simply change the blend mode to Stencil Alpha, at a certain point, it starts moving sharply to the right. All I've done is change blending modes, honest.
Who knows what the h-e-double hockey sticks this is, and, how to fix it? This is maddening.

    Heya,
This is just a guess, as I haven't seen your project, but I think the text is sliding because it is too large for your GPU, so it's getting cropped and recentered.
Why is it happening when you change the blend mode? Good question. I think it's because picking any blend mode but 'Normal' is causing a pre-comp, and since your GPU's size limit is being exceeded, it's cropping (and recentering) the result. Or maybe it's a bug.
Here's a workaround to try: nest the text in its own layer, enable Fixed Resolution for the layer (found in the Layer tab in the Inspector, when the layer is selected), and then change the blend mode of the layer to whatever you want.
Seriously, though, you really should be using (as Patrick suggested) the Image Mask tool, instead of the Stencil Alpha blend mode. Free yourself from the AE-style blend mode tyranny! Vive la image mask!
    (good luck)

  • One layer style changing all the other layer styles? Turn this off?

I'm sure there is an easy answer to this but I cannot seem to find it. When I am applying a style to one layer in CS2, and lets say I give it a drop shadow that is different (say it's at 110degrees rather than 90degrees) compared with the other drop shadows in my other layers, the curent layer style will change all the other layer styles across the board. I've looked all over for some setting to change so each individual layer keeps its own style but I can't seem to find this. I want each layer to have its own style attribute and not change the rest, how do I correct this?
    Thanks for your help!

You need to uncheck the global light option in the layer styles dialog.

  • Debug error when changing blending modes

    Hi there,
I get a Debug Error every time I use 2 Adjustment Layers one above each other, with the following effects applied:
    Adjustment Layer Above:
    - Tint, not keyframed
    - Opacity Blending Mode: Color Dodge
    Adjustment Layer Below:
    - Venetian Blinds, not keyframed
    - Offset, keyframed
    - Turbulent Displace, keyframed
    - Opacity Blending Mode: Normal
    Media layer below:
    - JPG, Canon 60D - 5184x3456 - no effects applied
The error I get (option to 'Continue', but the program doesn't respond and needs to be closed):
    Premiere Pro Debug Event
Premiere Pro has encountered an error.
    [..\..\Src\CutlistRenderer.cpp-717]
    Error in Events panel:
An input contract violation has occurred!
I first started to get this error, while working with various media files in 1440x1080/HDV 1080i mode (Sony Z7U native)/29.97fps/1.33 sequence. Trying to understand what it goes wrong, I created a new project and recreated the adjustment layers (AL) with same effects applied - the only thing changed was the JPG added as media under both ALs. Same debug errors every time the blending is changed from normal to any other blending mode. With normal blending on the AL above, everything is fine.
After further testing, it looks like even with only one AL (no effects) above the JPG, get the same debug error when blending is changed from normal to any other mode.
Important note: Same layer+effect configuration applied in 1920x1080/ARRI Cinema mode/24fps/1.0 sequence - it works with no debug error. Haven't tried any other editing modes yet.
    Layers, in order from top:
    - AL (Venetian Blinds, Tint, Offset, Turbulent Displace - Color Dodge blending)
    - AL (Venetian Blinds, Tint, Offset, Turbulent Displace - Normal blending)
    - AL (Timecode effect)
    - Title
    - media, MPEG (1440x1080, 29.97 frame rate, 1.3333 pixel aspect ratio)
    - After Effects composition (dynamic link) 1920x1080 - content: media file, MPEG (640x480, 30fps, 1.0 + various titles and effects, including color dodge blending
I googled for similar error reports, there are none related to Premiere Pro.
I don't know what else to do, rather than just avoid using this effect configuration.
Does anyone else had this issue, even in different situations?
Thank you very much for any feedback.

  • Can't change blending mode...

I imported a scanned image into photoshop, fiddled with the levels, and then imported it into Illustrator to Live Trace it, Live Paint it, and generaly flat in the colors for my comic.  All was going well until I turned on visibility on the backgrounds and realized somewhere along the line (probably in PS) the imported image had been set to Multiply.  I figure, no problem, I'll just change it.
Turns out it's on Normal, and I've selected every object, line, group, etc on that layer and all are set to normal (might have missed one, idunno).  Is there any way to rectify this without going back and starting from scratch?

    Wade,
Not sure how you are arriving at that photoshop  blending modes are read by Illustrator.  I tested this in CS5 original release, but have not since, and only tested .psd format. Have they finally fixed this one of few things that Corel Draw can do, but Illustrator cannot?
    From Photoshop:
See No Multiply in Illustrator. And anyhow what if a multilayered document with various blending modes, are you saying that Illustrator will honor all of them? Not sure why you are showing the transparency panel, did you possibly change the blending mode to multiply yourself, or do you have a method for getting this to work?

  • Change default settings in Layer Style dialogue

    Hi there,
I often use outer glow set to black and with multiply, as opposed to yellow and screen which is the default. Is there any way to change this permanently?
    Thanks!
    felix

It's not really worth using layer styles for two settings. On the other hand, if all you need to set are those two settings and you plan on using that one type of Outer Glow a lot then you could save a style that contains only those settings but that still doesn't change the defaults so you'll have to modify your workflow. If you plan on doing that then make sure that you have the Styles panel close by because if you Shift+click on one of the styles in the Styles panel then it adds those styles to the current ones instead of replacing them and no, this doesn't work if you select the Styles tab from the big Layer Styles dialog box

  • How do I copy a layer but have the blending mode reset to normal?

I'm going to try and word this as best as I possibly can lol. I edited a layer with a blending mode and want to copy the layer but have the layer's blending mode go back to normal so that I can edit it again with a different blending mode.
Does anyone know how I could achieve this? Any help would be much appreciated!

Here's the best way: make an action!: Open up your actions panel and create a new action- assign it to a key (f2)>> Make sure your layer is on any blending mode.>>Create a copy of the layer>> change blending mode to normal>> hit stop on action.
Now you have your own action that will always copy whatever layer is selected and change the blending mode to normal!

  • Change layer name within Layer Styles dialog

Okay, so I'm lame - or maybe it's a fiddly operation to begin with - but half the time I double click a layer name to rename it I get the Layer Styles dialog instead. If the name field can't be made larger and easier to activate, it would be great if I could at least make the name change from within the Layer Styles dialog once I'm in it.
Other means to make layer renaming simpler would also be apprecated.

Thanks Michael. Not sure if any of those really simplifies the process though.
Maybe instead of making a double click to the vast majority of the layer area open the Layer Style they could devote an equal amout of space to the name. Anything in the vacinity of the name (especially immediately above or below it) would activate the name for renamng, and anything reasonably to the left or right of it for Layer Styles. That seems somewhat fair and simpified to me.

  • Layers & blending modes

Please can anyone offer advice on how to change the blending modes on multiple layers at once. I'm investigating star trails and would like to change a hundred or so layers to lighten all at once. Many thanks.

If the layers in question are star trails on transparency, try this:
Turn off visiblity on all layers EXCEPT the star trail layers.
Target the top-most star trail layer in the stack.
Shift-Option-Command-E to stamp all of those layers to a single new layer.
Turn off visibility on all the individual start trail layers.
Change blending mode of the single new layer.

  • Merging Layers while keeping blend mode

I was informed if I have a layer that has a blend mode and I want to keep the blend mode in tact I should place a empty layer beneath then merge down.  The results are not equal to before merging down.
    Layer with Divide blend mode.
Layer above merged down to an empty layer
Not identical on a background ?

Once the blending mode is baked into the flattened image, it will change some. I don't usually see anything quite that noticeable except with my startrail stacks, though. If you are concerned that something when haywire within Photoshop, you could try a preference reset. Also be sure your graphics card's drivers are up to date.

  • Scroll Blending Modes?

Is there any way to quickly change blending modes in CS3 without using the mouse? I'm envisioning a single click in the blending mode drop-down menu and then using the up and arrow keys to scroll through the list.
It's the kind of interface feature I've come to take for granted. Makes for much better speed and ergonomics than all that mousing and clicking, no?

In the Keyboard Shortcut section you can assign single key shortcuts to the Next and Previous Blending mode command.

  • Layer style screen pops up for each photo in Automate Batch processing

Please HELP! I managed to re-record an existing Action without problem. I double click on <Set Layer style on current layer> and change to a new Layer Style for my Watermark Text. The <Contour> is Linear. The Actions panel turns red during editing.
But when I run > Automate > Batch and select that edited Action, the <Layer Style> screen pops-up for each photo and the only way to finish the batch of photos is to click <OK> for each photo. I’m using Photoshop CS5. I have refresh Photoshop, restart my laptop but the problem remains.
I did another copy of the original Action and just changed the
value in <Text Layer> and it works in the Batch processing. This problem only happens when I changed the value in the <Layer Style>.
I have been looking into many forums and still could not find the solution. I appreciate some advice as soon as possible as this problem has dragged on for two weeks now.
    Thank you in advance.

As silly as it sounds to be, I found a way out!
I decided to change the value again in the <Layer Style> on the same Action (ie Main WM Name 70 copy), and RUN <Automate> and on second RUN the <Layer Style> screen doesn't pop-up!
I just couldn't believe my eyes and did some rounds of testing! And it works:
a)Firstly, I will change the <Layer Style> to any value and saved it
(Just to test it, I Run <Automate> and the <Layer Style> screen pops-up at each photo)
b)Then I change again the <Layer Style> to the actual value I want
    c)Run <Automate> without the <Layer Style> screen pops-up
To test further, oddly enough, if I change the <Layer Style> value the 3rd time, the pops-up screen appear again! And to overcome the same problem, I have to change the value 4th time, and the problem disappears.
So simple solution (at least for me) and yet I cracked my head for two weeks to overcome it!
    Thanks for your time, c.pfaffenbichier.

  • How to cycle thru blend modes within the Layer Style dialog??

Hopefully, we all know you can use the Shift key and + or - to cycle through blend modes in the layers panel, as well as in various tools (like the Gradient tool or the Brush tool). A great way to quickly preview your blending options.
But what about within the Layer Style dialog? This seems to the only situation where this shortcut does not work. Is there another shortcut or workaround that can be used here?
    I'm using Photoshop CS2 (on a Mac).
    Thanks,
    Doug D.

    That's a good point.
I guess that Multiply (for Shadow) and Screen (for Glow) are really the "go to" blends for these effects, and including any other options beyond those is all just gravy.
I'm just so addicted to using the Shift +/- shortcut and really like previewing blending changes that way... (But it would create a conflict within Bevel and Emboss, as you suggest.)
