Changing clip speed?

I have a multitrack project that was sent from FCP. Since the speed changes I made to clips in FCP don't carry over to STP, I can't master my audio the same way it came out in FCP without speeding up this clip!
So, it's a single clip in a multitrack project. I've tried going to Clip > Speed, but all of the options are greyed out. I've tried changing the playback speed for the clip in the "Details" tab, and I've even tried creating this clip's own STAP project, and changing the speed there, but no dice.
There doesn't seem to be anything in the manual that talks about this process... What am I missing? How do you change the speed of a clip!?

Hi, T-Bob.
I was researching the same problem where I need to speed up an audio recording, but ALSO modify the pitch proportionally.
The solution I came up with is two part:
1. Use *Time Stretch* to change the duration of clip to what the new duration should be. i.e. If you double the speed, then Time Stretch to 50% of the sample value.
2. Use *Pitch Shift II* to raise the pitch of the clip. i.e. In this case, raise the pitch one octave.
For other values (i.e. 40% change in speed), you can use the link below to download a doc detailing converting from semitone-cents to percentages.

  • Problem Changing Clip Speed

    Hello,
When working with FCP I have continuously had problems with changing clip speeds. I import my .dv files, open them in the viewer window, select my desired in and out points and drag and drop the selection in the timeline. Once it's here and I attempt to change it's speed, I get this message:
"UNABLE TO COMPLETE COMMAND. A CONFLICT OCCURRED DURING A TRIM OPERATION"
As many of you know it's impossible to achieve your desired outcome without the ability to edit a clips speed. I would really appreciate help and I thank anyone in advance for their time.
    -David

    Welcome to the forum!
Usually you'll get that message if there are clips further down the Timeline (to the right) from the clip your working with. This helps keep the other clips where you wanted them instead of getting pushed down by a slo-mo clip.
One work-around is to open a new Sequence with the same settings, then copy the clip to the new Sequence. When you've made the adjustment you wanted, copy and paste the lip back into the original Sequence.
As many of you know it's impossible to achieve your desired outcome without the ability to edit a clips speed
I'd have to disagree with your assumption ... the need for speed changes isn't universal. I seldom (if ever) need to adjust speed for news clips, press conferences, corporate promos, etc.

ps: just curious as to why you're using .dv files in FCP? Was this footage captured in iMovie?

  • Changing clip speed causes Premiere to crash?

Hi, I'm making a video series and I have a problem. Everytime I change the speed of at least two clips in my timeline, sooner or later a message will come up saying "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Elements to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project."
I have looked up the problem online and found another person who had my problem (He was on Premiere CS3). He says he was absolutely sure that the problem was caused by changing the clip speed.
Can anyone help me with this?

I suspect the issue is due to your video format... what format are your videos? Your problem will be solved by converting them to DV-AVI. See this FAQ on conversion:

  • How to change clip speed w/o moving all the other clips in a sequence?

when I have many clips in a sequence and try to change the speed of a clip (which changes the length) FCE automatically shifts all the following clips. is there a way to turn this feature off?

Not in FCE. FCP 7 has that feature.
Think about it; when you speed up a clip, the duration is shorter, therefore the clip is shorter. When you slow down a clip, the duration lengthens, therefore the clip is longer. How would FCE know that you don't want the clip to remain the same duration?
You'll need to trim the clip accordingly based on the amount of speed adjustment you want.

  • Help: Clips rendered in AE turn blue when changing clip speed and exporting in Premiere Pro

    Hi
I've been having this problem in Premiere Pro CS5 (I'm just not sure with CS4 & ealier versions).. ok the problem is that in Premiere Pro CS5 when I change the speed of a clip that is rendered in After Effects and export it either in AVI or in MOV, it produces some blue flicker on that clip or sometimes the entire clip turns blue..This only happens when I am using Quicktime Animation codec in AE..I can't find any forum that discusses this problem..And I don't know if others are also experiencing this (except for my friend who is also experiencing this in MacOSX)..by the way my version of Premiere Pro is 5.0.3 and my After Effects is 10.0.2.4 (Windows 7 x64)..I don't know know if this is a bug in PrPro or AE, or if Adobe is aware of this problem..
Here's a video of what I am consulting to you guys for you to better understand what I'm saying.. (sorry, no audio)
P.S.   CS5.5 users please tell me if you also experience this..
    Thanks in advance!

This only happens when I am using Quicktime Animation codec in AE
So don't do that.  It's probably not the best choice for video, anyway.  I mean it says right in the name - "animation".  There's a reason for that.
On a Windows machine, Lagarith and UT are two free lossless codecs that play well within the Adobe suite.  Give them a try.
Or better yet, don't render out of AE at all.  Use Dynamic Linking instead.

  • Problems changing clip speed

Either I am being really ignorant, or this is another quirk to FCE.  Why, when I change the speed of a clip using Modify/Speed, does FCE shift all the clips on track 1 when the clip I am adjusting is on track 3 and selected.  Is there a way to prevent this very annoying behaviour.  I have even tried locking track one and it still shifts all the clips on that track after the clip I am editing, even though that clip is on a different track.  In fact, when track is "locked" and I change the speed of the clip on track 3, FCE shifts the video on track one negatively 17 frames and the audio for track one positively 17 frames.  Completely stumped.
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Thanks Russ,
But the correct answer is "I am ignorant".  Your response made me look at how i had the whole sequence set up and I realized that the audio track for the whole thing was on a3 and of course it wasn't shifting clips after all but changing the whole audio track.
    Thanks again,
    Ron

  • I cannot change clip speed

I am trying to change the speed on clips in a project where the same operation just the other day was possible. Now, even after restarting the computer, and final cut express several times, I keep getting a message where:
"A conflict occured during a trim operation"
and the speed of the clips, no matter when i imported them, cannot be changed due to this error. Can anyone explain to me how this can be fixed and what it exactly means? Im working on an important project and need to figure this out soon before its too late
    Thank you!

    Hi(Bonjour)
It seems that you want to change the speed of a clip surounded by other clips.
Try to put your clip at the end of your sequence, change the speed and put it back (with required trimming as you changed the duration...) at his place in the sequence.

  • How do I change clip speed?

I am putting together some clips in iMovie and would like change the speed of some of the clips.
When I select a clip in the timeline, the Speed Control button is not highlighted so I cannot alter clip speed.
How can I get the speed control to work?

The speed control only works if you have not selected wrapped timeline.  Select View and uncheck "Wrappong Timeline".  I have requested Apple document this in the help files.

  • Sequence moves when changing clip speed

Whenever I edit an individual clip's speed, the sequence in front of it gets moved backwards or forwards. It even moves the sequence markers! How do I get rid of this, so only the clip grows and shrinks, without affecting the space around it?
    Thanks.

    Michael Patten1 wrote:
this is a mediocre work around. I have cross dissolves and and filters attached to my clips. Either method, I have to do band-aid work to keep my sequence unaffected.
You have been provided, promptly and free of charge, the only viable solution by a patient and knowledgable Final Cut user. I believe the proper English expression would be "Thanks, but..."
Curiously, this change in FCP's speed adjustment—known as rippling—was changed sometime between FCP2 and FCP5, can't recall when exactly. It was apparently made at the behest of Those Who Decide Such Things. People like me howled in protest. IN FCP7, you have a choice in the speed dialog to ripple or not.

  • Problem Adjysting Clip Speed - Please Help

I have recently purchased this new Macbook and am finding it difficult to get my head around some of the features of iMovie. I am familiar with older versions. My problem is as follows:-
I am editing a video using clips taken with the video setting of a regular camera, not camcorder. The clip are in MPEG-4 formats. I can import and split the clips with out a problem.
However when it comes to adjusting the speed whenever I drag my cursor over the clips the play head follows. When I double click the clip as mentioned in the online tutorials instead of receiving a pop up window my play head begins to play the clip.
Can any iMovie guru please help me with my problem. It would be much appreciated.
Oh and if you are explaining please make your response as user friendly as possible. Still only getting to grips with this version.
    Thanks for your help!!!

You should run software update and get version 7.1.4 and the newer versions of QuickTIme.
However, changing clip speed is not a feature of iMovie 08. You need iMovie 09 for that.

  • How do I change the speed of a video clip after making it a Smart Object?

In order to apply the same Camera Raw filter to every segment of a clip I was going to split multiple times, I converted the whole clip to a Smart Object, applied my Camera Raw filter settings, and then split the clip and deleted some portions.  Now I want to make certain portions of those clips slow-motion, but even if I right-click on the right side of the layer and select "Clear Smart Filters", all I see when I right-click on the clip in the timeline are the motion options; I can no longer change the speed or the audio.  Is there a way to do this without having to make all the cuts in the beginning, changing the speed and the audio, and then having to go back and convert each individual segment into a smart object and then apply the same ACR filter to each one?

    Brett,
Thanks for addressing this question.  I tried it and see that the embedded file is the entire clip that I started with, not the trimmed version that I turned into a SO, but at least I could go back and make a change that way in a pinch.
If you wouldn't mind looking at this video between :50 and 1:40, and tell me if you think that AE or PP would give me significantly better results in the jumping segments where I slowed it down to 25%:  2014-06-26 And the last thing I expected to see jump out of the box was Albert Einstein! on Vimeo.  I am trying to keep my expenses down by only using PS CC for video editing, and love the Camera Raw filter capabilities.  By using PS CC it also lets me lay down my audio and edit to the audio w/o, as Mylenium suggested, outputting my file from PS CC into either AE or PP to do the slow-mo part.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • How do you change the speed of a detached audio clip?

I have a piece of detached audio.  Video Frame rate is 23.98.  The piece of Video above it is Video Frame Rate 24.
How do I change the speed of this detached audio clip?

Nope, the Automatic Speed did not work.  I exported the XML, and then ran it through X2Pro to try and get my AAF, and it still spits out conform warnings/errors on those same spots.  Automatic Speed apparently did nothing helpful to my situation.  (Can Anyone explain Automatic Speed?)
Will have to try going through Cinema Tools per the similar issues noted in this conversation: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/344/28007
Curious to see what FCPX would do with this media, importing the 24p file to a 25 Project cause a noticeable shift in both time and pitch.
I imported the time coded audio separately, and played it against the obviously speed and pitched changed video with embedded audio. The files did not sync.
The audio remained in time and pitch, while the video didn't. So the audio tc doesn't seem to effect playback in FCPX, but video definitely does, and it seems rather buggy.
So, if your video is 24.0 and your audio is 23.98 and you are in a 23.98 timeline, FCPX might be changing the speed of the video without really reporting it. Resetting speed doesn't do anything, hitting "automatic speed" screws it up a bit more (it goes the wrong way). Changing the speed to something like 96% (FCPX reports 96% but I know it's really ((24000/1001)/25) which is just short of 96%. Turning off the "preserve pitch" checkbox actually pitched the audio back to normal.
I didn't create the 24.0 vs 23.9 media that you have, but perhaps you are having similar issues, or a different combination/permutation therein.
But to answer your question, the time coded audio was not changed, only embedded audio.
    and
But here some notes which makes things hopefully clearer.
Resampling and changing playback speed are two totally different things.
Samplerate for audio is the same as fps for video (not dpi for video) so let's call it sps.
You can record audio at any sampling rate. But let's take 48 kHz and 32 kHz here.
Record 60 seconds. Once recorded both files as stand alone files will play 60 seconds.
But forced to play back in a NLE timeline with a fixed sps of 48 the first file will playback correctly. The second one will play at 2/3 of the time (32/48). The other way round the 48 sps file will play longer in a 32 sps timeline.
Now for those poor guys who have to work with NTSC:
A real world second is not a second in NTSC video world. Its 1001/1000 seconds.
So selecting a 48k sps audio preset in a timeline preset means that a real world audio of 60 seconds is only 1000/1001x60. That means that those 60 seconds are only 59.94 seconds long. Its too short.
One way - if you stay strictly in NTSC - is to record audio with 48048 Hz. This way a real world 1 second audio will match a 1 second NTSC video.
Next option with BWAVE files is to change the playback settings in the BEXT header of the file. This won't resample the file!!!
Now about the TC. BWAVE doesn't have a TC in a way you're used when handling video. It has a timestamp in the header. This timestamp contains the Samples after Midnight. Based on that the NLE will convert this to TC which can be displayed. So in NTSC world this might give a wrong interpretation.
For example if you have a "Start TC" of 00:10:00:00 (thats what you see on your audio recorder) it means that using 48kHz the timestamp is at 600x48,000 = 28,800,000 samples. Since the real sampling rate in the timeline though is 48048 Hz you have to divide the source stamp by this number. This results in 9.99000999000999 minutes. So for a 23.976 fps project this is a TC of 00:09:59:10.
So setting the Bext header and/or iXML chunk to the correct playback speed will keep everything intact. Again this is without resampling!
Using an AIFF there aren't these options.
So you can edit all the stuff without resampling when using BWAVE. But resampling will happen when you export a final movie.

  • How can I change the speed of a video clip?

hi, I'm a new user of iMovie 08.
I fail to find the function button that can make a video clip slow down or faster, such as change the speed to 60% of the normal speed, etc.
    I know iMovie 06 has this function,it's in video FX,duration,speed...but I can't find the menu in iMovie08.
Is there anyone knows where it is?
    many thanks!

    Upgrade to iMovie 06.
Slow / Fast Motion is easy with iMovie 06.
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

If you right click on your clip, does it offer to Optimize Video? If so, after you optimize you can change the speed.

I set keyframes from 100 to 0 %. It only works with my ProRes HQ Files in normal speed.
Does anybody know this bug or have an idea???

It actually works fine here, even without nesting, using both Speed/Duration and Time Remapping.
Though I can't test with ProRes.
