Changing Clock Speeds!

Well, i installed a handy little tool called CoreDuo Temp
http://macbricol.free.fr/coreduotemp/
Its a handy tool which tells me the temp of the CPU and also the amount of CPU being used. It also tells me my clock speed.
When I start up my MacBook the little tool loads up, now what i've noticed is that the clock speed changes! Using a statistics tool i managed to take down the changes..

SpeedStep technology has been a part of Intel's chips for quite some time albeit it is more sophisticated now, but the technology is pre-Pentium I believe.
The processor speed can be controlled by the user but the Intel Macs use the SMC to handle changing processor speed based partly on load and heat. Because this is done automatically within the CPU there's no need for the user to change processor speed in order to conserve battery life. That was definitely not the case with the PPC which required an external mechanism to change the voltage to the CPU to reduce speed. Hence the need for the feature in the Energy Saver preference to provide the alternative speed levels for AC and Battery operation.

  • Low clock speed with amd 3400+

    hi all,
i have an amd 3400+  64bit  and i have downloaded multiple hardware information programs which state that my CPU clock should be between 2.8ghz - 3 ghz with this type of processor, however i only have 2.1 ghz.I have searched the bios and have notice many features are unavilable, i basically cannot change anythings except boot devices and other things that are not usefull to me, my bios does not give the option to change clock speed, or voltage, or bus speed. my current FBS is 201 mhz and my motherboard is  MSI k8T800 7010 with phoenix awardbios 6.00pg version 1.14 03/02/04 can any one help me please i would like to get my processor to the correct speed of 3 ghz.

ah right, so it also says the maximum clock speed is 3000 mhz      , so with overclocking can my processor achieve this?  i have 1 mb of l2 cache.
EDIT what do i do with the bios though because i have a really slow fan that i need to speed up but as i said hardly anything can be done from my bios?!

  • M30 Centrino clock speed

I have a Satellite Pro M30 notebook and whenever i check the system information, it shows that the clock speed is at 598MHz, whereas the processor should run a 1.5GHz. I have tried using the "always high" option from the BIOS, but that does not change the freqency at all. the notebook is substantailly slower than it would be and it has been like this since i purchased it.
What can I do to fix this problem?
    Thank you for your help

Did you buy a new one or already used Notebook?
I ask you this because CPU speed is absolutely too low. It can happen after changing of motherboard because in this case it is necessary to update a special firmware to get the full CPU-speed.
Without this firmware the machine runs at a fixed speed around 600MHz. The best solution is to get in contact with the Toshiba Service partner and ask them if they can check motherboard.

  • I5 clock speeds

I have intel_pstate disabled and am using the ondemand governor and my processor doesn't seem to run any slower than 1.6GHz.  I also have a laptop that has an i7 (again with intel_pstate disabled and ondemand) and it will run as low as 800MHz.  I believe that my laptop has a 2.2GHz chip and I know that my desktop (the i5) has a 3.1GHz chip.  Is there a set number of steps that the chip is able to run at, therefore causing the lowest step on the faster chip to be faster than the lowest step on the slower chip?  I would like to be able to get my desktop to idle at a slower clock speed.  Is there anyway I can do this?  According to the wiki, I can set the minimum clock speed in /etc/default/cpupower, but will I run into stability issue if I plug 800MHz into min_freq?  Thanks.

    WonderWoofy wrote:
The lowest frequency doesn't really matter as much as as how much your processor is able to enter sleep states.  So when it is idling, it isn't at the lowest frequency level at all and is hardly using any power.
In reality, unless you are having problems with it, you should really use the intel_pstate driver.  The ondemand governor worked well for many years, but was designed for processors over a decade ago.  Things have changed and the pstate driver was designed and tailored to work with today's Intel processors.  I don't see why you wouldn't take advantage of that if it works correctly for you.
I disabled it as part of some debugging some time ago, and things are actually snappier without it so it got left off.  It is a noticeable difference on the laptop, and extends my battery slightly

  • Nf750-g55 phenom 2 965 clock speed issue

Hi all new to the forum here,
I seem to have an issue with my clock speed showing up higher than i have it set in the bios according to cpuz. Regardless of what I had the clock speed set at, it keeps appearing as 4ghz (200 x 20) in cpuz when i check it. It is affecting my stability when testing because regardless of the adjustments made in the bios, it still appears to be at 4ghz according to cpuz. If anyone has experience with this and can help me I would appreciate it, thanks.

what changes you made in bios setup?
and what's current bios version installed?
I was originally running at that speed 4 ghz (200 x 20) but only tested for stability. I wanted to re overclock by fooling around with some fsb numbers, also while benchmarking at different intervals. This is when I realized the problem when I downloaded cpuz, as before I was testing only via prime95. Even with small jumps in clock speed in the bios, it was unstable, which i think is attributed to "being stuck at 4ghz" while I can get it stable with 1.48-1.5v. Bios is version 1.2, and any changes made that are not default appears to have the same problem.
I do not understand why my Cpu meter gadget shows the correct speed according to the bios, while cpuz show the 4ghz speed.

  • Pavilion g7 Clock Speeds

This question will probably have a very short answer, but is there ANY WAY I can change the FSB clock speed of my Pavilion g7 1355dx? I am completely aware of what this might do to my computer, and this thing is way beyond any type of warranty anyways.
Also, side note just out of curiousity, am I able to swap out the A6-3400M with an A10-4600M?

Hi thereSuperMechaCow!: you could explore your BIOS by hitting the F10 key & see if the option to change it exists but even if does I doubt it would work because any option pertaining to any type of overclocking is rendered null & void by OEM's such as HP so owners wouldn't aggresively OC their PC & if things go wrong they wouldn't be able to make this company liable.
    these features are considered vestigal
as an example I owned a 2001 model Pavilion 7965.
the Amazon MB had a hidden clock muliplier option in its BIOS
it allowed you to set it(from 8x -16x) but it wouldn't work
I didn't find any options indicating that you could swap out the A6 for an A-10

  • X1600 Clock Speeds on 128MB C2D MBP

Has anyone received a basic 15.4" Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with the 128MB X1600? There are reports that the 256MB version is now clocked at around 420MHz core and 450Mhz memory and scores nearly 4000 points on 3DMark05 which is a big improvement over the original MBP. I was just wondering if the 128MB version is similarly clocked and how well it scores.
There just seems like too big a price difference between the 128MB model and the 256MB model so I don't want to spend extra if I don't need to.

The clock speed is only part of the issue...its the RAM that will make a big difference, or not, depending on your applications.
As a general rule of thumb, however, I advise folks to get the biggest/fastest video card they can in a laptop (assuming they need more than an entry-level machine) as, like the CPU, they generally cannot be upgraded.
If you play 3D games, get the 256MB card. If not, the 128MB will probably suffice. Of course, if that's the case, then you might be more than satisfied with the performance of the MacBook (which would save you a nice chunk of change).
That's my $0.02 anyway...and yes, I know this didn't answer the question directly, but I do hope it offers Will some useful information...

  • IBook Clock Speed

    Hi there
I own an iBook G4 12" 1.33Ghz. Obviously, when the processor speed is set to Highest, it runs at 1.33Ghz.
However, when it's set to Reduced, what is the actual clock speed it changes to? Is there any way to alter this default "reduced" clock speed at all?
    Cheers

    Hi James_W,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I believe it the reduced processor speed of a 1.33Ghz iBook is 666Mhz found in iBook Developer Note: System Software.

  • [G505s] Clock speeds stuck at 2.1ghz since BIOS 2.05 update

    I have a Lenovo G505s with an A10-5750M APU
and since the BIOS upgrade from earlier this year (link to BIOS update)
my clock speed has not gone over 2.1ghz. During BIOS 2.03 my laptop
was able to reach 3.1ghz stable after power switched to the adapter
instead of battery, but now during BIOS 2.05 my processor clock speed
has been stuck (at 2.1ghz) and doesn not change with power plans of either
Windows 8 or Lenovos Energy Management Tool. Is any one else experiencing
this issue and/or have a workaround for this problem?
Thank you for your time and hope to hear from the community.

Replace current bios download link with the correct filename of needed bios.
    83cn33ww.exe is v2.03
    83cn32ww.exe is v2.02
I often wonder why either a good question or concern is often overlooked on these forums.  Maybe this is not a popular model in the States?  Where are all the self proclaimed computer experts that seem to post all over the internet?  How about Lenovo Support Staff?  Guess it's a little early in the evening to be so critical, but I thought I would pass on this nugget of knowledge, especially considering the bios downgrade helped.

  • Re: helix CPU speed stuck at low clock speed

Admin edit - Reorganizing this thread slightly as we are actively investigating the symptoms being discussed here.  Several different low end clock speeds of 600-800mhz are being reported capped under a variety of circumstances - sometimes cold boot, sometimes after suspend / resume or dock / undock
    motku wrote:

    Mark, theres more.
I found a "pseudo  workaround" of this problem and hope this could lead to the real workaround.
What helped - installing win7, lenovo power manager, change power plan to other and change back to previous)
I tried to do some research and what i found:
In normal Lenovo power manager wheres 2 options in power plan:
System perfomance (Maximum turbo, Turbo, Balanced, Low) (lets call it PERF) and Optimise fan control to (Maximize perfomance, Balance all parameters) (lets call it FCNTL.
In theory FCNTL must control only fans, like table of data cpu temperature/fan speed. But in reality it affects CPU speed.
Only way to make PC always select speed from lowest to highest is to set PERF=Maximum turbo or Turbo, FCNTL=Maximize perfomance.
Lets go through options how they really works in practice:
    PERF
Maximum turbo and Turbo are equal, means highest speed for CPU with turbo boost. The level of turbo bust is always maximum, Turbo didnt mean "slow turbo boost".
Low - cpu always at lowest speed 800mhz - thats ok.
Balanced - this option works a little crazy. In some situations it means "maximum cpu till 63C", in some situations it means "lowest speed, temperature doesnt matter. Why is it working in different ways but in same settings i dont know.
In theory Balance is something like "from lowest cpu speed till normal cpu speed, no turbo boost", but it doesnt work like that at all.
    FCNTL
Maximize perfomance - in theory it must be "try to keep CPU on lowest temp when high load"
In practice its like "Balanced in PERF" - logic is unknown.
Balanced - the same, logic is unknown.
Unknown really means, that when i, for example, setup  PERF=Maximum turbo or turbo and FCNTL to Balanced, sometimes it works in full speed and sometimes not.
Maybe there is logic, but it tottaly unknown to users.
The bad thing is that theres no way i can set mode "always run cpu from lowest speed till highest speed without turbo boost, 800-1800mhz".
By the way, there is some error in Lenovo power manager - when i change options in power plan and click "apply", sometimes they a apply, and sometimes not. If not, i need to select other power plan, and then select the needed one back.
Now about how this all can happend. I'm not shure that i'm right, but logically it is:
In Lenovo power manager theres option called "Optimise fan control to". And, there is NO such option in real windows power plan, so, it can be only changed through Lenovo power manager. As i see, this option affects maximum cpu speed. So, lets say, if this option is "damaged" some way, theres no way it can be fixed in windows 8, because Lenovo power manager for windows 8 has too few options, and native windows power plan editor doesnt have this option at all. So, when i done "something" in Lenovo power manager for windows 8, it changed that setting and all ruined.
Sorry for my bad english once more, hope you can understand what am i trying to say. Looks like we have 1) an error in power manager for win8 and 2) incorrect power option logic, or "specific" logic without a manual.
The strange thing, that in BIOS we have this options too. But changes in BIOS doesnt affect this at all.
P.S. by the way, when i got my helix, dock battery was having "wear level" = 1%. Now, after 6 days (battery info 5 cycles) it has "wear level" = 2%. Is it normal, or battery is bad?

  • KT4V / Athlon 2400 Clock Speed Problem

    Hi,
I have recently built a system with the following specs:
    Mobo: MSI  KT4V-L Ultra
    CPU: Athlon XP 2400
    Memory: 512 DDR (2700)
    Vidieo: Geforce Mx440
    PSU: 350 W
    OS: Windows 98 SE
    CPU Temp: 41 Idle
         49 Under Load
I booted up the system and the bios recognised the cpu as an athlon xp 1800. It booted into windows and windows also detected it as an 1800 (and no this wasn't the clock speed..) I ran MSI Fuzzy Logic 4
and that detected fsb as 100 and Multiplier as 15.
I initially tried to up the fsb but that was causing the pc to hang as soon as it went much over 110. I was a little confused by now as I thought an athlon 2400 XP
should run with Multiplier of 15 and fsb of 133 giving ~2000 Mhz. I went into the bios and changed the multiplier from Auto to fixed 13.5, leaving the fsb at 100.
When I rebooted the BIOS detected the chip as 2400 XP. Windows also confirms this, Fuzzy logic 4 states the Multiplier is 20 and the chip is running at 2000 Mhz. I couldn't quite understand this so I ran WCPUID which also confirmed an Internal Clock speed of 2000Mhz.
This has all confused me a little - can anyone explain this? I thought the Multiplier on Athlon XP's was locked... and how did it get to 20!! Or is my CPU not really running at that speed?? The Realtime Clock
Count in WCPUID was also measuring at 2000 Mhz.
As already stated I can't get the fsb over 115 without the pc hanging....
( All other settings in the BIOS are as default )
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi there,
    I have a similar problem, except on a KT3 Ultra2-R running an Athlon XP2100.
To make a long story short, awhile ago I tried to optimized my CMOS settings, and the thing wouldn't boot...and when I could get into CMOS settings again, the dang thing wouldn't let me change the FSB at all, and I was stuck at 100 FSB, and my XP2100 was recognized as an XP1500 (I guess 100 x 13 = 1.300 gigahertz).
After reading your post here, I changed the CPU ratio to be 12.5/13, and lo and behold, when I got into Fuzzy Logic, my CPU was registering 2.000 gigs with a 20 CPU multiplier and my CPU was now an Athlon XP2400! I don't know where they got that 20 CPU X from, but I ran a test on Sysandra, and yep, Sysandra says it's an XP2400 and the test benchmark puts it around that level.
So...my XP2100 is now seemingly an XP2400, but my FSB is still a paltry 100FSB...this seems to affect memory benchmark testing, as my DDR333 RAM is auto sync with the 100FSB :(
Anyway, any of you guys run into stability problems? I just ordered an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard before I found this thread, so wondering if I should return it!
    Thanks.

  • CPU Clock speeds

This is a simple one for you guys today.
I have noticed on these forums that most clock speeds are at least 133.  My BIOS is showing
    Current CPU clock 1250
    CPU FSB clock 100
I am no master of the darker regions of the BIOS but should I be running a bit faster looking at my set up below?

    Cheers Guys
Both jumpers J10 and J11 were set to 133/166 already.  I think it must have defaulted at sometime.  I installed SP2 the other day, don't know if that effected it
I changed the set up to manual and changed to 1:1, (the ratio was set to 'By SPD').
    Happy days

  • Changing clip speed causes Premiere to crash?

Hi, I'm making a video series and I have a problem. Everytime I change the speed of at least two clips in my timeline, sooner or later a message will come up saying "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Elements to shut down. We will attempt to save your current project."
I have looked up the problem online and found another person who had my problem (He was on Premiere CS3). He says he was absolutely sure that the problem was caused by changing the clip speed.
Can anyone help me with this?

I suspect the issue is due to your video format... what format are your videos? Your problem will be solved by converting them to DV-AVI. See this FAQ on conversion:

  • How do I change the speed of a video clip after making it a Smart Object?

In order to apply the same Camera Raw filter to every segment of a clip I was going to split multiple times, I converted the whole clip to a Smart Object, applied my Camera Raw filter settings, and then split the clip and deleted some portions.  Now I want to make certain portions of those clips slow-motion, but even if I right-click on the right side of the layer and select "Clear Smart Filters", all I see when I right-click on the clip in the timeline are the motion options; I can no longer change the speed or the audio.  Is there a way to do this without having to make all the cuts in the beginning, changing the speed and the audio, and then having to go back and convert each individual segment into a smart object and then apply the same ACR filter to each one?

    Brett,
Thanks for addressing this question.  I tried it and see that the embedded file is the entire clip that I started with, not the trimmed version that I turned into a SO, but at least I could go back and make a change that way in a pinch.
If you wouldn't mind looking at this video between :50 and 1:40, and tell me if you think that AE or PP would give me significantly better results in the jumping segments where I slowed it down to 25%:  2014-06-26 And the last thing I expected to see jump out of the box was Albert Einstein! on Vimeo.  I am trying to keep my expenses down by only using PS CC for video editing, and love the Camera Raw filter capabilities.  By using PS CC it also lets me lay down my audio and edit to the audio w/o, as Mylenium suggested, outputting my file from PS CC into either AE or PP to do the slow-mo part.
    Thanks again for your help!
