Changing color of object in Photoshop CS4

I have an object, basically a product picture. It is mostly white. I would like to make it completely black, or at least shades of black. Is there an easy way in Photoshop to do this? Thanks!

You need to select the outline of the object and either desturate (ie remove colour) it or, for better results, use a Black and White adjustment layer.

  • Spot Channels & Smart Objects in Photoshop CS4

    Please Help!
I am trying to replace a smart object in Photoshop CS4 with a .psd, pdf or tiff image that contains a spot channel and it is not being honored in Photoshop
The Channel tab does not honor the "Spot Channel" from the replaced Smart Object image.
Question is: How can I replace a Smart Object and hold the spot channel?
    Thank you

I don't believe spot channels transfer from smart objects but there is a workaround.
    1. Select Smart Object Layer. Layer: Smart Objects: New Smart Object Via Copy
    2. Open the new smart object
    3. Load spot channel as a selection.
    4. Layer: New Fill Layer: Solid color.
    5. Hide or delete all other layers.
    6. Save and return to parent document
    7. Load the smart object layer as a selection and hide the layer
    8. Invert selection, save selection
    9. Change the new alpha to the appropriate spot color channel
Let me know if that doesn't work.

  • Jagged edge of Smart Objects in Photoshop CS4!

Vector graphics created in Illustrator CS4 and pasted as Smart Objects into Photoshop CS4 used to appear perfectly smooth. This has stopped. I now get very jagged edged Smart Objects which are quite useless. I have checked all the Edit preferences and made sure Anti Alias is turned on in the Illustrator files to no effect. What can be done about this? What has suddenly changed and why? Would uninstalling & reinstalling CS4 solve this problem? Has anyone else experienced this and found the solution?

    Hi OldBob1957,
Thanks for your helpful suggestion and the links which I've noted for future
    reference.
However, I think the problem is solved and I'm indebted to Chris Cox of
    Photoshop Family for
No idea. The only time I saw this happen was when someone mistakenly turned
    off the antialias
feature when placing the smart object. (which is why I put the antialias
    checkbox in the transform
toolbar to make it more visible in later releases)
And of course when I checked I had done exactly that and been struggling for
    weeks!
    Now unblinkered.

    John

  • Why can't I change colors of objects?

why can't I change colors of objects?

Thanks KT.  I did mean the Fill color, but my real issue is that changing the fill color in the inspector doesn't change the color of the selected object.  In tis case, I was trying to chnage the fill color from pale blue to the more ingense blue:

  • Can't get "true" height of text box (text object) in Photoshop CS4-CS6 on Mac

I'm seeing this behavior in CS4, CS5 and CS6 on the Mac using AppleScript. When I get the height of a text object layer as such:
         tell app "Adobe Photoshop CS4"
              tell current document
set textObjectHeight to height of text object of art layer 1
              end tell
         end tell
The value returned doesn't match the height of the text object. In my mind the text object is the box that's displayed when I click on text in a text layer with the text tool active. The value for the width appears to match, just as I'd expect.
I'm trying to get the height and width of the text box (text object) so that I can draw a box "underneath" it on another layer so that one can tell where the text box is. Kind of an FPO-type assistant. I'm currently using the position values and the height and width to create a colored box. I realized that the height isn't exactly right.
Any help would be great appreciated. I've not explored the use of Javascript thus far, but am open to that as a solution.
    Thanks,
    Stephan

I tried your code and it works just fine here… I used CS5 to try it… Here is a screen shot… I just put a solid fill layer at the bottom so you can see the guides…
Script editor's event log gives me…

      activate
get position of text object of art layer 1 of current document
                        {150.0, 100.0}

make at end of current document with properties {name:"fill"} new art layer
art layer 2 of document "Untitled-1"
              select current document region {{150.0, 100.0}, {950.0, 100.0}, {950.0, 549.999969482422}, {150.0, 549.999969482422}} without antialiasing

  • How do I stop automatic placement of files as a smart object in Photoshop CS4?

I have done numerous searches on the internet to find out how to stop Photoshop from placing files as a smart object. I followed the suggestion of going to Edit > Preferences > General to uncheck the "Place or Drag Raster Images as Smart Obejct" but that option does not appear in Photoshop CS4. Does anyone know how to deal with this issue in CS4?

This may sound strange, but to avoid the "Smart Object" designation, just stop "placing" the files. Either open them, or copy and paste them into Photoshop.
If you're just opening raster files in Photoshop, they come in as pixels - drag a newly opened raster file onto your target Photoshop file. If you're copy/pasting art from Illustrator, you can choose at the time whether it is a "Smart Object," or "Pixels." Sounds like you want pixels.

  • Motion 4 and 3D objects from Photoshop CS4?

Anyone know if Motion 4 can work with 3D formats supported in Adobe's Photoshop CS4? i.e. U3D, 3DS, OBJ, DAE, KMZ??
    Thanks, Rob.

    Hmmm...yes and no.
For example Cinema 4D -- produce your 3D object and even animate it if so desired, leave off the lighting as one would want Motion to handle that since it can even if limited. Put the 3D object in Motion and go to town on composition with 3D camera motion and lighting. Motion is not really manipulating the object, but it's treating it as a real 3D object in a real 3D camera space. And for that matter Motion could do reflective surfaces (if updated to do so).
Yes they are different, but they are relative parts of the development of a composition (movie, commercial, or even just a web ad). It's part of the process, a part that is seriously MISSING in FCS 3 and in any Apple's pro applications lineup.
Now I realize Cinema 4D isn't cheap $1000 entry (unless you get Student version) up to $3600 for a full studio bundle. This is obviously a big step up. BUT, Apple don't necessarily have to go as far as Cinema 4D -- a simplified variant say equal to Cinema 4D core product $1000. If you think it justifies a separate product (similar to the now dead Shake) then sell it as such but provide support for it's output in Motion.
Point being, there is a BIG HOLE in the Apple Pro Application lineup. Apple have Aperture, FCS, LS, but nothing in the world of 3D. Heck, even a limited 3D tool is a start, something to fill the void -- like AC3D (support OSX) $80 -- even if somewhat primitive it can be start.
Sure, no full body and even room scanners like the Pro's use, but just to getting something primitive going.
    Rob.

  • Change colors of objects when pressing (D)efault keyboard shortcut?

    Hi There,
Is is possible to change the colors an object gets when I press the (D) keyboard shortcut.  As it stands, the object defaults to black stroke with white fill, but I want to know if it is possible to configure it so that I can choose what the default stroke and fill color are for the shortcut.
    Thanks,
    Laz

    Hey Mylenium,
I didn't see the Make current appearance default in the Appearance panel, or it's drop down.  Can you help me get to it?
    See attached.  I'm on CS5.

  • Colors Are Off in Photoshop CS4

I've been having an annoying problem with Photoshop CS4 recently. The colors displayed in the application are way off--yellow appears tan, green appears grayish green, etc.--in the application. They look fine in saved files opened in other applications and even look fine in Photoshop's Navigator, as you can see in the screenshot below. I've chosen View | Proof Colors, tried different settings in Edit | Color Settings and View | Proof Setup, but nothing works.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

       Oh, brother!
That's like burying your head in the sand.
Now you are not looking at an accurate display of the file in each computer.
Now you are looking at how the file looks like in any other computer with an ideal monitor that had its monitor profile set to sRGB.
Of course, if the monitor's native profile is close to sRGB and you're dealing with an sRGB file, then you'll get a pretty good approximation.  But if you're dealing with a larger color space like Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB and/or a wide-gamut and larger-gamut monitor, the truth is that you have absolutely no clue as to what your image really looks like.
In sum, a monumentally bad idea.

  • Change color of clothing in Photoshop?

    Hello,
There's a nifty filter in After Effects called Change Color, with which you can select the color of a shirt in a photo, for example, adjust the threshold of the color to change, and quickly change the color of clothing, in very realistic way, in one step. I don't see a similar tool in Photoshop. Does anyone know if there is one? Thank you!

If you're looking for penultimate quality, I imagine you'd want to try to select/mask the garment in question with a high quality selection/mask, then do something like a Hue/Saturation adjustment (layer).
Russell Brown's video shows how to use selection and the Refine Edges function, which I'm sure would work with a colored shirt or whatever quite well...
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-russell-brown-show/masking-basics-in-photoshop-cs5/
Short of going all the way per the above video, the Hue/Saturation function itself allows you to affect color ranges.  Sometimes this can be enough in itself.  Depends on the level of realism in the detail you want to achieve.

  • Placing from Photoshop to InDesign is changing colors of object

I can't find anywhere on the Internet, through about an hour of searching now why my vibrant sRGB objects I made in photoshop look so drab when I place them in an InDesign file.
I don't know if it's being changed from RGB to CMYK...I've tried a few different options from suggestions I found online that sounded like it might be the solution...but am still left with dead looking images.
This is an example of how it looks like in photoshop
And then what it looks like when I place it into an InDesign Document
So, I don't know what's going on or why the color has to be changed like this...but hopefully one of you gurus can tell me how to fix this!
The problem I have is that I created a brochure entirely in photoshop and I really don't like how the text gets pixelated when blown up or how it can't be selected if need be...so I'm recreating the brochure in InDesign...but this whole color change issue is really perturbing me!
Thanks in advance for the help!
Oh...and if there is a link somewhere out there that says how to make InDesign brochures so that the graphics show up sharp without taking up a ton of memory so the pdf's can be emailed...that would be awesome!

to reduce file size--try exporting as PDFX1a (preset)
In this case, that's probably NOT a good plan. PDF/X-1a converts everything to CMYK and only downsamples images above 450 ppi and then only to 300 ppi. It's meant for press. For email I personally would start with the [High Quailty Print] preset, then use the PDF optimizer in Acrobat Pro to flatten the transparency and downsample the images, to 150 ppi to start, but you may need to go further, and to throw out most of the extraeoous document info your readers don't need (basically check every box except the one to unembed fonts). I think the flattening in Acrobat is better than flattening in ID during export and most of the rest is only available in the PDF optimzer. If you don't have Acrobat Pro, try the Smallest File Size preset in ID.
Keep in mind that there is ALWAYS a tradeoff between file size and image quality. You are shooting for a middle ground.

  • CS5 Photoshop - changing color of object

    Hello
How do you change the colors of these chairs to green? I tried to do image>adjustments>replace color but it isn't very clean. It shows the red still.
Do you create a mask with an alpha channel? If so, how again?
    Thanks in advance.

To isolate the red chairs you could do   Select > color range   and the sample the red of the chair (shift click to add more range of red to the selection, use a low to medium fuziness value).
Add a hue adjustment layer and adjust to to get the green you would like.
finally you will probabaly need to fine tune the mask of the adjustment layer by painting black on it on areas which you do not want changed - you should get something like this.

  • Change color of object

I have a image I am editing in photoshop CS, I want to replace the black color of an object with blue, I've done this in the past but for some reason the Contrast/brightness tool is not working, I can change the brightness but the object is just staying black. I tried using the magic wand and selecting the object and then fillinf it but that leaves uneven edges.

Have you tried enabling the tint checkbox? That can be used to add color. (if necessary you can use a selection to create the mask for the hue/saturation/luminance adjustment layer).
Another solution is to create a selection for the black area, then with a new layer add a mask to it and fill that layer with a color (not necessarily in that order) then you can use a blend mode or opacity to allow any texture to show through if there is any.

  • Best way to isolate and change color of object

I have a client that wants hundreds of product photos edited in 8 weeks. The color of the product item needs to be changed for each of the color choices available. The product is shown in a full room display, meaning lots of background imagery and color.
What's the best (quickest and most accurate) way to select the product? What's the best way to change it to the accurate color?

Selective color, color range, replace color, convert to LAB, use channels...all methods work. But in the production of "hundreds" of images, you have to outline objects and set up the color shift through adjustment layers. Then it's actionable and not pure drudgery!
