Changing default drive

Recently installed, mounted and named an external drive. Can iPhoto, iTunes (and other applications) have their libraries and additions thereto be assigned to the external hard drive as the default drive?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
They can, but there is a significant problem with this. Data backup becomes difficult as you now have your data on two different drives. It no longer becomes simply a matter of cloning, especially if you have issues daisy chaining the drives on your Mac Mini. If you can get two drives to reliably daisy chain via the Firewire port, great. Otherwise it may be time to consider someone helping you install a larger internal drive for your Mac Mini.
For iPhoto you can put the entire Users -> yourname Pictures folder on your external hard drive, and empty it on your internal drive. When iPhoto asks you if you want to locate a library have it navigate to your external drive.
For iTunes you can set in its preferences which folder it reads the library from and then tell it to manage all the files there.

I'm afraid you can't, but do I remember some threads here to disable using the A: drive - try the forum's search.

  • How can I change the default  driver to OracleXADataSource in JDeveloper

    Hello,
How can I change the default oracle driver: oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver to oracle.jdbc.xa.client.OracleXADataSource in JDeveloper Studio Edition Version 11.1.1.0.2, Build JDEVADF_MAIN.BOXER_GENERIC_090328.0229.5205.
If I modify the file connections.xml from jdeveloper\system\system11.1.1.0.31.52.05\o.jdevimpl.rescat2\connections in the sense that I change the driver class, then in JDeveloper when I test my connection I have this problem: Test failed: oracle.jdbc.xa.client.OracleXADataSource cannot be cast to java.sql.Driver
Why do I need this XA version of the oracle driver? Well I tried, from a book to reproduce the model of an application: entities, stateless and stateful session beans, mdb, web services and a client to test one part of the model.
And because of the JMS server I need an XA driver.
I deployed to the integrated wls 10.3 and when I test my client, if I use the default driver for the connection the an error message appears tell me either to emulate two-phase commit or to use XA driver.
My application works very well, if I configured in the console of the integrated wls 10.3 a datasource with the same name as my ide/application connection that has for the Driver Class Name: oracle.jdbc.xa.client.OracleXADataSource in the Connection Pool tab.
    Thank you.

Open DIsk Utility and in the toolbar select Disk Image. The file selector will open and you'll have to do three things: 1) just as with any file, name it and point the file selector to where you want it to be saved, 2) near the bottom you'll see name - type iWork 2013 and 3) below that select the image size. Click on size, choose custom and type 1500 MB then click on the Create button.
Some time will pass and then you'll see an external disk pop up on your desktop and/or the Finder window sidebar. Drag the three programs into it and eject it like any other external disk. Now delete the programs from your applications window.
Where ever it was you pointed the file selector to you'll see the file you created. Double click on it and the disk image will mount again.

  • Changing iDVDs default drive

My 104 superdrive went bad and will not burn discs any more, though it will still read discs fine. I now have an external LaCie drive, with works wonderful.
My issue is that I now need to create a OneStep disc, and iDVD wishes to use only the internal (non-working) drive.
Does anyone know how to change the default drive that iDVD uses, so that when I do a OneStep disc, it will allow me to use the external drive?
    Thanks.

    Hi Michael:
    This is one way-
    1. Edit your movie in iMovie and put in your iDVD chapter markers.
    2. Save the iMovie project and exit.
    3. Open iDVD and create a new project. You can now choose where the project will be stored.
    4. Go to File => Import=> Video
    5. Navigate to your iMovie project folder and select the .mov file that has the same name as your iMovie project.
    6. It will ask you whether to import chapter markers, which, if you made any, you do.

  • Change default USB sound driver.

Due to my laptop crashing everytime I change my usb device, trial and error is taking me forever so I was hoping someone can guide me.
I can't work out how to change the default driver for my external card.
    This is my alsa-base.conf
    # lists the order of the sound cards
    options snd slots=snd_ca0106,snd_hda_intel
    options snd_ca0106 index=1
#-2 means that it will never be loaded as the primary card.
    options snd_hda_intel index=0
    This is my asound.conf
    defaults.ctl.card 0
    defaults.pcm.card 0
    This is my modprobe.conf
    options snd-hda-intel index=0
    options snd-ca0106 index=1
    (Is there more information needed?)
However, the driver that is loaded is snd_usb_audio, I remove it and load ca0106 manually and check lsmod to find that it's not being used by anything. How do I point my card in the right direction?
Or perhaps someone can point me in the right direction for getting this sorted, I know it's something easy.
    Cheers!

Thanks for the reply, I'm quite clueless about this.
I'm trying to load the ca0106 driver for my external usb soundcard, a creative soundblaster live 5.1. The speakers were working fine with snd_usb_audio driver but the problem was that the headphone socket wasn't there (mapped in mixer).
After some searching I found out that the ca0106 is the correct driver for the hardware and after seeing this pastebin.com/8hkyJC14 on another post, I noticed there was a mixer setting for 'phones'. Score. I presume I would get all that functionality just by using the ca0106 driver?
I can't get my head around all these configuration files
    asound.state - modules.conf - alsa-base.conf - .asoundrc
Here's what I've got so far, from my search and your advice:
    I modified .asoundrc:
    snd_hda_intel {
    type hw
    card 0
    snd_ca0106 {
    type hw
    card 2
    pcm.ca0106 {
    type hw
    card 2
    ctl.ca0106 {
    type hw
    card 2
But I don't know what pcm or ctl do. Also, it was advised from somewhere else that I use the 'card' identifier as the name of my hardware, which I found to be 'External'. I decided against it, being aware that there is a lot of outdated information floating around. Wise?
My alsa-base.conf now looks like this:
    # lists the order of the sound cards
    options snd-ca0106 index=1 vid=041e pid=3040
    options snd_hda_intel index=0
Is the vId and pid a good thing to have there? I can change my device to what I want in alsamixer so the order isn't important.
I cam across a little problem and I'm wondering...
    in the file /proc/asound/modules
    I have
    0 snd_hda_intel
I wanted to add the snd_ca0106 but I can't write to the file as it's always in use. Is this another case of duplicate configuration files or is it necessary?
Do I have to set a conf file in modprobe to autoload the ca0106 driver?
I can't find any information on it because I'm probably being a moron not doing something obvious, I hope someone can point it out! So confused.
    Cheers

  • DANGER: Do Not Change Hard Drive Ownership and Permissions

DANGER: Do Not Change Hard Drive Ownership and Permissions (Unless you know what you are doing... I didn't!)
    FIRST, THE REPAIR PERMISSIONS SOLUTION:
Use Disk Utilities on the "Sofware Install and Restore" DVD that came with your computer to set the permissions back to the defaults. Not the MacOSX Installation Disk. (This worked in MacOS 10.3.9)
    MY SCREW UP
In my Hard Drive's "Get Info" dialog I switched the permissions of the Owner to my username and all others to no access. I had not yet closed the dialog and decided that it was probably dangerous so I started changing them back. I first changed the owner back to system. It asked for authentication.
After entering my password I assumed that I would be able to go back and change the others as well. Nope! The dialog disappeared, my desktop disappeared and I couldn't do anything. I was locked out.
After ten minutes of the beachball I restarted to the "Panther Installation disk" and tried repairing permissioins using disk utility. Evertime it "lost contact" with the system and would not work. Restarting (without CD) took me to a root user login (black sreen). My username and password did nothing.
    THE SOLUTION
I then restarted to the "Software Install and Restore" DVD that came with my computer and used its Disk Utility to repair permissions. IT WORKED! It set permissions back to the default. THANK GOD.
NOTE: I wonder, will using the Install and Restore DVD to repair permissions reset any computer's files to the defaults? Is that a backdoor into someones currently restricted files and folders? (Assuming that you have physical access and the computer specific DVD)

Using the Repair Permissions function will not change the permissions on an account's home folder or anything in it, but there are at least two other ways in which someone with a Mac OS X 10.4 installation disk can get access to an account's files or folders unless some or all of those files are encrypted.

  • Changing External Drives with Organiser PE 9

    XP operating system
I have a large number of images on an external hard drive which is  almost full. I copied all the images to a bigger hard drive and trying  to be smart I changed the drive of the new disc to that of the old one.  Of course Organiser knew better  and uses the old hard drive with the  new drive number.
How can I get organiser and my Catalog to use the new hard drive?
I have tried restoring missing files but this does not work.
    Any other ideas?

    Thank you Colin
I think this will work but I am unclear on one of the directions
In the Change Music Folder Location window that appears, navigate to the location where you would like your new Music folder to be created. Note: By default, your iTunes Music folder is a folder named "iTunes Music" in ~/Music/iTunes/ where the tilde "~" represents your home directory. In Windows, the default location is:
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
Click the New Folder button in the Change Music Folder Location window.
"In the Change Music Folder Location window that appears, navigate to the location where you would like your new Music folder to be created."
Do they mean to click on the new drive and then click on new folder button ?

  • Changing default directory locations

I have Vista RC1 installed on a boot partition of my PC, I have changed the default location of "Documents" to my F: drive. Now I want to be able to change the defult location of "Public" folders, so that the dat ais stored on my G: drive.
I have tried to do this , but when i look at the Properties of Public\Music for example, it will not let me change the location value.
Does anyone know how i can get around this?

How do I change the default drive for downloads and installs to d:\program files or d\program files(x86) in Windows 8? I have installed a ssd boot drive and use it  as windows boot and upgrade drive. It's a 300gb drive with 280gb operating space and
95gb free. I don't want programs automatically installing to this drive. I have to keep changing the drive letter during installs (and some installs don't even ask).

  • Unable to change printer driver

Since upgrading to 10.8, there are no option for changing the printer driver when you click "Options & Supplies" for a printer. Under the "Driver" tab, I can only change the settings for the driver I chose when I set up the printer.
Is there anyway (besides CUPS webinterface) I can change the driver, or do I have to remove it and add it again with the other driver?

I am currently setting up some new imacs and encountered this problem.
The Ricoh technician talked me throught this and it now works perfectly.
Install the printer drivers you need
    Install Equitrac 10.7
    Add printer through Equitrac
    Open browser and type localhost:631
if it says web interface is currently disabled run "cupsctl WebInterface=yes" in Terminal (I did this under root user)
    refresh browser page
    At top go to Administration
Under Printers go to "anage printer"
    select printer you want
click on administration (next to maintenance)
    click on modify printer
    add admin/pw
Current connection should be chosen printer go "continue"
    Modify go "continue"
next to make Generic choose "Select another make/model"
Choose printer (in this case I chose Ricoh)
    select driver - then "modify"
Go back to Admininstration > Manage Printers again
Select printer (driver should be showing)
Go to admin > set default options
Go to Policies > retry job
    Set default options
Restart machine and then do a test print.. Equitrac should pop up and you go from there..
I credit this information to Stu from Ricoh NZ... how wonderful that he was able to guide me through this..
Hope it helps you all out there...

  • How can I set a different default drive to burn disks

I use an external DVD/CD drive to burn disks. I want to set this as the default drive for disk utility to burn disks rather than the intertnal superdrive. How do is do this?

Press the Option key at startup, select the desired drive, and push the button with the straight arrow. To permanently change the setting, use the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

For some reason the scanner default driver is xerox pro scanner, I have no idea why. would like to change to hp officejet 7310xi which is connected to my laptop.

Thanks. That will also be nice in that I won't have to re-do all of my saved screensets every time.
Is there an easy way to open templates? I ask because Logic requires them to be saved to the "Project Template" folder, whereas I have all of my music stuff saved on an external firewire drive. Also, templates don't appear to show up under the "open recent" menu so I'm wondering if I'm going to have to go into that folder every time I need to use that template.
