Changing Default Folder Icon

How is the default folder icon changed within the system? I have a folder icon I want to use to replace the original blue folder.

Hi, Kirk -
There's a couple of ways to do that.
The easy way is to use Kaleidoscope - with it you can make customize the GUI's appearance a little or a lot.
The more difficult way is to use Apple ResEdit to alter the resources that Finder uses for that item, which can be found in the System file, the icl4 and icl8 resources.
Using Kaleidoscope has some advantages - changes won't disappear when the software is updated; and the changes are not made to the OS's files. They are superimposed externally, meaning it is easy to undo them - just turn Kaleidoscope off.
If you use ResEdit to do it, be sure to work on a copy of the System file, not on the original. Hang onto the original in case you evern want to revert back.
There is a third way, easier in principle than the previous two, but very tedious - change the icon for each folder you want to have the new icon individually. This is done via Copy and Paste in the Get Info window for an item. In the Get Info window, click on the pocture of the icon - a black box will appear around it, indicating the icon has been selected. You can then do a Copy or a Paste operation of the icon.

  • Changing the folder icon

I'm trying to change the folder icon for the Pictures folder. But, when I do, the Pictures icon on the left of the window also changes and becomes the same as the Pictures folder icon. I want the two of them to be different but can't seem to figure it out.

If you really want to get into it, changing application icons, most of them are separate .icns files within the application package.
For example, the Finder icon is
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/Finder.icns
When you select Finder.app-Ctrl-click and choose show package contents to dig further down.
Most of the other standard icons used by the Finder are in the same Resources folder.
If you install the Developer Tools package from the MacOS X Install DVD, you can use the Icon Composer to apply and save your own icons to pretty much anything.

  • Change the folder icon "properly"! not by "Get Info." window.

Hello everyone, I was wondering what is the way of changing the folder's icon "properly"? I don't mean the copy/paste of the icon in the "Get Info." window. Because whan I do that, the icon changes but the problem is when I press the Space Bar for "Quick View" it doesn't show an icon. So that's is why I thought there was another method.
p.s. System folders and drives show their custom icons with "Quick View"
Thanks, this is one of the small (pointless) bugs that tick me off...
    Regards

Sorry to tell you, but all that is totally unnecessary. Just do what Baltwo said but I'm sure that instead of "Open the app" he meant to write:
    •  "Quit from the app, Control-click (right-click) its icon" and choose "Show Package Contents". (That's what Baltwo really meant by "open"! )
    •  In "Resources" find the .icns that the app is currently using and - keeping the same name - replace it with yours (saved as an icns of course).
You can leave the app's original icns in the "Resources" folder (just in case you ever need it) as long as you change its name, e.g. add "BAK" to the name. It will do no harm sitting there.

  • Change multiple folder icons

Is there an apple script to change all my folder icons at once? I like the folder icons available for download from Apple's website, but don't want to go through the process of pasting the new icons in for every single folder.
    Thanks

Hi RevChris, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Hopefully someone will drop in with script or Automator ides, I think it's likely, but I use CandyBar...

  • Changing default folder for photo export

In iPhoto '09, version 8.1.2, under the new Mavericks operating system, whenever I want to export a photo from iPhoto, the default recipient folder is Documents.  I want them sent to the Desktop by default.  I can't find any way of changing this default.  Can anyone help?  (This seems to be new behavior under Mavericks.)
       Bob Anderson

Long time since I used 09, but in 11 it defaults to the last used folder. Have you tried pointing it to the desktop and then seeing if the subsequent exports go there?
Failing that a couple of things: in any export dialogue command-d will point immediately to the desktop. For more elaborate and feature rich alternatives check out Default Folder X

  • Change default folder view?

Hi. I was wondering if there was a way to change the default folder view. For instance, I'd like it so that when I create a new folder or open a new window it would be automatically in list view mode, and with the specific columns I want. Is this possible?

From the "view" menu choose "List View" uncheck in Prefs where you may have checked "Open new windows in column view".

  • Outlook 2011 - I can change default folder?

How i can change default open folder in Outlook 2011 (update 14.1.3)?
And how i can change default incoming mail folder (POP account)?

Here is what worked for me.
    changing the default application server.
    1) Verify that JSC2 is creating a WAR file in the project's dist directory.
    2) Download the Sun Java System Application Server 8.1
    3) Install the application server on another computer. E.g. 192.168.1.110
I changed the default port from 8080 to 80 because I wanted to port forward.
Don't know if this is required.
    4) Start the server! Browse to 192.168.1.110:80 and verify the server started.
    5) Run the admin console (192.168.1.110:4848) and manually deploy the WAR file
If you can't do this, it wont go.
Your browser might appear to get stuck. Wait for it to finish! Check your logs for errors.
If you get stuck, doublecheck that the server directory isn't write-protected.
    Test with a browser 192.168.1.110:80/ProjectName
    6) Tell JSC2 about the new server
Servers Tab -> Remote Servers -> rightclick -> Add Remote Server...
Select the right kind of server (Sun Java System Application Server 8.1)
    Admin Host: 192.168.1.110
    Admin Port: 4848
    Username: admin or whatever
    Password: shhhhh!
    7) Configure JSC2 to deploy the project to a different server during testing.
Projects Tab -> Right-click the project -> Properties -> Run -> select the new server.
    8) Click the little green triangle and it should deploy and start a browser to test.
    Trouble-shooting:
    - Problems will occur if you attempt to do things to fast. Don't cancel out of operations.
    - Don't modify any of you build.xml files
    - Don't compress the war file
    - Restart everything if you hit a problem
    - Don't ask me, I don't know anything about it. I just fiddled with it till it worked.
    - Turn off Netlimiter! (or any other bandwidth manager)
    - Turn off Antivirus monitoring software (stuff runs faster - security rish though)

  • Change Default Folder in Digital Editions?

How do you change the default folder in Digital Editions?

    Hi IceMaiden.
Yes, doing  a "Save As" and specifying a new drive should update the default storage location.
You can also move your project folders from your C drive to your external drive. (Don't change anything in the project folders; just copy the whole folder.)
To open your saved projects from the new location, use the Browse button on the saving screen and then browse to that drive.

  • Change default Folder for iTunes downloads?

The help section tells me how to change the folder in which internet files and podcasts are downloaded. But I don't know how to change the folder in which the music files I get right from iTunes are downloaded to. I tried changing the folder for internet/podcast files, but the songs are still going to the My Music folder in My Documents. I don't want my songs going to that folder as I already have another folder where I put my music. Any help would be appreciated.

you can take an event and "consolidate events" and that (should) allow you to move the events from that project to the other harddrive (Back-up first!). For new projects, when you import the video, import it to the new HD. I'm not sure that the project can be stored on that HD, needs to be where the iMovie application is i think, BUT, the information in the project is minimal compared to the video footage, so you will free up LOTs of space on main HD by not storing the video footage there.

  • Installing MS Office has changed default itunes icons how do I fix

The installation of MS Office has changed the default icons iTunes uses.
Does anyone know how to fix this.

Do they still open with iTunes?
If that's not so choose any one of them and "Get Info" cmd-i. The in the "Open with" pane choose iTunes, then select "Change all".
If it's just the icons try rebuiding the LaunchServices data base.
These are only cache files but can get corrupted. Launch /Utilities/Terminal and copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices: (be sure to copy the entire line it's a scroll)
    Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Then press return. Wait until terminal returns to the command line. Quit Terminal. After that, log out and back in or restart. Let us know.
Or, use the free utiltiy OnyX to do the same via gui

  • Changing finder/folder icons

What kind of file does an icon have to be?
I found some threads that said I had to copy and paste from the get info menus, but I have a jpg I want to use and these options aren't hilighted.
Do I have to download a specific file type to be able to paste it as an icon?
    Thanks
    John

I'm gonna go ahead and ask you to treat me like an idiot!
I opened the file in preview and copied it (from the edit menu)
I have the get info window open on the folder's whos icon I want to change. But the paste option is always greyed out. Do I have to access something from the get info menus?
Again I am sorry if I am lame in this subject. I am usually better than this.
