Changing Default Safari Search Engine

Is it possible to change the default search engine on Safari, and if so how?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions
You can change the default. The easier path is to install either Inquisitor or Glims. Both provide a more functional search feature, plus a variety of search engines from which to choose. Inquisitor's search is a bit more functional as it provides green indicators of search selections you made. That feature is in the offing for Glims. Overall Glims offers many more Safari features, while Inquisitor basically focuses on the Search function.

When installed, you'll find their respective preferences as a separate panel in Safari Preferences.

  • Change to Yahoo Search engine?

I was able to change the Safari Search engine from Google to Yahoo when using Tiger.
Since my upgrade to Leopard (easy install , few minor problems) I can't figure out how to make the switch. Anyone have any ideas?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

I recently downloaded a program called genio and as part of its installation process it changed my default search engine from google to genio. How can I change it back? The safari homepage is still google but it searches with genio. Please help!

You installed the "Genieo" spyware. Remove it by following the developer's instructions:

  • Bing is blocked as safari search engine

My default search engine for safari has always been Google, but all of a sudden it switched to Bing and when i go on the preference window, it shows Google as my default search engine. So why is it still Bing rather than Google?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "InstallMac" trojan. I suggest the procedure below to disable it. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the trojan (as long as you never reinstall it.)
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including one called "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Conduit," "Spigot," or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
    Step 2
In the Applications folder, there may be items named "Installer," "InstallMac," "Reset Search," or "Uninstall IM Completer." Drag each such item to the Trash.
    Step 3
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder should open with a file named "com.genieo.completer.download.plist" selected. There may be other files in the folder with a name beginning in "com.genieo." Move them all to the Trash.
Move this folder, if it exists, to the Trash in the same way:
    ~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer
Log out or restart the computer and empty the Trash.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install this trojan. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad has a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind this attack has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.

  • I've been using firefox for years, and i'm very upset with the 34.0.5 update's changes to the search engine feature.

    hi,
this new search engine is incredibly convoluted, and i put some real thought into why it's bad
the dropdown menu contains more things than it used to. previously only a list with icons and titles and a link to options...now only icons (with no options to include text), a reiteration of your terms and current engine, separators between each icon, and loads of potential results from auto-complete (which i disabled immediately). though taking up less space by forcing icons only, more things were added, giving the user more clutter in less space.
having a permanent default search engine is counterproductive to the feature's previous nature. this was supposed to be there so i can quickly change between websites i'm searching, now it's been equated to the search feature in the address bar (which i am now also unable to change the function of on the fly, as changing the search engine used would also change the address bar's search function - perhaps influenced this change?). it's now faster for me to type the website i want followed by my terms into the address bar, just like when i use chrome. this feature was one of the largest reasons why i preferred firefox over chrome
i would commonly leave my search engine on merriam-webster when writing papers, wikipedia when doing research, etc. and now i have to click which one i want. every time. with every search that isnt default, unless i change my default through the options constantly. this is incredibly tedious. most irritating of all is the inability to use hotkeys to select my search engine, the lack of ctrl+up/down. previously i wouldnt have to use my mouse often at all, which is imperative for laptop users
so yeah, ive put some real thought into this, and i'm very unhappy. this greatly hinders my browsing experience. heard the saying "if its not broken, dont fix it"? ive been using chrome in conjunction with firefox for a few years now, and it's been painful to see mozilla attempt to imitate it. i will be using chrome more often in the absence of this feature (i am right now, even). i'm also upset that i was unable to find a public message boards hosted by mozilla to voice my opinion, and i apologize to whoever customer support employee that (probably didnt) read this - please pass it on to the devs and tell them internet people are angry and said they fucked up. thanks.
and i beg you, please give us the option to revert back to the old interface in future updates, or at least an official extension overriding this awful update. i realize i cant request this really, and yes im upset, yes im sending an angry email - thats because this is something i use often and i am passionate about it
    sincerely,
    pissed

You can use the Tab key to select a search engine on the bottom bar and press Enter to use the search engine to do the search.
In the current Firefox 34 release there is a new "one-off" search bar.
This search bar doesn't show the name of the search engine and a logo.
You can type one letter to make a drop-down list appear where you can see suggestions and see the used search engine and that also has bar at the bottom where you can select other search engines that are enabled via the Search tab in Options/Preferences.
You can use the Tab key to select one of the other available search engines and press the Enter key to search with the selected search engine.
Click the search engine icon and click "Change Search Settings" to open the Search tab in Options/Preferences (positioned between Tabs and Content) to select the default search engine and select which search engines to show in the search bar drop-down list that opens when you start typing search terms.

  • Safari search engine country domain incorrect

I just changed to Lycamobile in US from t-mobile and now the search goes to google.co.uk on 3G and on WiFi it goes to .com domain. how to set the .com domain as default. This happens to yahoo search engine also. it goes to UK search engine. I am in US. This did not happen when I was using T-mobile SIM.
How to ensure that always it goes to .COM domain whether in WiFi or 3G connection.

    Solution:
Navigate to the http://www.google.com/ncr and it's done.
The ncr in "http://www.google.com/ncr" stands for No Country Redirect and it maps you to the .com domain directly, what is good about it is that you have to visit it just one to be redirected everytime to the .com domain, without having to enter ncr each time.
so just go here once http://www.google.com/ncr and your trouble are gone!

  • Why does firefox have yahoo by default as search engine?? It is very frustrating as I have tried everything but I am stuck with yahoo. i am sure explorer does not have to pay yahoo for ssuch such chep stunts. So what is the way out???

The previous versions of firefox had google by default, which was the best. But now it seems firefox needs money very badly so it has tied up with yahoo to have it as default search engine.
I have tried everything all that the volunteers have suggested but nothing works.
So what to do?? Dump firefox and go back to explorer??? Or can this be fixed????

    Fix it easily.
    follow the steps here:

  • Safari Search Engine

So I noticed that Safari got better with the latest upgrades. I have very few complaints...Most I can live with but one I have a problem with.
Search engines allowed are only Google, Yahoo, Bing and DuckDuck. I'd like to add an engine of my choosing too. Is there a chance Apple will consider this with next update.

You can submit a feedback to Apple.

hello vijayabhaskarv, that sounds as if you're using the pdf viewer built into firefox per default, which might not work in all situations. please see the following article in order to select a different plugin to render pdf files: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]]
