Changing default spell check

I looked around and probably missed the obvious, but, the type ahead when sending messages, is there a way to change that to Canadian English?

The dictionary used is controlled by the keyboard selected. There is no Canadian English choice, but I suspect that the English (UK) choice will give you what you want. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboard > Add New Keyboard and select English (UK). Now you will have both dictionaries available. If you have no need for the English keyboard, you can use the edit button on the page listing your selected keyboards to delete it.

  • I can't change the spell check to UK English

On a Mac with an existing CS6 InDesign document, I have tried everything to change the spell check to use a UK language, e.g., I want "programme", not "program".
    1. Before I open the document, I have selected InDesign/Preferences/Dictionary and changed to English: UK language.
    2. Once the document is opened:
      - I have changed all the paragraph styles (Advanced Character Formats) to English: UK language;
      - I have no Character Styles so nothing to change there;
      - I have gone to Edit/Spelling/User Dictionary and changed language to English: UK.
When I open Edit/Spelling/Check Spelling, the language is set to English: UK. But when I start to spell check, it doesn't pick up any of the words that I know need changing for UK English (i.e., programme, not program)!
Help! What else can I do?

The Australian dictionary is just the British Dictionary renamed, it doesn't recognise any Aussie words that aren't included in the British version.
Don't know why Apple even bothered except to pat us on the head and pretend they cared.
Languages btw are applied like any other style like bold or color or font. You select the text you want to be something and apply the Language.

  • Is it possible to change the spell check dictionary in "pages for iPad" from Spanish to UK English?  The app was downloaded in Spain.

Is it possible to change the spell check dictionary in “pages for iPad” from Spanish to UK English?  The app was purchased in Spain and I am living in spain temporarily

Spell checking should be based on the keyboard layout that you've got selected in Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards - if you have an English 'UK keyboard' selected then the spell checking should be English

  • How do you change the Spell Check language

I have a question, how do you change the spell check language so that it spell checks in a different language... such as French?

Here is a copy of an e-mail that I sent to Yvan asking about this (translated from French):
    +Hello Yvan,+
+I saw your answer SirCram's message (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7526551&#7526551) in which you showed a dialogue box called "text"+
+Sadly, I have only recently started using a Mac (and I am therefore unfamiliar with Pages) so I find no way to open said box.+
+Could you please make me a list of instructions or show me an Apple Support page that would assist this recent Mac convert in learning this simple action?+
    +Thank-you in advance,+

  • Default spell check language is being stubborn

Pages '09 insists on using Spanish as the default spell check language.
I checked System Preferences -> International -> Language and English was the language listed at the top of the list. For good measure I deleted the other languages as I don't speak any of them.
I have rebooted, my default language continues to be English. However whenever I spell check a new document it defaults to Spanish. I have to manually set it back to English.
    Why would this be happening?

When you open a clean unaltered blank *Word Processing mode* template and type something into it, what language is it checking there?
Have you checked when clicked in the blank template:
    +Inspector > Text > More > Language > what language is selected?+
You are not mistaking the Ipsum Facto latin placeholder text for Spanish by any chance?

  • Disable default Spell-Check (Spotlight, Stickies...)

I know where the "Spelling and Grammar" menus are, and how to uncheck their "Check Spelling While Typing" default options.
Anyway, even after I use them with the Spell-checker disabled, Spell-Check is back, re-enabled by default as soon as I close the app or I logout-login.
What I would like to set is NO spelling-check by default, especially in two places I use a lot:
Spotlight Comments (in a Get Info window)
    and
    Stickies.
    Thanks in advance!

I was looking to change this for textedit, but I found that it's in the preferences (duh!).
    Don't know about Spotlight.
    Hope this helps!

  • Can't Change Language (Spell Check)

    hello,
I can't change the language of Mail's spell check funktion by choosing "Edit/Spelling/Spelling..." from the Mail menu... it's greyed-out!!
In TextEdit this works just fine.
Does anybody know what to do?
    Thanks,
    tom

    Tom,
whether or not this menu item is enabled might depend on the current context - try openeing a new empty message and position the cursor inside the message text.

  • Global way to change spell check language in FM10?

    Hi, all,
I'm learning FM 10 and trying to figure out if there's a way to change the spell-check language for an entire document or book at once (from English to Spanish, for instance) rather than going through the paragraph designer for each paragraph tag catergory.
    Thanks,
    Casey B

    Casey,
You can do this through the Paragraph Designer:
    1. In the Paragraph Designer go to the Fonts tab.
    2. Press Shift+F8 to set everything to "As Is".
    3. Set the Language option to what you want.
    4. Click on the Commands button in the lower left and select "Global Update Opttions"
    5.  Select "Default Font Properties Only" in the" Use Properties in the Paragraph Designer" option at the top,
    6. Select "All Paragraphs and Catalog Entries" in the "Update Paragraph Formats" in the bottom half of the panel.
    7. Click on the "Update" button to change all the language settings.
It's best to do this in a template and then import the revised tempalte to all of the documents that require the updated language.
Note: this technique can globally change any paragraph property for all tags. It also works the same way for Charcter tags.

  • Quick change of language for spell check

Hi everyone, I am a translator and use three languages on my MacBook Air and swap from one to another 100+ times a day. It's a bit annoying to change the spell check using right click, going to the grammar section, searching for the language... Is there a faster way to do it? Any shortcut? Or maybe I can create one. I cannot find this information and I'd appreciate any help.

Nothing you can do in Safari as far as I know.
In Pages 4 you can tag any section of text by language using Character Styles activated by keyboard shortcut.  Pages 5 is useless (unless you are writing in Arabic/Hebrew).
Aside from Pages 4 you should use Word or LibreOffice where I am pretty sure you can also easily tag text by language.  For Word questions you need to go to

  • Language packs seem to break spell-check language selection

I suspect this is a bug, but maybe I am doing something wrong, so I'll ask here before submitting a bug report.
I have Thunderbird 31.2.0 installed on OS X Mavericks. I am pretty sure it is the en-GB version, but I have several language packs installed, including the (presumably redundant) en-GB pack. I also have installed (and sometimes uninstalled) the add-ons "Quick Locale Switcher" and "Simple Locale Switcher" at various times to switch the user interface language. (The reason I have included the two is, I had the "Quick" switcher first, and suspected what I was seeing might be a bug in the add-on, so I switched to the other.)
Now, the symptom. When the user interface language is set as en-GB, the spell-checker language choice in the "Preferences" menu (I guess "Options" in Windows, and I don't know what in Linux) is respected - I can type an email in one language, stop, switch the spell-checker language half way through, and the real-time spell-checking is then by the new language exactly as I would have expected. But, when the user interface language is anything other than en-GB (I haven't tried en-US, but I have tried German and Russian), the spell-check language follows the user interface language, and changing the spell-check language option in the "Preferences" menu has no effect whatsoever on anything.
This problem persisted even after I removed the two language-switching add-ons. Then, I removed all the language packs (which forced my user interface back into en-GB), and magically the spell-check language selection started working again.
So I am thinking the problem is driven by the user interface being from a language pack. When the user interface language matches the original install language, the spell-check language selection works; when the user interface language is something else, the spell-check language selection is ignored, and the actual spell-check language follows the user interface language.
The "Simple Locale Switcher" does not seem to allow the user interface language and the spell-check language to be switched independently, but "Quick Locale Switcher" does. However, this feature doesn't seem to work, nor does switching the spell-check language through the Thunderbird Preferences rather than the add-on (unless the user interface language is the default en-GB).
Has any one else seen a problem like this? Is there a way to fix it? (Maybe futz with the language settings on the other side of the "Here Be Dragons" warning?)

Before chasing dragons, right click in the body of a mail in the compose window and set the spell check language there. I have no idea if it will work, but it might add to the over all body of knowledge for a bug report.
Please post a link to any bug report you make.

  • The Firefox spell checker has the option for me to add custom words to the dicionary. Please tell me how to delete a word from this file of custom words because a mispelled word got in there by mistake.

I want to know how to delete words from the custom dictionary in the spell checker that I put there by mistake.

In your profile directory, the file is '''persdict.dat''' and you should know how to get to your profile. One way is to enter '''about:support''' in the location bar then click on "Open Containing Folder". Or go through the Help menu > Troubleshooting Information > ...
You can edit with wordpad, or notepad++, but not with notepad,
because there is one word per line and you will not see that in notepad after Firefox has updated it.  Update after closing Firefox.
I will have to change my Spell Check documentation to not suggest notepad

  • Set spell check language to British once and for all...

I know this question has been asked a few times before but I just cannot fix it on my iMac or MBP. I am running Snow Leopard (still too scared to upgrade to Lion) and want to globally change my spell-check to British.
I have tried everything. Every option in the System Preferences where I can change the language to British I have done and also changed the preferences in each application by right-clicking the underlined text, selecting 'spelling and gramma' and setting the dropdown to British English. All to no avail. As soon as I go back to TextEdit or something and type 'colour' it's telling me to change it to 'color'. Infuriating!
Does anyone have any clue? The irony is that I managed to make it work as I wanted (no American spellings) on my old MacBook running Snow Leopard but just can't on my newer computers.
    Many thanks

  • Outlook Express spell check language?

After not using OutlookEexp. for a while, I now find that the language in spell check if French? How do I change to English ? TY

    Satellite P35-S6053
    ..has office 2007
Somehow someone??? changed the spell check langauge to french ?
Nobody did it. Office 2007 is the culprit.
Outlook Express has no spell checker of its own. Rather, it uses whatever it can find. When Office 2007 was installed, most of the spell checking files were replaced with versions incompatible with Outlook Express.
You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in Outlook Express 6.0 after you in...
Turns out that French still works.
Downloading a free spell checker is the simplest way around this.
    Vampirefo is a popular solution.
       From Major Geeks
       From SnapFiles
Or you may like tinySpell, which checks the spelling as you type.
If you have a previous version of Office handy, see Office 2007 and OE Spell Check.
