Changing Desktop Pictures

I selected a folder full of images to use for my desktop pictures. The thumbnails display and I select an image and it shows in the upper left corner of the window, however, it will not change on the desktop. I also tried to select the options for Change picture every 5 minutees and random order, though this does not work either. Is there a button I need to press to activate the new desktops?

You can also use iPhoto to set the desktop picture, if the picture is in iPhoto.
Launch iPhoto and select the picture.
Click on Share and select Set Desktop.
If you have a picture you want to use for the desktop but are having trouble navigating all the pictures through the System Preferences window this is great alternative.

  • Changing desktop picture every 1 second instead of 5

    Hi All,
I'm opening a retail store and we're using 30 inch cinema displays for our menu boards. I'd like to use OS X's built-in "change desktop picture" to display our image, but would like it to change images every 1 second instead of 5.
Is there a way to modify the OS to do this?
    Thanks,
    - Mike

Install either the Developer Tools or download the Server Admin Tools onto your computer; in either case, find and open the Property List Editor, and open the file named com.apple.desktop.plist in your home folder with it. Inside this file, there will be two or more instances of ChangeTime; change the number associated with all instances of this key to 1.

  • Can't change Desktop Picture

    Hey.
I'm having difficulties changing desktop pictures after I reinstalled OS X. Somehow it's stuck at the one I set before I reinstalled (using the archive & install option). I ran my periodics and repaired permissions, but it still won't work. What's wrong?
    Thanks.

  • Changing desktop pictures locks system preferences

Re MacBook Pro laptop (OS 10.7.5)
Problem: Changing desktop pictures locks System Preferences
If I try to open System Preferences, I get windows for the Change Desktop/Background and the whirling beach ball begins until I go to Activities Monitor to Force Quit System Preferences, which informs me that my "System Preferences is no longer responding."
I have no trouble booting my Mac,
checked my Disk Utility informing me that there are no errors,
    checked Permissions without errors,
went to Users>"my name">Preferences>found the plist for com.apple.systempreferences, moved it to my desktop, tried the Apple System Preferences option with same result. Returned plist .  Hmm, just noticed that I have com.apple.systempreferences with one directly after Library ( i.e., not in any folder), and the other in the Library>Preferences folder. Could that be the foul up?  Perhaps one of these plists is misplaced.
    Any suggestions?

First follow the instructions in this support article.
If an iPhoto or Aperture library is the source of your desktop pictures, it may need to be rebuilt, or you may need to update the application to the latest version.
    Otherwise, continue as below.
    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
              Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following items to the Desktop, if they exist:
              Application Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db
              Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the items you moved to the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

    Hello, sounds like maybe this...
OS X: System Preferences stops responding after viewing Desktop & Screen Saver pane
    Products Affected
OS X Lion, OS X Mountain Lion, iPhoto
    Symptoms
System Preferences may stop responding if you select an iPhoto Event that is no longer available in iPhoto as the source for your desktop picture.
    Resolution
        1.    Quit System Preferences if it's running.

If System Preferences is running but not responding, choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, or right-click its icon on the Dock and choose "Force Quit".
        2.    Open iPhoto.
        3.    Select Events in the Source list (on the left side of the iPhoto window).
        4.    Double-click on any of the events shown. Verify that the name or date of this event is now shown under RECENT in the Source list.
        5.    Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences.
        6.    Click Desktop & Screen Saver, click on Desktop, and verify that you can now select a new desktop picture.

  • Change Desktop picture every 5 seconds?

What is the opinion of the learned on setting the desktop picture in "Desktop and Screensaver" System Prefs to change the picture every 5 seconds? Is this a bad idea, and if so why? I cannot find anything from Apple that discourages doing it and obviously they make it available for the user to set the Pref such that you can do it. TIA

I suppose, but it does not decrease the performance that I can tell. I am sure it would if I were to measure it. That System Preference is stock with that computer (Panther 10.3.9).

  • IPhoto pictures does not show up when trying to change desktop pictures

When I got my new MBP I used a Time Machine back up to restore my system. This has worked great, though so far there is one little issue:
When I right click my desktop and choose "Change background picture" my iPhoto images doesn't show up in the menu like they used to.
Has anyone got any idea about how to get them back in there? Do I somehow have to "let Leopard know" that I have an iPhoto library that I would like to be able to choose from?
    Thanks!

    HI Rune,
That is most likely a shared library issue. The Finder is trying to access your iPhoto library without iPhoto being open. Sometimes when libraries are shared, they can become corrupt.
Go here and read about shared library issues.

The easiest way to fix this is to back up your important data and do an Archive and Install which restores your system software. It does NOT erase the drive, you do not have to reinstall any Apple pre-installed software, ie., iLife applications.
Go here and read the instructions for archive and install.

  • Changing desktop picture for managed account

I would like to change the desktop picture in my daughter's managed account.
    I am using 10.5
In a standard account, one opens the system preferences and goes to the 'desktop and screen saver' and in the 'desktop' part the picture can be set.
However, for a managed account, there is no system preferences available. Even in the full finder is run there is no access to any of the system preferences.
I have tried logging in to the administrator account and setting the picture from there but there does not seem to be any option to do this.
    Help please.
    Andrew

    Hi,
You don't see the System Preferences in a managed account because "System Preferences" is an application and by default it is not included in the managed account.
To allow System Preferences in a managed account, select the account in System Preferences (when you are in an administrator account), click the "Parental Control" button, under "System" tab, choose "System Preferences" where it allows you choose applications.

  • Can't change desktop picture in System Preferences or iPhoto

For the last two days, I've been unable to change my desktop picture in System Preferences or iPhoto. When I select a picture (Apple's or one of my own) in the Desktop pane of System Preferences, it won't put the picture on my desktop. I tried the same thing in iPhoto with the same results. I installed Google Earth a few days ago; I thought it might be causing the problem so I erased it from my computer. Could it have left anything on my computer that would cause this problem? (sorry if the answer to this is obvious; I'm a newbie). I also just installed the latest version of Tiger; could this be the cause? Has anybody else had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Never mind, I fixed the problem. I was reseting the Help Viewer and had to restart my computer. I was able to change the desktop pic after that.

  • Changing desktop picture

I'm trying to change my desktop picture on my macbook, and whenever i go into the particular tab in system preferences, it freezes. i can change my screen saver, i can adjust anything else in system preferences, it is just the desktop tab. i just changed the picture to something else about 10 minutes ago, could it possibly be a corrupt file and cause this to happen? is there any other way to change a desktop picture without going into that tab? has this ever happened to anyone before?

Have you tried running repair permissions from Disk Utility?

  • Cannot Change Desktop Picture Anymore

    Hi -
Problem is described in the Header. And goes for ALL accounts incl. ROOT Account.
Scenario: I open Sys Pref. Go to Desktop/ScreenSaver - it opens fine and I can click the images. They will even show in the little preview window in the top. The only thing NOT changing is the Actual Desktop. It remains Solid Blue.
Tried deleting Finder, desktop, .globalpref( in both pref folders) - Preferences
    Any Ideas ?

    HELP!
    Have you done your homework?
Run DU, check/repair HD and permissions.
If that does not work, move following .plists to desktop; let system create new plists
    try this one first:
    com.apple.desktop.plist
reboot and see if this fixes it.
if not then move this one to desktop and repeat
    com.apple.desktopscreensaver.rsspictures.plist
    report back here with results.

  • Change desktop picture automatically doesn't work

    Hi
I am trying to use the System Preferences Destop Picture "Change Picture automatically" every day feature. I want it to select a picture automatically at random every day from the folder I set. This does not seem to work. If I set it to "every day", it seems to just always pick the same photo--it never changes it. I tried yesterday setting it to "every login", since I login every day, and now no photos show up.
The Console has a whole bunch of the message :
    2006-09-10 14:46:22.741 SyndicationAgent[284] WARNING: BestCalendarDateFromString - can't interpret: 'Sat 09 Sep 2006 13:53:23 -800'
Could that be part of the problem? Anyone else have trouble with this feature?
I am using two screens, and trying to set the picture on each from a different folder. Maybe that is the problem?
    Thanks
    Bob

I have two monitors and it works fine. It is possible that there is something wrong with the preference files, so the system is unable to correctly read them. Try removing these two files:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist"
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist"
Then redo your settings, log out and back in and see if it works. If it does you can toss the old plists. You'll probably have to redo some other settings in System Preferences to put them the way you prefer.

  • Automatically change Desktop picture.

Hi, time ago, not sure if with Panther or in older versions of Tiger or iPhoto...
I remember there was a way to set in System Preferences>Desktop to navigate to particular folders within the iPhoto folders and make the pictures there to show randomly on the Desktop.
I think it was with a newer version of iPhoto that that was unavailable. How do I still do that?
    Thks.

I forgot to mention that I have iPhoto 6.x, for what it's worth.
The Desktop & Screen Saver preferences don't offer a way to select (according to me) a specific iPhoto album for the pictures within to be selected randomly. You do can select an album first and then you can select pictures individually but with no option to change them randomly.
When it comes to folders and not albums, in the Desktop & Screen Saver preferences if, like you said, you choose "Choose Folder..." on the left hand side, a finder-like window drops down for you to select the folder. The problem here is that I have no real folder with the pictures. I only have the albums in iPhoto and I would like to stay that way so I only need to add photos to the album and nowhere else.
It is here where I remember things were different with older versions of either the OS or rather iPhoto. Older versions of iPhoto used to create folders for every album and alias files for every picture. I used to select those folders in the preferences and the pictures inside to be randomly changed.
I hope to have made myself clear now and also hope to be helped with a rather simple solution.
    Cheers.

  • Cannot change Desktop picture

My new 15" MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 will not allow me to choose my own Photo as Desktop. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks!

Is it not choosing the sole picture or not changing the desktop image at all?
If it's not choosing that one picture, I would say the picture has the problem.
If it's not changing the dekstop picture at all, then it's likely a corrupt preference file.
