Changing Duration of Photos (not clips)

I use iMovie to create some pretty incredible slide shows. No video clips, just photos. When I try to match the transition between slides to the beat of the audio, I have to adjust the duration of the slides to do so. Many times when I adjust the duration to a specific time (ie, 2 seconds), after hitting "done", the duration is much less than what I specified. Is there any way to get iMovie to accept exactly what I specify for the duration of the slide and/or the transition?

The easiest way to land exactly on the beat is to use no transitions.
When you use a transition, it shortens the slide to make room for the transition.
Also there is a new way to do this in iMovie 09.
Go to iMovie 09 Help and search on "beat".
You will find a help topic called "synchronizing video or photo to music" which explains this in more detail than I can go into here.

  • Setting Duration of Photos (still clips) in iMovie '11 Does Not Work

    Howdy -
I realize there are already similar posts to this one, but so far as I could tell, most of them involve (& focus on) transitions, whereas my issue is strictly with setting the duration for which a photo is held in iMovie.
Effectively, I am trying to get a 'stop motion' feel from iMovie. I deselected the auto-apply 'Ken Burns' to all photo imports in the project preferences and figured I would edit the photo duration afterwards, given that the shortest possible duration in the project preferences is 1s, which is much too long. That is where I run into trouble: the "duration" field is acting up a great deal - sometimes it won't even respond to my entering different numbers, other times it will. Sometimes when it does respond to my typing numbers, it won't let me type anything in the decimal position. When it does let me type something in the decimal position, e.g. 0.2s, when I hit enter, it re-sets the time to 2.0s. I've tried different formats for entering time (0:00:2; 0:00:02; 0,2; with & w/out 's' etc) - all to no avail.
I'm very curious to know if anyone else has reported this problem, & if so what the solution is.
In case anyone else is having this problem, I did find a workaround:
         1. Import your photos as necessary
         2. Select one photo and manually crop to desired time scale (e.g. 0.3s)
         3. "Trim to selection"
         4. Select that same clip & bring up the window for editing the duration, check the "apply to all stills" box.
         5. voila - amazingly this works.
Although this is a perfectly easy workaround, I'm a little disconcerted by the fact that iMovie won't repond properly & would be very interested to understand why.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Kind regards,
    Rax.

    Hi Rax,
This may not help, but in iMovie Preferences there is an option to display time down to the frame level. So, rather than entering time as a decimal, you enter each time component separated by a colon. So, 2.5 seconds would be entered as 2:15 - that's 2 seconds and 15 frames (for NTSC or 30 fps formatted video).
    See this screenshot:
As I mentioned, this may not help. At times I've also had trouble adjusting the duration of stills, even though I have my preferences set to display time at the frame level. Transitions can cause issues with stills duration. In most cases, a transition can be no longer than half the duration of the shortest clip on either side.
Notwithstanding the transition methodology, my feeling is that there is a bug in iMovie that causes problems with stills duration in certain circumstances. This applies to both iMovie '09 and iMovie '11 (also possibly '08).

  • Quickest way to change speed but not clip duration

I'm trying to determine the fastest method for changing the speed
of a clip already in the timeline, but not the clips duration. Primarily, slowing a clip down.
The best I've come up with so far is to put the timeline playhead over the
clip and hit X to get the clips IN and OUT points placed in the timeline. Then,
drag the clip into the Browser, effectively making a copy of it there. Then bring the clip into the Viewer, then hit APPLE J to bring up the speed change window, affect the change, then overwrite the change you've made in the viewer back down into the timeline where you placed the original IN and OUTS. Seems like alot of step.
Is there a faster way? Any change I try to make in the timeline itself results
in a clip duration change. The only other way I've found it to use the time remap tool put that is even more complicated and is alot less exact when trying to make something, say, 50% slower.
    Any input would be appreciated.

Another, close but not quite there method I've tried is the TIME REMAP tool
that lives with the SLIP AND SLIDE.
I can affect speed changes, and see what percentage speed change I'm
trying to make, but it wants to change speed on both the left and right side
of the clip. In other words, I can't place the timeline playhead or Time remap tool at the beginning or end of the clip and only effect the speed of the entire
clip unless there is no clip adjacent to the clip I'm trying to change.
Otherwise it changes the speed as I want for 99% of the clip and then during
the last several frames I've accidentally sped up up those frames. I can't position it to just change the speed for the entire clip.

  • How to change duration of selected still image Clips?

iMove is great in all its simplicity. However coming from the Windows (Pinnacle Studio) side I have yet a few mysteries to solve: Changing duration of a single still image clip is trivial, but it seems impossible to do the same operation selecting two or more clips. Did I miss anything? You can specify the duration and apply to all clips, but I have found no way to apply e.g. 4 sec duration to half of the 220 slides in my slideshow. Cmd+R on 100 still images seems like a fairly unintelligent approach. Hints, anyone?

    Hi
    Anybody?
    I'm having the same problem.
I have 500 stills in my timeline (iMovie 06 HD) and there seems to be no way to change the duration of more than one still at a time.
This cannot be right. Please tell me what I am missing!
According to another thread about this issue, the answer was that after I select my group of stills in the timeline, I should be able to open "Media" and "Photos" in iMovie, and then set the stills duration settings that way.
But the button "Show Photo Settings" is greyed out, so I am unable to set the group stills duration.
    Any help?
    PLEASE?

  • Change duration of multiple clips "as one" overall clip?

    Here's my situation:
I have a song at 127 BPM. I have a music video (muted sound) at 125 BPM.
I've spent a long time slicing up clips from the video into different channels and muliple clips to form one timeline (but with many clips and channels lined up).
I now want to change the overall duration of the video clip to match the BPM of the song (which I should have done in the first place), but the video is, as previously stated, sliced up in mulitple clips in multiple channels. How can I change the duration of all clips at one time, where the end and start of the clips still line up to eachother?
This would've been incredibly easy if there were a un-nesting feature. Where I can nest multiple clips, change the duration, and un-nest the clips to slices clips with a changed overall duration. (Which is not possible. Yes, I can drag the clips out of the nested clip, but the clips will still have the original duration).
TL;DR: How can I change duration of multiple clips "as one" overall clip?

Never mind. I've found a alternate solution. I used a time stretch calculator at http://mp3.deepsound.net/eng/samples_calculs.php and time stretched all the clips to match the BPM of the song. Now I only need to snap all the clips, which can be done one by one, but I found this trick to snap all the clips at once: http://vimeo.com/27428526.
I'll just let this thread stay open so other with the same problem can find this

  • Where to change duration multiple selected clips

In previous answers I've read if you have selected all clips (Cmnd A) and you want to change duration of all still images you press
Ctrl D (change duration) but WHERE on the screen do you change it. If I move the playhead it looses its Ctrl D command. I cannot change the seconds in the timer on the timeline either...? Thanks, Pim

I'm sorry Tom, what is the dashboard. Is it in the middle of the screen above the timeline, with the green numbers (hrs:minutes:seconds:frames). If I do what you suggest these numbers turn out blue (next to the blue numbers the sign of a clip with handlels pop up) but when I try to enter the numner there, or in tne Info screen on the upper right sight where its says Duration, I cannot enter any number. It unselects...?
Nor in the Timeline a cannot drag one of the sides of one of the selected clips (images).
So I got stuck after Cmnd-A (select all images), Ctrl-D...

Error -69 suggests a possible problem with the source files on your computer. Check the source disk for errors and backup if you don't already do so. See HT1210: iTunes displays a -69 error when syncing iPod for more details.
The SyncToy backup program is also a good way to identify exactly which files cannot be read. Repeated runs may succed in copying files which won't copy over on the first attempt.
    See also Corrupt iPod classic.
It may also help to disable any AV software while syncing or set exclusions on the media folder and the iPod's drive.

  • Changing duration after applying motion properties?

I have a series of still images that I applied scaling and motion to and I now want to change their duration so I right-click, choose Speed/Duration and change the timecode for the duration to make the still image take less time on screen. After doing this the scaling and motion no longer work. Is there a way to change still image duration after applying scaling and motion to them?
    Thanks.

Looking for some answers (Oh I realise this thread is 1 year old!) about clips duration I bumped into this one. I wonder if part of the above problem had something to do with pictures coming from different cameras - I seemed to notice that with the same preference choice some clips seem to interpret the duration differently? Probably when the aspect ratio is different from one camera to another, or if one has changed his or her aspect ratio on that camera in a shooting session.
I do remember that to change the duration default via preference it has to be done before importing photos in the project windows or has someone pointed out, re import them after changing the default.,
I also thought after changing the duration of clips that had key frame for various functions, the new duration may have excluded those key frames because the shortening had truncated the part where the end key frames were,  thus making them void.
(I'm a little surprised to be in this thread as I had written in the "question" field "still images duration" and was in another thread with 5 entries, the last one from Anne Benz with a shot of a time line, also from Oct 2012! But some how when I tried to add to it, I could not and found for unknown reason I was not signed on! But now I come back signed on with the same question I'm in the different thread?)
Perhaps the following may be interesting and helpful for some. Changing duration of still in the time line can be quite useful when one needs to match the Video sequence with its added Audio.   As you have a display of stills with transitions, animation etc. and you add some music to it. If they don't quite finish at the desire point. (usually with the end of the music, song). You can fine tune it (like within a few seconds) by shortening or lengthening the clip, clips duration. And if it's ok with what  you have you can select the whole (video)  time line  and after deciding how much is the difference between your portion of music and your clips apply that time. Sometimes using only a few clips is enough other times the whole of it works better.  I find it's ok only for a few seconds though as there are a couple of problem with this, The key frames may need to be readjusted and or even be out of action (as explained earlier) In that case it's probably better to have the video clips on a sequence of their own then add the music on a new sequence and match them this way on the same time line.
PS: Titles and anything relying in proper timing placement above this video display timeline needs to be checked, perhaps included or adjusted with clip or clips duration change.
I really was looking at ways of creating a sequence with a variety of animations that I could re used for other project with the "Copy" then "Paste Attributes" in the hope it would be quicker than going back to the "Contor Effect" function all the time. I remember using (MS Movie Maker) and it had a few icons for this purpose that one would apply for a clip. It was rigid but quite effective. This way even if I needed to adjust the key frames, they would already be in place. (I already use this technic with similar pics, I copy one animation I like and "paste attributes to  a bunch of pics, sometimes reverse the key frames, "copy" then select alternate pics from the previous selection and paste the new attributes to them... May be not everyone's taste!
So if I could import such a sequence in my Projects and place it on Video 2  with each pic. labelled with its appropriate animation and obviously key-framed accordingly. (I would have created a photo folder and renamed each of its photos with one of the desired labels, ie Pan down, Pan left, Zoom in, Rotate %,  etc) - But I thought I hit a snag with the duration....
I have actually gave this a quick try and it seems to have some value. I just found out that it's worthwhile to get the shortest but meaningful labeling for this "templates" in order to identify them easily in their smallest view (time line zoomed out) ie Pan Left  = PL, PR, PU, Zi, Zo etc.

I try to open iphoto and it comes up with You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. I have downloaded photo manager and it's telling me to update but it wont update...

iPhoto is Apple's included program to manage your photo's and pictures.
It receives updates over time with Software updates and new machine or iLife purchases.
When iPhoto gets updated or a newer version is used, it may alter iPhoto support files, but newer iPhoto versions usually always compatible with older files which it then updates.
If you used a newer iPhoto on your iPhoto support files, then they got altered to the newer format, older iPhoto versions can't read the older format.
Somewhere along the line you somehow got a older version of iPhoto on your computer, you need to fine the newer version of iPhoto (not this photo manager, sounds like another program)
Or somewhere along the line you used a newer iPhoto version (like on another Mac) and it altered the iPhoto support files on your older version of iPhoto.
So the key here is to find the newest version of iPhoto and use that to access your iPhoto support files.
If you didn't access your iPhoto support files from another Mac, then you should have the newer iPhoto version on your computer.
Once you find it, and get it in the Dock, you should remove the older iPhoto version from your computer to prevent this from happening again.
Lastly, if the newer version of iPhoto is somehow gone off your computer, you should be able to get a copy off the latest OS X install disk or iLife using a free program called Pacifist.
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
Then you need to check for updates for iPhoto in the program itself, the current version is 9.1.2

  • How do I change the cover photo of an album in the Photos App?

    Hi,
in iPhoto you can change the cover art of an album or journal (but apparently not of a shared photo stream?!).
But how do I change the cover photo of a shared photo stream I created in the iOS 6 Photos app? It seems to be the first photo in that stream but I want to use another photo as the cover / key photo of that shared stream. Is it possible at all?
    Thanks,
    Stefan.

Which iPhoto are you referring to?  iPhoto on your mobile device or iPhoto on your Mac?  If on your Mac you'll need to change the date of the photos in the Event via the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Date menu option:
This will change the date of all selected photos in the Event and thus change the date range of the Event.
Or you can use the Photos ➙ Adjust Date & Time menu option and change just one or two photos which can also change the date range of the Event.

  • Photo not showing up in Kens window.

    Hello,
I have been working in Imovie with pictures and video.
I am almost done. I went back to do some tweaking,
(change times on pictures, trans) Now some of the pictures
I need to change time on do not show up in the box. Its black. I am confused because these picture showed up before??
    txs

    hello kelly,
have you applied some effects to the pictures once you had them in the timeline? if so the following has happened:
in order to apply the effect, iMovie transforms the picture into video, i. e. afterwards it is not treated as a picture anymore and can't be changed by KB effect anymore.
if that is the case, you could try to delete the effect you have applied to the picture (select it and hit delete key). dont worry this will not delete the whole clip but just the "layer on top" - if you have applied two or more effects you will have to delete them all.
now you should be able to update the settings of your picture and then - unfortunately - you have to apply the effects again.
oh yeah, i forgot: any transitions will have to go as well ......
hope it helps & viva la mela

When opening the version of Iphoto i have an error message appears that says; You can't open your current iphoto library using this version of Iphoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iphoto. What? If I can't open the current library using the latest version of iphoto, and I am asked to make changes the the newest version!!! I'm asked to run in circles chasing my tail...I had a new hard drive installed about 6 weeks ago. I am running MAC OS 10.5.8

What version of iPhoto do you have? If you're on 10.5 then you're not running the latest iPhoto
Any chance that the library was opened with another version?
Simplest solution will be to just restore from your back up.

  • You can't open photo library using this version of iphoto. you have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto. please quit and use the latest version of iphoto

you can't open photo library using this version of iphoto. you have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto. please quit and use latest version of iphoto. iphoto 11 is installed.

This is a message you got?
If so, as your post isn't clear, it may be a bogus message caused by a corrupt database.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Opening iphoto I get an error message that says "you can't open your current photo library using this version of iphoto.  You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto.  Please quit and use the latest version of iphoto."  I wouldn't have a clue as to how to change to a new version of iphoto even if I wanted to.

If you don't have a backup you can resort to give this a try:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
