Changing external hardrive permissions.

i recently had to erase my harddrive and restore from a time machine back up. however, once mountain lion was reinstalled i did not restore right away and instead created a new user account on my harddrive. let's call this account "p". i then i used migration assistant to restore to my original system, account "x". my computer now has both accounts on it and my external harddrive is now linked to account "p". when i am using account "x" everything on my external is listed as "read only". if i use account "p", the account that i don't want to use, that has none of my applications on it, and created by mistake, everything is "read & write". how can i fix this?! thank you!

When logged in as x, select the external drive, choose Get Info from the FIle menu, and either give yourself write access to the drive or set it to ignore ownership.

  • Problems with permissions when backing up to external hardrive

I have two external hardrives. One I use for time machine, and the other I just copy and paste my computer's hardrive. I like to have a couple back up locations.
The problem: Lately when I try the copy and paste operation it gets started then inevitable halts with the message, "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access "Keychain Access.app".
I've run "repair disk permissions" and erased everything on the external before starting. Same problem. Any ideas?
BTW, the Time Machine backup to my G-drive has not experienced this problem.

You need to use dedicated cloning software such as Carbon Copy Cloner and not just copy/paste.

  • External hardrive error

I just came home to mix a little and ran into a new problem.
    I'm using a Macbook Pro
    Digi 002
    Mybook External hardrive
When I went to open some sessions on my hardrive (same hardrive I've been using for a few months) I get this message,
"This session is saved on a volume set to TRANSFER only. If permitted, set the volumes in question to "P" (playback) or "R" (record) in the Workspace.
Otherwise, choose OK to save a copy of this session and its media to a valid playback volume. The session copy will automaically open from the chosen location."
Please help, I don't understand how i get this error all of a sudden.
How do I change teh workspace to record?
    Thanks,
    Edson

Click on the icon of the mounted drive.
Request the info (-i) check the "ownership and permissions" in the bottom of the info panel that pops up.
Sounds like that is set to "read only".

  • My 1TB Toshiba External Hardrive no longer works on my MacBook Air

I got a 1TB Toshiba External Hardrive and had no problems with it and added some pictures and everything to it however no it no longer works, or even shows up in the devices when i plug it in. I Saw that some others had the same problem and can't even find where they suggested to go to try and change it to read and right.

Not that I can tell. Suspiciously, we did run a salvo of updates from Software Update and the problems started immediately after, but none of those appeared to be directly related to Airport functionality (firmware or otherwise). Just to be sure, I took the "safe" steps of repairing permissions, re-downloading the last combo update & re-applying it. I also searched for any firmware updates related to Airport. What's odd to me is that the firmware reported on her machine is different than that on mine. They're both Late 2006 Macbook models, so that strikes me as odd (but maybe it isn't). I wasn't able to find any updates that her Macbook was lacking, however.
My (working) firmware is: [type] AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87), [version] 1.4.8.0
Her (not-working) firmware is: [type] AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87), [version] 1.4.4
Based on the card type, it doesn't appear that they're different chipsets, so I'm not at all clear on why the firmware versions differ. Was there a firmware update for Leopard that wasn't available/needed for Tiger?
Also, I know for sure that there were no firmware updates performed during the last set of updates ... that's a more involved process, if I recall, not handled through the standard updater, I think.
    Thanks for the response!

  • Need help setting up external hardrive to play itunes on 2nd Mac

I have my main music collection on my Mac Pro (400 gigs).  I want to be able to use my Mac Mini downstairs to play my itunes collection.  I have attempted the following steps without success:
Using my Mac Pro, I formatted a 2TB Seagate drive into two partitions (one to use as timemachine back up for the Mac Mini) the other to copy my itunes collection to.
I copied my entire itunes folder onto that Seagate hardrive partition which I named :"Mac mini Itunes"
plugged in seagate hardrive to the mac mini
Opened itunes using the hold option button to choose the iTunes library on the external hardrive
When I chose the iTunes folder located in that "mac mini iTunes" hard drive icon on my desktop, I get the following message:
"The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission for this file"
When I go to the Sharing and Permissions info on that "mac mini Itunes" hard drive icon, it shows "You can only read"
Below that I see that the Name and privilege info is grayed out and I can not change anything.
The Ignore ownership on this volume is checked but grayed out and I can not change it.
Any suggestions on how I can use this hardrive to play my iTunes collection on my mac mini?
Do I need to reformat the Seagate drive and do something different while partitioning the drive?
Should I reformat it using the mac mini instead of the Mac Pro and then copy my iTunes folder to it?
    Thanks for any help

Hello blakemj. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For your described network configuration, you will want to reconfigure your 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) as a "wireless client" to the Buffalo wireless router.
    Here's how ...
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
(Note: As a third option, you can temporarily connect the AXn directly to an available LAN port on your Buffalo wireless router during setup, and then, place it at the desired location when complete.)
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing Buffalo's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • External hardrive not workon on MacBook Pro

I own a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex that is 1TB and have had it for about 3 or 4 years. I used to be able to plug it in and with ease insert files (pictures, music, documents, etc .. basically everything in case my MacBook stops functioning.)
Back in May, I took my external hardrive to my University before I graduated and I could not insert some video files (using another computer, which was a Mac.) Our school's tech expert said it was because my external hardrive is not applicable with Macs. Long story short, I showed him I can do it on my MacBook Pro, then I had to save my video files on a flash drive instead. Anyway.
I want to back up everything incase the MacBook stops working soon (it's six years old.) However, when I put in my external hardrive, I can't change the name of files/folders in the external hardrive nor can I insert anything into the hardrive. Oddly enough, I can drag stuff into my desktop and it will copy a file into my desktop while the same file still stays on my hardrive.
My MacBook Pro is Version 10.9.5 (if it matters) and I have more than 90 GB of free space on my MacBook and have nearly 700 GB of free space on my external hardrive and obviously I'd like to use that. Also, I'd like to use my external hardrive not just on Macs, but all machines in case I need to save large files. I used to be able to do this at one point, especially with a previously owned hardrive (it was Western Digital.)
Anyway, that's all the info. All help would be greatly appreciated.

I meant to also say that your school's tech expert does not appear to be much of an expert.

  • I'm having issues syncing my ipod to my external hardrive's library. How do I sync and get the music from my external hard drive?

I recently moved the music from my old computer in itunes to my external hardrive (changed the media file location and consolidated library). I connected my external hardrive to my new computer (windows 7) and changed my itunes media file to my external hardrive and consolidated my new computer's library to my external hardrive. When I connect my iPod, it is only grabbing the music from my new computer and not my external hardrive. How do I get the music from my external hardrive onto my iPod?

Did you move the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder?

That's not how to do it. You don't move stuff then set the iTunes prefs > Advanced.
Once you move the /iTunes/ folder, hold Option, launch iTunes and select Choose library... and select the ITunes folder on the external.
This will use the iTunes library file in the iTunes folder you moved.
Don't change iTunes prefs > Advanced.

  • I can't install my drivers from my external hardrive as windows wont recognise it.. how do i get back to my OS X Lion operating system?

I installed windows 7 on my MacBook Pro 13 inch fine and then when it came to install the bootcamp drivers from my external hardrive windows 7 doesnt recognise it in any way. So im stuck on windows 7 any ideas?

Some people don't even know there is a Set Default OS startup disk control panel as part of System Preferences.
With Lion and no DVD any more there is however a new Lion Recovery Mode and boot partition you want to get familiar with
    Lion Recovery Mode
    Lion Recovery Disk Assistant
Boot Camp 4.0, OS X Lion Frequently asked questions
http://www.apple.com/support/lion - change the last part to most any product name etc to find the support back, like "bootcamp" also.

  • Itunes on my windows 7 laptop an external hardrive

i have been using itunes on my windows 7 laptop with my library on an external hardrive on my XP desktop.  I recently replaced the desktop with a new Windows 7 desktop and plugged in the same external harddrive but itunes only recognizes some of the songs.  The laptop can see them all when looking outside of Itunes, but not sure why itunes does not recognize.  (I did change my preferences to the name of the new computer/externaldrive/directory name.

You should be able to.   ITunes 11 is compatible with Windows 7.

  • Backup Library using external hardrive?!

I understand that I can use a DVD or CD to backup my Library but is there an easier way to back up my library using an external hardrive other than individually moving all 2000 of my mp3s??

If you go into the My Music folder, there will be an iTunes folder. Inside that folder is all of the information for playlists, all of the songs, etc. You can copy and paste that if you want.
If you're looking to run all of the songs in iTunes off of the external HD, go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced, and change the iTunes music folder to a folder on the external HD. Now, go along the top of iTunes and choose Advanced>Consolidate library. That will copy everything to the external HD, and will make iTunes run off of the external HD. I don't usually recommend this option if you're just wanting to back up your content.

  • MacBook & MacBook Pro eject sleeping external hardrive

I recently bought a 1Tb 3.5 inch external hardrive (Sun Bright ME740T caddy & WD Caviar Blue 1Tb) which has a powersave mode. The problem is, every time the external hardrive goes into powersave (stops spinning), both my mac laptops (macBook and macbook pro) think it has been ejected and give me the "The disk was not ejected properly..." warning. If I pull the hardrive cable out and plug it in again, the drive is still asleep and the laptop won't recognise it. So, I have to wait 20 mins or so for the drive to reset itself. The external drive will run happily without being plugged in to the laptop and this has also has not happened on a pc. I have changed power settings on the macbook but this hasn't done anything. Are there any other settings I should be looking at?

This is normal behavior. Windows will disconnect the drives too if you put it into suspend to RAM (the Mac "sleep" state) mode. The difference is that Windows, starting with XP, automatically configures drives for rapid ejection like that. It comes at the cost of some performance however. It's one feature I'm sure a lot of people would like to see Apple implement.
Until then, all you can really do is just eject the drives before putting the system into sleep mode, or just don't let it go into sleep mode unless you close the lid, or explicitly put it into sleep mode.

  • External Hardrive questions (particularly with iPhoto)

I want to keep my external hd organized and I also want to delete some photos from my iPhoto to free up some space on the internal hd. I started to organize but then realized I wasn't sure how it all works. I guess my question is when I back up my computer on an external hd, does it save iPhoto exactly as it is, organized as it is in the iPhoto program? If that is true and I delete photos from my iPhoto library and then back up on the external, all of the photos will still be on my external drive, correct? (unless I delete them manually myself from the external hardrive).
Also, is this all different than backing up via Time Machine?
If someone has answers to these questions, I would love to hear. I'm just trying to figure out the best way of going about this. I would appreciate any knowledge on the subject.
I have a Macbook Pro OS Extended. My external hard rive is a Seagate 1 TB.

It depends on how you're backing up.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
In the first of these cases, then yes, nothing is deleted from the back up.
In the second of these cases, then everything can be kept - if you set the app doing the back up to do so. So, it depends on the app you use and the settings of that app.
    Time Machine
Time Machine keeps a rolling back up with the ability to revert, but this is space limited. So, once you fill the back up drive things will be deleted. SO if you delete something from your Library it will eventually be deleted from the Time Machie back up. How soon? Depends on the size of your back up drive.

  • Using my external hardrive question!

Ok, so I'm a little computer challenged and probably not nearly as knowledgeable as most of the people here. Anyway, I'm sorry if my question sounds stupid! I bought a 250GB external hardrive today to back up all my music and pictures. When I plugged it in, it automaticaly opened Time Machine and asked if I wanted to backup my computer on it, so I hit yes. Now, my question is, if I unplug it from my computer, will it rebackup everything again when I plug it back in? I also looked around in it and was unable to find all my music and pictures so I copied all that onto the external hardrive again. This is probably a really stupid question, but I'm paranoid! Thanks!

Were you using Finder to look around the drive or did you use the Time Machine program?
If you gave Time Machine enough time to actually do the backup, and left it on for a couple of hours, you should be able to see several restore times that you can go back to. To see music files - launch iTunes first, then Time Machine. To see iPhoto picture library files - launch iPhoto first, then Time Machine. To see emails - launch Mail first, then Time Machine.
For other files in folders or on your desktop you just go to the folder where the file used to be, and then launch Time Machine. You can also get back different versions of the same file, based on when it was re-added to the Time Machine backup. Everytime a file changes, Time Machine makes another copy of it.

  • Transfering music to external hardrive without losing music

I have an external hardrive (because all my music and photos are causing my computer to be very slow), so I was looking to transfer all of my music (which is in my iTunes library) to the external drive.
However, when move files from my folder to the external drive, and then attempt to play the songs in my Library, it claims "the file cannot be found" (as i assume it is because i moved it).
Is there anyway I can transfer ALL of my music in my iTunes library, to the external drive, witout having to go through and then 'FIND the location' of each individual file after transfering.
    Help.

I have a similar problem. I need to move the music files to an external hard drive. It seems that all of the itunes music is not in the current default folder that is listed in edit, preference, advanced. When I check the playlist some of the songs are in the itunes music folder, but most are in another folder on the desktop and just reference.
I would like to create a music folder on the new external hard drive and get all of the music files copied to that one location, not just referenced. After that is accomplished I'd like to delete all of the music from the C drive.
This is my daughter-in-laws computer and what Iknow about itunes isn't much, just what I've read in the help files. I know what I want to do, but just not sure in what order to do it. Currently my daughter-in-law has music files in about 3 different places. One place is a music folder on her desktop and it is several layers deep, artist folders and then album folders within those folders. Another place is in the itunes music folder and again their are artist folders and within those album subfolders. The third place is in the My documents, My Music folder, there are several separate music folders that are not in the itunes music folder.
I'm thinking that maybe I should add all of the separate music folders to the itunes folder as a first step. Then after I get them there I could copy that folder over to the new folder I will create on the external hard drive. After that is accomplished and working, I could delete the original files from the C drive.
Now I don't know if that is the correct procedure. If it is, should I drag and drop files into the itunes music folder, or should I use the add folders to the itunes library? I don't want to wind up with a bunch of duplicate files of what is already in there.
There are close to 3000 songs listed in the play list. When I check info on some of the songs, it clearly shows they are in that music folder on the desktop, not in the itunes music folder. The itunes music folder is the default path so I'm not sure what is going on with these files are how best to accomplish it.
I would think dragging and dropping all of the music I want to the external drive and then changing the default folder in itunes would work, but apparently not. I have called apple support twice and both times basically had no help, very nice, but not helpful. Last person I talked said to try this forum. So here I am. If you can give me some guidance about how to accomplish this, I'd appreciate it.
