Changing external HD for TimeMachine

Hello everybody,
It's been a loooong time since I've post in Apple discussion forum (in fact, since I was on MacOS 9.1!!!)
Ok, here's the details : iMac 2008 MacOS 10.6.8 (french) and a brand new 2To external HD (LaCie).
I already use a 500Go MiniStack3 as a back-up for TM and even this little noisy but pretty good external drive is doing a good job, I want to use the LaCie for TM, at least a 1Go partition of it.
How do I do that? I know how to make a partition of course but what about the back-up already on the MiniStack? Can I "clone" it? Do I have to clone it anyway? Or do I have to start all over again and how SnowLeopard will react if I "switch" to the LaCie? Etc....
Thank's
Jacques

It just depends. I have a 21.5 inch iMac with a 1 TB internal drive. I do have a 1 TB external HD with both USB and FW 800 capability as has been suggested. But thus far, my internal HD only has 63 GB of data on it and my Time Machine backup is only taking up 75 GB on my external HD. I've had this iMac and external HD since this past January.
So I could easily have been using a 160 GB external HD during this time period. How much or how fast will my data storage grow on my iMac I don't know right now. So if a user is trying to cut costs and use a drive they already have they may be able to make do for quite a while. The worst that can happen is that TM will start dumping your oldest stored data once the external HD gets full. By that time perhaps the user will decide to invest in a larger drive.
Incidentally, it is usually advisable to have a clone or copy of your internal HD backed up to an external HD in addition to your TM backup. Lots of users here use Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner or even Disk Utility to make this clone. Just something to consider as additional backup.

Steve M.

  • External HardDrive for TimeMachine (MyBook Pro?)

    Hi,
Now that Leopard comes with the TimeMachine I'm thinking about buying an external hard drive. I always liked the MyBook Pro (500GB) from Western Digital but there seams to be quite a lot of people who have/had problems with the MyBooks series. Someone said that this drive would be the perfect hard disk if you want to delete your files
    Whould you recommend this HD?
PS: I know that I'm asking advice about a non-Apple product. So if this kind of thread is not allowed here, please administrators, delete it right away.

I strongly suggest against getting the MyBook line of external HD's. I went through two of these and both had faulty or non-working FireWire connections. I finally got a refund after the 2nd one. There are much better alternatives out there. I am using a 500GB Mercury Elite Pro (FW800/FW400/USB2) from OWC with Time Machine.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Please check below mention point.
    •  Create a relevant DNS entry in the mentioned zone to point to the RDS environment’s internal IP address
    •  Create a relevant DNS entry in external DNS to point to the firewall which is publishing RDS’s external IP address
    •  You can use the below mention script to change the FQDN of the RDP files provided by RD Web Access / RemoteApp and Desktop connection feed.

I did not create the file to be read-only. I created to be able to continue to add to it as I work on it.

  • Script to change Volume for TimeMachine?

    Hello,
could anyone help me with a script that changes the volume for use with Time Machine?
My parents are using their laptops about half the time at home with a Time Capsule. The other half, they stay at the office, equipped with a second Time Capsule which is used for all the other Macs at the office.
We are using MarcoPolo (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/marcopolo.html) to change printer settings and other things.
MarcoPolo is also able to perform own scripts. I want to use this feature, to allow Time Machine to back up to both Time Machines automatically without switching the TM volume manually in the system prefs.
But I don't have any experience in scripting, so I really would appreciate your help.
    Greetings,
    Michael

there is no nice way to do this. this operation is not scriptable. the best you can do is use GUI scripting which essentially records what you do on the screen. this can be done with automator. see this thread for details.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8287777&#8287777
However, any kind of script like that is bound not to be very reliable as a user can easily accidentally interfere with it while the script is running.

  • Problems connecting an external drive (NAS) for TimeMachine backup

    Hi everyone,
I have bought a Verbatim MediaShare, and want to use it as a media NAS, but also as a source for TimeMachine.
I have created an administrators account on the MediaShare NAS, and then launches the Verbatim application "ComputerBackup"
The application first verifies the user account on the MediaShare, and the administrator account is accepted:
I then click the "next" button:
Click the next button again, and then get the following (Safari launches, and I get the -1409 error. from MountVolume.app):
When i click the "edit-buttun" (redigera) in the error message window, the Appelscript interpretor starts:
MountVolume.app gets stuck on the row "open for access myPrefsFile". The value of myPrefsFile is:
    /Applications/
    MediaShare Desktop Applications/ComputersBackup.app/Contents/MacOS/Configure Time Machine.app/Contents/MacOS/MountVolume.app/Contents/MacOS/settings.txt
The file "settings.txt" really exits in that location, and the content of it is: NETBIOS=MEDIASHARE2
The content is probably of no interest, since the error is caused when opening the file for access.
Why do i get the -1409 (Fork error something),
and most important how can I solve the problem?

  • Question about Formatting Buffalo USB 1TB external drive for use with Mac Book Pro Mountain Lion HD

Hi there, Have Mountain Lion HD operating system (not sure if it is 10.8 or 10.8.1. or 10.8.2)  and have a Buffalo USB 3.0 1TB hard drive. When go to utilities to try and format with Mac OS extended, following 3 files show. DriveNavi. exe, Slm.exe and Mac. The option to left click and erase menu is not there. Or at least not as shown in all the help videos.
It is USB connection so will take ages but want to use drive to store video footage and also partition to back up Time Machine. ( travelling in South America and no other Ext Drive option available too buy) how much space should i assign to Time Machine when partitioning?  Is there anything else i need to think about? as new to formatting. Any thing else i can do to make process of transfering footage to Buffalo quicker?
Final question is if it is finally reformatted am i going to have to spend so long accessing footage from hard drive when back home and editing that it really is not worth if, and i should just write this off as an inappropriate purchase, and try and buy more memory cards and not bother with transfering/storing? Thanks in advance for time spent trying to assist.

Use Apple's Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder to format the drive.
The programs on the drive given to you by the manufacturer is likely backup software (or malware) and essentially worthless, it will be wiped when you format the drive.
I do NOT advise you partition that drive for TimeMachine, rather I advise you not to use TimeMachine at all for your purposes because TM is just a backup, not a bootable drive.
    Rather do this.
Get another hard drive that is equal to or slightly larger than your boot drive.
Format the drive in Disk Utiltiy > 1 Partition, option: GUID, Format: OS X Extended journaled, click Erase and move the slider one spot to the right and click Erase. This will take some time as it's going to map off any failing sectors it can BEFORE you lay data on the drive corrupting it.
Next, pay for and download Carbon Copy Cloner, use the default settings and simply clone internal drive to the external drive. this will also take some time the first time.
Next use Disk Utility to Repair Permisisons on both drive. Now reboot the machine and hold the option key down, you can select the external drive clone to boot from!!
You can update the clone the same way by using CCC, but it doesn't take as long, only copying changes.
This is better than TimeMachine as a bootable clone is bootable in case your internal drive fails to boot the machine.
Use the first drive for storage and be very gentle with it while it running, like you should do for all hard drives as they are subjective to shock damage.
The objective with the clone drive is you keep it safe, and not carting it around where it can be more subjective to damage like the other drive will be.
Remmeber you need 2 forms of hardware backup at all times.

  • Can I use my external HD for Time Machine and still use it for storage?

I have a 1TB external HD and my computer has yet to arrive. I was planning on backing it up via Time Machine and I'm wondering if my external HD will still be useable as a storage device once I pair it with Time Machine.
There's no way the backup will take up the full 1TB of space, so I'm hoping it doesn't just go to waste >.<

If you really only want backups of the current contents, don't use Time Machine.
It's designed to keep copies of things you've changed or deleted for as long as possible. This allows you an excellent chance to recover a previous version of something you changed or deleted in error.
It also allows you to revert your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any previous backup, even if that's a different version of OSX. It's rare, but if an OSX update, or installation of a kernel extension or 3rd-party app makes a huge mess, it's much easier and more reliable than rebuilding everything.
You might want to review the [Time Machine Tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#timemachinebasics] and perhaps browse [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). See #1 there for size considerations.

  • I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
Holler if you need specifics on how to do each. This was just an executive summary.

  • Can i choose the resolution of my external display for when the lid is closed when my lid is open

When I close the lid of my MacBook Pro for an external display apple chooses a resolution that isn't compatible with my display can I choose the resolution when the lid is open in any way of my external display for the mode when the lid is closed?

Hi there, I had a similar problem and was unable to resolve it.  I spent about an hour on the phone with a very helpful AppleCare rep who was also completely stuck.  It would seem that the only solution is to choose a setting with trial and error while the lid is closed.
My MacBook ended up getting stuck on a closed-lid reoslution that wasn't supported, so I had to do a screen-share with another device to see what the video card was sending to the external display and change it back that way.

  • My 320GB external drive for Time Machine now only has enough capacity to keep a backup of one day. All my other backups are gone.  What can I do to fix this situation?

I've been using a 320GB external drive for time machine for the last several years.  The backups always worked fine and when necessary I was able to look at & restore older data from the time capsule.  Recently, I keep getting the message that a backup cannot be completed and an older backup will be deleted. Usually this wasn't an issue because I still had several months of information on disk.  Now a one-time backup takes up 315GB and therefore I only have a backup of the previous day.  I don't understand this because I thought that the backup only saves information that has changed and doesn't copy everything everytime.  What do I need to do to get my backups to a reasonable size so that I can keep at least 1 month data stored on it.?  Please don't tell me I need a larger drive ... that would be too easy.

Get a larger drive for your TM backups.
The recommended size is 3 times what you are backup. So if 315 GB is a backup then you need a 1 TB drive.

  • Is there a way to update an external dictionary for services without migrating the services

Is there a way to update an external dictionary for services without migrating the services
Is there a way to update a common external dictionary used by many services without migrating each and every service that uses the dictionary.  I have updated the table in the database and the external dictionary in our Development Environment. The external dictionary is used by many services. When I migrate the changed service to TEST/STAGE/PROD environments (NOTE: the table has been updated in the TEST/STAGE/PROD Databases), only the changed service is having the external dictionary updated. All other services that use the same external dictionary are NOT updated. I have the following questions
Is it possible to migrate dictionaries so that all the services which are using that dictionary are updated?
If the first one is not possible, Is there any other way to update the external dictionary without migrating all the services that use dictionary?

dont think so but I could be wrong
as it were I didn't like the build in audio so I connected some external logictech 2.1 speakers  but there
are times when I use headset so I bought this one
or any minijack splitter will work too so I have 2 things connected to the headset port works just fine

  • How to change NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS parameter for OWB SQLLDR mapping

    Hi,
How to change the NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS database paramater for my SQLLDR mapping?
I have an input flat file which has numeric data with ',' as decimal separator means NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS setting as ',.'
However in my target oracle schema, the decimal separator is '.' which has NLS parameter set as NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS='.,'
    My OWB version is 10.2.
When I checked the configuration parameters of the sql loader mapping and the flat file operator, There is facility to change language, but not NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS setting.
I do not want to change the NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS setting in my database as there are many other projects which will get impacted.
We got a work around as below using external table & premap procedure. But as I have many mappings already developed, It is not possible to use this workaround.
    - I can use premapping procedure with external tables to populate.
    - NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS setting can be changed using procedure for that particular session.
Is there a way to change NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS setting only for that particular mapping/mapping session?
    Thanks,
    SriGP

At this moment , this is not possible . You can see metalink note ID 268906.1.
    It says:
Currently, external tables always use the setting of NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS
    +at the database level.+

  • I'm having a problem with using an external drive for my iTunes media

I recently switched to using an external drive for my iTunes library and I was able to switch everything fine. I was able to get iTunes to download and new TV shows, videos, and music that I purchased from the iTunes store to the iTunes folder on my external drive but I can't get it to do the same for applications. All my applications are still being used through the iTunes folder on my internal drive and new ones that I download get put in that folder too. How can I set it to get iTunes to put new applications and use the existing application files from my external drive?

There is a Windows based utility that will allow one to change the location of the 'My Music' folder, but you appear to be running a Mac.
You may find more appropriate help in the iTunes for Mac Discussions.
If you are running Windows, post back and some info can be provided.

  • How to format external drive for use against windows and mac

    Hi.
Please bear with me, a possible MAC newbie here
I'm about to buy the 13" Mac Book Pro (after ditching the Lenovo X301 because of a super slow processor, slow FSB, slow intel graphics).
But I have a couple of questions before I buy this Mac Book Pro.
    NOTE:
My main OS (stationary pc) is Windows, and will probably be so for a long time.
But I need a lightweight laptop while on the run, and could not actually find any other one than the Mac Book Pro that met my requirements.
I'm using Adobe Lightroom for indexing and managing images on my windows stationary computer and will also use Lightroom on my Mac Book Pro.
I'm to use an external HDD for this purpose and will need to be able to both write and read to/from that HDD from both MAC and Windows.
Export lightroom library to External HDD from Windows (thumbnails + keywords).
Import new images and edit keywords etc from mac book pro in lightroom.
Import changes into my windows library version after been edited from library in mac book pro.
What options do I have when it comes to formatting that HDD?
What will the PROS and CONS be for the different options?
Note (I'm not to switch to Aperture (my main computer is still Windows))
    Regards

Hi.. and thanks for that answer... another related here:
I'm to buy this external drive:
    http://www.lacie.com/no/products/product.htm?pid=11038
    This page:
    http://pc.wikia.com/wiki/FAT32
tells me that windows XP will only format FAT32 to max 32GB,
will my upcoming MAC book PRO be able to format that whole disk using FAT32?
Or do I have to use something else to format it with?
