Changing file information for music

I have some mp3's on my computer, and I've noticed that if I right click them and select "Get Info", in the "More Info" section there is information like album name, genre, authors, title, and so forth. My question is, how do I change this information? I know that you can drag a file into the iTunes library and change it from there by right-clicking and editing it, but is there a way to change this information outside of iTunes, so that when I select "Get Info" for a file that has not been imported into iTunes, it says the album name and song title and so forth that I want it to say, and not the one it's set to now? Can I change that information?

You need to edit the mp3 ID tag. You can do this in itunes, or you can use a seperate program. The finder is not an mp3 tag editor. I use itunes, but there are others.
google "os x mp3 tag editor" (without quotes) you'll find some.

    I found one other way to do it.  I just deleted them all out of my iTunes library. Now I can re-import them from Window's My Music file with the original artists' names intact.

  • Changing file information

    New Mac User here...
    I know that on a PC you can change any file information...
    for instance...if you want to change a music file's genre, title, etc. you can do so without going into itunes.
    i downloaded a song onto my mac and it has all the wrong info (the name of the song is wrong, the genre's wrong) and this is really bothering me. I go to the file and click get info but i can't change anything except the file's extension. if i go to into itunes and click get info on the song i can change anything...but the file info is still the same (wrong title, etc.)
    i don't know if that makes any sense...but can anyone help me out?

    The only way to edit the id3 tags is with an id3 tag editor. iTunes contains an id3 tag editor and it is used via the iTunes interface. If you edit the song/file on the HD from the Finder 'get info' then all you are changing is the name on the HD.
    If you have the 'keep organized' function enabled in iTunes prefs then the name on the HD will be changed to match the name in the iTunes interface.
    From iTunes Help Menu using the search tag of 'id3'
    iTunes: Working with ID3 Tags
    <This article explains how to update ID3 tags on MP3 files that contain no information, partial, or incorrect information in iTunes.
    Symptom
    iTunes contains no information, partial, or incorrect information in some of the fields (Song, Artist, Year, Album, Track Number, Genre)
    Products affected
    iTunes
    Mac OS 9.1
    Mac OS X (all versions)
    Solution
    If you want to change information in one of the ID3 Tags fields in the Library or a playlist, follow these steps:
    Select a song by clicking it within iTunes. If you wanted to change the info for more than one song (batch), select all of the files you want to have similar information by holding down the Command key, and clicking each song to be changed.
    Choose Get Info from the File menu, or use Command-I. This opens the iTunes Song Information window.
    Click the "Tags" tab.
    The Song Name field is next to the iTunes MP3 icon.
    In the "Tags" window you can make changes to all fields shown.
    Note: The Song Name field must contain information. (The Song Name field is located next to the iTunes MP3 icon.)
    An alternative is to use a utility such as ID3X.>

  • How to change file information in ADE?

    I am having trouble loading eBooks into ADE with missing book information. I would like the books to be searchable after they are input into my Nook, but when I load the books into ADE some of the information fields are blank (author, title, etc.). I don't see an "edit file info" button anywhere and when I change the file info in Explorer, it still imports incorrectly. How can I edit file information in ADE so my books can be easily searcheable in my Nook?

    Thank you for advice.
    I know that I can create epub files with fonts included in them.
    My question was- how to refer in the epub to external font file, that ADE would understand and display,
    doing that would let me keep overall file size of my book library significantly less, because I would not need to include same fonts in every book.
    I am able to do it on the devices, I am able to do it in Sony Reader Library, but PC version of Adobe Digital Editions does not work the same way. All I need is to  know where to put external fonts on my PC so that I could refer to them from inside the epub and that ADE would find and display them.
    Though I do appreciate the attention, I'd double the appreciation if you read the question before offering the answer.

  • Unable to change File Type for specific file extensions

    Under Preferences->File Types different file extensions are assigned a file type e.g. The file extension .pkb is assigned the file type of PL/SQL. The file type of PL/SQL then opens the Code editor.
    I have a user who would prefer to open .pkb files in the SQL Worksheet editor but I am unable to change the file type to SQL Script as the option is greyed out.
    How do I change the File Type for these extensions? Is there a preferences file I need to change?
    Version: 3.2.20.09
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
    There is no preference but it turns out you can manually edit one of the preferences.xml files to force PL/SQL types to use the SQL worksheet editor. For SQL Developer 3.2.20.09.87 that file is system3.2.20.09.87\o.sqldeveloper.11.2.0.9.87\preferences.xml and will be located (on Windows 7, for example) in directory C:\Users\<userid>\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer
    No guarantee this will work in future versions of the product, but for now you can add the following two xml blocks...
    For example, for .pls, add to <extensionToContentTypeMap ...>
                <Item>
                   <Key>.pls</Key>
                   <Value>TEXT</Value>
                </Item>
    and <userExtensionList>
                <Item>
                   <docClassName>oracle.ide.db.model.SqlNode</docClassName>
                   <userExtensions class="java.util.ArrayList">
                      <Item class="oracle.ide.config.DocumentExtensions$ExtInfo">
                         <extension>.pls</extension>
                         <locked>false</locked>
                      </Item>
                   </userExtensions>
                </Item> I researched this a while back after reading through some forum thread where someone claimed the PL/SQL file extensions got opened in the SQL editor in his environment, but without stating any specific release information. Possibly it worked for him then due to different product behavior (whether intentional or a bug), or perhaps even due to the technique described above.

  • Is it possibly to change file attributes for files in the Program Files directory?

    Hi,
    I wonder if it is possible to change file time atributes for a file that is in the same folder as the exe file inside the Program File folder. I have the following code that gives System Error Code 5.
    SHGetFolderPath(0, CSIDL_PROGRAM_FILES, 0, SHGFP_TYPE_CURRENT, programpath);
    PathAppend (programpath, TEXT("Testprogram/gnsh.dat"));
    hFile = CreateFile(programpath, GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE, FILE_SHARE_READ | FILE_SHARE_WRITE, NULL, OPEN_EXISTING, FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL, NULL);
    If this had worked, I would for instance have done like this
    GetSystemTime(&st); SystemTimeToFileTime(&st, &ft);
    timeresult = SetFileTime(hFile2, NULL, NULL, &ft);
    I am programming in C with WIndows Api.
    Thanks in advance for answer.

    Hi Vahmat,
    System error code 5 :

    Access is denied.
    I have tested your code on my side, it will get a error code 5 if you have no permission to access a file. Please try to run VS as a administrator and rebuild your project, after this , you code works well on my side.

  • Changing File path for different TIFF files in a For loop

    Hi dear users:
    I am using "IMAQ write TIFF File.vi" that basically writes a TIFF file to a specified file path. However, I would like to CHANGE the file path for each TIFF file i save in a for loop. The reason for this is that the File path has to include the file name and I do not want to write over the same file name all the time in a for loop. What I would like to have are sequential TIFF images. So if the file name would be "Image", I would like the result to be Image0, Image1, Image2 and so forth when I run my For loop. Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks

    Use the "Format Into String" and the "Build Path" functions:

  • Change File Format For Existing Library Files? How?

    Lightroom v5.3: I'm a long time DNG file user for Pentax and Nikon cameras. I recently discovered that about 300 of my RAW Nikon files already imported into the Library are NEF files instead of DNG files as my other 5700 files are.
    I know that I made an error somewhere along the way, but- Is there an easy solution to converting those existing NEF files to the DNG format?
    I was thinking of renaming them, but..........somehow that seems too easy.
    Thanks for any wisdom you can send my way.

    Thank You, John. That menu command went right by me when I searching the best way how to do this task.

  • How can I change file encoding for use in Itunes?

    For instance, aiff to apple lossles files, or mp3 to apple lossless, or any other conversion. And which is best?

    I don't really understand some of the settings that you posted. Stereo and joint stereo are two different things, so you can't encode as both at the same time. For modern MP3 compression, joint stereo is usually preferred, because it allows the encoder to use fewer bits in encoding the stereo information, and it doesn't result in any perceptual losses in stereo imaging.
    48.000 kHz is pointless unless you are ripping from source material that is actually at that sample rate. Redbook-standard CD audio is at 44.100 kHz, so just stick with that (or better yet, leave the sample rate setting at "auto" so it will pick the setting that matches the source material you are ripping from).
    320 kbps is kind of overkill as well. Actually, if you want to rip to MP3, I would advise you to stay away from the iTunes encoder, because most listening tests indicate that it hasn't been updated much since the first versions of iTunes back in the late 1990s. It is no longer a modern encoder. Assuming that you are on a Mac, I suggest that you download the iTunes-LAME plugin (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod_itunes/ituneslameencoder.html), which allows you to encode tracks into the iTunes Music Library using the LAME MP3 encoder. LAME is an open-source encoder project that has been continuously developed over many years and has been heavily tested for transparency. The latest version (3.97b1) has been shown in listening tests to be almost the same quality as equivilent-bitrate AAC files.
    Once you download the iTunes-LAME plug-in, you can install the latest version of LAME by going to http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html . Scroll down to "Encoders/decoders built using LAME 3.97 beta 1" and download "For Mac OS X." This is a Unix Executable file. To install it in the iTunes-LAME plugin, go to Your User Folder/Library/iTunes/Scripts. Right click on the iTunes-LAME application and select "Show Package Contents." Open the "Contents" folder that appears and then open the "Resources" folder. You should see a Unix Executable there titled "lame." Replace this file with the 3.97b1 Unix Executable that you downloaded. Now iTunes-LAME will encode with LAME v.3.97b1 instead of its default LAME build. 3.97b1 has some major improvements over earlier LAME versions, so even though this installation process may seem daunting for some people, it is well worth it.
    To use iTunes-LAME, you first select a CD or playlist from the Source list (the left-hand column) in iTunes. You then click on the Script menu (the little script icon) and select "Import with LAME...". iTunes-LAME opens, showing you a command line and an Import button. LAME encoding options are selected using command-line switches. Fortunately, there are variable bit-rate (VBR) presets that have been heavily tested for transparency, so you don't really need to know anything about the command line options. Just type in "-V 2 --vbr-new," which is one of the most heavily-tested presets, and hit the Import button. This results in variable bit rate files that usually average out to between 170 and 240 kbps, depending on the complexity of the source. For more information on the presets, see http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME#RecommendedEncoderSettings
    The only major downside to using iTunes-LAME is that it cannot take advantage of iTunes' error correction option when ripping CDs. If you want error correction though, you can always just have iTunes rip to WAV first, and then convert those WAV files to MP3 using the iTunes-LAME plugin.
    Feel free to ask any more questions.

  • Changing file extension for Blu-Ray H264 export

    The output is written as .m4v, and my authoring tool will not accept this.
    It must be any of the following: m2v, m2p, mpg, mpeg, avc, 264, h264 bsf or vc1
    Can I simply change the extension - or is there a way to get the correct extension I need?
    (CinemaCraft allows you to define the extension used, for example)

    Any containering around the raw .264 video stream will screw up the embedded information.
    Non-Encore Bluray authoring tools will not accept any file format that is containering that stream.
    Also, if you want your bluray to be "legal" - ie be possible of passing a verification suite for pressing at a repro house - you have to export to raw .264 (thus why high end author tools won't import .m4v, mp4, mov etc).
    So, not you can't just change the extension. a m4v file is a ISO media container that holds a video stream... yes m4v, mp4 and mov are all based on the same standard - and yes you can thus change the file extension and it often works but......
    ... in this case you need a raw h.264 stream as a file (.264).
    The only thing I can think of is that you container it to MPEG-Transport Stream (MPEG-TS) with the file extension .mpg.
    It has the highest chance of import but I'm not sure if it destroys the h.264 stream's ability to pass BD verification.
    Note also that I've heard that the bundled H.264 encoder (made by Main Concept) does not have the mandatory "slice" support for AVC level 4.1 and higher so if you encode at that level it's already an illegal stream that you can guarantee will not play ok in every consumer blu-ray player.

  • Can't change file association for Office

    Hi
    I've previously gone to Apple Support without success on this - so I hope it's not too obvious a question!
    I'm running Office v.X on my new Macbook, having previously uninstalled the demo for Office 2004 from the machine. However, when I save Word files emailed over to me they are associated with the non-existent 2004 version of Word (11.2.0) and consequently I can't open them from the Finder (gives error -10660 as it can't find this application).
    While I can change my Word files individually to point at the v.X version of Word that's actually running on the Macbook, if I click Change All from within the Get Info... box then the application in Open with... reverts back to 2004 Word! This makes it impossible for me to universally associate my Word documents with Word v.X. Grrrr.
    Apple have suggest that the Finder is picking up that Office 2004 is still the default application. However I ran the uninstall utility and there's nothing obvious in the Library/Receipts folder - where apparently you'd expect this to be set.
    Any ideas as it's really irritating?! Please keep it reasonably simple for me
    Many thanks

  • Question about how Mac OS X stores file information for iMovie and iPhoto

    I'm relatively new to Macs (am using a 3yr old iMac and a new MBA running 10.6.4 and iLife 11) and I have this general question.
    I'm using the iMac for a lot of Movie projects and photos. I've very quickly filled up my 500Gb hard drive and I don't understand why other than this:
    I import a movie using iMovie and it's stored in an Events folder. I then make a project and it's stored in an Projects folder, I then share it to iTunes and it's stored in the iTunes Music/Movies folder. And I also see the movie in an iMovie Shared folder. In other words, it appears that a 2Gb movie (as an axample) becomes about 10Gb because it's saved in multiple places. Must I keep all of them?!
    With iPhotos, I've imported about 6Gb of photos from my Windows PC. No problem. I copied across all the directories and then imported them into iPhoto. I then thought I could delete all the directories as the iPhoto folder became 24Gb in size! Not sure how but it seems that as well as keeping my original 6Gb of photo directories it's also put them into the iPhoto directory and somehow made it a big folder size?! If I delete the original folders (since they're now in the iPhoto app folder) then I can't actually browse the JPGs files can I except from within iPhoto only?
    I've got about 80Gb of music, about 6Gb of photos and about 80Gb of movies. Somehow it's pretty much filled up 500Gb of hard drive (and very little other programs or files other than the normal iMac stuff it comes with) because of the way the Mac (iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto) seems to have the same thing copied everywhere.
    All input greatfully receive and apologies if I'm being thick.
    Richard.

    Richard
    I'll answer the iPhoto part for you.
    If you use iPhoto in its default setting then the images are copied into the Library on import. Yes you can now delete the directories you have copied over.
    then I can't actually browse the JPGs files can I except from within iPhoto only?
    Yes and no...
    The point of iPhoto is that it's your Photo Manager. It's the "go-to" app when you want to do anything with your Photos. - View them, edit them, email them, print them, use them in other apps, upload them whatever - all of these things are done from iPhoto.
    There are two advantages to working this way.
    1. You get to work with your Photos and don't have to think about files. This means the organisation possibilities are much greater than just files in folders. You can use Keywording, Smart Searching, Albums, Events and a plethora of other bases for categorising and therefore find your pics.
    2. iPhoto is integrated throughout the entire OS. That means your Library is available throughout the OS without iPhoto being open by means of Media Browsers. You can search your Library from a MEdia Browser and so on.
    So, while, yes, the files are not browsable via the Finder, there's no need to. Everything you need to do can be done with iPhoto.
    Want to edit the pics in something other than iPhoto:
    You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
    Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
    There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 and later*
    You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    (Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and later* ...
    Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
    To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    *If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
    For users of 10.6 and later:
    You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    For Users of 10.4 and later:
    Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards
