Changing File-Open Default Column Widths

In Word and other applications I find I want the column widths to be wider (and stay wider) than the default.
Someone on Mactopia said he was able to do the following:
1) Open Word
2) Use File>Open
3) Adjust the window to your taste
4) Select and Open a document
5) Quite Word immediately on command Q
Word is displaying a Finder window for that dialog. You need to hit an
action button to make Word store the settings (in other words, you need to
actually open a file).
You then need to Quit Word to force it to SAVE the new settings.
However, I found this did not work. He replied:
Hmmm... Munged preferences is the problem: but which ones, I wonder? The
change you make is not being saved. It is on my system. I just opened and
quit Word three times to make sure the change held.
OK, quite word and try re-naming your Normal template, and any file with
"word" in its name in your ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft folder.
When you re-launch Word, the files will be rebuilt. If this fixes the
problem, great, If it doesn't, the size is being held in a Finder
preference (the Word File>Open dialog is actually an Apple Finder window)
but I have no idea which one.
Any ideas about this?
Thanks.

Thanks for the quick answer Jay! I tried the latter approach and it didn't work.
Given my limited understanding of CSS I first researched what the # signifies and found that it precedes a value from an ID attribute of an element. Which makes sense because this override would need to know specifically what to adjust.
Next I scanned the source and couldn't find an ID of portletColumnFormatter_0 the closest thing I found was a summary field (summary="Portlet column formatter table.").
Edit: Hmmm...
A quick scan of portal.bea.com shows that ID does in fact exist there but it appears that site is on version 6.5.0
Was this ID value missing in an earlier install version perhaps?
Edit: Aha!
Yet a few moments later I realized my err...our dev environment is still on 6.1.0 which, if memory serves, was missing this key attribute!
It appears my first priority should be to syncrhonize our two environments and THEN worry about customizations.
Thanks again for the help, I'll refer back to this as soon as I'm upgraded:)

When my Finder windows open in column view, all the columns are always VERY wide. I have to then spend time resizing them to a managable width. Is there any way to set default column widths in the Finder's Column view?

No, because you can't set a columns view default.

  • Sap r/3 rel 4.6c - F-03 Process open Items Column Width standard tab output

    Hello All:
I use SAP R/3 Release 4.6C.  I am learning how to use the F-03 Clear G/L Account function.  On the front page of F-03 you enter the account number and then click process open items.
The output comes on the screen in the "standard" tab.  In this tab you may start to clear your items.
My question:  How do you change the width of these columns?  I know you can change the column width by moving the column margin with the mouse.  I want to know how to change the column width permanently - make the column a "fixed" width that will not change unless I change it.
Do you know which variant I need?

  • Is it possible to set default column widths in list view when using a finder window in Mavericks?

The default 'document' column is way too wide and forces you eye to track all the way across the screen to read info like "date modified', 'kind' or 'size'.
Tried several times to create a narrower default 'document name' column with no results. Couldn't find anything in preferences or view options. Tried dragging column headers while holding the down the option key with no results.
Every time I open a new finder window, all columns except the 'document' column affixed to the right side of the window. Also, when you grab the bottom right corner of a window to resize smaller, the lists become re-affixed to the right side of the window when opening the window back up.
Experiencing the same problem in Mavericks 10.9.3 on an iMac and Macbook Pro Retina.
Thanks if you've made it this far:)

This was a great place for me to start
    Thank you
I took profdant139's suggestions a bit further as my real goal was to have the "Document column" narrower. The goal to be able to see all the other document info that was usually hidden way out to the right
To achieve my results I right clicked in the upper bar with the column names and chose from the drop down box "comments" column (as suggested). I then dragged it to the far right. This pushed all the other columns over.
In the end of the day I ended up adding "Size" and "Date modified" columns as well to get my desired results.
Remember one can move different columns around to be in the order you need by clicking on the column to get it active and then left click and drag it to where you want
Another great thing is that by default (Using Mavericks) the date modified, opened, created columns have date and time. One can shrink them down to xx/xx/xx format by manually adjusting the column width like one does in Excel - click on column separator up top and drag
Once all that is done, at least on my box, I closed it out and opened up a new finder window and everything was as I wanted.
Thank you for the help  from the above helper to get me here

  • File Open Default View

Using PhotoShop Elements 3, I would like the 'File Open' command to open with LIST VIEW, instead of 'Thumbnails'. Have not found a way to change the default to do this.

Just another amazing problem the MicroSoft will not fix. I prefer details view every time I open a file after just opening the application (e.g., MSWord, etc.), but every time I do this I have to manually select details view. I've tried everything to fix this short of purchasing 3rd party software to do it. I would guess I have done this 50,000 times (at my job) this year alone. But do you think Bill Gates cares that I wasted all of this time? You know the answer to that question. I just purchased a IMac for home (my 1st Apple computer since early 90's), and I'll never purchase another PC that is running the Microsoft operating system...

  • Reports 6i default column widths

Reports 6i does not appear to pull the correct column width for varchar2 columns when building reports through the wizard. It sets them to 10 regardless of the length.
Is there a way to either always define a specific database column to a specific width in reports or to get reports to size the column correctly through the wizard?
    Thanks

  • Changing file extension default application

Hello, I periodically change my .avi and .mpg movies default "open with" application to VLC, but although the association change in first place, in a few days the default application mysteriously turn back to QuickTime.
Is this a bug or an Apple QuickTime appropriative policy? Anyway, is there any way to change to VLC permanently?
    Thanks in advance
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Open one of your .avi or .mpg file's "Get Info" window. Pick a new "Open With" application and click the "Change All" button. Confirm your changes.
From this point on (until you change it again) any time you double-click to open any of these files your chosen app will be used to play the file.
You can temporarily override these settings by Control-clicking on a icon and choosing a different app from the pull down menu.

  • Default column width in Address Book

When I compose a new message in Mail and call up the Address Book, the first column containing the groups is always very narrow. I can widen it manually and it stays wide for the session, but the next time I start Mail, it shows up narrow again. Is there a way to set the default width of the Address Book columns?

    Greetings,
The width of columns in the Address Book pane in Mail can only be changed on a per-session basis; after you quit Mail, they will revert to their original values. There is no way to set the default width of columns for Address Book.

  • Spool file, column width question

I'm a new user, and just converted to Oracle 9 from Informix.
I am trying to create a (comma delimited) spool file, but the
column width for some of the numbers that I'm pulling in my
queries are very wide. For example, if my query is pulling
first, last, account#, and cust#, the spool output is as such:
    JOHN , SMITH ,
    10203 , 4987
I realize I can use 'COL name FOR an' to adjust the width of the
text columns, but how can I make the width of the number columns
only 5 or 6 digits wide?
    Help!

    Peter,
If you just want a comma separated value file without formatted columns and you want to eliminate all spaces, then just trim all your values and concatenate them together. See the example below.

  • Interactive Report Column Width adjustable?

I am using the interactive reports in 3.1.2 and love them. That said, I have a question/problem. I have a column in my report that is essentially comments. It often contains hundreds of bytes of text per row of data. When I use the interactive report I find no where that I can define a default column width or number of report rows to display. So, when I run the report, the column with the comments defaults to a column width of about 25 characters and this causes it to display many html rows for this report row and makes the report very ugly.
Does anyone know if there is a way to redefine a column in an interactive report to prevent this?

    Scott,
    Using FOP.
Standard reports PDF can resize columns.
Interactive report does not. Additionally, the page size does not work the same as the regular reports. Moving between landscape and portrait changes the size of the height and width.
I assume there are several problems.
    1. The report does not resize horizontally. I will have to create a second report to see if I can duplicate the issue.
    2. The Print page of the report region does not have the same fields as the regular reports. I am not sure why or how to overcome the lack of being able to resize columns, etc.
    3. The functionality on the page does not seem to all work. At least not the same way as the regular reports. Changing paper size and orientation are two examples I have verified.
    4. Can't select a template. How can a different XSL-FO template be used?
I am going to try and push it to Word.

  • Column width in finder LIST view

I am using Yosemite.  This issue has been driving me mad for years and try as I may I cannot find the solution.
How do you set a default column width in Finder LIST view for all folders?  Whatever I do (for example VIEW OPTIONS, USE AS DEFAULTS) does not work.
Can anybody help? I would use third party plugins if I could find something that controls this.  Please note: I am using LIST view NOT column view.
    Many thanks

Like Jim, I also generally use Icon view for folders containing images, and have the View Option to show item info selected. Column view will also show image dimensions (both of these work, provided the folder has been indexed by Spotlight).
If you want to see the dimensions, but also want to view the folder contents in List view, the best you can do is bring up the Inspector (Command-Option-i), expand the More Info section, then move down the list using the arrow key. The Inspector pane's contents change with each new selected item, and the More Info section includes the dimensions.

  • Dashboards - Alert View Widget Column Width

Hello, I am trying to create some Dashboards using the Alert Widgets. I am having problems with the column width. The default widths are not useful and take up to much screen space for a dashboard (example" Maintenance mode is really wide just for
a icon). After I create the Dashboard I can adjust the column width just fine, but as soon as I go to another view and come back SCOM forgets how I had it all configured and resizes it back to default. How do I fix this and get it to save my custom widths?
    Thanks!

It is because every time you go back to Alert View Widget, it will reload its original configuration. You can modify the orgininal configuration setting by export the MP, contains the Alert view Widget, and modify its XML file.
The column width setting is under
Presentation -> Component Overrides -> ComponentOverrideID -> Bindings -> Binding PropertyID="Columns" -> Complex Value Type(select the coumn which you want to set the column width) --> Binding Property ID="Width" -> SimpleValue Value="12"
( 12 is the new column width)
