Changing files from Mac to PC...help needed!!

Hi there,
I've been a Mac user for 3 years but recently my G4 iBook has broken, and I've had to purchase a Dell laptop. But I'm having a few problems copying across my files from the Mac to the PC....
- Before my Mac broke, I managed to back up all my files (mainly music and photos) onto a Maxtor external hard drive. But now when I plug this into my new PC laptop, it does not come up. I cannot access any of the files. Any ideas why not?!
- Secondly, is it possible to use my iPod with the PC laptop (even though it has only ever been used on the Mac), without losing the music? It's asking me to re-format the iPod when I plug it into the PC laptop, but I really don't want to lose the music, particularly as I can't get any of my files off the external hard drive!!
In a bit of a pickle with it all and would really appreciate some (jargon-free!) advice.

You need either free HFSExplorer to access files on Mac OS Extended; or MacDrive7; or even Paragon NTFS 7.0 ($29).

Once something similar happened to me. The external drives I had set up for FCP to use for some reason were not mounted, and FCP put all its render files on the main drive and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Go to applications, and control-click (and hold down) on your FCP icon; you should get a pop up menu that says "show package contents". Select that, select the "contents" folder, then the "mac OS" folder. See if your quicktime file is in there, or if you've got render files in the "render" folder or audio render files in the "audio render" folder that don't belong there.
That's where FCP sticks stuff when your documents FCP project folders are not available or when external drives you've selected aren't available.

Are you doing these transfers over a Network connection, the systems are networked together over your Home LAN? Or are you doing it with an external drive?
If an external drive Mac OS X can READ Windows NTFS formatted drives but can NOT WRITE to them. So you can co[py files to the drive on your Win PC and READ them on the Mac but Mac OS X can not Write to that drive so you can't copy files from Mac to that drive.
For an external drive to work on both systems, be able to Read and Write from/to that drive, it has to be formatted either FAT32 or exFAT.

Hi i have a mac with osx 10.4.8 and a pc, i need to transfer a large amount of files from mac to pc (around 200GB)
Now i have lots of external HDs which are all used by either the PC or the macs. the ones formatted for the macs cannot be read atall by the PC without some expensive software, the PC formatted one i have appears to be readable on the mac, but when i try to copy the files onto it or change anything, i am not able to change/add anythingn due to permissions problems.
Not sure what to do, i have quite a few HDs with plenty of sapce, but if they are all in the wrong format i cant really wipe/reformat them easily with files on them, nor do i want to buy yet another HDD just to transfer some files....
Any ideas/advice?

Greetings, I have an Indesign CS5 file from mac that i can't open on a pc. I made a package on my mac first, and then send it through wetransfer to my email. when i open it on the pc with a same version it says i need to upgrade my version first, which i already did and still didn't work. Could somebody help me please?

What version do you have on the PC? CS5 files should open in CS5, CS5.5 and CS6. Perhaps the file is really a CS5.5 or CS6 file? You can find out using Jongware's script at Adobe Forums: [Ann] Identify Your InDesign File

I am running Parallel but I cannot access the Mac folders and files when I am running Windows.
I cannot access flash drives from Windows either.

Theres a feature called shared folders that works
quite nicely. I cant quite remember the specifics but
I have done it before. Or if you've got a few small
ones copy and pasting between work spaces now works.

Now all I need do is figure out how to turn on the sound when using Windows. Everything is as it should be on my Xp setup but no sound. Mac must be controlling this but I do not know where to look to solve this situation.

well to be 100% technical, no you didn't but that aside, it good to know there are ways for people to transfer music into the default apps without iTunes, if they have a need.
I tend to use 3rd party apps for documents, like your mentioned iExplorer etc, which are handy.
I see from a search the two "apps" you mentioned are not iOS apps, which I had assumed, SyncPod and FreeSync are apps for your computer, that would explain their access to the default Music/Video apps.
I had wondered how Apple had allowed iOS apps in the store that could get around the sandboxing in iOS of apps.

Your external drive is formatted NTFS which OS X can read from but not write to. You can either install third-party software on the Mac to enable writing to the drive or repartition and reformat the drive for exclusive use with the Mac. If you don't need to move files between a Mac and a PC, then I would recommend the latter solution.

3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

Get a third drive if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, set it not to exclude that drive, and drag the files to it. If you're moving an iTunes or iPhoto library, launch the application with the Option key held down and choose the moved library.

There ia a very easy way to tranfer files from Mac to PC or PC to Mac. Very simple connect them to the same network (LAN), Log in to the other and select the files you want to copy an paste them to the other computer.
I do it all the time. From Mac to PC and PC to Mac.
No Problems at all. Much better then an external hard drive and moving it around. And No need to worry about drive format. Each OS takes care of that when files get copied over the network.
