Changing font under desktop icons

Something kind of screwy has been going on with the font under my desktop icons for a while now. It's totally different from the font that the rest of my system uses. I'm not entirely sure what font it is, but it looks a lot like the font that terminal uses. It's white and outlined in black when I don't use a color label, and then turns really skinny and black when I do use a color label. Is there any way to revert back to the original font? Thanks.

If you mean Font Finagler, then no, that won't change your fonts. David was saying his fonts weren't displaying properly, which Font Finagler may fix by removing corrupt font cache files.
It sounds like you want to actually change the fonts the system uses for its display. The only haxie I know of that can do that is Silk.

OS X only permits changing the font size but not the font itself. There are third-party interface modifiers that may enable you to make more extensive changes, but since the basic system fonts are embedded they are not easily changed. The freeware tool, TinkerTool, can be used to make some font changes, but icon fonts. Look for it and other software at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Is there a known security vulnerability where "Firefox" under desktop icon is changed to "\'/.;|" ?

I went to use Firefox this AM and noticed the changed Name under the Firefox icon. At first I thought it might have somehow was corrupted until looking at the symbols- \'/.;l -and thinking maybe there was something more to it.
I'm running Mac OS X and should be most current on both OS and Firefox versions.

Thanks to all for the replies. Fixing the icon name was never an issue. Understanding how it changed was. I buy into inadvertently striking keys but still can't figure out how the shift key combo character was created.
I tried recreating one in a text document using a legal notepad, which is the only possible culprit (sits next to my keyboard), with no success. I guess it was a real fluke.

Based on my test, we can modify the desktop icon font color from white to black.
For details:
1.
User Configurations -> Preferences -> Registry
2.
Right click Registry, point New registry Item, choose Update Action.
3.
Modify the Background color: HKCU/Control Panel/Colors/Background
4.
Modify the key:0 0 0

Changing location of desktop icons

I made a news ticker in director 11. I want to place it on
top of the desktop. I am doing it perfectly fine but i want to
change the location of the desktop icons so that no icons come
under my director window. How can I do it through Lingo? Can I
access the computer desktop through Lingo?

buddyAPI, but I don't recall ever seeing a function like that...

How do I change application/dock/desktop icons?

I recently downloaded a set of icons I'd like to replace my current icons on my desktop/dock. However, I'm having some problems. I've searched for the process to switch them I'm aware that you have to go to the Command+i option, copy the icon in the left, then go to what you want to switch and paste it to the icon in the left there. However, I think I might be having a problem changing it to the icon because after I get the info window open, the icon in the left is not the actual icon I'm trying to change it to. It looks like this:
Instead of changing to the icon/picture I want, it changes to the identification of a .png/.ico image.
Am I making any sense? And if so, can someone please help?

I don't think I am exactly sure of your problem, but I'll comment anyway. The procedure for changing an icon is, kindof, how you have described it; select the item with the icon you want to use and choose Get Info. Then select the icon in the Get Info window, by clicking on it once (in the upper left). This will cause an outline to appear around it. Then select Copy from the edit menu. Now select the item you want to change and repeat that same procedure, except, select Paste from the Edit pull down menu, in place of Copy, after you have selected the icon in the Get Info window.
For changing System icons, you'll need something like CandyBar.

Changed font in desktop and safari

Hi, I found the following changes in the font in desktop. The font that is used for showing the size of volume, file or folder etc has gotten changed to something ugly.

also, some fonts on safari seem to have changed. Other users on my machine seem to have the leopard defaults. Where can i change the font to the default again?

I validated all the fonts but still no change. I used font smoothing for sizes below 4 point and it improved visibility.

Why can't i change imac lion desktop icons

following the proper directions with get info etc. icons from websites will not change on imac desktop with downloaded icons with either png or jpg extensions

If you are selecting the new icon file and then pressing Command-C (Copy), that will not work to place the icon on the Clipboard (which is where it must be in order to do a Paste).
Do a Get Info on the new icon file. In its Get Info window, select the icon in the upper left, then press Command-C. Then go to the old file, do a Get Info, select itsicon in the upper left, and press Command-V (Paste).
If the Get Info window displays a generic icon for the new file in the upper left, look down to the preview area in the Get Info window - it should display the icon you want to snag. Double-click that preview image, and it should open in Preview. Then click the image in Preview once, press Command-A (Select All), then press Command-C (Copy). Close the Preview window, do a Get Info on the target file, select its icon in the upper left and press Command-V (Paste).

CONTROL-Click anywhere on your desktop, or in a folder, and choose "Show View Options".
From there, you can select the font size, as shown in this image. Here, I have selected "16".
You can do this in any folder.
In Safari, select "zoom in" & "Zoom Text Only" in the VIEW menu.

No options for changing fonts under Preferences

I recently lent out my ibook to my father because his M$ machine died. I set up his verizon email. I went in to change the font settings under preferences and all the options except account were non existent. I set him up with a standard user account. I then checked my settings under admin and i could see all options. I then changed him to an admin account and tried to change the font setting in his mail, still no other options. What am i missing here? I am up to date on downloads, can you help me?

Sounds like the Preferences toolbar is closed on Accounts.
Go to Mail > Preferences and at the top right of the Preferences window is a clear pill shaped button. Selecting this button closes/opens the complete Preferences toolbar.

Try launching "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering these commands:<pre>
defaults write com.apple.finder FXDesktopLayoutGridCharCount -int 50
osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to quit'</pre>
Then restart the "Finder" by clicking on its "Dock" icon.
You can try different numbers other than "50" until you find a value that suits your preferences.

How do I change the Itunes desktop icon to something more pleasing when the "Change Icon" button is greyed out in properties?

It appears that you can't change the icon that iTunes creates in the All users desktop, but you can create a new one if you really care about this.
Go to Program Files\iTunes, right click on iTunes.exe and select Send to>>Desktop (create shortcut). I think you will be able to change this icon.

First, you are running a very old version of Firefox. Please update to Firefox 11 ASAP.
