Changing harddrives

Hi there,
I've recently switch from Windows to Mac and I am also in the process of getting to know the ins-and-out of Lightroom 1.1. I really like it!!
My question is about external harddrives in combination with Lightroom. I have one external Lacie harddrive (500GB)on which all my photo's are saved and which I use for my editing and stuff. Then I have another external 500GB back up hard drive which is an exact copy of the one I use for my editing.
Right now I'm in the process of importing my images in Lightroom and I was wondering what would happen if my main hard disk would crash - hopefully not in the near future ;-)- and I would just attach my back hard disk. Will Lightroom have any problems with that? Will it find the photos or will I have to import them all over again?
Since the structure of the two disks are the same I would think that Lightroom shouldn't have a problem but you never know.
Has anybody has experience with this or a thought on this?

Ensure you save the Metadata (Cmd/Ctrl-S) regularly and make that part of your backup. Keep regular backups of the Catalog (make it a prompt when you start.)
If Lightroom can't find images on a hard disk, it will warn you and you can repoint them to a new source. Probably best to do it on an image high up in your hierarchy so it makes it easier to find all of your images.
If your drive has SMART technology, there is also a useful menu bar item to tell you the status of your drives. SMART Reporter http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2006/06/05.1.shtml

  • Change harddrive on the new MBP 13"?

    Hello there!
I'm about to switch from PC to Mac for the first time! I'm going to buy the cheapest version 13" Macbook pro. Is it possible to change the harddrive as easily as it was on the previous verion (Macbook unibody)?
Why I'm asking is that I'm waiting flr SSD to become cheaper... If it's not possible to easy change the harddrive, will it void the warranty?
I need to know this before i buy the new Mac and makes the switch
If it will void the warranty I'll buy a larger harddisk with my order!
    Thank you for the help!
    Best regards
    Johan Linnarsson, Sweden!

Yes, it's possible, and no it will not void the warranty. Apple considers the HDD in the all the new unibody MBPs to be user-replaceable - the even provide instructions in the manual (p.37):

  • Instructions how to change harddrive of GT780R

Is there somewhere on the web a good instruction how to replace the standard hard drive in the GT780R? I searched on youtube en google, but didn't manage to find anything and I'm not that familiar with this kind of upgrades.
I would like to replace the standard 500GB harddisk with a 120GB solid state (Corsair Force GT) and put the original 500GB disk as a second disk. Do I have to put the solid state in the socket that now contains the 500GB, or can I put the solid state in the other (empty) socket and make this my primary boot disk?
Edit: and another question: do have to change any settings in the bios or windows to make sure that windows understand that de drive is not a conventional drive anymore but a fast solid state? I read somewhere that eg defragging should be turned off?

I cannot confirm 100% that this is true, but in theory yes this should be fine.

Depends on which version of Windows you will install. Windows 7 natively supports SSDs, and will configure itself accordingly if it detects it is being installed to an SSD.

  • Can I chang HardDrive from iMac Core 2 Duo ?

    Hello ,
I have a iMac core 2 duo 17", I want chang the HDD by my self,Cann't I? or How?

The hard drive in an iMac is not considered a user-replaceable item. If you replace the hard drive and later have to get the computer repaired while in warranty, your warranty will likely not be honored. Any damage or defects occurring after you replace the hard drive could be considered caused by replacing drive, thus voiding the warranty.
Although I would recommend you have the work done by an authorized Apple technician, the decision is yours to make. It's your risk. You'll find disassembly help here.

  • Mouse lags after changing Harddrive

After i installed my SSD in my Mac Mini and restored the Operation System (Mountain Lion) from my Time Machine Backup i encounter a very strange mouse lag. When i move the mouse, the cursor jumps almost every 3 seconds.
I've tried already a different mouse and different USB Ports. Same problem.
I rebootet the system and checked Activity Monitor for weird Process behaviour, but everything seems fine.
    Any suggestions?

I fixed the lagging issue now. It seemed to be an issue with the external monitor. After unplugging the HDMI cabel the lagging stopped.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Dual Harddrives Mountain Lion

Hi, how do I register my copy of mountain lion? I changed harddrives and I've been having permission problems with the harddrive that are stemming from the OS not being verified on my new harddrive. I purchased Mountain Lion from the App store on my old harddrive and Carbon Copy Cloned the old drive onto the new one (the clean install is annoying, because I have 2 internal harddrives, and setting up locations confuses me). Any help with how to show my computer/ apple that I didn't torrent my copy of Mountain Lion would be much appreciated. I still have the old harddrive in an external enclosure (the one that I originally downloaded it onto if that helps). Thank you
Or if someone could list the neccessary steps in order to do a clean install as well as link the applications on the secondary drive.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. I had the same problems when I was using Snow Leopard. The problem is that my user account is not allowed to read/write my harddrives, but not all the time. I can't seem to pin point what I'm doing that is causing it, and thus it appears that the permissions for each drive will randomly switch between my account being read only and read/write. When I was on snow leopard I had a similar issue which occured whenever I opened itunes (only itunes, no clue why). Neither of my Harddrives get a lock on them, just the access privelages are changed. Also in disk utility, the repair permissions option isn't clickable

  • OT: Change of bootdrive

    Hi guys
I write this here, because I got no answer on the Asus forum, and I hope that perhaps any experts here know the answer to my question
I have tha Asus P9X79 Pro board in one of my PC's with Adobe CC on. I have a hardrive tray where my bootdrive is inside, so that I can change harddrive, according to mu choise of OS / applications. On another PC of mine with an older Asus board, I can just switch harddrive and the PC automatically finds that out, and boots on the system drive installed at the time, but on my machine with the P9X79 Pro board inside, I have to press F8 in post to be able to chose the boot device, which I find a little strange, since the board is much newer that the older one, where it works. It actually works with a windows 8.1 boot disc, but not with windows 7.
I have upgraded to the latest bios, but no luck there either. The bootdiscs are different size and make, but would this have anything to say?
Any input would be highly apreciated, since it is a slightly pain in the a** to have to press F8 everytime at boot.
    Thanks
    Ulf

Actually John - I can boot from a CD / DVD too.
In the main section of the BIOS, you put in boot device priority, and there I have CD/DVD first and then harddrive second. Then further down in the advanced section, I have configures the harddrive priority section itself, and it is within there that I have only one entry listed, so that it is forced to boot on whatever it recognices on this connector.
This means, that if I have a bootable disc in the CD/DVD it will boot on that, and if not on the harddrive. I usually make images from my PC with Acronis Trueimage, and I boot up on a USB stick, but in that case I just press F8 in post to choose bootdevice.

  • Do i need to deactivate file vault before installing

I currently have file vault enabled for him home directory. I will use full disk encryption in lion. Do I have to disable file vault first before I install. Also, I plan to make a clone of my current hard drive first, as a precaution. Should I disabled file vault before making that clone?

no, you do not.  reinstalling adobe software after an os change doesn't require a "new" activation.  it will require another activation for you but it will still be recognized as an activation on the same computer.
if you made a significant hardware change (harddrive, cpu), then deactivating before the change and activating after the change would be a good idea but adobe is good about accomadating customers that fail to do that.  in fact, many people are unable to do that because of computer loss/harddrive crash and adobe makes it easy to reset their activation count even in those circumstances (via chat, http://www.adobe.com/support/chat/ivrchat.html).

  • Movie files are not recognized

MacBook is from late 2007 OS X 10.5.8. Last December, I had to change harddrive and after the new harddrive, movies (from DVD´s or attachment with .mvw format) are not recognized. Quick Time Player and DVD Player are installed.
YouTube, streaming movies, news clips etc are OK
    Any hints?

    cceder,
QuickTime cannot handle all kinds of video unless you install extra tools, such as Perian:
    http://perian.org/
Alternatively, you can try VLC media player, which supports most video and audio formats.

    Please Help

reinstalled 10.5.6 that come with iMac countless times Apple hardware test is fine Memtest is fine changed harddrive no change opened iMac up and cleaned fans and everything else no change Changed keyboards and mouse no change its got me stumped why Windows 7 works fine but OS X does not had iMac since 2009 never had problem before.
PS nothing but keyboard and mouse connected to iMac
    Thanks Mark

Yes I am doing a complete erase of the hard drive and installing OS X brand new
as far as hard drives I am only using one at a time, I changed out to a brand new harddrive
If the logic board is failing WHY is windows 7 running fine with no problems I do not understand I have had macs all my life never had problems like this before
When Spotlight is indexing it just takes so long and does not finish as far as I know it should not take longer than 10 mins on a fresh system
any other things you could think of would be good as at the moment its just a very expensive Windows machine
    Thanks Mark

  • Can't restore the database

Can't restore database main identity after changing harddrive and retoring data with time-machine. This showes when I try to start Outlook and need to run Microsoft database Utility Please help.

Thanks to both Patrik and Jason.
The files were all stored locally on the Web/App server, so the SAP note doesn't really help much.
Anyway, I ended up taking the long way round:
Manually restored the AppSet, AppSetExtra and OLAP databases
Re-pointed the OLAP data source to the new server name
Manually added the AppSet details to the AppServer database and added the Admin account to the AppSetAccess table
Logged in to BPC Admin and processed security, followed by a full process of all Dims/Apps.
That seems to have sorted it out.
Dont' know why, but I've never had any luck in using the built-in backup/restore for BPC appsets.
Thanks anyway guys for all your help

  • Dead ipod video

a little while ago a buddies ipod stopped working and he gave it to me saying that if i could fix it it was mine. long story short the ipod doesnt respond to anything, and only boots when plugged into a power supply. when plugged in it makes a cyle between loading apple icon, unhappy mac icon with the apple support web page, and finally dead battery icon. it just repeats and repeats. i have some experience dissecting ipods i have changed harddrives and such but the 5th G video is a different beast and i dont wanna go in without having some clue of what to expect. anyone have any clue as to what the problem could be? i can boot it in diagnostic mode but i can only select manual diagnostic, auto makes it go to the afore mentioned cycle. absolutley anything to help would be much appreciated!
    adam

    Check this out.
    iPod battery doesn't charge.
Sometimes if the battery gets completely discharged, simply connecting to a USB port on the computer doesn't supply enough power to "kick start" the charging process. In theory it should do, but yours seems to be a common problem.
Do you have access to a wall charger?
